2018 World Cup Draw: “Argentina again?” Two African nations in groups of death and more

by Alexander O. Onukwue

For the third consecutive tournament, Nigeria will play Argentina at the group stages of the 2018 World Cup Finals to be held in Russia next summer.

The draws held on December 1 at the Moscow State Kremlin revealed Nigeria will be in Group D with the two-time champions and runner-ups of the 2014 edition, and will be joined by Croatia and debutants Iceland.

Only at the 1998 Finals in France did Nigeria not meet Argentina at a World Cup. In the four tournaments since Nigeria’s first appearance at the global soccer fiesta in 1994, Nigeria has qualified from the Group stages on two occasions – ’94 and 2014 – but did not make it out of the group from an Argentina group in 2002 and 2010.

Given the number of times both nations have met, it could be argued that Nigeria should now understand better how to prepare for and prosecute a World Cup game against La Albiceleste. A recent 4 – 2 exhibition victory would inspire some confidence, even if that Argentine team was without its talisman, Lionel Messi.

Nigeria’s plan in qualifying from the Group next year could seek to imitate the plan from 2014. At the tournament in Brazil, the Super Eagles qualified as the second best from the Group which included Bosnia, and Iran after nicking a one-goal win over the former and playing out a goalless draw with the latter. However, the opposition in Russia will be considerably tougher as both Croatia and Iceland performed reasonably well in their qualifying games.

Iceland, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup, topped their group to make it to the finals, following up an impressive debut at Euro 2016 last year where they beat England at the quarter-final stage. Croatia who made their debut at the World Cup in 1998 finishing at third-place boasts A-list players in Europe such as the Real Madrid duo of Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic and Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic. They will be looking to bounce back from a poor outing in Brazil where there only win was a 4-0 rout of Cameroon.

Accessing the chances of other African countries, a look across the other groups drawn for the 2018 World Cup show that the continent’s best ranked team, Egypt, in a relatively easier group than the other four teams. Boasting the continent’s best player in Mohammed Salah and with the motivation of a first appearance at the global event in 28 years, they will have much confidence facing the main threat in Group A which will be Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani’s Uruguay. Morocco will have their work cut out against Cristiano Ronaldo and company, as well as 2010 World Champions Spain. North Africa’s third representative, Tunisia, will face England, Belgium and new boys Panama, while Sadio Mane’s Senegal will play Colombia and Japan, the two teams faced by Cote D’Ivoire at the 2014 finals.

A lot of football will come between now and when the hostilities are set to kick off in Moscow next year. But players around the world will now be watchful of their performances and be mindful about not picking up needless injuries. For Nigeria, attention will heighten on players who are performing best for their clubs. The quality of the opposition awaiting the Super Eagles next year should require that every single one of the 23 who eventually makes the plane would be there on form and fitness, ability and, to a lesser extent, contribution to the qualifying campaign.

Perhaps with the exception of Vincent Enyeama; knowing how well he has performed against Lionel Messi at the 2010 and 2014 meets, almost being singularly responsible for keeping the score margins at not more than one goal deficits, should he be recalled to the squad?

Naira appreciated by 30.3% against dollar in 10 months

The naira has appreciated by 30.3 per cent since February when the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) began its aggressive interventions at the foreign exchange market, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The Nigerian currency had exchanged at N520 to the dollar at the peak of onslaughts by currency speculators before the CBN stated intervening by injecting foreign exchange in the market.

The CBN injection of over 3.6 billion dollars to meet the demand for foreign exchange resulted in the convergence of rates at the parallel market and the Bureau De Change segments.

The apex bank’s intervention led to the current flattening of the rate at 362.5 to the dollar at the parallel market.

Prof Sheriffdeen Tella, a Senior Economist at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, Ogun, said that the CBN interventions were made possible by the increase in the price of oil at the international market.

Tella said that the crude oil production output of two million barrels per day also meant more money for the nation.

He, however, that the recent production cut by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) to 1.8 million barrels per day might affect the nation’s crude oil earnings.

He urged the CBN to continue to intervene at the official foreign exchange market market sustain the appreciation of the naira across board.

Benue To Establish SME Centre To Fast Track Development — Ortom

Benue Government is to establish small and medium-scale enterprises development agency to fast track skills acquisition among youths in the state, Gov. Samuel Ortom has said.

The governor disclosed this on Friday in Makurdi at the closing ceremony of the training of 500 graduands by the National Industrial Skills Development Programme (NISDP).

Ortom said it was his administration’s commitment to encourage skills acquisition and promote SMEs in the state that compelled him to send a bill for the establishment of the agency to the state assembly and which had passed second reading.

”It is my conviction that relevant industrial skills is a prerequisite to any society that wants to build a vibrant SMEs sub-sector.

”It is also in recognition of this model that I signed the second phase of NISDP in Abuja with the Director-General of ITF few days ago,” he said.

Artom expressed regret that the state was one of the states with the highest number of unemployed youths.

He said that harsh economic situation had made it impossible for his administration to carry out employment at the moment, hence the need to embrace skills acquisition.

