Minimum Wage: FG clarifies President Buhari’s position on Ama Pepple’s Report

The Federal Government says President Muhammadu Buhari will study the report of the Tripartite Committee on the Review of National Minimum Wage before making his view known to Nigerians.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed made the clarification when he addressed State House correspondents at the end of the meeting of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), which was presided over by President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Tripartite Committee on the Review of National Minimum Wage chaired by former Head of Service, Ama Pepple, had on Tuesday submitted its report to President Buhari with a recommendation of N30,000 as new National Minimum Wage.

While receiving the Tripartite Committee Report, President Buhari pledged that the Federal Government would soon transmit an Executive Bill (on National Minimum Wage) to the National Assembly for its passage within the shortest possible time.

He said: “Our plan is to transmit the Executive bill to the National Assembly for its passage within the shortest possible time.

“I am fully committed to having a new National Minimum Wage Act in the very near future.’’

To this end, some traditional media outfits and the social media reported that the president had endorsed the Pepple’s recommendation of N30,000 minimum wage.

But, the minister said the president was only in receipt of the recommendations of the Ama Pepple’s Report, and he would consider it before making his views known to the public.

He said: “I think it was a recommendation. So, Mr President will consider it and would make his views known in due course.

“So, like I said recommendations have been made and Mr President would get back to the committee after he has studied the recommendations.’’

It would be recalled that the Presidency had also frowned at the misinterpretation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s remarks when he received the report of the Tripartite Committee on the Review of National Minimum Wage from the committee’s chairman, Ama Pepple, on Tuesday.

It said that the president did not endorse N30,000 as proposed by committee as being reported by some sections of the media.

“But the president’s speech at the event was immediately made available to the media and nowhere indicated that the president endorsed N30,000 Minimum wage,’’ a presidential source maintained.

President Buhari had also expressed delight that the Amal Pepple committee had successfully completed its assignment in a peaceful and non-controversial manner.

“Let me use this opportunity to recognise the leadership of the organised labour and private sector as well as representatives of State and Federal Governments for all your hard work.

“The fact that we are here today, is a notable achievement.

“As the Executive Arm commences its review of your submission, we will continue to engage you all in closing any open areas presented in this report.

“I, therefore, would like to ask for your patience and understanding in the coming weeks.

The president, however, enjoined the leadership of the labour unions as well as the Nigerian workers to avoid being used as political weapons.

“May I therefore, enjoin workers and their leaders not to allow themselves to be used as political weapons,’’ he said.

This pushup challenge will pump up your chest and arms

If you need a full-on chest and arm workout, skip out on the heavy weights, hit the deck, and push up.

Getting a good pump doesn't always take a whole gym packed with equipment, according to Men's Health Fitness Director Ebenezer Samuel.

If you need a full-on chest and arm workout, skip out on the heavy weights, hit the deck, and push up.

This vicious pushup circuit will blast your upper body – and all your work won't just go to one body part. Since you're alternating hand positions, you'll hone your pecs, shoulders, triceps, serratus anterior, and core, giving you an effective method to target multiple muscle groups.

The routine's simplicity makes it an option for just about everyone. "Advanced lifters, this is your finisher [for a chest/upper body session]," Samuel says. "Beginners, this can be a full workout."

You can do the circuit anywhere, too, since all you need is your bodyweight. If you have a few minutes and enough room to stretch out, you have no excuse to skip out on your chest pump.

How to do it:

Make sure your pushup form is perfect. That means you squeeze your core and glutes to keep your spine straight, keeping your gaze cast down slightly ahead of you.

  • Perform 1 pushup with your hands in standard position (shoulder width apart).

  • Jump your hands into a tricep pushup position (hands 2 to 3 inches apart). Perform 1 tricep pushup.

  • Jump back to standard and go 2 reps, the jump to tricep position for 2 reps.

  • Jump to standard for 3 reps, then tricep for 3 reps you’re toast.

  • Continue up the ladder, adding reps for each style of pushup, until failure.

