Tech: Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel took a massive shot at Facebook's fake news problem (SNAP, FB)
Evan Speigel said social media came at a 'huge cost to facts.'
- Snapchat founder and CEO Evan Spiegel said the rise of social media came at "a huge cost to facts" and that it had "fuelled fake news."
- Writing in an op-ed for Axios, Spiegel made several barely veiled criticisms of his firm's biggest rival, Facebook, by describing social media as "mindless scrambles for friends."
- Snapchat is due to unveil a major overhaul of its app shortly, after a poor third quarter earnings performance and ongoing criticism that it's too difficult for normal people to use.
Snapchat founder and CEO Evan Spiegel took a direct shot at Facebook and Twitter in a blistering op-ed that claimed social media "fuelled" fake news and encouraged "mindlesss scrambles for friends."
In the piece, published in Axios ahead of a major overhaul of Snapchat's app, Spiegel takes direct aim at Facebook, which has been relentlessly cloning Snapchat's features over the last year.
He begins the op-ed with: "The personalized newsfeed revolutionized the way people share and consume content. But let's be honest: this came at a huge cost to facts, our minds and the entire media industry.
"This is a challenging problem to solve because the obvious benefits that have driven the growth of social media — more friends! more likes! more free content! — are also the things that will undermine it in the long run."
Spiegel wrote that the drive to friend more people on social media makes it difficult to post somewhere like Facebook without feeling judged.
He added: "Social media fueled "fake news" because content designed to be shared by friends is not necessarily content designed to deliver accurate information. After all, how many times have you shared something you've never bothered to read?"
This is the first time that Spiegel has openly criticised Facebook (without actually naming Facebook), which has mercilessly cloned his app over the last year. His wife, Miranda Kerr, made headlines in February when she asked why Facebook had to "steal" his ideas.
His op-ed deals directly with the fact that his firm has largely escaped the fake news and misinformation issues which have swamped both Facebook and Twitter this year.
Facebook, Twitter, and Google were questioned in the US, and are being questioned in the UK, about their possible roles in Russian meddling in the US election and the Brexit referendum. But Snapchat has been noticeably absent from the grillings.
Spiegel wrote: "The Snapchat solution is to rely on algorithms based on your interests — not on the interests of "friends" — and to make sure media companies also profit off the content they produce for our Discover platform. We think this helps guard against fake news and mindless scrambles for friends or unworthy distractions."
Spiegel's answer is, unsurprisingly, his own redesigned app.
The new app will still open into the camera as usual, but entails a major user interface overhaul that should make it easier to use. Spiegel also hinted that Snapchat would adopt a Facebook-style news feed somewhere within the app — though in his op-ed, he said this won't be curated by friends as per Facebook, but by a Netflix-style algorithm.
He wrote: "Netflix uses machine-learning algorithms to recommend content to subscribers based on what they watched in the past. Research shows that your own past behavior is a far better predictor of what you're interested in than anything your friends are doing."
Spiegel might be bullish against Facebook in particular, but Snapchat's stock price has nosedived 44% in the year to date, while Facebook's is up 56% over the same period. Bloomberg described Snapchat as a "disaster" after its float, as investor confidence plunged. In its most recent quarterly results, the firm took a $40 million (£30 million) inventory charge on its Spectacles after misjudging demand, while revenue was lower than expectations.

Cazorla Undergoes Fresh Surgery, Comeback Bid Prolongs
Arsenal and Spanish midfielder, Santi Cazorla, has confirmed that he has had to undergo surgery on the tendon in his foot, which has further delayed his comeback.
Cazorla last played for Arsenal in October 2016 after he was injured in a Champions League game.
In a recent interview with Marca, Cazorla stated that he wanted to get back onto the pitch in the New Year, but later released a statement on his verified Twitter handle, confirming that his comeback time has been pushed back due to further surgery.
“Some discomfort in the tendon that had dragged the last few days, I have had to undergo surgery. It is delaying the date of return to the playing field. I maintain the motivation to enjoy my great passion, soccer,” Carzola tweeted.
The Spaniard’s contract with Arsenal is set to expire at the end of this season.
The former Villarreal midfielder joined Arsenal in 2012 from Malaga and has won three FA Cups with the London club.