Artom said that the graduands had chosen the right path to success and urged them to be foresighted, hardworking, diligent and committed to their chosen vocations.

Earlier, the state Commissioner for Industry, Trade and Investment, Prof. Tersoo Kpelai, had commended Ortom and described him as a pace setter for championing the training of youths on skills acquisitions to become self reliant.

Kpelai thanked Industrial Training Fund (ITF) for its partnership with the state government in the training of youths on skills acquisition in five different centres across the state.

He commended the trainees for their patience and endurance during the training and urged them to put to practice the knowledge acquired and become better citizens of their communities.

The Tor Tiv and chairman, Benue Council of Chiefs, Prof. James Ayatse, called on spirited individuals to join hands with the government and ITF to move the state forward through entrepreneurship.

The Tor Tiv urged ITF to step up the number of trainees during the next round from 500 to 1000.

Represented by Dr Shangev-De Adzongo, the monarch assured the graduands of his royal blessing to excel in their chosen trades.

The Director-General, IFT, Sir Joseph Ari, said that human capital empowerment was Ortom’s major concern, adding that Benue would be the first state to partner ITF on skills acquisition.

Ari urged the graduands to make life meaningful to themselves by making maximum use of the start-up kits given to them. (NAN)

Prison Inmate Undergoing PhD Programme — Controller

The Controller of Prisons, Lagos State Command, Tunde Ladipo, says education in prison facilities is getting better by the day, with an inmate in the Maximum Prison undergoing a PhD programme.

Ladipo told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that things were looking up, especially with the commitment of officials and performance of inmates.

The controller spoke to NAN on the sideline of the 2017 Ikoyi Prisons Education Award held in Lagos on Thursday.

He said that aside the inmate taking a PhD programme at the maximum prison, which is in Kirikiri, several others, both at the facility and the Ikoyi Prisons, were also undergoing Master’s degree programmes in various fields.

The controller said that despite being in incarceration, many prisoners had shown zeal to acquire education, even at the highest level.

Ladipo said the state of education facilities in prisons across the country was receiving a boost following the directive of the Controller-General of the Nigerian Prisons, Alhaji Ja’afaru Ahmed, that all their schools must be functional.

“He is very much interested in the reformation of the inmates, especially as it concerns their welfare and has instructed that the education of inmates must be taken seriously.

“ He has directed that all the schools within the walls of the prisons must be equipped and functional.

“The controller-general also directed that we ensure too that our inmates are reformed spiritually and ensure that their welfare is always on the front burner.

“He has gone a step ahead by providing drugs that will serve for not less than two years for inmates in prisons nationwide.

“This is coupled with the acquisition and distribution of operational vehicles, such as the Green Maria, ambulances, escort and sewage vehicles as all as official cars,’’ Ladipo said.

He said that in a bid to achieve accelerated growth and national transformation, every Nigerian must be given equal education opportunity, irrespective of where they may find themselves.

Ladipo said that the prison, as a reformation centre, must not be an exclusion, as those in there, are equally entitled to their rights to be educated.

“That is why we are putting every resource available at our disposal in ensuring that we make life conducive for the inmates by also bringing all levels of education to them within the facility.

“The essence of bringing these persons to the prisons is to change their lives and empower them for the better in the future,’’ he said.

Ladipo recalled that in 2015, the Maximum Security Prison School had produced a Master’s degree holder while still serving a jail term.

He, however, said the feat was not single-handedly achieved, but with the collaboration of some religious and non-governmental organisations.

“We appreciate their contributions, and like Oliver Twist, we are asking for more interventions from members of the public,’’ Ladipo said.

The prison boss assured that management would speak with the authorities on the need to provide a standard CBT centre for the conduct of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination by JAMB for the inmates.

He also appealed for more volunteer teachers to assist in the teaching of various subjects in the schools, especially as more inmates were yearning for education by the day. (NAN)

AIDS Still An Epidemic Among Children – UNICEF

Eighteen children in every hour were infected with HIV last year.

UNICEF said that this was a sign of scant progress in protecting the world’s young from the deadly AIDS-causing virus.

At the current rate of infection, there will be 3.5 million new cases of HIV among adolescents by 2030, according to projections in the 2017 UNICEF Statistical Update on Children and AIDS.

Around the world, nearly 37 million people – the equivalent of the population of Canada – were living with HIV last year, according to UNICEF.

Among these, 2.1 million adolescents had HIV, a 30 per cent increase from 2005, while 55,000 adolescents aged 10 to 19 and 120,000 children younger than 14 died from AIDS-related causes.

Infected children, younger than 4 years old, faced the highest risk of AIDS-related deaths compared with other age groups.

“The AIDS epidemic is not over; it remains a threat to the lives of children and young people,” said Dr Chewe Luo, the Chief of HIV for UNICEF, in a statement accompanying the report.

“It is unacceptable that we continue to see so many children dying from AIDS and so little progress made to protect adolescents from new HIV infections.”

UNICEF said nearly all the adolescent deaths were in sub-Saharan Africa and, worldwide, more adolescent girls than boys are infected.

