Lagos teachers recruitment: Over 16,000 apply ahead of Thursday closure of portal

LagosNO fewer than 16,000 applications have so far been received by the Lagos State government for teaching job placement in the state-owned primary and secondary schools across the state.

This number as disclosed by the government official was received as of Monday’s night despite the slow application process, which is electronically-driven and due for closure this Thursday.

It will be recalled that the state governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, had early last month, directed the ministry of education to employ additional 2,200 teachers (1,000 for primary and 1, 200 for secondary) schools to augment the dearth of teachers in public schools in the state.

In compliance with the directive, the ministry had opened a dedicated online portal since Sunday midnight for interested candidates to file in their applications within four days the exercise would last.

However, many applicants have complained of their inability to log into the portal let alone complete their applications as required and now in fear that they may be denied of the opportunity to apply if the problem is not rectified before the closing schedule.

Our correspondent also attempted severally and at intervals on Tuesday to log into the portal (http://bit.ly/2wJfS1f) which is driven by the state’s ministry of science and technology but with no success. The system at every attempt complained of “invalid email or password, and please try again…

Reacting to the challenge, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Adebunmi Adekanye, confirmed that her ministry was aware of the problem and urged applicants to be patient as the problem is being fixed.

She stated this in a statement made available to newsmen by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs unit of the ministry, Mr. Adesegun Ogundeji, saying it was expected that the portal would be busy, given the huge number of applicants to register at the same time.

But she assured that the back-end team was working to regularly decongest the traffic to allow easy flow of more applications.

“So, there is no reason for applicants to panic as they have up to this Thursday to send in their applications, she stressed.

Adekanye, however, reiterated that the entire recruitment exercise would be fair and transparent with applicants need not knowing anybody to be employed.