Court dissolves 10-year-old marriage over claims of wife not respecting her husband
An Idi-Ogungun Customary Court at Agodi in Ibadan on Tuesday dissolved a 10-year-old marriage between John Bamidele and his wife, Yinka, over her disrespectful manners.
Bamidele had sought for the dissolution of the marriage on the ground that Yinka neither respected him nor obeyed his instructions as a husband.
In his testimony before the court, the plaintiff said that all efforts made to correct her wrongdoings always proved abortive.
“Therefore, I can no longer live with her so as to avoid her disrespectful way of life.
“Moreover, she is very stubborn, troublesome and in the habit of cursing neighbours whenever they have any little misunderstanding,‘’ he said.
Yinka, in her defence, blamed her husband for disrespecting him, saying that the plaintiff had never proved to be a responsible husband.
According to her, payment of school fees, clothing, feeding and other finances of the three children of the marriage were her sole responsibility.
She urged the court to do the wish of her husband by dissolving the marriage.
The President of the court, Chief Mukaila Balogun, upheld the prayer of the plaintiff and dissolved the marriage.
Balogun gave custody of the first child of the marriage to the plaintiff and ordered that the remaining two kids should remain with the defendant.
He also directed the plaintiff to pay N7,000 as monthly feeding allowance for the two kids. NAN

Brazil footballers remembered one year after plane crash

Two army helicopters scattered flower petals over a town square Tuesday as part of sad tributes to the upstart Brazilian football team Chapecoense, most of whose players died in a plane crash exactly a year ago.
La Union, the town closest to the site of the accident on a mountainside near Medellin, Colombia, hosted a commemorative ceremony.
The names of the late players and team staff — members of a modest squad that was about to play in a championship game — were read aloud in the town plaza.
The crash killed 71 of the 76 people aboard the plane operated by the Bolivian carrier LaMia. The team lost most of its players and coaches. Only three players survived.
A probe into the crash determined the plane ran out of fuel and was overloaded.
“Glory was close,” said Andres Botero, president of Atletico Nacional, the Colombian team that Chapecoense was going to play in the final of the Copa Sudamericana tournament last year.
“Tragedy crushed their dream,” Botero added.
A memorial plaque was unveiled in the town square as part of the remembrance activities, which were also to feature two Masses and flyover of the crash site by a Colombian air force jet.
A separate memorial ceremony was planned for just after midnight in the town of Chapeco itself.
The plane crash took place a year ago Tuesday Colombia time, early Wednesday Brazil time.
An outpouring of tributes came from towering figures in the world of football.
“Today my heart is in Chapeco,” Brazilian legend Pele wrote on Twitter. “It is a day to remember and pray for those who went to heaven too soon.”
Current Brazilian star Neymar told Spanish TV, “All of us Brazilians carry them in our hearts.”
On the road leading to the hill where the plane crashed — known now as Mount Chapeco — a farmer named Luis Albeiro Valencia has set up a monument erected to those killed in the tragedy.
It is a wooden replica of a plane beside two brick columns. One holds tires from the landing gear of the airliner that went down, the other a deflated football.
He said he was given the items in appreciation for helping with rescue operations that horrible night.
Of the monument, Albeiro Valencia said: “It is to remember. So people will not forget them, because with time everyone will probably forget this hill.”

Drug Abuse, A Nation’s Looming Epidemic!