The testing and treatment of babies is also lagging with fewer than half of HIV-exposed infants getting tested in their first two months of life.

UNICEF said some progress had been made in preventing mother-to-child transmission with about two million new infections averted since 2000, it said, but that progress was slowing.

UNICEF called for an array of actions, including getting treatment to all infected children, making intervention for adolescent girls in sub-Saharan Africa a priority, while also introducing HIV self-testing and better data collection. (Reuters/NAN)

Movie Review: 7 Reasons you should see “Christmas is coming”

This movie is the early harbinger of the spirit of Christmas.

The story that makes this movie a movie is an overwhelming hilarious fiber for a romantic comedy.

Seven reasons that make Ufuoma McDermott’s movie worth your time are explained below:

A very short review.

1. This movie will help you burn some calories.

Yes, good dosage of laughter burns calories. The story that makes this movie a movie is an overwhelming hilarious fiber for a romantic comedy. It’s such a simple yet laughter inducing story.

Right from the scene one to the very last scene, serious scenes are comically presented. Lesson one: Learn to laugh; it’d save your soul.

2. Despite a bad beginning, Henri moves on with the day.

She tries her best to put things right despite the awkward circumstances that keep popping up every single moment. All of this is a build up to the Christmas day. What happens on this singular work day sets the tone for the rest of the days leading to December 25th.

Henri shows a strength of character with her “the show must go on” attitude. Her bad day leads to December 25th, the most memorable day of her life. Here is the second thing we take away from the movie, no matter what happens to you, show your circumstances that you are tougher.

3. Another part of the story that exudes an important lesson is where it is revealed that Lola is deliberately sabotaging Henri’s effort at making a great presentation.

Lola expects to be promoted because her immediate boss, Osas is sleeping with her. Osas, in fury shouts at Lola, making her realize the reason Henri is promoted in place of her. “You would never be a leader without a team spirit.” This beautiful line from Osas is one of the best quotes from the movie. This quote shows how responsible Henri is in the office.

She knows her job well, she is a team player and a problem solver. These are the reasons she is promoted and asked to do the presentation. Lesson three: learn to be a team player.

4. There are many romantic scenes that adorn this movie (that’s why its’ called romantic comedy anyway) but there is a scene in which Henri verbalizes the fact that she is falling in love with Koko Williams, the CEO of the company.

She says: “Everything stops when I hear his voice.”  This goes to show that Henri is a noble soul, capable of loving. And she is not just in love with Koko alone, she also loves her friends. She forgives them for all the troubles they bring to her, after all their troubles have also fetched her love.

It’s that same love that makes them organize the December 25th party. Lesson four: Learn to love. Only love fetches love.

5. You need to see this movie because it will teach you bravery.

Henri is in love but it’s her friends that encourage her to go for what she wants. And they do not just ask her to go for love, they follow her to break into love’s heavily guarded compound.

6. This movie is the early harbinger of the spirit of Christmas

7. To find other very important lessons, see the movie yourself.

Strategy: 7 strategies that can help make your relationship happier in 10 minutes or less

Don't miss a chance to show them you care.

We rounded up a series of tweaks to your daily schedule that can bring you and your partner closer — and leave you less stressed.

  • Relationships are complicated, and they take a lot of work.
  • But that work can be fun — and easy.
  • Here are some easy strategies for strengthening your relationship on a daily basis, from saying "thanks" to putting a ban on talking about housework.

Relationships take work. A lot of work. But a week at a couples' retreat — while potentially nice — isn't the only way to reestablish intimacy.

You have multiple opportunities every day to show your partner you care, get to know them better, and defuse petty arguments.

Below, find seven strategies for strengthening your relationship, none of which take more than 10 minutes.

Try 'mindful conversation'

"Mindful conversation" isn't designed to help romantic couples, per se — but it's a useful exercise in learning to actually listen to what your partner is saying, instead of tuning out or waiting for your chance to jump in.

Here's how it works (one of you can be "A" and the other can be "B"):

1. A talks and B listens for a set time period (say, three minutes)

2. B responds with, "What I heard you say is …"

3. A gives feedback and B responds until A is satisfied.

4. A and B switch roles.

It might be awkward at first, but it gets easier over time.

Hug or kiss your partner

Happiness expert Gretchen Rubin previously told Business Insider that she and her family make a habit of practicing "warm greetings and farewells." Every time someone comes or goes, everyone gives a sincere hello or goodbye.

It's a habit most couples could stand to adopt. According to IKEA's "Life at Home" report, while most people surveyed say it's important to hug or kiss their partner in the morning, far fewer people report showing this kind of physical affection before heading out the door.

And yet research suggests that physical affection is related to greater satisfaction in romantic relationships. So take a minute or two to show your partner how much you care about them.

Say 'thank you' for something small

In "The Gratitude Diaries," journalist Janice Kaplan chronicles her yearlong experiment with being more grateful for everything and everyone in her life — including her husband.

She writes that thanking her husband for something as small as fixing a leaky faucet ended up improving her overall marriage.

