PGA Nigeria At 50: Professionals In Final Showdown For N20m

The professional event at the ongoing PGA Nigeria @50 anniversary tournament holding at the Ibom Golf Club, Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, will end today Friday August 23, 2019.

This will be happening after only 55 professionals made the cut, just as the senior professionals were also pruned down to 20.

The weeklong event, which has N20 million-prize money teed off the professional competition on Tuesday, August 20 with over 115 regular professionals and 30 senior professionals.

Remi Johnson, Director of Seventh Sport International and marketers of PGA of Nigeria, told DAILY INDEPENDENT on Wednesday that N20 million prize money would be shared between the regular professionals and the senior professionals.

“N20 million is the prize money for this tournament. N16 million is for the regular professionals and N4 million is for the senior professionals.

“The winner for the regular professionals will pocket N1.7 million; second position N1.3 million and third position gets N1 million.

“But others will definitely get something good and the last person will take home N200, 000 plus.

“The same thing is applicable to the senior professionals. First position will grab N750, 000 and the last player will get nothing less than N200, 000. So, it is a win, win situation and not winner takes it all,” the director explained.

Speaking further, he, however, expressed expectation that golf fans might witness a new hero at the end of the day if the intensity of the competition among the players was anything to go by.

“This tournament is very interesting and I’m afraid there maybe a new hero this time around and not the regular winners because the competition among the players is something to cherish.

“One cannot guess where the pendulum will swing. That’s what makes tournaments great and stiff, especially when the stake is high,” she said.

As at the time of filing this report on Thursday evening, Andrew Oche Odoh took over lead on -4 from over night leader, Amos Korblah of Ghana who shot +2.

Meanwhile, the amateur competition will wrap up the anniversary on Saturday and Sunday; it will feature men and women on Saturday and sponsors on Sunday.

Dignitaries expected at the occasion include the host state governor, Udom Emmanuel; Godwin Obaseki of Edo State; Simon Lalung of Plateau State; Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State and one of the bastions of golf in Nigeria, Alfred Diete-Spiff.
