Manchester United Tipped To Sign 6 Players After Aaron Wan-Bissaka Deal

Manchester United have acquired Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace for what could be a £50m deal but the Red Devils are planning on doing much more business during the summer transfer window, According to Manchestereveningnews.co.uk.

United have agreed an initial £45m fee with Palace which will rise thanks to add-ons over time. The much-talked about transfer has finally been completed but the big question is what are the club planning next?

The MEN understands that the club aim to target a midfielder next up, with the Red Devils interested in both Bruno Fernandes and Sean Longstaff.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the board are said to be working ‘calmly’ to add quality to the squad as United continue to be linked with an array of players.

That’s shown by the amount of players who could join United when it comes to the latest transfer odds by SkyBet.

You won’t see stars such as Matthijs de Ligt and Neymar on the list below as we run through the players with short odds to sign for United.

Transfer odds on potential United signings
Sean Longstaff

Solskjaer is in the market for a midfielder and United have long been linked with Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff.

The 21-year-old is not at the top of United’s list when it comes to midfield options but the odds have shortened in recent weeks.

The Red Devils are now priced at 2/5 to sign the promising playmaker.

Bruno Fernandes

United are interested in signing Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon after the attacking midfielder’s fantastic displays this past season.

The 24-year-old took his game to another level in Portugal by scoring 20 goals and providing 13 assists in the league.

United are 4/6 to sign Ferndandes and have jumped above Liverpool to become the favourites to land his signature.

Christian Eriksen

Tottenham Hotspur star Christian Eriksen is priced the same as Fernandes to join United, though the chances of a deal happening may be a little further away.

Real Madrid have been linked with the 27-year-old but the Red Devils are favourites and priced at 9/4.

Issa Diop

Another player heavily linked with United has been West Ham United defender Issa Diop.

The Old Trafford outfit are priced at 2/1 to land his services.

James Maddison

One player who is at much shorter odds than most to join United this summer is Leicester City star James Maddison.

Maddison has recently been at the European Championships with England and it’s reported that Solskjaer will step up his interest in the 22-year-old upon his return to England.

Maddison is priced at 1/3 to make the switch to Old Trafford.

Youri Tielemans

Another midfielder linked with United is Youri Tielemans, who spent last season on loan at Leicester City from Monaco.

The Foxes are slight favourites to sign the 22-year-old permanently, though the Red Devils are priced at 5/2.

Arsenal Star Alex Iwobi Tips Man City For Third Straight PL Title

Manchester City will start as favourites to win the Premier League, according to Arsenal’s Alex Iwobi, According to Manchestereveningnews.co.uk.

Pep Guardiola’s side steamrollered their way to the title in 2018 as they racked up 100 points, and despite a ferocious challenge from Liverpool last season the Blues were just too good as they became the first side in a decade to retain the trophy.

The Anfield club are expected to challenge again, with Tottenham also hoping to after showing their quality against City in the Champions League. Arsenal grew nine points closer to the champions in Unai Emery’s first season in charge and were more competitive against them, although returning to the top four is a more realistic ambition for the Gunners.

Iwobi believes that the Blues will be seen as the team to beat as they push for a third consecutive Premier League title.

“Everyone thought that last season, but Liverpool give them a tough challenge as well so you never know what could happen,” he told Skysports.

“I’m sure every club’s going to invest and try and get their team right.

“Pre-season’s coming up really soon, so everyone’s trying to get ready for the season to start.

“It’s hard to say right now whether Man City are going to dominate, but they could be favourites, considering they won it again.”

Aaron Wan-Bissaka Has Now Become 6th World’s Most Expensive Defender

The Red Devils have had the right-back, 21, as one of their top summer targets and finally sealed his £50m move to Old Trafford on Saturday, According to Sportbible.com.

And the ex-Crystal Palace star has followed in the same footsteps as Benjamin Mendy and Aymeric Laporte in becoming one of the most expensive defenders in the world.

Wan-Bissaka is also tied for the most expensive English player in history alongside Kyle Walker, who was snapped up for £50m by Manchester City in 2017.

