Lagos – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC)Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Ogun State Sector Command, in a report made available to Daily Independent, has commenced the 2019 EID-EL FITR Special Patrol Operations from Friday 31 May to Sunday 09 June 2019.
The Special Patrol Operations will focus on, Excessive Speed; Dangerous Driving; Wrongful Overtaking; Lane Indiscipline; Use of Phone while Driving; Seat Belt Violation; Overloading Violation; Tyre Violation (expired/ substandard) as well as Speed Limiting Devise Violation and Passenger’s Manifest Violation by commercial vehicles.
A total of one thousand five hundred (1,500) personnel comprising Regular and Special Marshals have been deployed to oversee traffic activities on the highways in Ogun State especially along the Expressways of Lagos – Ibadan; Sagamu – Ijebu-Ode; Abeokuta – Sagamu; and Abeokuta – Ifo – Sango – Ota – Lagos Expressways. Other corridors being focused are the Abeokuta – Ibadan and Ota – Idiroko International Corridors.
The under listed Operational Equipment have been provided to ensure the desired impact on the entire stretch of highways in Ogun State. 25 patrol vehicles, 3 life – support Ambulances, 3 patrol motorbikes, 1 heavy duty tow Truck.
Traffic Control Areas by FRSC personnel have been set up to ensure easy interventions to traffic distress from the boundaries of Ogun State with neighbouring States of Lagos, Oyo and Ondo States. Traffic Control Areas have also been established at Mowe, Sagamu, Ogere, Ogunmakin, IJebu – Ode, Ifo, Ota and Abeokuta.
In addition, all the FRSC’s Road Side Emergency Clinics and Ambulances Points at ITORI; SAGAMU; IJEBU ODE and OGUNMAKIN will operate 24 hours Rescue Operations throughout the duration of the Special Patrol.
The Command has also embarked on aggressive Public Enlightenment Campaigns at the various Motor Parks and Religious Institutions across the State.
Motorists travelling during this period to celebrate with their loved ones are advised to be extra careful while travelling and should pay special attention to Construction Areas where overtaking is prohibited and maximum speed is pegged at 50km per hour.
It is important to particularly note construction zones where traffic is diverted especially at the 5km stretch of road between Fidiwo ( around OgunMakin /Alapako ) and Ogere , as well as the 5km stretch of road between Car Park C at Mowe and Oremeji up to Kara / Ibafo, which are all situated on the ever busy Lagos – Ibadan Expressway.
Equally of note is IYANA ILOGBO/ OWODE along the Abeokuta – Ota – Lagos Corridor, currently undergoing rehabilitation with traffic also diverted within that area.
The FRSC frowns at any motorist travelling at speed beyond 50km per hour or overtaking at designated construction zones, as these construction zones, where traffic are diverted, albeit their very short distances, have been responsible for about half of the road traffic deaths in Ogun State this year.
Accordingly, motorists arrested for contravening construction zones regulations during this period may be impounded until after the yuletide.
The FRSC Ogun State Sector Commander, Clement Oladele, appealed to motorists to demonstrate the reason of this season by showing love to fellow road users by obeying traffic rules, to arrive home safely, and celebrate with their loved ones. He has therefore warned that any motorist apprehended flouting traffic rules, especially construction zones violations, would be treated as driving dangerously and risk being issued ticket for fifty thousand (N50,000) naira fines or outrightly prosecuted.
