Europa League: Arsenal, Chelsea Through To Last 32, Marseille Out

arsenal

Arsenal and Chelsea were among seven teams to reach the UEFA Europa League knockout stage on Thursday, while last year’s runners-up Olympique de Marseille were eliminated at the group phase.

The two English Premier League teams were joined by Eintracht Frankfurt, Lazio, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Zurich and Dinamo Zagreb in the last 32.

But there are two games still to play before the draw for the next round in Nyon, Switzerland on Dec. 17.

Arsenal qualified with a 0-0 draw against Sporting at The Emirates, although striker Danny Welbeck was carried off on a stretcher in the first half with a serious ankle injury.

Chelsea won 1-0 at BATE Borisov in one of the early kickoffs.

A heavily-changed Arsenal side were unable to break down a dogged Sporting team, who were reduced to 10 men in the 88th minute.

That was when defender Jeremy Mathieu fouled striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as he raced towards the area.

However, the point was enough to guarantee the north London side a place in the last 32 atop Group E on 10 points, with Sporting behind them on seven.

Vorskla Poltava lost 1-0 to FK Qarabag, with both teams on three points.

Arsenal forward Welbeck was taken off on a stretcher and given oxygen in the 25th minute after landing awkwardly when jumping for a header.

The incident came only hours after he was named in the England squad for their next internationals.

Earlier, Chelsea’s France striker Giroud got his first goal this season in the second half to secure a win at BATE, meaning Maurizio Sarri’s side have qualified from Group L.

“I think the first target in this competition was to qualify and now the second target is to win our group. So, I think we need one more point, the Italian coach said.

“It’s very important because then we can talk again about this competition in February, when we will have another target.

Chelsea have yet to lose under Sarri so far this season.

Marseille were dumped out when they lost 2-1 at Lazio in Group H.

Goals from Marco Parolo and Joaquin Correa were enough to extend a miserable run for the French side, who have now lost four games in a row in all competitions.

Lazio, meanwhile, went through along with Eintracht who eliminated Apollon Limassol with a 3-2 victory in the other game in the section.

Leverkusen joined both teams in the next stage after beating FC Zurich 1-0 at home in Group A but thanks to Ludogorets 0-0 draw with AEK Larnaca the Swiss side also progressed.

Dinamo Zagreb beat Spartak Trnava 3-1 to qualify from Group D while Anderlecht, UEFA Cup winners in 1983, were eliminated after their 2-0 defeat by Fenerbahce in the same group.

Sevilla, the most successful team in the history of the competition with five titles, went down to 10-men at Akhisarspor but came away with a 3-2 win in Group J.

A late Ever Banega penalty kick ended the Turkish side’s qualifying hopes.

There was a goalfest in Russia as Spartak Moscow came from 3-2 behind to lead Rangers 4-3 in two minutes before the hour mark.

The home side’s eventual win took them to second place and level with their opponents on five points in Group G.

Rangers’ domestic rivals Celtic kept their hopes alive with a 2-1 win over RB Leipzig in Group B, while AC Milan and Real Betis took a step towards qualifying with a 1-1 draw in Group F.

Politics: Thousands of people rally in support of Mueller in nationwide demonstrations — here's how it played out

Protesters gather in front of the White House in Washington, November 8, 2018, as part of a nationwide "Protect Mueller" campaign.

Jeff Sessions' resignation as attorney general could spell trouble for special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.

Thousands of people protested across the US on Thursday to demand the protection of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into the possible collusion between President Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russia.

Jeff Sessions' resignation as attorney general on Wednesday sparked worries for the future of Mueller's probe. Sessions vexed Trump by recusing himself from Mueller's investigation in 2017, an act that Trump has berated him for throughout his presidency.

Trump's decision to name Matthew Whitaker as Sessions' acting replacement fueled more concerns. Whitaker is considered by some to be a Trump loyalist who publicly spoke out against the Russia investigation.

Whitaker also stated he would not recuse himself from the Mueller probe as attorney general, or approve any subpoena request from Mueller.

