In Kwara: Police arrest ex-soldier for robbing minister

The former army sergeant was arrested with four other suspects.

The Kwara State Police Command has arrested a former soldier of the Nigerian Army for allegedly attacking the home of the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Prof. Claudius Daramola.

The former army sergeant, Solomon Abel, was paraded, alongside four other suspects, on Thursday, November 23, 2017 by the state's Commissioner of Police, Mr. Lawan Ado.

The other suspects paraded are Dedeigbo Olabiyi, Raymond Anyam, Sunday Shakede and Kingsley Chijoke.

The suspects had allegedly attacked Daramola's residence at the Tanke area of Ilorin on Tuesday, November 21, at about 5:45am.

The commissioner said after the police command was tipped off about the attack, operatives of the Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad and Safer Highway teams were alerted and directed to block all the entry and exit routes to Ilorin.

The suspects were arrested when a green LandRover vehicle, with number plate IWA-01, was flagged down along Ajase-Ipo Road by policemen.

He said, "On interrogation, it was discovered that the occupants were robbers that attacked the minister's house in the Tanke area. The five suspects, who include a military man, were members of an inter-state armed robbery gang. They confessed to have come from Abuja to carry out the robbery operation."

The commissioner also disclosed that the suspects will soon be charged to court.

Stoke City Join Race To Sign Ighalo

Premier League side Stoke City have shown interest to sign Super Eagles striker, Odion Ighalo, from Chinese Super League club Changchun Yatai, Completesportsnigeria.com report’s.

Ighalo was part of the Watford side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2015 – then scored 15 goals in his Premier League debut season in the 2015/2016 league campaign.

But the following season, Ighalo struggled to replicate his form in the previous campaign, scoring once in 17 games before joining CSL club Changchun Yatai on January 31, 2017.

According to Stoke Sentinel, Stoke City have joined the likes of Southampton, Everton and West Ham in showing interest to sign Ighalo following his impressive performance for Changchun where he scored 15 goals in 27 league appearances in the just concluded season.

Crystal Palace and West Brom were interested in signing him last season, but were put off by the Watford’s huge financial demands.

Ighalo is currently in Nigeria getting set to launch his new orphanage home with the date on December 16 in Ijegun, Lagos.

The former Granada striker played a key role in helping the Super Eagles qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

He however missed the Eagles’ last match in the 2018 World Cup African qualifying Group B against Algeria which ended 1-1 due to injury. He was also absent when Nigeria beat Argentina 4-2 in an international friendly Match on November 14.

Atiku Abubakar: APC is a dying party – Ex-VP says

The ex-VP said this in a statement which he released to newsmen on Friday, November 24, 2017.

Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice-President of Nigeria, has described the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a dying party.

The ex-VP also said that the ruling party has failed the youths of Nigeria.

He said “How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth.

“A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people.”

The former VP said this in a statement which he released to newsmen on Friday, November 24, 2017.

Atiku, in his letter, also declared that he is leaving the ruling APC.

The ex-VP also accused the APC of clamping down on all forms of democracy within the party and the government.

Atiku also said that the APC has failed Nigerians, adding that the party is making the same mistake PDP made.

He said “While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalization, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.

“Only last year, a governor produced by the party wrote a secret memorandum to the president which ended up being leaked. In that memo, he admitted that the All Progressives Congress had ‘not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight ‘change’ but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance’.

“Of the party itself, that same governor said ‘Mr. President, Sir Your relationship with the national leadership of the party, both the formal (NWC) and informal (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso), and former Governors of ANPP, PDP (that joined us) and ACN, is perceived by most observers to be at best frosty. Many of them are aggrieved due to what they consider total absence of consultations with them on your part and those you have assigned such duties.

A South African appeals court increased paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius’ sentence for murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp to 13 years and five months on Friday.

The Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein more than doubled his original sentence of six years after the state appealed that it was unduly lenient.

Prosecutors argued earlier this month that Oscar Pistorius failed to show genuine remorse after killing his girlfriend.

“One of the essential ingredients of a balanced sentence is that it must reflect the seriousness of the offence,” Andrea Johnson, of the National Prosecution Authority, told the court.

The Paralympic athlete shot dead Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day in 2013 when he fired four times through the door of his bedroom toilet.

He pleaded not guilty at his trial in 2014 and has always denied that he killed Steenkamp in a rage, saying he mistook her for a burglar.

News reaching LEADERSHIP has it that Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and chieftain of the ruling All Progressives Congress APC has resigned from the party.

This was revealed in a tweet by Abubakar’s aide, Mr Paul Ibe this morning.

“H.E. @atiku has resigned from the All Progressives Congress,” the tweet read.

LEADERSHIP recall that Atiku Abubakar contested against President Muhammadu Buhari alongside three others for the ticket of the APC in 2014.

