Robert Peters’ new movie ‘MakeRoom’ is about Boko Haram with all the violence. Here’s the trailer

Many creatives have tried to document the kidnapped Chibok girls event of 2014, from Uzodinma Iweala’s 2017 short doc Waiting for Hassana, a harrowing account of one girl’s escape from captivity and a heart-wrenching lament for her closest friend Hassana, to Uche Aguh’s 2016 short film with the on-the-nose title Sambisa. American cable company HBO even rendered its own input through a documentary film titled Stolen Daughters: Kidnapped by Boko Haram, produced in partnership with BBC2 and ARTE France and tells the story of the girls’ time in captivity and follows their lives over the past year since their release.

RELATED: Epic dramas like ‘Ajoche’ and ‘Ojukwu’ need gay characters but homophobia

Furthermore, our literary space is exploding with Boko Haram literature, from Helon Habila’s The Chibok Girls: The Boko Haram Kidnapping & Islamic Militancy in Nigeria to Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani’s latest novel Buried Beneath the Baobab Tree. In the new feature-length movie from Robert Peters and Rogers Ofime titled MakeRoom, the sprawling violence of the dangerous terrorist group Book Haram is retold in Nigeria’s northeastern region. The trailer, released recently, ripples with violence and panic. It opens with a newscaster on CNN reporting on the deadly operations of Boko Haram, and the invasion of school where people are shot and girls are dragged away.

The movie is rendered in Hausa but subtitled in English, and features top Kannywood stars like Sani Muazu, Rekiya Attah, Uzee Usman and Yakubu Mohammed, followed by a supporting cast of Adams Garba, Asabe Madake, Abba Zakky and Abubakar Maina. MakeRoom is scheduled for screening in 2019.

BREAKING: I Didn’t Slump, Die At Lagos Airport – Senator Ademola Adeleke

Senator Adeleke

Senator Ademola Adeleke, the governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Osun election, has said that he is not dead.

He said that the passenger who died at the Lagos Airport was not him.

It will be recalled that a passenger who also bears Ademola Adeleke slumped and died at Lagos Airport Wednesday morning.

Sen Ademola Adeleke said is healthy and strong, adding that in his good health, he will reclaime the stolen mandate.

This was contained in a press statement by his campaign organisation on Thursday.

The statement read:”Our attention has been drawn to an evil rumour circulating about the state state of health of Senator Ademola Adeleke. We affirm that the people’s governor is hale and hearty.

“As a distinguished senator and holder of the people’s mandate, Ademola Adeleke has been attending to stautory duties within and outside his constituency in good health and high spirit. There was no time the Senator suffers health failure either at airport or anywhere else.

“We therefore urge our teeming supporters and the good people of Osun state to ignore any fake news purporting health failure on the part of the Senator. It is a product of warped minds and infantile imagination of usurper of peoples mandate.

“All hands are on deck to regain the mandate of the people freely given on September 22. We owe Osun people that sacred duty.”

NEC, FAAC Approve Use Of $1.05bn NLNG Dividends

Baru, NNPC

The National Economic Council (NEC) and the Federation Allocation Accounts Committee (FAAC) have approved the use of Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas dividends for financing of the petroleum products importation.

One of the members of FAAC, who spoke with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on condition of anonymity, said that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) briefed the meetings before using the fund.

He said that the Group Managing Director of the NNPC, Maikanti Baru, had briefed NEC and FAAC on the NLNG dividends, which was paid to the corporation as a major shareholder.

It would be recalled that the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, had faulted the reported use of $1.05 billion by the NNPC from its dividends from the NLNG for fuel subsidy.

Saraki expressed grave concern that the NNPC GMD was claiming that the illegal diversion of dividends from the NLNG, which should be paid into the Consolidated Revenue Fund of the Federation for the purpose of funding the fuel subsidy “was done ‘in compliance with the National Assembly’s directive that NNPC as the supplier of last resort should, and has maintained robust petrol supply.

Another source in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) further confirmed that the corporation had sourced $1.05 billion, a revolving loan, to finance the importation of premium motor spirit, known as petrol into the country in 2018.

He said that section 7 of the NNPC Act empowers the NNPC to defray costs from its revenue.

He further explained that the NNPC had fully compiled and had implemented the approved Treasury Single Account (TSA) laws in utilising the money, which is domiciled in CBN account.

According to him, the fund is managed by inter-governmental agencies such as Ministry of Petroleum Resources, Ministry of Finance, Department of Petroleum Resources, Petroleum Equalisation Fund, among others.

He added that it was unfortunate for anybody to say NNPC had misappropriated the fund.

“There is nothing like $3.5 billion subsidy claim; it is not true and it is also false alarm that the NNPC was mismanaging such account, the dividends of NLNG as we know is being properly managed, he said.

Also, spokesperson of the NNPC, Ndu Ughamadu, confirmed that the corporation operates a regime of under recovery, since it is only the National Assembly that could appropriate on fuel subsidy.

He said that the NNPC was a major shareholder of NLNG and the dividends of NLNG were paid into the corporation account, which the corporation manages.

“I want you to know that in this situation, there is nothing like subsidy payment as the Senate President had mentioned.

“The GMD had briefed both NEC and FAAC on this NLNG dividend; also you know that the National Assembly had asked the corporation to ensure adequate supply of products in the country.

“We used the $1.05 billion revolving loan in question to finance importation of product in the country, he said.

Ughamadu noted that the corporation had addressed the Senator Ahmed Lawal-led Ad Hoc Committee on fuel importation and explained every details of its operations.

