FG Committed To Reduction Of Housing Deficit–Minister

Malam Suleiman Zarma, the Minister of State II for Power, Works and Housing, says the Federal Government is committed to the reduction of  the nation’s housing deficit, put at over 17 million, through its National Housing Programme (NHP).

Zarma spoke on Thursday in Abuja at the inauguration of a three-block of 12 units of two bedroom flats in Lugbe, Abuja.

The structure was built by the Staff Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (SMCS) of the Housing Sector, Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

The minister commended the foresight, innovative ideas and the efforts of SMCS officials for taking a giant step to address the housing needs of its members.

He said the project was in line with the core mandate of the ministry to ensure adequate, affordable and sustainable housing delivery in the country.

“The ministry’s present leadership is committed to advancing the cause of the welfare of staff.

“Talking about support, I mean providing you with some technical and logistic assistance to realise your objectives, he said.

He urged the leadership of the society to ensure that their structures were built on lands that were properly acquired in line with laid down rules.

In his remarks, Mr Frant Ijiofor, the Chairman of SMCS said the project was executed at the cost of N86.5 million through direct labour.

He solicited Federal Government’s assistance  in the construction of roads leading to the society’s housing projects spread across FCT.

Sudan says ready to work with US to get off terror blacklist

n Thursday welcomed a US announcement that Washington was willing to remove Khartoum from its blacklist of state sponsors of terrorism and said it was ready to cooperate.

The US State Department Wednesday said Washington was prepared to “initiate the process of rescinding Sudan’s designation as a state sponsor of terrorism” if Khartoum undertakes more reforms.

It called on Sudan to engage in further anti-terrorism cooperation and improve its human rights record, and act on outstanding claims related to terrorism as well as work to resolve internal conflicts.

The announcement came after talks Tuesday in Washington between US Deputy John Sullivan and Sudanese Foreign Minister Al-Dierdiry Ahmed.

The Sudanese foreign ministry said the talks marked the “launching of the second phase of the strategic dialogue with the United States” aimed at bolstering “bilateral cooperation” between the two countries and achieving “progress in a number of fields of mutual concern”.

A statement said Sudan “welcomes” these talks and the US announcement that it was “ready to engage in a process to remove Sudan from a list of state sponsors of terrorism” in stages.

The statement stressed Sudan’s “readiness to engage” in steps aimed at “reaching the aspired goals”.

Washington blacklisted Sudan in 1993 over its alleged links with Islamist extremists, and in 1998 it struck Khartoum with cruise missiles.

Al-Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden lived in Sudan between 1992 to 1996.

In October 2017, Washington lifted decades-old sanctions on Sudan following improved relations between the two countries.

Officials say blacklisting Sudan is holding back it crisis-hit economy from recovering as international banks, global financial institutions and investors remain wary of conducting commercial transactions with the country.

Liverpool stars must take blame for Euro slump – Lallana

Adam Lallana admits Liverpool’s players must take the blame for their Champions League woes after their shock defeat by Red Star Belgrade.

Jurgen Klopp’s side has squandered a comfortable position in Group C after losing two of their last three matches.

Their 2-0 loss at Red Star on Tuesday was a major blow given they had already lost to Napoli earlier in the campaign.

The Reds face Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital and Napoli at home in their final group game, with their progress to the last 16 suddenly uncertain.

A loss to French champions PSG would leave them facing a nail-biting shoot-out with Napoli and Liverpool midfielder Lallana knows his team have no excuses for their predicament.

Lallana, still edging his way back to full match sharpness after a period out with injury, knows it is time to step up for the team that finished as Champions League runners-up last season.

“As players, we’ve got to take full responsibility and make sure it doesn’t happen again,” Lallana told LFCTV.

“It’s still in our hands — if we win our next two games we go through, but that was a great opportunity missed for us.

“It’s going to be very tough. That’s the Champions League — there are no teams that enter this competition that give you wins.

“It wasn’t like us and we need to move on and improve if we’re going to go through to the knockouts.

“Of course there’ll be a reaction. It’s not the first time we’ve lost games, it’s about how you react and bounce back, but we’re thoroughly disappointed to come away (from Belgrade) with nothing.”

Liverpool have won just three of their last nine matches, against Red Star, Cardiff and Huddersfield.

They conceded a goal from a corner and another from a loss of possession and quick counter-attack against Red Star.

“It was a slow start all round really and we gave them far too many opportunities, especially from set-pieces,” Lallana said.

“We had chances but we weren’t ruthless enough, weren’t patient enough. It’s not like us.

“It’s on us to take responsibility and we need to bounce back in the next two games.”

Army Restores Normalcy In Yobe Community After Failed Terrorists’ Attack

The Nigerian Army said the situation at Katarko in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State had been brought under control after troops foiled an attempted attack by terrorists on the military location in the town.