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk, 27, remains the most expensive player in the world following his £75m move from Southampton in 2018.

Posted below are the six most expensive defenders in the world.

1. Virgil van Dijk (Liverpool): £75m
2. Lucas Hernandez (Bayern Munich): £70m
3. Aymeric Laporte (Manchester City): £57m
4. Benjamin Mendy (Manchester City): £52m
5. Kyle Walker (Manchester City): £50m
6. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (Manchester United): £50m

Wan-Bissaka, who completed his childhood dream by moving to Old Trafford, said that it was an “unbelievable feeling and an honour to call myself a Manchester United player.”

The England U21 international added: “I can’t wait to get going and integrated into the squad.

“I will have a short break now after the European Championships, but I’m looking forward to starting training with the manager and my new teammates on the pre-season tour.”

Wan-Bissaka is Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s second summer signing following the arrival of Daniel James from Swansea City.

And the Norwegian, 46, shared his excitement about working with the highly rated full-back at United.

“Aaron is one of the best upcoming defenders in the Premier League,” he said.

“He has the right work ethic, talent and mentality to play for Manchester United and he fits exactly the type of player that we are looking to bring into the squad to help us improve and push on further.

“Aaron is a young, hungry player and eager to learn and that’s important at his age.

“I am delighted he has signed with us and we look forward to continuing his tremendous development so far.”

Will Wan-Bissaka be a hit at Old Trafford?

‘Messi Is Giving Everything’ – Di Maria Backs Barca Star’s Copa America Displays

Argentina’s Angel Di Maria has defended Lionel Messi’s displays at the Copa America, insisting the forward is performing “very well”, According to Goal.com.

Messi has scored just once, from the penalty spot against Paraguay, in four games at the tournament, where Argentina reached the semi-finals courtesy of a 2-0 win over Venezuela on Friday.

The Barcelona star has come under criticism for his underwhelming performances but Di Maria, who made his 100th appearance for his country as a second-half substitute against Venezuela, believes his contribution has been important.

“I think Leo is doing things very well,” he told reporters. “He’s not scoring goals like he usually does, but I think he’s doing a good job.

“He’s running and he’s giving everything. He has to keep running and then the rest will come. I think he is doing very well.”

Argentina face Brazil in a mouth-watering semi-final on Tuesday and Di Maria knows his side will have to be at their best to overcome the host nation.

“With Brazil it’s a complicated game, but I think all the teams make it difficult for you,” he added.

“Brazil will play as our equals and they will have the home support. We have to try to play our way, do what we did against Venezuela and hopefully things will go well.”

Messi will be expected to lead the charge against arch-rivals.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner is integral to the performances of his country.

He has, however, admitted to being below his best at the Copa so far.

Messi said after helping to see off Venezuela: “The truth is that it’s not been my best Copa America, not what I expected,” Messi said.

“There are matches that occur in this way. You cannot play a lot, it’s complicated for those of us who want to do something different, to avoid rivals.

“The important thing is that we won and we continue.”

US Deploys Stealth Fighters To Gulf Amid Iran Tensions

The United States has deployed advanced F-22 stealth fighters to the Gulf region for the first time as it builds up forces in the region to respond to further Iranian aggression.

The Air force did not specify how many F-22 Raptor stealth fighter jets had been deployed, although a hand out photo showed five aircraft, but it said they were intended “to defend American forces and interests.”

Tehran and Washington have been locked in an increasingly tense standoff since May when tankers were sabotaged off the coast of the UAE and a Saudi pipeline was hit with bomb-laden drones.

US President Donald Trump pulled the country out of the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers, effectively crippling the agreement that saw sanctions removed in exchange for strict limits on Iranian nuclear enrichment programmes. America has since perused a massive pressure campaign with economic sanctions, effectively isolating Iran from the international community.

Tensions spiked last week when Iran shot down a US drone over sensitive Gulf waters. Iran says the drone entered its airspace while the US says it was over international waters. In response, Mr Trump ordered and then cancelled a limited response strike that he said would have hit key Iranian military installations.