As Business Insider's Erin Brodwin has reported, psychologists have known for a while that couples who express gratitude toward each other are more likely to stay together. In fact, thanking your partner even once can bring you two closer months later.

That's possibly because a single act of gratitude sparks a cycle of gratitude and generosity: You thank your partner, so your partner feels appreciated and invests more in the relationship, which in turn makes you feel more grateful to them.

Reassess the division of household chores

On the "Best of Both Worlds" podcast, time-management expert Laura Vanderkam and physician Sarah Hart-Unger recommend a simple strategy to relieve some of the stress from your relationship.

There are two steps:

1. Each person writes down all the family responsibilities they're currently taking care of.

2. Each person shares which of those responsibilities they enjoy, and which they don't.

The point is to figure out how much of the burden you're really shouldering, and to figure out if you can "swap" some chores so everyone's doing the things they enjoy.

Try the 'just like me' exercise

That's a tip from Chade-Meng Tan, a former Google engineer and the creator of the "Search Inside Yourself" emotional-intelligence course.

In his 2012 book, also called "Search Inside Yourself," Tan explains how he handles conflict with his wife:

"I visualize the other person in the next room. I remind myself that this person is just like me, wants to be free from suffering just like me, wants to be happy just like me, and so on. And then I wish that person wellness, happiness, freedom from suffering, and so on.

"After just a few minutes of doing this, I feel much better about myself, about the other person, and about the whole situation. A large part of my anger dissipates immediately."

Practice the '10-minute rule'

The 10-minute rule is a suggestion from sociology professor and relationship expert Terri Orbuch.

As Orbuch describes it in her book "5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage From Good to Great," the rule is a "daily briefing in which you and your spouse make time to talk about anything under the sun — except kids, works, and household tasks or responsibilities."

For example, you might want to ask:

• Do you think you are/were closer to your mom or dad? Why?

• What age do you feel like inside? Why?

• What do you think are the top-three worst songs of all time?

• What is the one thing you want to be remembered for?

According to Orbuch, learning new information about your partner makes things feel fresh and new again, and "mimics the emotional and physical state you were in during the first few years of your marriage."

Learn something new about your partner

In his 2014 book, "Mindwise," psychologist Nicholas Epley cites research suggesting that we think we know our partners a lot better than we really do. (Epley had a personal experience in which his wife bought him his least favorite ice cream flavor, thinking he'd love it.)

So Epley puts forth a simple solution: Don't assume you know everything about your partner. Ask questions and listen to the answers.

Strategy: 7 strategies that can help make your relationship happier in 10 minutes or less

Pope calls refugees 'Rohingya' after emotional meeting in Dhaka

Pope Francis speaks during an interreligious meeting in Dhaka on December 1, 2017. Pope Francis arrived in Bangladesh from Myanmar on November 30 for the second stage of a visit that has been overshadowed by the plight of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees. / AFP PHOTO / MUNIR UZ ZAMAN

Pope Francis referred to refugees who have fled Myanmar for Bangladesh as “Rohingya” on Friday, using a politically sensitive name for the persecuted minority for the first time on an Asia tour dominated by their plight after meeting some of them in Dhaka.

He made the comments after speaking to a small group of the refugees who have fled across the border in terror in recent months, after they travelled to Dhaka from their camp specially to meet him.

Among them was Shawkat Ara, a 12-year-old Rohingya orphan who broke down in tears shortly after the pope spoke to her and gently touched her head.

She later told AFP she escaped to Bangladesh after losing her entire family in an attack by the military in Myanmar.

“Today the presence of God is also called Rohingya,” the pope said after the emotional encounter with the refugees on the sidelines of a gathering with the leaders of different faiths in Dhaka.

“Let us continue to do the right thing and to help them. Let us continue to work to ensure that their rights are recognised,” he said.

“Let us not close our hearts, let us not look the other way.”

More than 620,000 Rohingya refugees have flooded into Bangladesh in the last three months, fleeing a violent military crackdown in mainly Buddhist Myanmar that the United Nations has described as ethnic cleansing.

Pope Francis is known for championing the rights of refugees and has repeatedly expressed his support for the Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority whom he has described as his “brothers and sisters”.

But the usually forthright pontiff walked a diplomatic tightrope during his four days in Myanmar — the first ever papal visit to the country — avoiding any direct reference to the ethnic cleansing allegations in public while appealing to Buddhist leaders to overcome “prejudice and hatred”.

Hours after arriving in Bangladesh he addressed the issue head-on, calling for “decisive” international measures to address the “grave crisis”.

But as in Myanmar, he avoided using the term “Rohingya”, drawing criticism from some rights activists and refugees.

The word is politically sensitive in mainly Buddhist Myanmar because many there refuse to see the Rohingya as a distinct ethnic group.

– Religious freedom –
The 80-year-old Roman Catholic leader has frequently sought to influence a world he sees as indifferent to the plight of refugees forced to leave their homelands, whether through poverty or conflict.