"Make it to 5 reps and 5 reps (the video above is my last set and I wasn’t even close on that, it’s tough)," admits Samuel, "and you’ve done 30 reps. 3 sets and you’ll be rocked."

When you're training to failure, make sure you keep the form tight through every rep. If you find your groin sagging and your core flagging, call it a day. "Make the pushups clean and controlled, but don’t drop your chest all the way to the deck," says Samuel.

Beginners shouldn't be overly concerned about nailing the perfect transition between the two hand positions, either. "If you can’t jump your hands you can still do this," says Samuel. "Just move your hands to each position with control."

Just be careful with your form and hand positioning. "On the close-grip jump, don’t think too close," advises Samuel. "Think hand-width just inside of normal pushup position and slightly below your chest. You’ll save your shoulders from unnecessary internal rotation that doesn’t actually benefit the triceps training effect we want."

Just In: Trump fires Jeff Sessions as US attorney general

Embattled U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned at the “request” of President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Sessions’s chief of staff Matthew Whitaker will serve as acting attorney general, Trump announced.

Whitaker also will assume oversight of the ongoing investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, and possible collusion by Trump’s campaign in that meddling.

Sessions, 71, lasted about two years in the job. But in that brief period, the former Alabama senator managed to usher in a new era at the Justice Department.

“Most importantly, in my time as Attorney General, we have restored and upheld the rule of law — a glorious tradition that each of us has a responsibility to safeguard, Sessions wrote in his resignation letter. “We have operated with integrity and have lawfully and aggressively advanced the policy agenda of this administration.

The FDA just approved an opioid that's 1,000 times stronger than morphine

Many people have expressed concern that this drug could make the opioid crisisworse, wondering “do we really need this on the market? As with most medical advances, there are pros and cons.

The FDA approval of Dsuvia means there’s now another opioid on the market-an extremely powerful one. It’s 1,000 times more potent than morphine and 10 times more potent than fentanyl.

Many people have expressed concern that this drug could make the opioid crisisworse, wondering “do we really need this on the market? As with most medical advances, there are pros and cons.

The drug is a sublingual (under the tongue) version of sufentanyl, which was first made in 1974 and is given intravenously. On the benefit side, Dsuvia has a unique ability to provide high-level pain relief in a short time, without need for IV access. That means that trauma victims can get relief quickly, so one use for Dsuvia will be for medics who are literally on the battlefield; the Pentagon strongly supported approval of this drug. It may also be useful in the operating room to provide sedation and anesthesia, especially in people for whom it is difficult to get an intravenous line in, such as some people with cancer.

What are the downsides? Well, a drug so powerful that can be taken by mouth has the potential for abuse. Synthetic opioids, such as fentanyl, provide a “high for many. However, just because the drug is a thousand-fold more potent doesn’t mean the “high is a thousand times stronger: it just means that the dose that’s needed to have the effect is much less.

The FDA has taken some common-sense steps to reduce the likelihood of abuse. The drug is going to be supplied in a single-use disposable container. It will not be available for home use or through retail pharmacies; only in “medically supervised settings, such as hospitals or the military. The FDA has also mandated that Dsuvia will be “reserved for use in patients for whom alternative pain treatment options have not been tolerated, or are not expected to be tolerated, where existing treatment options have not provided adequate analgesia, or where these alternatives are not expected to provide adequate analgesia. It will also contain a “black box warning, the highest warning the FDA issues to indicate there are serious hazards associated with the drug. None of these guarantee that the drug will not be abused, people being as they are, but it reduces the likelihood of misuse and diversion.

While the US continues to have a serious opioid problem, I don’t believe that the approval of Dsuvia is likely to significantly escalate it, given the precautions around it. While its uses in the ER and OR are marginal, it’s not a thousand or even ten times more dangerous than fentanyl, which is being synthesized and sold illicitly on the street. It does have unique benefits in certain situations that are worth adding to the medical toolkit, and in my opinion, those outweigh the risks in this case.