Mr Trump then announced new sanctions against Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Mr Zarif said on Saturday that Iran would resist US pressure just as it had persevered during the devastating 1980 Iran-Iraq war that led to tens of thousands of lives.

“We persevered then, and will now,” Mr Zarif tweeted in reference to the chemical attack on 1987 chemical weapons attack by Iraqi forces under Saddam Hussein on the Iranian town of Sardasht. “We’ll never forget that Western world supported and armed Saddam … Security Council never condemned his gassing of our people.”

In a bid to save the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, the EU met on Friday in Vienna to discuss measures to allow Iran to continue trading without companies being hit with US sanctions.

The 27 member bloc said that the special trade channel, known as Instex was operations and available to all EU states.

“France, Germany and the United Kingdom informed participants that Instex had been made operational and available to all EU Member States and that the first transactions are being processed,” the EU said in a statement on Saturday.

Iran has also established an entity to trade with Europe, while some more EU countries are joining Instex as shareholders, the statement said, following talks between the remaining signatories to the Iran nuclear deal – Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany – after the United States pulled out.

But Iran has said that the EU measures are, effectively, too little too late.

“It was a step forward, but it is still not enough and not meeting Iran’s expectations,” Araqchi told reporters after Friday’s meeting. “For Instex to be useful for Iran, Europeans need to buy oil or consider credit lines for this mechanism otherwise Instex is not like they or us expect,” he said.

Iran stopped complying with some commitments in the nuclear deal on May 8 and Tehran said it would suspend further obligations under the deal after 60 days if the EU and other signatories failed to protect the benefits of sticking to the agreement.

It has said it has already ramped up enrichment of uranium and will surpass the between 3 and 4 per cent threshold laid down by the deal in a matter of weeks.

Iran has also looked to other signatories to the 2015 deal, namely Russia and China, to help safeguard the agreement. However, China’s envoy to Friday’s talks was guarded when asked if his country was willing to defy US sanctions and buy Iranian oil but said his country rejects the sanctions.

“We reject the unilateral imposition of sanctions and for us, energy security is important,” Fu Cong, director general of the Department of Arms Control of the Chinese Foreign Ministry told reporters after the talks.

“We do not accept this zero policy of the United States,” he said when asked if China would buy Iranian oil.

Meanwhile, in the US on Friday, the Senate defeated legislation that would have blocked Mr Trump from launching an attack on Iran without first obtaining the approval of Congress – except in cases of self-defence.

In a 50-40 vote against the bill (with 10 senators not casting a vote), the Republican-majority house threw out the amendment to the annual defence policy bill.

The bill, the National Defense Authorization Act passed the Senate on Thursday, but Senate leaders made the unusual decision to allow the amendment vote on Friday after a handful of Republicans joined Democrats in calling for a debate on the matter.

Republican opponents of the legislation argued it would impose unnecessary restrictions on Trump if he faced a threat from Iran.

Supporters said it was necessary to ensure that Congress retains its constitutional right to authorize the use of military force and to lessen the chance of a miscalculation that could plunge the country into a prolonged conflict.

Melissa McCarthy In Talks To Play Ursula In The Little Mermaid Remake

Melissa McCarthy is in talks to play Disney villain Ursula in the upcoming live-action remake of The Little Mermaid.

The Academy Award nominated actress is in discussions to join the remake of the 1989 animated classics, according to reports in Variety according to rte.ie.

In The Little Mermaid, Ursula is a scary sea witch who tries to capture Ariel by granting her wish to become a human and live above sea level – but it’s not that straightforward and Ariel must pay a price.

Chicago, Into the Woods and Mary Poppins Returns director Rob Marshall will helm the film, and he previously said he hopes to add more songs to his version of the story.

“We’re working on, in a way, fleshing out The Little Mermaid – Ariel has one song in the animated film – and so we’re looking for maybe more material,” he said.

Trump Hints At Softer Stance On China’s Huawei

President Donald Trump said on Saturday that US companies could sell equipment to Chinese telecom giant Huawei, indicating a potentially softer position on a key sticking point in the US-China trade war.

“US companies can sell their equipment to Huawei,” Trump told reporters in Osaka hours after sealing a tariff truce with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“We’re talking about equipment where there’s no great national security problem with it.”