Here's how the protests unfolded across the country:

Nigeria replace injured Ighalo with Onyekuru for South Africa

October 3, 2018: Galatasaray's Henry Onyekuru in action with FC Porto's Danilo Pereira REUTERS/Miguel Vidal

Nigeria have replaced injured striker Odion Ighalo with Galatasaray forward Henry Onyekuru for an upcoming 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa.

China-based Ighalo, who plays for Changchun Yatai, is the leading scorer in the Africa Cup qualifiers with six goals.

But a hamstring injury that has sidelined him for five weeks means Onyekuru comes off the standby list to take his place in the Super Eagles squad, said the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

NFF spokesman Toyin Ibitoye said he expects the players who will replace key absentees like Ighalo, Shehu Abdullahi, Francis Uzoho and Wilfred Ndidi to rise to the occasion.

“It’s a massive blow to be without a player who has scored six goals in the last three matches for the Eagles,” Ibitoye said.

“So it’s a big challenge to fill this role, but we have a lot of options in this regard and it is left for the other players to rise to the occasion.

“Other players need to prove themselves worthy to the coaches and Nigerians that they can do it.”

Group E leaders Nigeria face second-placed South Africa on November 17 in Johannesburg.

Contractor behind Ganduje’s bribery videos accepts to testify before investigative panel

The contractor behind the videos showing Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano allegedly stashing large sums of dollar notes as bribes has expressed readiness to testify before the seven-man investigative panel of the Kano House of Assembly panel currently probing the matter.

As contained in a letter sent to the Chairman of the Investigative panel, through his lawyer, Saeed Muhd Twada, the contractor referred to as a ‘whistleblower’ said his allegation against Ganduje is strictly personal and demanded among a number of conditions that the panel must also have in attendance the governor, Jaafar Jaafar, publisher of Daily Nigerian newspaper, and one Aminu Daurawa.

Other listed conditions he wants fulfilled before his appearance include:

“That all the video clips will be submitted to two experts for forensic analysis and report — one, a serving officer of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the other an expatriate, while their bills will be paid for by the state.”

“That a Certified True Copy of the Report(s) prepared by the experts shall be made available to our client prior to his appearance.

“That our client has undertaken to surrender to the experts, the device used in capturing all the events in the video clips submitted and others yet to be submitted for discreet analysis and scrutiny.

“That all the proposed questions to be asked by the panel in the anticipated session shall not be more than TEN (10) and shall be forwarded to our client in advance.

“That the sitting be restricted to limited persons and that our client should be allowed to wear mask, bear pseudo name and receive protection from authorities for himself, family and business undertakings.

The development is coming days after a High court in Kano on Monday ordered the state house of assembly to stop investigating the allegations against Ganduje following a legal action undertaken by a pro-democracy group called Lawyers For Sustainable Democracy in Nigeria.

The panel has however insisted that there was no going back on the probe, citing constitutional provisions as support for its assignment.

Reps To Probe Allegations Of Irregularities In Party Primaries

ABUJA – The House of Representatives on Thursday set up an ad hoc committee to investigate allegations of irregularities and fraud perpetrated by political parties in the just concluded party primaries.

This followed complaints brought before it on the matter by the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers in the House, who cried out over the alleged irregularities and maltreatment meted out to them in the just concluded primary election of the party.

In a motion of urgent public importance, Abubakar Chika Adamu (Niger, APC), lambasted the ruling party for what he called lack of internal democracy in the conduct of the party primaries.

Adamu complained that Rafinya/Shiroro/Munya Federal Constituency of Niger State which he represents at the green chamber was affected by the irregularities and manipulations, accusing the party leadership of bias.

He further accused the party of orchestrating a scam and lamented that party nomination forms were too exorbitant and outrageous.

According to the lawmaker, the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC abdicated its responsibility during the primary elections as the supervisor of political parties as provided for in Sec 7 of the Electoral Act 2010 (as amended).

He further expressed displeasure over the conduct of some state governors, who he alleged were hell bent on installing of their stooges as governor in spite of clear provisions of the party’s constitution.

He also hinted that there were cases of violent attack on innocent citizens by thugs and party agents during the primary elections in his state.

The APC lawmaker, therefore, asked the House to set up a committee to investigate the matter and have a report on the party’s primary.

Speaking in support, Adekunle Akinlade (Ogun, APC), who contested the governorship ticket of the party in his state and lost, said that the party shortchanged so many of its members during the exercise.