The army spokesman, Brig.-Gen Texas Chukwu, in a statement on Thursday, said that the troops immediately swung into action following a tip-off and pushed the terrorists backward with superior firepower.

He, however, said some of the terrorists escaped into nearby bushes but efforts were on to get them, adding that the troops were currently embarking on clearance patrol in the area.

Chukwu urged Yobe residents in general and Katarko in particular, to go about their legitimate businesses and report any suspicious activities or movement in their area to the law enforcement agents for prompt action.

Ronaldo scores but Man United stun Juve with two late goals

(From L, Front) Manchester United's Chilean striker Alexis Sanchez, Manchester United's French striker Anthony Martial, Manchester United's English midfielder Ashley Young, Manchester United's Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera, Manchester United's English midfielder Jesse Lingard and Manchester United's Swedish defender Victor Lindelof and (From L, Rear) Manchester United's Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea, Manchester United's Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic, Manchester United's English defender Chris Smalling, Manchester United's French midfielder Paul Pogba and Manchester United's English defender Luke Shaw pose for a team photo prior to the UEFA Champions League group H football match Juventus vs Manchester United at the Allianz stadium in Turin on November 7, 2018. (Photo by Isabella BONOTTO / AFP)

Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first Champions League goal for Juventus but a stunning Manchester United comeback snatched a 2-1 win for the Premier League side to delay the Italians’ passage to the last 16 on Wednesday.

Ronaldo struck with a magnificent first-time volley on 65 minutes to seemingly leave Juve on course for the knockout phase, but Juan Mata equalised with an 86th-minute free-kick before Leonardo Bonucci turned into his own net.

Delighted United manager Jose Mourinho walked out onto the pitch at the Allianz Stadium cupping his ears and winking towards the crowd after a win that gave his side seven points from four games — two points behind leaders Juventus with two matches to play in Group H.

Juventus had proved wasteful with Sami Khedira and Paulo Dybala both hitting the woodwork before five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo brought the capacity 41,470 crowd to their feet when he hammered home Bonucci’s long pass from just inside United’s half.

“It’s not that we spoiled his (Ronaldo) goal, but five minutes from the end this shouldn’t have happened basically,” said Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri, whose side fell to their first defeat of the season.

“It leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, but we can’t win all the time. It’s better to have this type of stumble tonight.

“What really annoys me is losing a match we deserved to win, but at this stage it doesn’t matter that much, we still have nine points.”

It was the eighth goal this season for the 33-year-old Ronaldo who arrived from Real Madrid in July in a deal estimated to cost 340 million euros in total over four years, on top of the 110 million-euro transfer fee.

It was also the 121st Champions League goal for the player who holds the all-time record, and first since the 90th-minute penalty he scored for Real Madrid against Juventus in their dramatic quarter-final, second leg in Spain last April.

“We played a fantastic game, to our top level, as we cannot be any better than this,” said Mourinho.

“A point or three would have changed little for Juventus, but three points makes a big difference to us.”

United ride luck
Allegri had urged his side to achieve their first aim of the season by reaching the last 16, and a draw would have been enough.

Manchester United were without injured forward Romelu Lukaku with Alexis Sanchez taking his place alongside Jesse Lingard and Anthony Martial.

Ronaldo came close after five minutes when Bonucci laid it on for Dybala on the edge of the box, with the Argentinian chipping it over for Ronaldo whose volley was blocked by Victor Lindelof.

But the hosts sprung into action on the half-hour with a low Juan Cuadrado cross taking a deflection off Nemanja Matic’s knee before David De Gea reacted superbly to keep the ball out.

Ronaldo then teed up Khedira but the German’s low shot rattled the base of the post after 35 minutes.

United were then saved by the crossbar after the break with a curling Dybala effort flying over De Gea only to fail to dip enough.

But Ronaldo broke the deadlock when Bonucci curled over a pass which flew over Lindelof and straight into the path of Ronaldo who volleyed in past a helpless De Gea.

United though had the final word as Mourinho brought on Mata and Marouane Fellaini, who helped turn the game round in just four minutes, the Spaniard bending in a free-kick from the edge of the box to give the visitors a scarcely-deserved equaliser.

Juve were then left in shock as Ashley Young’s free-kick from the left bounced in off a combination of Bonucci and Alex Sandro after a frantic scramble in front of goal.

Mourinho conceded he had got carried away with his celebration.

“They insulted me for 90 minutes. I came here to do my job, nothing more,” said the former Inter Milan coach.

“I didn’t offend anyone at the end, I just made a gesture that I wanted to hear them louder. I probably shouldn’t have done it, with a cool head I wouldn’t have.”