It was not immediately clear whether Trump’s comment marked a material change in the stance toward Huawei, which has essentially been barred on national security grounds from accessing crucial American technology or operating in the US market.

The US fears that systems built by Huawei — the world leader in telecom network equipment and number two smartphone supplier — could be used by China’s government for espionage via built-in secret security “back doors”.

Huawei vigorously denies that and says the US has never provided proof to substantiate it.

Last month the US government added Huawei to an “entity list” of companies barred from receiving US-made components without permission from Washington.

Trump’s comment on its face does not mark a change from current practice.

But it could be read by financial markets as a positive signal that his administration may be open to negotiating on Huawei when bilateral trade talks resume.

However, any softening on Huawei could meet resistance from a bipartisan US congressional movement that is calling for a hardline on the firm.

A Huawei spokesperson told AFP the company had no inital comment.

Trump has imposed tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports in an effort to force Beijing into intellectual property protection and other reforms of a trading system that Washington says gives China huge unfair advantages.

But Trump and Xi struck a ceasefire deal on Saturday, with Washington vowing to hold off on further tariffs and the two sides agreeing to restart trade negotiations.

The Wall Street Journal reported earlier this week that Xi planned to ask Trump in Osaka to ease up on Huawei as a precondition for signing a possible trade deal.

Asked by reporters in Osaka what was discussed regarding Huawei, a Chinese foreign ministry official said he did not know, but that China would welcome lifting the US ban.

“Putting restrictions on technology will lead to a situation where all sides lose. So if the US lifts the sanctions, we would welcome that,” said the official, Wang Xiaolong.

Huawei founder and CEO Ren Zhengfei said earlier this month that its overseas smartphone sales had fallen by up to 40 percent as a result of the ban.

Taliban Kill 26 Government Militiamen As Talks Enter Crucial Stage

Taliban militants killed at least 26 members of a pro-government militia in north Afghanistan on Saturday, officials said, as the militants and US negotiators prepared for a new round of peace talks in Qatar.

The talks will be led by Zalmay Khalilzad, the US peace envoy for Afghanistan, who has held six rounds of talks with the Taliban in Qatar’s capital of Doha since October.

But despite the efforts to find peace, fighting between the Taliban and government forces has not subsided.

In the latest bloodshed, Taliban stormed security posts manned by the pro-government militia in the early hours of Saturday in the Nahrin district of the northern province of Baghlan.

A provincial police spokesman said 26 of the militiamen were killed. A senior defence ministry official in Kabul said the attack was a clear indication that the Taliban wanted to negotiate from a position of strength.

VIDEO: Evans Ogboi – Anumneka Jesus (I’m In Jesus’ hands)

UK based Gospel Artist, Evas Ogboi releases the live version of hit single, “Anumneka Jesus” , which was first released in Lagos Nigeria in 2007 on Evans Ogboi’s Debut album titled “Miracle”.

The song, by God’s grace, went around the country and later spread around the world. No doubt, the song “Anumneka Jesus” was inspired by the Holy Spirit. Evans shared how he received the entire song arrangement and production ideas. The whole production process was effortless as Evans self produced this song.

Evans Ogboi connected deeply with this song in a special way as it’s message was clear and direct. In October 2007, just a few weeks before the release, Evans’ Dad passed on to glory. Late, Lawrence Emina Ogboi was apparently one of Evans’ strong influences… thus the original intro “There’s a little simple song that me and my Daddy use to sing and it goes like this”…

The lyrics then made so much sense as it was apparently a message from above. Evans and his entire family held on to God’s unchanging hands through this very trying season and He saw them through.

Evans Ogboi relocated to the UK in 2011 and has kept the song on all his album releases. This version was recorded live at Evans’ first ever Live album recording concert in the UK.

ANUMNEKA JESUS simply means “I’m In Jesus’ hands”. It is the 4th of 15 songs to be released on Evans Ogboi’s forthcoming Koinonia Album Project, recorded Live at the iconic City Gates church in London UK.