Last year he took three Syrian families, all Muslim, back to the Vatican after visiting them on the Greek island of Lesbos, a hotspot for asylum seekers.

He has praised Bangladesh for giving refuge to the Rohingya, who have brought with them stories of horrific abuse at the hands of the Myanmar military and local Buddhist mobs, including rape, arson and murder.

Earlier the pope led a giant open-air mass in Dhaka attended by around 100,000 Bangladeshi Catholics who sang hymns in Bengali and chanted “viva il papa” (“long live the pope”) as he was driven through the crowd in an open-sided popemobile.

Bangladesh has a tiny Christian population but they turned out in large numbers for Friday’s service, many having queued for hours to get into the park.

Some 4,000 police and security forces were deployed for the mass in the mainly Muslim country, which has suffered a number of attacks on religious minorities by Islamist extremists in recent years.

“I feel like I am blessed to join the Pope’s prayers,” said 60-year-old widow Pronita Mra, who had travelled from her village in northeastern Bangladesh.

“I’ll pray for my late husband and parents so that they go to heaven. I hope the Pope will pray for peace and harmony among all communities in Bangladesh.”

Christians make up less than 0.5 percent of officially secular Bangladesh’s population of 160 million and community leaders say it has become more difficult to practise their faith openly.

But speaking to Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu leaders, Francis praised the country’s commitment to religious freedom, which he said “stands as a subtle yet firm rebuke to those who would seek to foment division, hatred and violence in the name of religion”.

NTA digital switch over ready soon ―Lai Mohammed

Minister of information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has said that the digital switch over from analogue to digital system of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) will soon will be commissioned in phases.
Speaking during assessment of operations for commencement of digital switch over at the NTA transmitting station located at Ganmo, a suburb of Ilorin metropolis on Friday, the minister said that the adopted measure was due to the huge capital outlay of the project.
The minister,  who was accompanied by the Chairman, Digital Switch Over and Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Eddy Amanan and Moddibo Kawu, respectively, said that “for the whole country to be connected, we are going to do this thing in phases. The project
requires huge capital and Nigeria is just coming out of recession. So the government has to prioritise its programmes. So national digital swicth-over will come in phases.
“At the moment we have done Abuja and Jos then we are going to do six in the next couple of months. When we finish that set, we will look at Nigerian map to know where next to go, but at every point in time we will do one in every geo-political zone of the country”, he said.
On the state of readiness of the NTA Ilorin, the minister said: “We are ready to take off in Ilorin. We have seen the installation. What was lacking has been rectified. Right now we are transmitting 27
channels plus NTA and once we decide on the set date, the channels will be made available to the coverage areas of this transmitter.
“We require a total of three sets to be able to effectively cover the whole of Kwara state. And the plan is that we will replicate similar structure what in Ilorin in Patigi and Kaiama.
“Unfortunately, Kaiama has a bit of a setback. The mast there fell and it will take awhile for us to rebuild the mast. When Patigi is up and Kaiama is up, confidently we can say the whole of Kwara state will be covered and there will be spill over to the neighbouring state of Niger. So that is how ready we are.
“Right now those who have these set up boxes are receiving the 26 channels because for now Kwara TV is not yet on board. The official
launching will come later.”
On the market price of the set-up boxes, he said that “the market situation will determine the prices of those boxes when they are launched, but some lucky ones will get it at the rate of N1500.”
“We are here to come and have a first hand inspection of the level of readiness for the digital switch over of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Kwara state. I am sure, you have heard,  over the last couple weeks cacophony of messages as to the readiness or otherwise, the standard of the station in Ilorin,” he added.

APC Unity Cup: Taraba State Beats Gombe To Lift Maiden Edition Trophy

By Andrew Essien, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Unity Championship ended with Taraba State humbling their Gombe State counterpart on penalty to win the coveted cup which marked the maiden edition in Abuja.

The encounter which ended in a barren draw at the regulation time of 90 minutes, saw the Taraba side subduing the dogged Gombe side on a 5-3 penalty shootout that kept the spectators, the Minister of the FCT, Mohammed Musa Bello, his Women Affairs counterpart, Aisha Alhassan (Mama Taraba) and the members of the APC National Working Committee (NWC) on the edge of their seats.

Speaking after the ceremony to mark the end of the weeklong football fiesta, APC National Youth Leader, Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo told newsmen that the essence of the tournament was to create unity, activities for the Nigerian youths and to leave a legacy.

“It is an APC tournament and event, organised by the youth wing of the party. We came with this idea and innovation in order to create unity, activities for our young men and to have a legacy whereby we would have established something after our exit and something that would be seen, enjoyed, use for their own development and progress in life.”

He equally reacted to a PDP state playing in the final and winning the tournament, stressing: “Actually, it was their own determination to join the states that the APC is ruling. There is difference between sports and politics. The boys are very determined with the feeling to do their best to showcase themselves among states that have APC membership.

“We are thinking that it will also go a long way to telling people that APC is coming to stay in those states and also they are determined to be part and parcel of whatever is happening particularly at the national level,” he said.