He lost out in the primary but collapsed his structure to support the president at the 2015 presidential campaign.

Atiku was the Vice to former President Olusegun Obasanjo when Nigeria returned to democracy in 1999.

Shettima calls for proactive measures to check food insecurity in North-East

Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno has called for proactive measures to mitigate the effects of food insecurity caused by Boko Haram insurgency in the North-East.

Shettima made the call while fielding questions from newsmen at the inauguration of farm inputs distribution organised by Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on Thursday in Maiduguri.

He said such measures were imperative to control the situation during the anticipated lean season between June and July.

He added that ” when we recorded food insecurity challenge in the past, we complained to President Muhammad Buhari. And to be sincere, the president responded positively toward addressing the food and humanitarian crisis in the region.

“The president ordered the release of food from the strategic reserve, and with support of the United Nations and donor agencies, we are able to control the situation.

“But the problem still persists, as farmers could not go to the farm and they want to go back home, to enable them to cultivate their farmlands.

“Practical measures are necessary to support farmers before the commencement of the next cropping season.”

Shettima said his administration had procured 2,000 tractors, 50 combined harvesters, drift sprinklers, drift irrigation and a host of modern farming tools.

He explained that the equipment would be distributed to farmers as soon as normalcy returned to communities.

“It is a deliberate attempt to support farmers and encourage agricultural activities in the state”.

The governor commended FAO over its food and agriculture intervention programme in the state.

Shettima noted that the programme had mitigated nutrition and food shortage, as well as encouraged agricultural activities.

He added that the programme also provided livelihood to displaced farmers, which enabled them to grow crops and generate income to take care of their needs.

FAO had started distributing fertilisers, seeds, water pumps and chemicals to about 270,000 farmers in 16 local government areas of Borno, to enable them to engage in rice and vegetable production.

The organisation planned to distribute farm inputs to 700,000 farmers in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe for the 2017/2018 dry season.

FAO had also distributed inputs to over one million displaced farmers during the past cropping season in the affected states.

Atiku Abubakar: Ex-VP dumps APC

Ex-vice president, Atiku Abubakar said the APC has failed Nigerians.

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar has dumped the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement personally signed by him on Friday, November 24, 2017, Atiku accused the APC of “instituting a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy” within the party and the government it produced.

Atiku decried APC's neglect of the youths by the Muhammadu Buhari-led government.

The statement reads in full:

"On the 19th of December, 2013, I received members of the All Progressives Congress at my house in Abuja. They had come to appeal to me to join their party after my party, the Peoples Democratic Party, had become factionalized as a result of the special convention of August 31, 2013. 

"The fractionalization of the Peoples Democratic Party on August 31, 2013 had left me in a situation where I was, with several other loyal party members, in limbo, not knowing which of the parallel executives of the party was the legitimate leadership.

"It was under this cloud that members of the APC made the appeal to me to join their party, with the promise that the injustices and failure to abide by its own constitution which had dogged the then PDP, would not be replicated in the APC and with the assurance that the vision other founding fathers and I had for the PDP could be actualized through the All Progressives Congress.

"It was on the basis of this invitation and the assurances made to me that I, being party-less at that time, due to the fractionalization of my party, accepted on February 2, 2014, the hand of fellowship given to me by the All Progressives Congress. 

"On that day, I said "it is the struggle for democracy and constitutionalism and service to my country and my people that are driving my choice and my decision" to accept the invitation to join the All Progressives Congress.

"Like you, I said that because I believed that we had finally seen the beginnings of the rebirth of the new Nigeria of our dreams which would work for all of us, old and young. 

"However, events of the intervening years have shown that like any other human and like many other Nigerians, I was fallible. 

"While other parties have purged themselves of the arbitrariness and unconstitutionality that led to fractionalization, the All Progressives Congress has adopted those same practices and even gone beyond them to institute a regime of a draconian clampdown on all forms of democracy within the party and the government it produced.

"Only last year, a governor produced by the party wrote a secret memorandum to the president which ended up being leaked. In that memo,  he admitted that the All Progressives Congress had "not only failed to manage expectations of a populace that expected overnight ‘change’ but has failed to deliver even mundane matters of governance".

"Of the party itself, that same governor said 'Mr. President, Sir Your relationship with the national leadership of the party, both the formal (NWC) and informal (Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso), and former Governors of ANPP, PDP (that joined us) and ACN, is perceived by most observers to be at best frosty. Many of them are aggrieved due to what they consider total absence of consultations with them on your part and those you have assigned such duties.'

"But more importantly, the party we put in place has failed and continues to fail our people, especially our young people. How can we have a federal cabinet without even one single youth. 

"A party that does not take the youth into account is a dying party. The future belongs to young people.

"I admit that I and others who accepted the invitation to join the APC were eager to make positive changes for our country that we fell for a mirage. Can you blame us for wanting to put a speedy end to the sufferings of the masses of our people?