Anumneka Jesus was written and produced by Evans Ogboi for the praise and honour of the risen King JESUS.

Evans’ real desire is to see the nations worship and praise JESUS CHRIST.

China Rejects US Policy On Stopping Iranian Oil Exports – Foreign Ministry

China does not support US policy on eliminating Iran’s oil exports, the director-general of the Department of Arms Control at the Chinese Foreign Ministry said.

“China rejects unilateral sanctions, and energy security is very important for us. Oil import is very important for the Chinese energy security and for the Chinese people. I repeat, we do not support US policy on bringing Iran’s oil exports to zero,” Fu Cong told reporters when asked if Beijing would continue buying oil from Iran.

Iran has confirmed at a meeting of the joint commission on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in Vienna that it remained committed to the deal, Fu said.

“This is very important, and we support this position. Other participants agreed that we should give Iran economic benefits that the JCPOA presupposes,” the Chinese official added.

According to the Chinese diplomat, the European Union said at the meeting that it had finalized INSTEX —a special mechanism for trade with Iran bypassing US sanctions.

The move comes after the US imposed new sanctions on Iran last week, citing the Islamic Republic’s “hostile conduct”. The sanctions specifically targeted Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and those “close to him” in a bid to cut them off from any financial sources, as well as eight senior members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The US-Iranian ties have been tense since Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the Iran deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on 8 May 2018, when the US president also signalled the US’ readiness to reinstate anti-Iranian sanctions.

Ethiopia’s Leader Appointed Spy Chief As New Head Of Army

Six days after the assassination of Ethiopia’s army chief, the prime minister has appointed the country’s spy chief as the late general’s successor.

Gen. Adem Mohammed is the new army chief, announced Prime minister Abiy Ahmed’s office Friday. He replaces the general who was killed on June 22 at his residence in the capital by his bodyguard. A retired general was also killed by the bodyguard according to abcnews.go.com.

Earlier that day in the northern Amhara region, the regional governor and two other officials were killed in an attack on their offices.

Following those attacks, there has been high security in the capital and the Amhara region amid a wave of arrests. The internet was shut down and only partially reopened on Friday.

A total of 255 people have been detained both in the Amhara region and Addis Ababa following the attempted coup, said the prime minister’s spokeswoman on Friday.

“The Brigadier General who orchestrated the attack, Asamnew Tsige, was killed while he was trying to flee,” press secretary Billene Seyoum said, adding the attacks were designed to gain a shortcut to power. “They were focused on undermining the reforms of the current administration,” she said.

Since the assassinations, Ethiopian security forces have arrested several members and leaders of the National Amhara Movement, a party official told The Associated Press.

“This is unacceptable and against democratic principles. This has to stop,” said Melkamu Shumye, a party leader.

Government officials are describing last week’s killings as the works of a rogue security official and his associates. Some Ethiopians worry that the subsequent mass arrests indicate that the incident is being used by the government to silence dissent, mainly in the Amhara region.

Hong Kong Anti-Extradition Protesters Hold Rally Again

More than 1,000 people, mostly students dressed in black, rallied outside government offices in Hong Kong on Friday as protests over a controversial extradition bill that has plunged the Chinese-ruled city into turmoil showed no signs of let-up.

Embattled Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam suspended the bill, that would allow people to be sent to mainland China for trial, after some of the largest and most violent protests in decades, but she has stopped short of protesters’ demands to scrap it.

The activists have seized on the G20 summit of world leaders in Japan this week to appeal for the former British colony’s plight to be put on the agenda, a move certain to rile Beijing, which has vowed not to tolerate such discussion.

“The government hasn’t given a proper response to the public. It’s the government who forces us to come out,” said Paul Chan, 27.

“The government always tells us ‘don’t do this and don’t do that’. We also want to tell the government ‘don’t do any policy we don’t like’. But she didn’t listen,” he said of Lam.

The latest protest follows weeks of unrest that have seen millions of people from all walks of life clog streets in the Asian finance hub, posing the greatest popular challenge to Chinese leader Xi Jinping since he came to power in 2012.

