How PENGASSAN Workers Reacted To Francis Johnson’s Death

Activities at the Lagos headquarters of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) came to a halt on Friday when the death of the association’s president, Mr Francis Johnson, was announced.

According to NAN, scores of workers at the union’s office wore gloomy faces, an indication that they were devastated by the development.

The workers declined to talk on the life and times of Johnson, saying that the union had already issued a statement on the death.

They, however, described the unionist, who hailed from the Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, as hard working.

No fewer than 30 union leaders from various affiliates of the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria had signed the condolence register opened at about 9am.

A statement earlier issued by Mr Frank Esanubi and Mr Lumumba Okugbawa, Deputy President and General Secretary, respectively said that Johnson died in the early hours of Friday in Abuja.

Ijaws Want A Probe Of Proposed Gelegele Seaport

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the call was made in a statement signed by the president of the Olodiama Youth Council, Mr Tari Opobunu, which was released in Benin on Wednesday.

The statement said that the project was ill-conceived, designed to fail from the onset, and also meant to disparage the Ijaw community of Gelegele, in the Ovia North East Local Government Area of the state.

It noted that although the Gelegele Community had earlier given their support for the proposed seaport, unfolding events have caused the people to realise that the project was just being used as a conduit pipe to siphon tax payers’ money.

The community also alleged that the state government was using the project to cause a crisis between the Ä°jaws in Edo and the Bini people.

The statement noted that without any consultation with the Gelegele community, the government changed the name of the proposed port from Gelegele seaport to the Benin River Port, because of its sinister motive.

“We wish to inform Edo people that the Ijaws, in general, and the people of Gelegele, in particular, have given all necessary support that any responsible and result-oriented government will need to actualise any people-oriented project, as it relates to the development of the Gelegele seaport.

“It will also interest the public to know that as we speak today, there is nothing visible that is ongoing at Gelegele, as regards the seaport project.

“Though we have always been skeptical towards the foot dragging of the state government, we got wind of the change of name from Gelegele Seaport to the Benin River Seaport, without any form of consultation whatsoever.

“We consider this as an affront to us as a people and a calculated attempt to undermine our integrity. We, therefore, call on the Edo House of Assembly, the EFCC, the ICPC and most especially, the National Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), to investigate all issues relating to the gelegele seaport project.’’

Meanwhile, the Edo Government has, however, allayed the fears of the people of Gelegele on the Seaport Project.

Mr Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, to the Edo Governor, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin on Friday that the project was being executed in stages.

He explained that although he had no specific details on the project costs and its mode of financing, the project was being implemented in stages.

Osagie also said that the name of the Port should not be an issue, “but what should ultimately be of concern to the people should be the completion of the project.

“Every single transaction that the state government is going to do about the project is being implemented in stages, at the moment.
“What is being done at the moment are the regulatory aspects of the project which basically concern its framework.

“After this, we will move to the next stage of the project which is the drawing down of the actual project and, thereafter, the physical implementation aspect.

“İn any case, when the state government announced this project, it  did not say it was going to be completed under a single term. These are transactions that can take five to six years to be completed.

“İt is into the second term that some of these projects will actually take shape; it will even transcend the life of this administration. For instance, the Azura Power Plant was conceptualised under the Gov. Oshiomhole’s administration but it was not fulfilled under him.

“When change is coming, it brings some level of apprehension, some of these concerns are unnecessary. Whatever name the Port is called, the location remains the same and the people of that location ultimately will be the first beneficiaries of the project,’’ he said.

Ecobank To Challenge Judgment In Honeywell Case On Appeal

Ecobank

Ecobank Nigeria Ltd on Friday vowed to appeal the Lagos Federal High Court judgment in which the court held that Honeywell Group was not indebted to the bank.

The bank’s lawyer Kunle Ogunba (SAN) said he would consult with his client with a view to filing the appeal after further reviewing the judgment.

“Of course we do not agree with the judgment because the plaintiffs are still indebted to my client.

“We’ll definitely challenge the judgment on appeal, Ogunba said when contacted by newsmen.

Justice Ayokunle Faji declared that Honeywell Flour Mills Plc and its sister companies were not indebted to Ecobank Nigeria.

The judge made the declaration on Friday while delivering judgment in a suit filed by Honeywell against Ecobank.

Honeywell and its sister companies had, in their suit, sought the court’s declaration that they do now owe Ecobank, contrary to the bank’s claim they were indebted to the bank to the tune of N5.5billion.

The companies urged the court to hold that having made a full and final payment of N3.5billion as agreed at a July 22, 2013 meeting, they were no longer indebted to the bank.

But the bank insisted that in paying the N3.5billion, the firms did not comply with the terms of agreement.

It contended that the firms breached the agreement that the money would be paid before the end of August 2013 when examiners from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who were in the bank to examine its books, would leave.

But the firms contended that the bank failed to tell it when exactly the CBN examiners were to leave, adding that it made the final payment on December 12, 2013.

In his judgment on Friday, Justice Faji ruled in favour of Honeywell and its sister companies, holding that they were no longer indebted to the bank.

The judge also awarded a cost of N250, 000 against the bank in favour of Honeywell and its sister companies.

