Labour ministry recommends NAF tailoring workshop for N-Power Programme

Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar

The Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment on Friday recommended the Nigerian Air Force Investment Limited (NAFIL) Tailoring Workshop for the basic and advance training of N-Power programme participants.

The Director Skills Acquisition of the ministry, Alhaji Muhammed Jibiya made the recommendation during the accreditation of tailoring workshop in Kaduna.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the workshop was inaugurated on June 11, 2017 to provide tailoring services to air force personnel and civilians.Jibia said, “we were here sometime in September, and we were satisfied with facility and the equipment we saw on ground and that is why we are here today to accredit the NAFIL workshop. He lauded the initiative of the Nigerian Air Force for coming up with such a workshop and called on other forces to emulate from the NAF.

In his remarks, the Managing Director of NAFIL, AVM Abubakar Bagari said the programme was the initiative of the Chief of Air staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar. Bagari added that the programme is aimed at making the Nigerian Air Force self sufficient in uniform production and boost the capacity of personnel.

This is also to reinforce the culture of self reliance, enhance professional performance and enforce the culture of prudent management of resources.“For the period of about one year and five months, the workshop has produced over 52, 000 pares of uniform for the Nigerians Air Force and other security agencies.

He recalled that the workshop was initially planned to be set up in partnership with a foreign company, of which NAFIL would have contributed N300 million.“But later the plan changed due to the policy of the force to enforce the culture of self reliance and today we were able to achieve this with N45 million without any partnership.

“With this initiative, we have been able to train and retrain our personnel in the field of tailoring, he added. Also, the Air Officer Commanding (AOC) Air Training Command Kaduna, AVM Mohammed Suleiman said NAF is poised to enhance skills acquisition of its personnel for self reliance.

Suleiman also explained that discipline and proper military training requires proper kitting which starts from the standard and quality of personnel uniforms. He noted that the Airforce had hitherto faced the challenge of low quality uniforms for its personnel, stressing that with the workshop, which is an initiative of the Chief of Air Staff, the challenge has now become a thing of the past.NAN report that no fewer than 113 NAF personnel and civilians are currently working in the workshop.

2018: 35.6m Foreigners Visit Turkey In First 10 Months

Turkey’s Culture and Tourism Ministry said on Friday that no fewer than 35.6 million foreigners visited Turkey in the first 10 months in 2018.

In the January-October period, the number of foreign tourists increased by 22.4 per cent compared to some 29 million in the same period in 2017.

According to official data, Antalya, the Mediterranean resort city, was on the top of popular destination list with 12 million foreign visitors during the period, followed by Istanbul, the biggest city in Turkey, with 11.3 million foreign visitors.

Turkey’s total tourism income increased by one per cent year-on-year in the third quarter of 2018, reaching $11.5 billion, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said.

Earlier this month, Turkish Culture and Tourism Minister, Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, told Anadolu Agency that the increase in the number of tourists showed that the tourism sector had experienced a rapid recovery.

“It looks like we will pass the 40 million foreign tourists mark and break Turkey’s record by the end of this year,’’ he said.

“I am expecting a 23 per cent increase in 2019.

“I hope we will reach the target of 48 million foreign tourists,’’ Ersoy added.

National Assembly Staff Set For Five-Day Protest Over Unpaid Salary Arrears

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) has concluded arrangements to ground activities at the National Assembly between December 4 and 8, 2018.

According to the association, the protest is a result of the failure of the management to address issues bordering on salary arrears and promotions.

This was disclosed at the end of the emergency congress of the association held on Thursday in Abuja.

The association resolved that picketing of the National Assembly will commence between 8am and 2pm daily, to press home their demands and get feedback on the Consolidated Legislative Salary Structure (CONLESS).

A communiqué signed by the Secretary General of the association, Suleiman Haruna, noted that PASAN has issued a two-week ultimatum to NASS to fulfill its demands, or else, they would embark on the strike.

“The President of the Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives should take urgent steps to nominate the would-be members of NASS Service Commission for appointment. That all pending staff promotions and conversion letters be released with arrears due fully paid on or before December 31st, among other requests,” the communiqué read.

Bature Musa, Chairman of the Association, also confirmed the decision of the congress, noting that the picketing would go on as planned, unless the management addresses their demands.

In October, more than 50 legislative aides had welcomed the lawmakers back from their annual recess with a protest at the chambers’ lobby, Bearing placards with various inscriptions, they claimed they had not been paid salaries, Duty Tour Allowances (DTA) and other entitlements.

Nigeria Customs seizes N3.06bn worth of tramadol, other drugs at Onne port

A container of Tramadol and other pharmaceutical products seized by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in Lagos

Mr Augustine Chidi, the Deputy Comptroller General of Customs in-charge of Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, announced the seizure in Port Harcourt.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has seized nine 40ft containers of tramadol and other controlled drugs with duty paid value of N3.06 billion at Onne Port, Rivers.

Mr Augustine Chidi, the Deputy Comptroller General of Customs in-charge of Enforcement, Investigation and Inspection, announced the seizure in Port Harcourt.

Chidi said the containers were falsely declared as containing PVC ball valves and general goods.

“You will recall that last week, Nigerian Customs Service announced the seizure of 50 containers in Lagos.

“This brings to a total of 59 containers of controlled drugs so far seized within this month,’’ Chidi said.

He said that the importation contravened “Section 46 of Customs and Excise Management Act Cap 45 LFN’’.

Chidi said that the Comptroller General of Customs, retired Col. Hameed Ali, ordered a thorough investigation to bring perpetrators to justice.

“Let me assure you that the NCS will not relent on its role of contributing to national economic and security well-being of Nigerians by ensuring that items that can negatively affect the citizenry are not allowed into the country,’’ he said.

According to him, NCS is increasingly relying on intelligence and technology to make it difficult for smugglers to have their way.

He called on the public, especially border community dwellers and port users to desist from importing illicit goods.

Chidi also called for public support for better performance by NCS and expressed concern that Nigeria was experiencing increasing attempts by unpatriotic elements to smuggle dangerous drugs into the country.

He said the increasing smuggling of controlled drugs into the country could be traced to the Christmas and New Year season as well as the coming elections in 2019.

According to him unscrupulous business men were exploiting the market provided by the seasons and elections in which some politicians might want to engage the youth in unwholesome activities.

“These elements are morally bankrupt and willing to make money at the expense of human lives. We must stop them as we all have a duty to protect our nation,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, the Controller, Area II Command of NCS, Comptroller Aliyu Saidu, said the command would perform better when it received one of the three scanners approved by the Federal Executive Council for the customs.

“It will greatly assist our command in checking crime and increase our revenue base,’’ Saidu said.