Advising Nigerian youths, he said: “I call on them to embrace peace, unity, progress and whatever that will promote them in any sense whether economic, political, social and so on. Let them focus attention and do it. That is the only way they can secure and guarantee their future.”

The APC Youth Leader however assured that measures are already in place to make it an yearly event, revealing: “We will do our best, some of us that are here will encourage whoever that is coming after us to continue with this legacy.

“It is something that is happening for the first time in the history of political parties in Nigeria and I believe other parties will emulate what we have done and we keep praying and hoping that this kind of event continues.

On the turn out during the closing ceremony, he said: “I am very impressed by the leadership of the party and our leaders. You can see the national chairman, our governors are here, the Minister of FCT and members of the Working Committee among others.”

Jalo also noted that the biggest take away of the tournament is “to achieve unity because young people came from different states to participate in the event. That is our target.”

Turkey issues warrant for ex-top CIA figure over Gulen links

Fethullah Gulen. PHOTO:AFP

Turkey on Friday issued an arrest warrant for a former top CIA official over alleged links to the group blamed for last year’s attempted overthrow of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, state media reported.

An Istanbul prosecutor ordered the detention of Graham Fuller, ex-vice chairman of the CIA’s National Intelligence Council, as part of an investigation into the movement led by US-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen and the July 15, 2016 failed coup.

Turkey accuses Gulen of masterminding the attempted putsch and has dubbed his movement the “Fethullah Terrorist Organisation” (FETO).

Gulen rejects Turkey’s claims and the group denies any links to terror.

The warrant accuses the former CIA official of “violating the constitution” and “attempting to overthrow the Turkish government or stop it from doing its duty”.

He is also suspected of “procuring information that must remain a state secret for political or military espionage”, state-run news agency Anadolu reported.

Fuller previously said in a Huffington Post piece that he wrote a letter as a private citizen in support of Gulen’s green card application in 2006 because he “did not believe that Gulen constituted a security threat to the US”.

His warrant is part of the same probe which has already detained prominent businessman and civil society activist Osman Kavala over links to the coup bid as well as Metin Topuz, a US consulate employee in Istanbul, Anadolu said.

Officials involved in the probe are also investigating Henri Barkey, professor of international relations at Lehigh University, and former main opposition Republican People’s Party MP Aykan Erdemir, who is now based in the US.

Authorities on Tuesday issued an arrest warrant for Erdemir over claims he gave “fake reports” for use as evidence by US officials investigating gold trader Reza Zarrab and Mehmet Hakan Atilla, the deputy chief executive of Turkish lender Halkbank.

Zarrab was arrested last year but has now agreed to be the prosecution’s star witness in a potentially explosive New York trial over whether Turkish individuals including Atilla violated US sanctions against Iran.

In his testimony on Thursday, Zarrab implicated Erdogan in a multi-billion-dollar gold-for-oil scheme allegedly designed to subvert the sanctions.

The case has provoked Erdogan’s ire and added tension to Ankara-Washington relations, already strained by the US failure to extradite Gulen.

Turkish officials including Erdogan have called the case a “plot” against Turkey pushed forward by Gulenists in the US.

Asiwaju Kayode Onafowokan, the Chairman, Akarigbo Coronation Organising Committee, made this disclosure at a press conference on Friday in Sagamu.

Onafowokan said the week-long ceremony would feature various events, which would precede the coronation proper, organised by the youth wing of the committee.

“The pre-coronation ceremonies will start with a 4-day programme of activities, which include a football competition among the various Remo constituencies.

“There is also the Akarigbo marathon race, a youth rally across Remoland and a youth party, following the coronation event proper on Thursday,’’ he said.

Onafowokan explained that the official conferment of the staff of office on the monarch would be performed by Amosun, adding that maximum security arrangements would be provided at the venue of the ceremony.

Strategy: I ate only foods that have been boycotted by the alt-right and liberals — and it revealed an absurd truth about Trump's America

Eating Papa John's pizza.

As the boycotts added up, it felt like you could craft an entire diet based on what certain people are refusing to eat. So, I decided to do just that.

  • Food brands have been hit hard by boycotts by the right and left.
  • I decided to go on a boycott diet, eating only foods boycotted by the left one day, and only foods boycotted by the right the next.
  • Liberals may be missing out on tastier food than conservatives — but there's much more to the story.

In a politically polarized country, what you eat can say a lot about what you believe.

The past two years have seen an unending series of politically motivated boycotts and counterboycotts. People on the left ditched Papa John's after the founder slammed NFL leadership, only for the right to start smashing Keurigs because the brand pulled advertising from Sean Hannity's Fox News show.

With the boycotts adding up, it felt like you could craft an entire diet based on what certain people are refusing to eat.

So, I decided to do just that.

For one day, I would only eat items boycotted by the left and endorsed by the right. The next day, I would do the opposite, feasting on liberals' favorite foods, which conservatives refuse to touch.

The experience would leave me feeling physically ill — and emotionally queasy.

I started the day off with a conservative favorite — Chick-fil-A.

