Tackle resurgence of slave trade in Nigeria now ―NRCS boss warns FG

NIGERIA leaders have been urged to take proactive measures to avert the resurgence of the mass slave trade in the country.

Speaking in Awka, the state Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Red Cross Society, Professor Peter Katchy, enjoined the Federal Government to ensure effective enforcement of existing laws to curb illegal migration of Nigerians to protect them from the harrowing experience in the hands of human traffickers.

Katchy lamented that the slave market in Libya has become very lucrative with cartels expanding in the bestial trade on daily basis, while some unscrupulous Nigerians are deeply involved in the inhuman activities.

He explained that many Nigerian Youths in addition to obvious unemployment in the country are driven into illegal migration by the perceived need to elevate themselves from poverty under the illusion and misguided belief that life is always rosy abroad but are often disappointed after disposing of their merge resource.

Professor Kachy pointed out that the Federal Government is yet to provide basic infrastructure and environment to encourage entrepreneurship and increase investments that would create job opportunities and wealth creation thereby exposing the Youths to exploitation, blackmail, discrimination and trafficking as is presently the case in Libya.

While cautioning Youths against the get rich quick syndrome, he warned that the present practice of sailing vital organs like kidney, if not checked, would soon cause kidney failure epidemic and condemned the flagrant display of wealth by some people and abuse of the social system which, he pointed out is creating wrong role model in the society.

He called for a mass re-orientation of Nigerians on the need to uphold discipline, rule of law and promotion of national integrity, while the Federal Government should develop policies and programmes that will promote human resource development.

Also speaking, a community leader, Chief Daniel Ikeazor, called for more investment in the Agricultural sector to ensure effective harnessing of its abundant potential for the creation of more employment opportunities for the teeming Youths.
