On July 4, Japan banned the sale to South Korea of the three materials used in semiconductors and displays of electronic devices, a measure that, according to Seoul, is a reprisal for sanctions on Japanese companies to compensate South Korean victims of forced labor during the Second World War.
Officials from both Asian countries met yesterday in Tokyo but they failed to reach an agreement to resolve the trade dispute.
According to the Japanese government, South Korean controls are too lax and some of these materials are sent to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), a country that could use them to manufacture weapons.
This commercial conflict is part of the constant friction between Japan and South Korea in recent months due to issues related to the Japanese colonization of the Korean peninsula from 1910 to 1945.