Travelling across country by road has become indeed scary. The roads are bad to say the least, but the real danger is the fact that most drivers, particularly commercial drivers, “shine their eyes well, well” before they start out on their journeys!
Motor parks across the nation have become points of drug and alcohol sales! I actually live near such a terminus and I can tell you that it is bad. I live in Asokoro Abuja, close to AYA Roundabout, which is now a taxi and bus terminus of sorts. Drivers hangout there while awaiting their turns! While they hangout, they consume all “every every”!
Right in the park, you can see them quaffing all manner of hot drinks and smoking Indian hemp as well. And all is, in the full glare of VIO officers. You can also see uniformed men openly cavorting and fraternising with both hemp and alcohol!
Cough syrup bottles litter their feet while tramadol is openly consumed and mixed with all manners of hot drinks some of which are laced with herbs and the like. You can now understand why cab and bus drivers often behave as though possessed. Indeed, they are!
Sadly enough, students are not left out in this new craze for mind-bending drugs! Universities, those citadels of learning are fast becoming palaces for drug dealers and drugged out students who have no value for human lives. Most people don’t seem to get that the student cult culture is also a drug culture. Their initiations always involve heavy alcohol and drug use.
It is their heavy drug use that numb their feelings to the point that they can without qualms behead fellow students who happen to be members of opposing cult groups!
When you consider the rise in horrendous and despicable crime in our clime, you realise how much drugs has degraded public morality and the sanity of the 20 to 50 year olds!
Women are not exempt either. Indeed, the Senate has a report that Kano and Jigawa states alone consume over 3 million bottles of Codeine laced cough syrup daily. It is now common to find girls as little as 12 years old, smoking Indian hemp in the open. Indeed, recently, I visited a friend in Karu area and the sight he showed me flabbergasted and suckered me. He took me to his bedroom window through which we could look down into a neighborhood joint. I could see school children in uniform buying and smoking Indian hemp. I could also see nursing mothers with babies on their backs smoking hemp and drinking ‘paraga’!
Indeed, we have an epidemic in our hands! We have an epidemic that has deep ramifications for the future of our country as well as for our security as a people!
And that is why all hands must be on deck to check the menace of drug abuse! Which is why this column must commend the Senate for their recent attempt to rise to the occasion! They passed a motion in an attempt to draw attention to the drug epidemic which is really threatening families and putting vulnerable kids in psychiatric wards!
These are kids who should otherwise be in schools and universities!
In the motion, Senator Baba Kaka Bashir Garbai (APC, Borno) said that drug abuse, especially cannabis and cocaine, had been a long-term problem among male youths in northern states.
“Codeine cough syrup and other prescriptive drugs have become as termed, ‘the new cancer ravaging women and girls in the North.’”
The lawmaker said that abuse of codeine syrup and other controlled drugs currently constituted the greatest challenge faced by youths and drug officers in Northern Nigeria.
He noted that there were several reports about young girls in tertiary institutions in the country who had taken to an alarming abuse of the Codeine cough syrup.
“This problem is destroying even the mothers in homes as they use same codeine and other drugs as an escape from their abusive relationships and invariably get hooked on them,” Garbai said.
Is anyone therefore surprised at the spate of domestic violence that is ravaging the land?
It is time we all woke up to the fact that drugs have made a grand entry into our cities, our towns, our villages and possibly our homes!
And unless we face up and take steps to contain the scourge, it may like corruption overcome us!
The obvious fact is the influence of foreign media but there is also the fact that parental structures have become weak coupled by the fact that our children have very little to look up to. Their lives are basically hopeless and full of voids. Unfortunately, they use drugs to fill the void!

Aiteo Federation Cup champions, Akwa United and MFM FC will clash in the in other opening day fixture.
According to the fixture schedule released by the League Management Company on Wednesday, the two clubs will compete in Group A of the competition along with the home- based Super Eagles.
Hosts Kano Pillars are the other team in Group B along with Akwa United and MFM.
The first placed teams in the two groups will qualify for the final which will be decided on Sunday, December 17.
Rivers United won the last edition of the competition in Enugu.

