AD Will Reclaim Oyo State In 2019 – Guber Candidate’s Spokesman

The Alliance for Democracy (AD) will reclaim its lost governorship seat in Oyo State in the 2019 general elections, Mr Adeniji Ademola, Director- General (D-G), Hakeem Oyedele Campaign Organisation, has said.
Ademola, who stated this on Monday in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ibadan, boasted that Mr Hakeem Oyedele, the AD governorship candidate in the state, would emerge winner of the election.
NAN recalls that AD won the governorship election in 1999 when the country returned to democratic rule after the administration of Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar handed over power to civilians.
He said that his confidence that the party would return to power in the state was anchored on its programmes.
He said AD’s programmes included free education, revival of agricultural, qualitative healthcare, youth employment and rural development, adding that the candidate was popular and credible.
AD candidate is a genuine progressive who is ready to run the affairs of the state like Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Bola Ige and Chief Lam Adesina.
People of the state have experienced different administrations and can now identify genuine progressives and pretenders.
There is no controversy that AD government during Lam Adesina era meant well for the people of Oyo State; so AD is back to continue the good work.
Alliance for Democracy is on a winning mission to liberate our people from poverty and bring rapid development to all the nooks and crannies of the state, the D-G of the campaign organisation stated.
Ademola urged all AD supporters and party members not to be discouraged by the alleged attack on the party’s gubernatorial candidate on Dec. 28.
He recalled that some unknown men traced Oyedele to his campaign office in Oke-Itunu area of Mokola, Ibadan and smashed the window screens of his jeep.
The attackers followed the Nissan Armada jeep, marked KJA 502 FH, of the AD candidate into the premises of the campaign office.
The unknown men smashed the window screens of the jeep as it stopped but our candidate was smart enough to escape from the vehicle.
Though we do not know the motive behind this attack, it is very unfortunate that we see ourselves in this kind of mess now that the polity is heating up, he said.’’
Ademola urged the police and other security agencies to rise up to their responsibilities and ensure protection of lives and property of Nigerians as the elections draw nearer.

Nigeria Experiencing Dearth Of Qualitative Leadership –  Usman Bugaje

Gombe – For Nigeria to move forward and its citizens live meaningful lives, educated Nigerians have been called upon to move in and take over the leadership of the country from the current leadership that has shown lack of preparedness for governance.

Speaking during the maiden annual lecture of ‘Dr. Suleiman Kumo Memorial Lecture’ on the topic, ‘Politics, Development and the Future of Nigeria: the nexus, the worries and the way out’, Former Political adviser to Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Dr. Usman Bugaje, said Nigeria was experiencing a dearth in people-oriented leadership because educated Nigerians have allowed the leadership of the country to fall in the hands of those who have nothing to offer.

The frontline public analyst and one time National Secretary of the defunct Action Congress (AC) spoke as a guest speaker during the lecture organized by the Old Students of Gombe Children and High School in honour of the renowned philanthropist and educationists, Late Dr. Suleiman Kumo, Founder of the School.

According to Dr. Bugaje, the reason why Nigeria has not gotten it right and may not get it right, is because the crop of politicians ruling the country now are bereft of the knowledge needed to take the country out of its current sorry state and that educated people unfortunately fold their arms while the country decays.

He regretted that “In the last two decades, our country has seen hopes raised severally and hopes dashed severally, adding that, “the return to a democratic civilian dispensation in 1999, following a long term spell of military rule, quite naturally, created a lot of relief and raised a lot of hopes.

He said, “This is reflected in the voter turnout for the 1999 elections (over 50 percent) and the excitement associated with the return of democracy. Eight years later poverty only doubled, despite the unprecedented oil revenue that accrued to the Nigerian State.

According to him, “Another four years later, $16billion was spent on power without a single increase in one megawatts of electricity and yet no one went to jail. In the last three years or so, we became the country with the largest out of school children and the emerging poverty capital of the world.

He said, this disappointment with democratic rule was reflected in the increasing frustration and the creeping violence as more people became socially and economically excluded and that despite these signals, the quality of life as well as the standard of governance continued to go down as the country go further down its democratic road.