Minimum Wage: Buhari’s Govt Not Reliable –Atiku

Abuja – Following the denial by the presidency to pay the N30,000 minimum wage, the presidential candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, yesterday came down hard on President Muhammadu Buhari’s government, saying a government that is not reliable, nothing else about it can be stable.

Atiku, who said his attention was drawn to a statement from the Presidency denying President Buhari’s earlier pledge to pay the new minimum wage of ₦30,000 agreed with the Nigerian Labour Congress and other labour affiliates in a signed communiqué, noted that “this approbation and reprobation is characteristic of the Buhari administration and is evidence of the lack of leadership at the very top that is putting our economy in peril.

The former Vice President, in a statement by his Campaign Organisation said, “Just two weeks ago, two of the world’s largest banks, HSBC and UBS, pulled out of Nigeria citing lack of policy stability as their reason. This same reason was given by Procter and Gamble when they pulled out last year. In the span of the three years that this administration has been in office, more than 500 companies have pulled out of Nigeria for similar reasons. Nigeria under President Buhari has become synonymous with policy flip flopping.

“A government is only as reliable as its word and if its word is not reliable then nothing else about the government will be stable. This is why Nigeria suffered from a recession under this administration and is right now at risk of another recession.

“At the risk of repeating ourselves, we urge the Buhari administration to note that Nigerian workers are the goose that lays the golden egg that top members of this government are enjoying to the detriment of those laying the egg.

“We are aware that both President Buhari and Vice President Osinbajo, despite living and feeding at the public expense, collect a hardship allowance of 50% of their annual basic salary, whereas, the long suffering Nigerian workers, who are the main sufferers of the hardship caused by the incompetence of this administration, do not have any hardship allowance and are expected to live on the unliveable minimum wage of the Buhari government.

“It is a testament to how badly we have treated our workforce over the last three years that Nigeria was officially declared the world headquarters for extreme poverty by the World Poverty Clock and the World Economic Forum.

The presidential candidate said that this aberration can only be addressed when workers are being paid their living wage as opposed to the starvation wages now paid to them by the Buhari administration.

“We therefore call on President Muhammadu Buhari to keep faith with the agreement his government freely reached with labour and affirm the new minimum wage, he said.

2019: INEC To Create More Voting Points In Lagos – REC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Wednesday, said it would create more voting points in Lagos State to ease accreditation and voting processes across the 8,462 polling units in the state during 2019 general elections.

Mr Sam Olumekun, the Resident Electoral Commissioner of INEC in the state, disclosed this at a stakeholders meeting organised by the commission in collaboration with the private sector and the Nigeria Policing Programme (NPP) in Lagos.

There are presently 3, 662 voting points created across polling units to reduce accreditation and voting time during elections.

“After the just-concluded Continuous Voter Registration exercise, we have recorded close to 700,000 new registrants in Lagos, and the implication of that is we are going to create additional voting points.

“This has become imperative so that we can have a pleasant experience when people go out to vote on the election days.

“We will ensure that your votes count in 2019. We are determined to conduct the best ever elections in 2019, Olumekun said.

According to the INEC boss, the creation of additional voting points is necessary to ease the process and reduce voting time.

The REC said that the electoral body had improved in deployment of materials and personnel, and transmission of election results.

Olumekun, who emphasised the need for security of voters, election materials and personnel, urged the stakeholders to continue the advocacy on peaceful conduct and voter education.

According to him, the successful conduct of past elections in the state can largely be attributed to the contributions of the stakeholders, who have been supportive in the state.

“I can testify that the stakeholders have done marvelously well in the area of sensitisation and mobilisation of the citizens for all our activities, especially the just-suspended Continuous Voters’ Registration Exercise.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that the stakeholders here present have a stake in our democracy, of which the conduct of free, fair, credible and peaceful elections is an integral part.

“You are major influencers of public opinion and our first appeal is that you use your influence in doing advocacy for peaceful elections,’’ he said.

According to him, voter education is crucial in promoting the electoral literacy in any political community.

“Voter education as we know is, a deliberate and careful dissemination of electoral information to voters, to enable them participate effectively in the democratic process and make informed decisions.

“It is important to say that the large number of void votes recorded in the past elections could be largely attributed to inadequate voter education,’’ he said.

According to him, with a whopping number of political parties in Lagos State, it has become absolutely necessary for the stakeholders, especially the political parties, to pay serious attention to voter education.

The INEC boss, who said such education would enable voters cast their ballots rightly in the forthcoming elections, lamented voters apathy in bye elections conducted in the state, where less that than four per cent of registered voters participated.

Olumekun said a major challenge of the commission was how about 1.5million PVCs yet to be collected would get to their owners, urging stakeholders to mobilise residents for collection.

“To conduct free, fair, credible and acceptable elections is quite an arduous task, but I want to assure you that the commission is not leaving anything to chance.

“Undoubtedly, we cannot achieve a seamless and successful election without your cooperation.

“We solicit your unalloyed support and genuine advice on every aspect of our operation.

“We all have crucial roles to play to ensure a peaceful and credible outcome, which will further affirm the maturity of our electoral process in particular and our democracy in general, he said.

Olumekun assured stakeholders that INEC was committed to credible elections and would do everything within the ambit of the law to ensure that votes count.

Also speaking, Mrs Ijeoma Okey-Igbokwe, the Head of Department, Voter Education, INEC, urged the stakeholders to step up voter education and sensitisation of voters in order to give democracy its meaning.

“A situation where only 2.9 percent of voters make decision for the whole people in an election is appalling.

Religious leaders, traditional rulers, private organisations and everyone should take part in giving democracy its meaning,’’ Okey-Igbokwe said.

The event had in attendance several Civil Society Organisations, political parties, security agencies and the Organised Private Sector, among others.