Progressives arguably kicked off the modern era of politically motivated food boycotts in 2012, after Chick-fil-A donated to anti-LGBT groups and its CEO voiced opposition to same-sex marriage.

If you look at Chick-fil-A's sales, the high-profile boycott was a failure. Just two years after the controversy, Chick-fil-A beat KFC to become the biggest chicken chain in the US in terms of sales.

Among Republicans, the chain still ranks No. 1 on Harris Poll's ranking of the reputations of the 100 most visible companies in the US. Across all consumers, the chain is ranked significantly lower, in the No. 17 slot.

Eating a Chick-fil-A breakfast sandwich, I'm forced to admit that Chick-fil-A's egg and sausage sandwich is superior to almost any other fast-food breakfast offering.

That might be one reason that boycotts of Chick-fil-A didn't actually hurt sales.

Conservatives doubled down to support the chain during the boycott. And, with high-quality food and menu items that no other chain has managed to replicate, apolitical and more progressive customers may have been more inclined to turn a blind eye to executives' viewpoints.

For lunch, I tried to partake in a more short-lived alt-right obsession: Wendy's.

Not every right-wing boycott starts with the alt-right, a loosely allied group of white supremacists, men's-rights activists, and other far-right people. But with the social-media power of many alt-right personalities, they often play a role in starting or amplifying boycotts.

Wendy's was designated the " target="_blank"official burger of the Neo-Nazi Alt-Right movement" by a white-supremacist website after the brand's Twitter account tweeted, then deleted, an image of Pepe the Frog. Once a common meme, Pepe was declared a "hate symbol" by the Anti-Defamation League after being adopted as a symbol of people — primarily the alt-right — spreading racist and anti-Semitic messages.

However, when I showed up at Wendy's, the location was closed for renovation — which may have been for the best. Still, the Wendy's Pepe tweet is a convenient representation of how quickly things can go from light-hearted fun to straight-up hate speech on social media.

With Wendy's closed, I decided it was time to wade into the pizza culture wars.

Papa John's founder and CEO John Schnatter slammed NFL leadership in November over the ongoing controversy over players' protests during the national anthem.

Many on the left trashed Papa John's for Schnatter's comments, promising to boycott the chain. At the same time, people on the right rallied around Papa John's as "America's pizza."

It was a dramatic time for the pizza chain. DiGiorno tweeted implying that Papa John's subpar sales were due to pizza tasting like "dog s—". Neo-nazis and the alt-right came out to support the chain. Finally, after two weeks, Papa John's tweeted that it hadn't meant to disparage the protests — and ended the tweet with the middle-finger emoji.

I have to disagree with the critics — Papa John's pizza does not taste like "dog s—."

It's actually pretty good!

If I'm picking a personal favorite out of the core three (Pizza Hut, Papa John's, Domino's), I'm going to go with Domino's because I like a puffy, almost artificial-tasting crust. But, Papa John's is perfectly fine, especially if you order the pan pizza. And, of course, the chain's cheesy bread is divine.

My day eating like a committed alt-right boycotter wasn't that different from a typical day in my life — just with a bit more fast food.

For dinner, I drank a Coors Light and ate some pasta I had bought from Whole Foods. Both were predictably average, but I had plenty of choices to pick from.

Progressives' semi-official list of boycotted brands is a long one maintained by Shannon Coulter. Coulter started the #GrabYourWallet boycott spreadsheet in October 2016 to encourage people to boycott companies that do business with Trump's family.

So, that means I had a lot of options to choose from.

Currently, there are more than 70 brands on the Grab Your Wallet boycott list, primarily retailers that sell Ivanka Trump's fashion line.

King's Hawaiian, See's Candies, Trident gum, and Welch's all made the "de-prioritized" protest list for advertising on "Celebrity Apprentice," a show that Trump is a producer on, but that is unlikely to return to air. Amazon — and therefore Whole Foods — made the list for advertising on Breitbart and carrying Trump products. MillerCoors and Yuengling made the list for having executives who support Trump or donated to his campaign.

Unfortunately, I found it hard to stomach the conservative diet — literally.

As previously stated, I quite enjoy eating Chick-fil-A and, to a lesser degree, Papa John's.

But, it would be a violation of journalistic ethics not to include the fact that my digestive system violently rebelled against my right-wing diet. As someone who was mostly fine after eating 150 shrimp in one sitting, I can't quite say what went wrong — but something certainly did.

As I dealt with the indigestion, I contemplated food boycotts. For someone who supports same-sex marriage — like, for example, me — boycotting Chick-fil-A makes sense.

But, are boycotts worth it if they only help Chick-fil-A's sales? If the chain treats workers well, is it perhaps actually more progressive than other fast-food chains? Is is unethical to eat a chicken biscuit — or just naive to think most people would be willing to surrender their chicken in the first place?

I hoped adopting a more liberal diet would sooth my troubled mind and stomach.

I started the day with a triumvirate of liberal brands: Kellogg's, Starbucks, and Chobani.