Super Eagles: NFF President, Amaju Pinnick says Nigeria will win the World Cup
Many pundits believe the Super Eagles can become one of the World Cup's dark horses
Nigerian Football Federation President, Amaju Pinnick raised the pressure and already high expectations on the Nigerian national team on Tuesday when he said that the Super Eagles will win the World Cup in Russia next year.
The statement was made at the unveiling of the shortcode *1945#, which will be used for all campaigns related to Nigeria’s involvement in the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals in Russia.
The event was organised in collaboration with Secure and Trusted Alliance Services, an internet network and services company.
The Eagles are seen as one of the teams capable of being dark horses at the Mundial in Russia.

Besides having the youngest squad, the nature of the qualification from a so-called group of death and a resounding 4–2 win over tournament favourites, Argentina, have led many to expect exploits in Russia.
“Our target is to be the first African nation to win the World Cup. We have young players that can do it. Rohr is not only building a team of today, he is building a future team,” Pinnick said.
Coach Gernot Rohr has just signed a two-year extension on his contract that extends his stay to 2018.
The NFF President continued his trope by saying that the German’s contract extension was made to stop other teams from poaching him if Nigeria wins the World Cup.
He also re-iterated the federation’s commitment to securing friendly matches against highly-ranked teams as the team looks to prepare for the World Cup.

“After the World Cup draws all plans for the Eagles preparation for Russia 2018 would be made known through a press conference on December 10.”, he added.
“But I can assure Nigerians that the Eagles would be playing grade A matches to prepare for the World Cup. Victory against Argentina in the friendly has given the Eagles advantage to be among the best teams in the world,” he continued.
As it stands, the Super Eagles will be heading into Russia with high expectations on their shoulders. Former international Victor Ikpeba has said that he thinks the Eagles will make it to the quarter-finals for the first time ever.
Teams participating at the World Cup will be looking forward to knowing their group stage opponents when the draw is held at the Kremlin Palace on Friday, December 1.

On Friday, 1 December, the most important football date in the end-of-the-year calendar, the Super Eagles will know which teams they will be up against at the 2018 World Cup.
The draw for the most important global event of 2018 will be held in Moscow on Friday with 32 of the world’s best national teams and Nigerians, like the rest of the world, are eager to know who their team will be drawn against.

An American trial lawyer has been waxing lyrical about an honest Nigerian Uber driver who returned $700 he misplaced in his cab.
A top lawyer in the United States, Rogelio Garcia, has continued to celebrate an honest Nigerian Uber driver identified as Adekunle, who traced him and returned the sum of $700 he forgot in his cab.
The Houston, Texas-based Garcia who describes himself as a trial lawyer and a staunch opponent of American President Donald Trump, was so impressed by Adekunle's act of honesty, took to his verified Twitter account to shower encomium on the Uber driver.

The lawyer narrated how he misplaced the money which is about N252, 000 by the current exchange rate in Adekunle's cab and the honest Nigerian, without knowing who he was and his address, did everything possible to trace him and return the money.
He added that he was very impressed by the act coming from a man who is from a country where many of its citizens are seen to be corrupt and dishonest.
He even made a Twitter video capturing the moment Adekunle returned the money and how he gave him a $100 tip in appreciation.