He stated that he won the Ogun State APC governorship primary but the  APC party leadership decided to share the position to other contenders for the ticket.

Also in his contributions, Muhammad Soba (Kaduna, APC), said that he felt shortchanged during the party primary in APC, his former party and added that the forms were too exorbitant.

Even PDP lawmakers such as Nnenna Ukeje (Abia, PDP), Sergius Ogun (Edo, PDP) and some other lawmakers expressed displeasure over the conduct of the primary elections of their own party. However, they hailed the embittered APC lawmaker as he spoke on his own case shouting: “fire on, fire on.

The final heat came from Prof. Mojeed Alabi (Osun, APC) a professor of political science, who stated that the conduct of the APC primary was faulty and added that political parties by their formation and orientation are oligarchic in nature.

Giroud heads Chelsea past BATE, Rangers lose thriller at Spartak

Chelsea's French striker Olivier Giroud celebrates after scoring a goal during the UEFA Europa League group L football match between FC BATE Borisov and Chelsea FC in Borisov outside Minsk on November 8, 2018. Kirill KUDRYAVTSEV / AFP

Chelsea booked their place in the Europa League knockout stage as Olivier Giroud’s first club goal of the campaign gave Maurizio Sarri’s men a 1-0 win at BATE Borisov, while Rangers lost a seven-goal thriller against Spartak Moscow.

Giroud ended his 11-game goal drought this season by giving Chelsea a 53rd-minute lead, and the Premier League giants held on despite BATE striking the woodwork three times in the match.

“I was hoping to score soon because I came back late from the World Cup and I was lacking maybe a bit of efficiency and luck but you always need to keep working hard and keep the faith and that’s what happened tonight,” France striker Giroud told BT Sport.

The Londoners moved six points clear of Hungarians Vidi at the Group L summit and remain unbeaten in 17 matches since losing the Community Shield to Manchester City in August.

BATE started strongly and came within a whisker of taking an early lead as former Arsenal midfielder Alexander Hleb teed up Dmitri Baga for a long-range strike which crashed against Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga’s post.

The visitors quickly started to monopolise possession, but despite seeing over 70 percent of the ball in the first half, they failed to even manage a shot on target against a well-drilled BATE outfit.

But Sarri’s men were much improved after the break and Giroud, who also scored twice for Arsenal against BATE in the Europa League last term, broke the deadlock by meeting left-back Emerson’s cross with a firm downward header.

The hosts almost levelled just five minutes later, as they hit the woodwork for second time in the match when Nikolai Signevich diverted the ball onto the crossbar.

BATE coach Alyaksey Baha, the older brother of midfielder Dmitri, was left holding his head in his hands after Aleksey Rios blazed an even better chance to equalise over the bar.

There was still time for BATE to hit the post again, as right-back Rios’ brilliant dipping volley beat Kepa but bounced to safety.

– Gerrard finally beaten in Europe –
Steven Gerrard’s Rangers saw their 11-game unbeaten run in this year’s Europa League come to a dramatic end as they threw away the lead three times in a 4-3 defeat at Spartak Moscow.

Both sides were the beneficiaries of comical own goals in a crazy first half which ended with Glenn Middleton putting the Scots 3-2 ahead, but Luiz Adriano and Sofiane Hanni both scored in the space of 71 seconds to snatch Spartak victory.

Rangers are now level on points with Spartak in an incredibly tight Group G, one point behind leaders Villarreal after the Spaniards’ goalless draw with Rapid Vienna in Austria.

Elsewhere, Eintracht Frankfurt qualified for the last 32 with their fourth win from as many group games by beating Apollon Limassol 3-2 in Cyprus, while Lazio joined them in progressing from Group H as goals from Marco Parolo and Joaquin Correa secured a 2-1 win over Marseille to eliminate last season’s runners-up.

Record five-time winners Sevilla needed a late penalty from Ever Banega to claim a 3-2 victory at Akhisar Belediyespor, after having a man sent off, losing a two-goal lead and seeing the Turks miss a spot-kick of their own.Pablo Machin’s side are level with Krasnodar, who beat Standard Liege 2-1, at the top of Group J.