Hong Kong returned to Chinese rule in 1997 and has since been governed under a “one country, two systems” formula that allows freedoms not enjoyed in mainland China, including freedom of protest and a much-cherished independent judiciary.

Opponents of the extradition bill see it as a threat to the rule of law and fear it would put them at the mercy of China’s justice system where human rights are not guaranteed.

Lam suspended the bill two weeks ago, saying she had heard the people “loud and clear”, but opponents say nothing less than the full withdrawal is acceptable.

On Friday night, the ranks of protesters grew steadily as supporters made their way down town after work, just three days before the 22nd anniversary of the handover when another huge protest is expected.

In China, censors have erased or blocked most news of the protests amid concerns that any large public rallies could inspire demonstrations on the mainland.

Joey Siu, with the student union at City University of Hong Kong, said student representatives had travelled to Japan to draw attention to Hong Kong as leaders convene in Osaka for the G20.

“We want to put the agenda there up high. We won’t stop saying it simply because Xi Jinping doesn’t allow the international community to talk about it in G20,” she said.

“We are confident that the world leaders will talk about the situation in Hong Kong.” Xi is due to meet US President Donald Trump on Saturday.

In the latest push for attention, activists took out full-page advertisements in several international newspapers to appeal to the G20 leaders. The appeal was financed by a crowdfunding campaign that raised around HK$5.5 million ($704,560).

On Wednesday, thousands marched to major foreign consulates in the city, urging G20 leaders to back their demand to scrap the bill and “liberate” Hong Kong.

The Chinese military will be handed prime Hong Kong waterfront land on Saturday, even as the city is rocked by anti-Beijing protests and just days before the anniversary of its return to China.

Huge rallies have shaken the semi-autonomous territory this month, with demonstrators calling for the withdrawal of a bill that would allow extraditions to the Chinese mainland.

More pro-democracy protests are expected in the coming days, as residents mark the anniversary of Hong Kong’s 1997 handover to Beijing’s rule.

On Saturday, China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) will automatically be granted control of the Victoria Harbour pier under a 1994 British and Chinese agreement.

The move will mean PLA ships could berth in the harbour, whose backdrop is the city’s famous skyline.

The PLA already has a garrison in Hong Kong, but its troops generally keep a low profile and are rarely seen in uniform in public.

A debate over the controversial transfer deal was blocked by a pro-Beijing lawmaker on Wednesday − quashing the pro-democracy camp’s last attempt to stop the transfer.

US Sanctions Maduro’s Son For Upholding ‘Illegitimate Regime’ In Venezuela

The United States Department of Treasury slapped sanctions against the son of the disputed Venezuelan president after it accused him of carrying out numerous crimes to bolster his father’s interests.

In serving the sanction, the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) has blocked any property or entities owned in the U.S. by Nicolas Maduro’s son, Nicolas “Nicolasito” Ernesto Maduro Guerra (Maduro Guerra), and added that any known assets owned “directly or indirectly” by him should be reported to them according to foxnews.com.

“Maduro’s regime was built on fraudulent elections, and his inner circle lives in luxury off the proceeds of corruption while the Venezuelan people suffer,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement. “Maduro relies on his son Nicolasito and others close to his authoritarian regime to maintain a stranglehold on the economy and suppress the people of Venezuela.”

The department has accused Maduro Guerra of engaging in propaganda and censorship efforts, pressuring the Venezuelan National Armed Forces to deny humanitarian aid, and leading the National Constituent Assembly, which the feds say sought to rewrite the Venezuelan constitution and dissolve the country’s state institutions.

Maduro became the 46th President of Venezuela beginning in 2013 after the death of Hugo Chavez. Despite the country’s descent into chaos, Maduro was sworn in for a second term in January of this year in a decision widely condemned by world powers, including the United States, Canada and Brazil. Juan Guaido, who led the opposition of Maduro, has since been recognized by those countries and several others as the rightful leader of Venezuela, while Maduro’s regime continues to interfere politically and socially in the region.

Consistent blackouts, lack of food and water and major medical shortages have defined the last few months in Venezuela, and Maduro’s military has attempted to block humanitarian aid from other countries as thousands have fled the nation. Maduro has previously accused the United States of leading a “coup d’etat” to undermine his authority and take control of Venezuela’s oil reserves.

