Enugu – There is a seeming normalcy in the fuel distribution in Enugu State as queues at filling stations have reduced even as price of the commodity still remain high in the state.
Our correspondent, who moved round Enugu metropolis on Wednesday, observed that the fuel queues have reduced but the price of the commodity still remain very high in most filling stations.
As at the time this report was filed, only the NNPC mega stations and major marketers such as Oando, Total and Conoil were selling at the approved rate of N145 a litre.
Other marketers, who own about 70 percent of the filling stations in Enugu metropolis, still sell fuel at prices between N220 and N230 per litre.
Following the high cost of petrol, transport fares within Enugu metropolis, which rose during the yuletide, still remain very high.
As at Wednesday, a commercial bus drop in Enugu costs between N70 and N100 as against N30 and N50 before the fuel crisis started in December.
Some of the commercial bus operators, who spoke with our correspondent on Wednesday, said that they still buy fuel at exorbitant prices.
Commercial tricycle (keke) operators, who also spoke, blamed the high cost of fuel for the exorbitant fares they charge passengers.
“I buy fuel at N230 a litre and I have to recover the money I spent on fuel. If I want to go and queue up at NNPC mega station, then you will not see me on the road because it takes two days to get fuel at the mega station,” a keke operator said.
A source at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), who pleaded anonymity, accused Enugu State Government officials, especially an aide of the governor, of colluding with the marketers to frustrate efforts by the department in tackling the fuel crisis.
It was gathered that the governor’s aide approached the DPR and warned the agency to allow the marketers to do their business.