Man, 34, Docked For Allegedly Defiling 15-Year-Old Neighbour’s Daughter

An Ikeja Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday ordered the remand in prison custody of a 34-year-old businessman, Charles Okpara, for allegedly defiling his 15-year-old neighbour’s daughter.
Chief Magistrate Olufunke Sule-Amzat, who did not take the plea of the defendant, ordered that he be remanded in Kirikiri Prison.
Sule-Amzat urged the police to send the case file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.
The magistrate adjourned the case until August 5 for further hearing.
The defendant, who lives at Ebun Close, Casso in Alagbado area of Lagos, was charged with defilement.
Earlier, the Prosecutor, ASP Benson Emuerhi, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 12, at 9.30 p.m., at his residence.

Zamfara: Timi Frank chides Sagay over comments on Supreme Court judgment

Zamfara: Timi Frank chides Sagay over comments on Supreme Court judgment

A chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Comrade Timi Frank, has cautioned the Chairman of the  Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) and Professor of Law, Mr. Itse Sagay (SAN) to refrain from casting aspersions on the integrity of the judiciary.
Professor Sagay in his reaction to the judgment of the Supreme  Court on Zamfara and Rivers state dismissed the judicial pronouncements as travesty of justice and urged the APC’s legal team to apply to the Supreme Court for a review of its judgement.
In Rivers, the APC was excluded from fielding candidates during the general elections following a Supreme Court’s ruling.
On Zamfara the apex court  last Friday  upheld the decision of the Sokoto Division of the Court of Appeal to the effect that the APC did not conduct any valid primary election and as such had no candidate for any of the elections in the state .
Justice Paul Galinjee who read the lead judgment dismissed  the votes scored  by the APC candidates in the elections as wasted, and further submitted  that the party and the candidates with the second highest votes and the spread in the various elections were the valid winners.
The judgment centres on the governorship, state House of Assembly and the National Assembly elections conducted in Zamfara State on February 23 and March 11 , 2019.
Frank in a statement warned that if Sagay was not urgently called to order by  the Federal Government his statement was capable of negatively overheating the polity and rubbish the apex court in the land and by extension, the judiciary.
He said: “At his age and level of experience, Sagay should learn to  stand by the truth instead of twisting the law for selfish ends. Sagay cannot claim to be more learned  or more patriotic than the Justices of the Supreme Court. Therefore, asking the apex court to attempt to reverse itself is to court chaos.
“The Supreme Court has ruled fairly and justly concerning Zamfara and Rivers state; and the judgment made Nigerians proud and hopeful that there is still hope for the nation’s democracy despite the shenanigans we saw in the last general elections.
“The Supreme Court has demonstrated once again that the Judiciary  is truly the last hope of the common man. Sagay’s position on issues concerning the aforementioned cases is irrelevant being an APC chieftain. So, if he does not like the judgements, let him appeal to God.”
According to the activist, “whenever a court’s judgement is not in favour of the APC, it is miscarriage of justice but when it favours APC – even if  unconstitutional means were used to procure it –  it is a true justice.”

Governorship Slot: Group Makes Case For Kogi West

Lokoja – Ahead of November 16, 2019 governorship election in Kogi state, a group under the aegis of Citizens for Equity, Fairness and Justice has challenged other Senatorial zones of the state to allow Western Senatorial District  to produce the  next governor of the state.

In a press conference held on Friday in Lokoja, the Spokesman for the group Mohammed Abubakar appealed to Kogi East and Central zones as a matter of equity and fairness to support the candidates from the west for the plum governorship seat in the forthcoming election.

He noted that, Kogi East has produced governors for almost 16 years while the central senatorial district is having its turn of four years leaving the West as an orphan in the state it called her own.

He explained that Kogi is a miniature Nigeria where political consideration is divided among three zones – North, West and South-South while Kogi has East, Central and west saying there should be an adoptable modality for all the zones to have a shot at the governorship of the state.

Abubakar lamented that Kogi Western Senatorial zone is the only  zone across the country that has not produced a governor of her own since 1999 that our nascent democracy experimented.

He added that if not because  the larger Nigeria  introduced Zoning in its body polity, smaller  ethnic tribes  and Zones wouldn’t have been able to produce the presidents urging the political leadership of the state to without delay enshrine rotational arrangement in her polity.

The spokesman averred that the major criteria for the people aspiring to the office of the governor should be competence and not on the basis of population stressed that the Western Zone has in abundance men and women of high capacity and the credibility that can drive the state from its present underdevelopment.

He urged politicians to always consider all parts of the state as their place of birth nothing that Kogi west has contributed immensely to the development and sustenance of the state that should be considered to occupy  the office of the governor

According to him, ” Under our Constitution, Marginalisation of any kind is illegal and immoral under God. The kind of people we are, our principles and our values should be determined by our adherence to fairness, equity and Justice.

” We cannot promote Unity, tolerance, peace, brotherhood and nationhood without enforcing these principles of equity, Fairness, and Justice. We should be conscious that we are equal before the law, hence, we urged our brothers from the other zones to allow Western Senatorial zone to produce the next governor” He pleaded.