North Korea's missile test on Tuesday sent two big messages: The entire US, including the White House, is in range, and it's not interested in talking peace with the US.
The missile flew higher and longer than any previous test and demonstrated a range that experts say encompasses the entire continental US.
North Korea has tested intercontinental ballistic missiles before, but failed to convince scientists that it could hit important targets like Washington, D.C.
Now both the nature and the timing of North Korea's missile launch suggests that Kim Jong Un can hold the White House under threat, and has no interest any olive branches it extends.
What North Korea wants
Joseph Yun, the State Department's top North Korea official, said that the US offered to open up dialogue with Pyongyang if it agreed with the US to pause missile launches for 60 days.
Tuesday's launch came after a 74-day pause, which North Korea could have capitalized on to materialize talks.
The defiant launch matches the statement a North Korean official gave CNN in October.
The official said: "Before we can engage in diplomacy with the Trump administration, we want to send a clear message that the DPRK has a reliable defensive and offensive capability to counter any aggression from the United States."
Tuesday's launch likely sought to deter the US from attacking North Korea for fear of nuclear strikes.
While doubts remain over the missile's actual ability to deliver a heavy nuclear warhead to distant targets in the US, North Korea carried out the launch with the speed and stealthiness that suggest a capability to pull off a real-world nuclear strike on the US.
The test follows record-high tensions with the US and North Korea sentencing President Donald Trump to death for his insults against its dictatorial regime and Trump placing North Korea on the state sponsors of terror list.
Where North Korea backed down
But for all of North Korea's boldness in firing the missile, they did hold back in one important way.
Previous ICBM tests from North Korea overflew Japan, which led to political fallout and increased missile defenses in the region.
By stopping this launch short of Japan and landing it in the sea, North Korea declined to chance Japan-based missile defenses downing the missile, as Trump has advocated for.
Trump appeared to take the newly validated nuclear threat on the White House in stride, saying only that "it is a situation that we will handle."
The US and South Korea will begin a large-scale military drill involving stealth fighter aircraft in December.

Pope Francis: ‘The church is anything but a supermarket’ — Pontiff
The Catholic leader wants people to treat the church better.
Pope Francis is sharing his idea of what the church should be.
According got the Pontiff, the House of God is not a supermarket, adding that people should be able to tell the difference as soon as they enter.
In his words, it is “sad” when someone enters goes into a parish or bishop’s house and does not “whether we are in the house of God or in a supermarket.”
Referring to the Gospel reading from Luke, where Jesus drove the merchants from the temple, Pope Francis complained about clerics charging for sacraments.

Noting that God does not make people pay for salvation, he said, “That money is needed to maintain the buildings, provide for the priests, etc. … but responded by saying, “Give freely, and God will do the rest. God will give what is lacking.”
Vatican Radio reports that the Pontiff also advised people to keep the church clean by being watchful, serving and giving freely.

Nnamdi Kanu: A brief walk into the life of the IPOB leader
The war which claimed the lives of over three million people, ended in his village, Afara; being the place Ojukwu took off from to Ivory Coast.
Apart from the fact that Nnamdi Kanu is an Ibo man, there are other things that seem to bind him with the Indigenous People of Biafra.
He was born the year the war started.
His father, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu, played a major role during the war by conveying much-needed aid to soldiers and civilians during the civil war.
What is left of the last headquarters of the Biafran army is not far from Kanu's family's home.
The war which claimed the lives of over three million people, ended in his village, Afara; being the place Ojukwu took off from to Ivory Coast.
Born to HRM Eze Israel Okwu Kanu (JP) and Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu in Isiama Afara, Abia State, Nnamdi Kanu attended Library Avenue Primary School and went on to Government College Umuahia for his secondary education.
He would gain admission into the University of Nigeria Nsukka but left for London to study political science at London Guildhall University, two years later.
It is believed, however, that political scientists see themselves engaged in revealing the relationships underlying political events and conditions, and from these revelations, they attempt to construct general principles about the way the world of politics works.
It is with this spirit that Nnamdi Kanu became the operating director of Radio Biafra; a radio station that was founded by the government of the defunct Republic of Biafra.
Being the activist he deemed himself, and fully supported by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu preached the message of secession through the radio station in a voice which many have criticized as capable of inciting another Civil War.