Speaking on the way out, Dr. Bugaje said Nigerians must prioritize leadership and educated persons must be at the vanguard of this cause. He also suggested that with the quality of Nigeria’s leadership significantly going down, “we must prioritize competence rather than loyalty which we have often been blind to.

Suggesting that more educated persons be involved in politics, Dr. Bugaje emphatically said, “There has always been a large pool of professionals and other expertise outside the dungeon of our criminal and violent political culture, but they have always hesitated to move in, less they soil their hands in murky field of politics.

Quoting Plato of Greek antiquity, he said “if one does not go through the pains of being in politics, then one must be prepared to be ruled by someone who is inferior.

He opined that one of the first tasks of the salvage mission is to bring in clarity in the political discourse and raise it from the current sentimental pedestrian level to rational scientific level where knowledge and competence will be driving governance.

Organizers of the lecture series who spoke through one of the old students, Abdulrahman Aliyu, said the aim of organizing the lecture series was to unite the old students in order to develop the school further.

He said the lecture series which is expected to bring renowned intellectuals to speak on burning national and international issues, would be an umbrella that will bring old students together to benefit from their relationships in terms of mentoring and other development issues.

The occasion witnessed the presence of many old students who are known civil servants, politicians and businessmen among many others. A mini launching was held with the aim of assisting the school. Political party aspirants, royal fathers, State commissioners also graced the occasion.

FULL TEXT: New Year Message from President Muhammadu Buhari

APC

Dear compatriots,

It is my utmost pleasure to rejoice with all Nigerians as we enter the year 2019, which will be a very significant one for our country.

  1. At the turn of every year, we often use the opportunity to look back at the past and forward to the future. To review the outgoing year, its high and low points, successes and failures, and be fully thankful to God.

  1. We Nigerians are religious people, and we believe that God reigns and rules in the affairs of men. A time like this offers a precious opportunity for thanksgiving, stock taking and reflection on goals and targets set for the preceding year, and how much was accomplished. The ones not done can then be rolled over into a new year.

  1. The dawn of a New Year is also a time to look forward. To consider new prospects, unfold our plans, and prepare for landmark dates and events.

  1. 2019 will be an election year for us. In about two months, the polls are due, and we will elect leaders into various offices, at national and state levels.

  1. As I welcome you into 2019, I also reiterate my many promises and declarations that the general elections will be free, fair and credible.

  1. Elections need not be do or die affair, and we should not approach that eventuality in a democracy with trepidation and mortal fear. Happily, a large number of presidential candidates have committed to peace, and peace we shall have.

  1. Those who continue to trumpet falsehood and negativity are on their own, fighting a losing battle. The greater number of Nigerians are trusting and believing that we shall deliver on our promises for a level playing field at the polls, and that is what we shall do.

  1. Nigerians desire peace, security, prosperity, inclusiveness and infrastructural development, a nation they can be proud of, a country that can hold its own among the nations.

  1. That is the journey we have embarked on since we came onboard in 2015, and we are not distracted as we move on. We are resolved to build a country in which the resources are utilized for the benefit of the largest number, and not appropriated by a privileged few in their never-ending quest to satisfy their greed.  We are on this mission together, and I assure you of a firm commitment to the ideals of a safe, secure, fair, just and prosperous country.

  1. We have had our challenges: security, economic, political, social. But we are resolved to combat and overcome them all.

  1. I appreciate your support and collaboration in previous years, and look forward to same in 2019, and beyond, as I hope you will renew the mandate you overwhelmingly gave us in 2015, for another term.

  1. We are motivated by nothing other than service to motherland, and service without selfishness or personal interest.

  1. I can assure you all that we are making steady and sustainable progress in all areas of national life. Those who are unbiased can see and appreciate the progress the country has made since 2015.

  1. A New Year provides opportunity for renewal of commitment, and I invite you to rededicate yourselves to the vision of a Nigeria that works for all.

  1. We are moving from potentials to actualization, and it’s a task to be accomplished by us all; man, woman, young, old, military, civilian, all Nigerians. Please come along, as we journey to the land of our dreams. Happy 2019.