Speakership: You’re Good Neighbours, Former Imo Speaker Tells Yorubas

The former Imo House of Assembly Speaker, Amaechi Nwoha, says the Yoruba Youth Movement (YYM) are not only agents of national cohesion and unity but good neighbours to the South-East.
Nwoha said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Abuja while reacting to the Group’s endorsement of Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba for Speaker.
Nwoha, who is also the director for Contact and Mobilisation, South-East Equity Alliance (SEA), said that such gesture was key to indivisible Nigeria, promising that they were ready to extend hands of fellowship.
He said that their endorsement of Nwajiuba and South-East for the Speakership was in tune with the federal character principle and natural justice.

“We from the South East shall not hesitate to extend our hands of fellowship to these our brothers.

“They stand for truth and equity in a nation of diversity like Nigeria and such must be commended, Nwoha said.
The former Speaker described Nwajiuba as a gentleman with bold heart and legislative experience to advance the unity of Nigeria.
He commended YYK for the courage to speak the truth aimed at balancing political power equation.
According to him, truth is an open wound that only conscience can heal.
He said that the South-East would continue to partner with neighbours in making Nwajiuba Speakership realisable.

Lekki Residents Urge FG to Tackle Flood

The Lekki Estate Residents and Stakeholders Association (LERSA), on Friday called for concerted efforts by the Federal Government and stakeholders  to address regular flooding in the locality during the rainy season.

The President of LERSA, Olorogun James Emadoye, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on the need to tackle immobility, loss of lives and property caused by flooding in the area.

Emadoye urged the government to utilise the ecological funds to provide help for Lekki and its occupants before population explosion and the flooding got worse.

“The addressing threat of flood and the resultant effects is the beginning of wisdom if you live around this axis.

“The region has become one of the most populated areas of Lagos due to the influx of businesses, the ongoing refinery, new airport and deep sea ports, we need to be able to account for lives and property.

“If you recall, three years ago, we had a situation and before it gets to that stage again.

“We are appealing that the government should do something for Lagos out of the ecological funds because the challenge is really staring us in the face.

Emadoye implored the government to invest more in the development of the coastal roads and railways to minimise usage of the single Lekki-Epe expressway.

He further advised that instead of the continuous tolling of the Lekki Epe Expressway, a new coastal road should be built and tolled.

“Road transportation alone cannot serve Lagos and the nation at large.

“The road carries all sorts of heavy machineries and loads, as a result cannot last the duration for which it was built.

“With rail, a single train will be able to lift about a 1000 at a time and so the road becomes less burdensome.

“Also, rather than tolling this road which was built by the Alhaji Lateef Jakande administration, a new coastal road should be built and tolled instead, he said.

Emadoye urged residents to look out for each other by calling the attention of the association and emergency services to blocked drainage along their residences.

“We must all be responsible, responsive and committed to the environment and to one another.

“Everybody must contribute to ensure we avert major disaster in this area now that the rains are here.

“LERSA has already set up an environment committee to tackle major problems as the need arises, he said.

Emadoye commended the Lagos State government for its prompt response to emergency situations within their limits and resources available.

He reiterated the association’s commitment to partnering with the Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in achieving its goals at making Lekki and Lagos the mega city as planned. (NAN)

U-20: Flying Eagles Winger Makanjuola Targets Trophy Not Individual Award

Flying Eagles winger Success Makanjuola has said he is not carried away by his winning the Man of the match award in the team’s impressive 1-1 draw against Ukraine on Thursday at ongoing FIFA Under-20 World Cup in Poland.

The Flying Eagles put up an improved performance in their crucial last group game against Ukraine to ensure they qualified for the knock out phase with Makanjuola enjoying his first start in the team’s line-up.

Makanjuola who plies his trade with Water FC of Abuja before his invitation to the Flying Eagles, however, did not disappoint as he provided the assist for Tijani Muhammed with a well taken cross that led to the equalizing penalty.

Tijani eventually found the back of the net having missed a similar penalty in the first half.

A statement from the team’s camp in Poland on Friday, quoted Makanjuola as saying “I am really not too bothered about individual accolade for now.

“I am concerned about helping the team to do well and am happy that the entire team put up a good fight and we achieved our goal which is making it to the knock out round.

“The knock out round is a different level all together, and so our focus now is to prepare well to make Nigerians happy because we know they were not happy when we lost to the U.S.

“We are not even thinking of the team we will play in the next round, we just want to be at our best when the match comes and the coaches are working hard to get us in perfect shape for the next round, he said.

The fast rising winger was in the heart of the team’s overall display against the Ukrainians with his constant deadly corner kicks, crosses and dribbling for the entire 87 minutes he was on the pitch.

Meanwhile, President of Elite football club of Abuja Taiwo Bankole has urged Coach Paul Aigbogun to stick to the starting eleven he used in the game against Ukraine.

“I strongly think the starting eleven against Ukraine is a better side compared to the starting eleven we had against the U.S.

“The coming in of the Akwa United player Okon in the midfield and Makanjuola in the attack gave the team more creativity and bite upfront.

“I think the team can still go far in the tournament if the coach gets his formation and tactics right, Bankole said.