And while the criticism was mostly from other ethnic groups within the country, members of the Indigenous People of Biafra praised and revered him: To them, he was more of a promised Messiah.
Nevertheless, Nnamdi Kanu was arrested in Lagos on 14 October 2015 for treason. The news of the arrest would generate protests across parts of Delta State, Enugu State, Rivers State, Cross River State, Abia State, Imo State, and Anambra State.
Although it was reported five days later that he was granted bail, it was not the case. Nnamdi Kanu was remanded for over a year-and-a-half.
During this period, Kanu regularly appeared in court wearing a Jewish prayer shawl and head covering; claiming that he was a jew because he believes in Judaism.
He would be released from prison on bail on 28 April 2017. And the honour that was accorded him by the Indigenous People of Biafra was godlike.
Young men and women were often seen bowing before him. Hundreds of people were always in his proximity. Mini rallies with thousands of people were held here and there. And for a moment it seems like fulfilment had finally come for him.
However, Nnamdi Kanu's glory days were cut short as soldiers stormed his village and made a show of what they were made of on 14 September 2017.
The result did not only leave his father's house in a state that cannot be described with words, it also claimed the lives of quite a good number of people (as reported).
Thus leading to the unknown whereabouts of the eloquent speaker.
Nnamdi Kanu has allegedly been accused to have disappeared with embezzled funds that were donated to promote the cause; resulting in a speculated dethronement from the position of IPOB leader.
The outcome of this is still creating a lot of mixed feelings; people who wouldn't have given it a thought are now beginning to question his credibility with mockery as others seem to be hiding their disappointment in silence.
But like trees deeply rooted to the earth, the conviction of many people remains unshaken: They claim that the allegation against him is false.
To these ones, there's nothing that would be said to make them think otherwise.
Certainly, just like Ojukwu, Nnamdi Kanu has succeeded writing his name on the history book of Nigeria. And, however, the story turns out to be in the future, his name will always be in the heart of the Indigenous People of Biafra.

Ndidi Earns Top Rating In Leicester Win Vs Spurs
By James Agberebi: Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was one of Leicester City’s players that got top ratings in their 2-1 win against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Tuesday night at the King Power Stadium, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.
Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez were on target for Leicester on 13 and 45 minutes respectively in the impressive win against Spurs.
Spurs’ goal was scored by Harry Kane 11 minutes from the end of the game.
According to Leicester’s players ratings by Leicester Mercury, Ndidi got eight out of 10, for his impressive showing for the Foxes.
Other players who also got eight were Kasper Schmeichel, skipper Wes Morgan, Ben Chilwell, Mahrez, Shinji Okazaki and Marc Albrighton.
Former Sevilla midfielder Vicente Iborra got the highest ratings – nine, for his outstanding showing.
The duo of Harry Maguire and Danny Simpson were however rated seven.
Commenting on Ndidi’s performance, Leicester Mercury stated:”His battling qualities were crucial to City’s cause.”

Mohammed Celebrates ‘New Beginning’ At Norwegian Club Sarpsborg
Exclusive By Adeboye Amosu: Former U-23 Eagles midfielder, Usman Mohammed, is eager to get his career back on track after penning a three-year deal with Norwegian club Sarpsborg 08, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.
Mohammed’s career stalled after he refused to feature for Portuguese club Nacional de Madeira last season over pay dispute.
He was freed from the shackles of Madeira after the Federation of International Football Federation, FIFA ruled that he was free to join another club following a petition by his agent.
After failing trials with Spanish giants Barcelona Team B, the former FC Taraba captain was offered the chance to train with Sarpsborg and the player did enough to earn a contract at the modest side.
“It’s a new beginning for me and I thank God all the troubles are over now,” Mohammed told Completesportsnigeria.com in an exclusive interview.
“I was not happy with the situation as I have not been able to play competitive football since the last olympics in Rio, Brazil, but the situation is normal now.
“I will be unveiled by the club on Sunday and look forward to joining my teammates for the pre-season in January.”
Sarpsborg finished in third position in the just concluded Norwegian League season and will face Lillestrom in the Norway Cup final on Saturday.
The new Norwegian League season is expected to kick off next February.
Mohammed featured at the 2015 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations which Nigeria won in Senegal, as well as at last year’s Rio Olympics, where the country clinched a bronze medal.
He was also part of the home-based Super Eagles team that played at African Nations Championship in Rwanda in 2016.