  1. Thank you and God Bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

State Governors say they cannot afford to pay N30,000 minimum wage

<p class="">The spokesman of the Governors’ Forum, said due to financial constraints and other limitations, many states could not afford it for now.</p>

<h1>The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) said that the governors would have loved to pay workers N30,000 as national minimum wage but for the hard times.</h1>

<p class=""><strong>Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo,</strong> spokesman of the NGF, said this on Monday in Abuja.</p>

<p class="">The head of the media of the Forum said that due to financial constraints and other limitations, many states could not afford it for now.</p>

<p class="">He said that the clarification was important, following insinuation by the <strong>Nigeria Labor Congress (NLC) </strong>through an interview granted by its Secretary General, <strong>Peter Eson.</strong></p>

<p class="">Bello-Barkindo said that the insinuation by Eson in the interview  that governors were refusing to pay the N30.000 national minimum wage as demanded was misleading.</p>

<p class="">Bello-Barkindo said that the governors had offered workers a token increment of N22,500 from the current N18000, after the submission of the report of the Tripartite Committee on Oct 6.</p>

<p class="">He also.said that the N22,500 was arrived at after extensive deliberations among all 36 governors.</p>

<p class="">He said the governors.also arrived at the decision after outlining their financial capacities and liquidity, considering the economic situation of the country and the states’ other obligations.</p>

<p class=""><em>“Governors also emphasised that N22,500 is a “baseline threshold, meaning that any governor who can pay more than N22.500 is therefore free to go ahead and do so."</em></p>

<p class="">He said that the governors had met the President Muhammadu Buhari twice on the matter and presented their books to buttress their point.</p>

<p class="">He said the governors, in their first batch meeting, presented the financial standing of six states, where each governor from the six geo-political regions in the country, was shown to the President on the President’s request.</p>

<p class=""><em>“All the states forwarded their books, their revenues, both internally generated and their earnings from the Federation Account along with their other sources of revenue for examination.</em></p>

<p class=""><em>“The president appeared satisfied with the governors’ position, thus the decision to set up a new committee.’’</em></p>

<p class="">Bello-Barkindo  added that there had never been a time in the country, when states had embarked on a more aggressive revenue drive than they were doing today. </p>

<p class="">He also said that though the governors were not under any obligation, by law, to show their books to the NLC but they had at several times done so in their pursuit of the understanding of the union.</p>

<p class="">Bello-Barkindo said that was done with a view to letting NLC know that what it was asking for is neither realistic nor sustainable, adding that yet, NLC remained adamant.</p>

<p class="">Bello-Barkindo said that since the last meeting, mid December between the Governors and Mr President, economists of the NGF had been working closely with the relevant departments in all the states of the federation.</p>

<p class="">He said that this was also in addition to looking into other ways of collating financial standing of states that would help the President in ameliorating the situation.</p>

<p class=""><em>“Already, revenue to states have dropped drastically while demands by competing needs keep rising astronomically.</em></p>

<p class=""><em>“Last year alone, revenue to states dropped from N800 billion when the Tripartite Committee was appointed (November 2017) to between N500bbillion and N600 billion.by the time Ms. Amma Pepple submitted its report in October 2018.</em></p>

<p class=""><em>“Moreover, state governors are making concerted efforts to improve on.education, health and infrastructure and for this, would not therefore dedicate their states’ entire resources to workers’ salaries alone."</em></p>

<p class="">According to him, workers constitute less than 5 per cent of the nation’s population.</p>

<p class=""><em>“In that regard, governors emphatically announced, collectively, that no state would devote more than 50 per cent of its revenue to salaries.</em></p>

<p class=""><em>“To therefore insist that states must oblige the NLC its demands, regardless of the economic gloom that stares the nation in the face is a deliberate attempt to hold the nation, especially the president, to ransom, this being an election year.’’</em></p>

<p class="">He said that most governors exhibited high sense of responsibility and concern for the plight of workers by ensuring that most of them were paid their December salaries ahead of time.</p>

<p class="">ALSO READ: </p>

<p class="">Bello-Barkindo said that some even received several months of salary arrears, adding that they were happy with their governors.’</p>

<p class="">He advised NLC not to destroy existing cordial relationship between the workers and their governors, especially where in.some states governors were stepping efforts to improve on the welfare of their workers.</p>