"Be that as it may be, after due consultation with my God, my family, my supporters and the Nigerian people whom I meet in all walks of life, I, Atiku Abubakar, Waziri Adamawa, hereby tender my resignation from the All Progressives Congress while I take time to ponder my future."

Life is beautiful and it’s the most important thing to every mortal. Nothing in this world makes any meaning or matter if there is no life. The dead cannot complain or murmur so where there is life, there is hope. To live is to hope and to hope is to live.

Life brings with it hope for opportunities that will activate our faith for a tomorrow. Life is simple but yet complex, filled with ups and downs, forward and backward movements. It presents us with choices; the choice to take a left or to take a right is solely dependent on us which can be influenced by our circumstances.

The choice to speak up or to keep silent, the choice to be right or be wrong, do good or do evil, move up or move down, the choice to give or to withhold, speak the truth or speak a lie, to love or to hate, to ignore or to acknowledge, to live or to perish…so yes we have choices in life and we are accountable for our choices.

Life as a gift

Life is a precious gift from God/universe and just like most precious gifts; it is expected of you to appreciate it and reverence the giver. Unlike human gifting, this particular gift comes with terms and conditions and that is why finding your purpose in life is relevant.

You wake up every day feeling thankful and hoping for the best. Where hope is in place, a better tomorrow is certain. Appreciate the people around you whom God has used in one way or the other to bless your life no matter how little they contribute to your life.

Life is a gift but you do not have power over it and you cannot make a claim on it; it is a gift but the universe can recall it at any time. It is specially wrapped with your name on it but comes with an expiry date. It is gifted to you but with an expectation from the giver, so it is your duty to find out what this expectation is as this will enable you make the most it before it expires. Every day you live, means there is an expectation still pending.

Live and be happy

Live life and do not let life live you. For every time you wake up, there is always a reason why the universe has allowed you to. Reassure yourself that whatever it is you are going through at the moment will always pass; as life has an expiry date so does every problem.   Someone said that ‘suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem’ and I totally agree.

If you hold on to hope, you will someday refer to that problem in a past tense. Do not give up. A life of gratitude is a life of happiness. It helps for a smoother journey through life. Thank the universe for the little things and it will always take care of the bigger things for you. Sometimes the hurdles we encounter in life make us stronger and give us a much impactful storyline for others who would one day look up to us.

Try and find happiness in little things of life and it will attract to you things worth celebrating. To be happy is not given, it’s a choice you make and it comes from within you. Every day, we can encounter so many things that will attempt to take joy away from us but every day, we can also make that decision to be happy regardless of. Don’t forget, lemonades are made with lemons.

Life has an expiry date so live it wisely. Always remember you’ve only got this one shot at it; you don’t need bitterness, envy, backbiting, hatred, anger, fear to ruin it for you. Life is full of lessons; ensure to learn as you go.

Nigeria international Victor Moses is delighted to see Chelsea secure a place in the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The English Premier League champions thrashed Arzebaijani club Qarabag 4-0 at the Olympic Stadium, Baku on Wednesday night.

Moses missed out of the game as he is still recuperating from the hamstring injury he suffered against Crystal Palace in October.

Zimbabwe’s former president Robert Mugabe was granted immunity from prosecution, sources close to the negotiations said on Thursday.

According to the source, Mugabe was assured that his safety would be protected in his home country as part of a deal that led to his resignation.

Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for close to four decades but stepped down on Tuesday after the army seized power and the ruling party turned against him.

“For him it was very important that he be guaranteed security to stay in the country…although that will not stop him from traveling abroad when he wants to or has to,” the source said.

Short on time, but don't want to skip leg day? The curtsy lunge (some people call them “ice-skaters”) is a perfect move to help you build serious muscle in no time.

It’s a challenging move that takes as much coordination as it does strength, and it’s a good way to get in your leg workout quickly.

Now, we’re about to make the curtsy lunge a little bit harder. As Paige Hathaway, Global Ambassador at F45 Training, shows us in the video above, a simple hop can add all sorts of pain to a curtsy lunge.

“This is an F45 exercise, so I’m excited to show you guys it,” she says. “It targets the glutes and the hamstrings.”

You start with your typical curtsy lunge—feet shoulder-width apart, and lunging back diagonally. This move targets more muscles than your typical reverse lunge, and adds a bit of a coordination challenge as well.

But instead of coming back from the lunge into an upright position, Hathaway adds an extra challenge to the mix: a hop. “We’re going to add an element,” she says. Hopping on your front foot gives your other leg extra work.

It’s a plyometric motion that adds explosive power, burns more fat, and builds more muscle.

Hathaway recommends doing this move on 30 seconds for each leg. That’s a quick burn for someone who’s short on time—and loves to work their legs.