Release Our Husbands, Wives Of Detained Nigerians Beg Buhari, Navy

LAGOS – Wives and relations of some Nigerians detained by the authority of Nigerian Navy have pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari and the Nigerian Navy to release their husbands and relations said to have been arrested and taken to unknown location since September 2018.

In a statement addressed on behalf of the people by a civil society group, Centre Against Impunity in Lagos, disclosed that 22 Nigerians were arrested by officials of Nigerian Navy in September, 2018 and had since been incarcerated despite court judgment asking for their immediate release.

Comrade Shina Loremikan, the centre’s director, said the Nigerian Navy officials in September 2018, descended on the premises of Captain Labinjo, arrested him alongside the wife, thereafter, the 22 crew members of the ship were arrested and detained.

He declared that the detained, after approaching the Federal High Court for an order enforcing their fundamental rights which was granted, the Nigerian Navy had refused to obey the court order.

In a judgment presided by Justice C.J. Aneke delivered on March 11, 2019, the court ruled, “A declaration that the arrest and detention of the applicants by the respondents constitute a violation of the applicant’s fundamental rights as guaranteed under Sections, 35, 41, 44 and 46 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) and its therefore illegal and unconstitutional.

“A declaration that the  continued detention of the  applicant since September 12 and 14, 2018 respectively by the respondents constitute a violation of the gross violation of the fundamental rights of the applicants as guaranteed under Sections,35, 41,44 and 45 of the federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) as therefore illegal and unconstitutional.

“An order compelling the respondents whether by themselves or by their officers, agent or privies, to forth with release the applicant, Mr Adeline Jumbo and her crew members.”

The court, therefore, ordered the Nigerian Navy to pay the sum of N1 million as general damages for the breach of the fundamental rights of applicants.

The centre, in the statement, expressed disappointment in the alleged refusal of the Naval authorities to allow the detainees access to their solicitors and doctors after several attempts in a democratic dispensation.

Speaking on the continuous detention of the their husbands, Mrs. Helen Yakubu, one of the wives of Hamza Yakubu, Chief Engineer of the Adeline Jumbo vessel,  said that her husband had been hypertensive and his continuous  detention without access to his doctor could worsen the condition.

She urged the Naval authorities to charge the accused to court if they found anything incriminating against them.

She said: “I am surprised this thing is happening under a democratic system of government which is meant to protect the rights of the people.”

She further stressed that the continuous detention of the husband had caused untold hardship to the family as she could not afford to take care of the children, who she lamented, had been out of school.

Yakubu, who said the Presidency, was aware of the matter, appealed to President Buhari to intervene in the matter.

Patronise Made-In-Nigeria Goods To Boost Economic Growth – NOA Urges Nigerians

NOA

Osogbo – The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has urged Nigerians to patronise made-in-Nigeria goods and services in order to boost economic growth and development of the country.

Osun State Director of the agency, Mrs Yomi Olasinde made the call during a sensitisation programme tagged ‘Patronise Made-in-Nigeria Products and Services’ organised by the agency.

She said the economy of any nation grows rapidly when locally made goods and services are promoted through patronage by the citizens and its export.

“The citizens should understand that, the problems of Nigeria’s economy are over-dependence on importations of goods which weakens the currency, creates unemployment and consistently reduces the Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” she stated.

Olasinde added that by patronising Nigerian products, the nation becomes self-reliant in producing and utilising goods produced by itself.

“This will create wealth and reduce poverty and it is high time we change our orientation and psyche as a nation from an addicted desire for foreign products and services to valuing our locally made goods in order to boost and develop our economy.”

Urging participants to continue to sensitising  members of their family on the need to always patronise locally made products, Osun NOA Director lamented that many Nigerians have an entrenched negative attitude of proffering foreign imported products to home-made- ones, the development which she said it calls for grave concern to every patriotic Nigerians.

She said patronage of locally made products was in the national interest, adding that such patronage would help to create jobs and reduce unemployment.