Many on the right ditched Kellogg's after the cereal brand announced in November 2016 that it would no longer advertise on far-right site Breitbart. Starbucks has been boycotted for everything from hiring refugees to featuring a lesbian couple in ads. And, Chobani sued right-wing conspiracy theorist Alex Jones after he spread misinformation about the yogurt brand hiring refugees.

This breakfast was not outside of my comfort zone.

While I am a fan of Chick-fil-A and eat it somewhat regularly, I buy Starbucks much more often — roughly once a week. I grew up eating Kellogg's cereal, and Chobani became part of my breakfast routine in college.

Everything I ate for breakfast was predictably tasty and adequate. Alt-right boycotters who are mad about Kellogg's advertising policy aren't missing out on anything groundbreaking, but they are cutting some pretty reliably good cereals out of their diets.

Lunch from Pizza Hut was another story.

Having gone on the record as enjoying Papa John's, I will now say that Pizza Hut — at least from the combination Taco Bell-Pizza Hut in New York City — is very bad.

In keeping with my liberal diet, I wanted to enjoy Pizza Hut. One day after Papa John's CEO blamed subpar sales on NFL players' protests during the national anthem, the CEO of Pizza Hut's parent company, Yum Brands, said the controversy wasn't affecting sales. Support for Pizza Hut immediately exploded online from the left.

However, the personal pizza from the chain was the most offensively bad pizza I have ever consumed. I was only able to finish half of this stale, overly sweet mess.

For dinner, I ate more Whole Foods, which is being boycotted by the right as well as the left.

In February, Trump supporters threatened to boycott Amazon after news broke that it would support Washington State in a federal lawsuit challenging Trump's executive order barring people from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US.

And, in June, Trump tweeted that the "Amazon Washington Post" is "FAKE NEWS."

The fact that both the left and the right are boycotting Amazon is one of the things that turns me off from the recent explosion of boycotts. If both sides of the political spectrum are coming out against Amazon, and the company is still wildly successful, are boycotts working at all?

Overall, my two days of dieting only revealed what an absurd position Americans have found themselves in.

I would say conservatives trump liberals when it comes to boycott diets. Then again, eating like an alt-right supporter also left me doubled over in gastronomical distress. You win some, you lose some.

However, comparing boycott diets based on taste — or even their impact on my digestive system — misses the point. Just because Chick-fil-A is more delicious than any other thing I ate doesn't mean it should get a get-out-of-boycotts-free card.

I also found myself wondering what exactly the cut-off line for a boycott was.

For some, it's running ads on a TV show that isn't currently on the air. For others, it's hiring people fleeing war-torn countries who are legally in the US as refugees.

As the lists of boycotted brands add up, I mostly was just exhausted. In 2017, basically every brand wants to avoid taking sides — but, in the Trump era, that's impossible.

"We've never seen something like this — a consumer awakening, if you will," Chris Allieri, the founder of the communications and marketing firm Mulberry & Astor, told me earlier this year, in reference to the rise of consumer boycotts.

To believe in boycotts is to believe in an individual's ability to create change.

Surprisingly, my favorite item from the diet — the one I would most hate to give up — actually revealed the best reason to boycott.

Following boycotts, Chick-fil-A has attempted to move away from its conservative image and cut any talk of politics. Some franchisees have started donating to LGBT Pride events. And, three years after the boycotts started, the US Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage.

Basically, the boycott didn't hurt Chick-fil-A's sales, but it did send a message about Americans' increasing support of same-sex marriage.

If I'm optimistic, I can see today's boycotts similarly serving as a way for people to make their voices heard.

Boycotting the NFL, for example, have kept the spotlight on players kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality for almost two years. The boycotts may not actually be the one thing impacting NFL ratings, but it's kept the issue in the headlines.

Similarly, Nordstrom dropping Ivanka Trump's line after boycott threats may have been purely motivated by the fashion brand not selling well. However, the boycott helped bring attention to questions about how the Trump family could profit from the president's political power.

Many boycotts can feel like much ado about nothing, adding onto an already lengthy list of perceived slights. However, if protesters can use boycotts to highlight their values — identifying what Americans will and will not tolerate — then it is possible for them to actually create lasting change. At least, I hope so.

Strategy: I ate only foods that have been boycotted by the alt-right and liberals — and it revealed an absurd truth about Trump's America

[The Sexuality Blog] A SlutWalk is coming to Lagos

Slutwalk

I guess this is the last thing you’d expect to happen in Lagos, but it is actually happening. Lagos is having its very Slutwalk. The La Femme Foundation, a women’s right NGO is organizing the very first slut walk as a place where women can safely protest the rampant sexual violence targeted against women, educate women how to protect themselves and prosecute the men who deign to sexual harass them or even outrightly rape women. The Slutwalk is also meant to empower women who have suffered from rape and sexual violence and allow them speak publicly and plainly about their assault.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

You would think that this is the kind of thing that Nigeria’s myriad of magazines targeted at women would throw all their support behind, but it has actually been the opposite and even Adesua Oyenokwe’s  Today’s Woman (Oyenokwe still has some explaining to do because of her horrible interview with Bobrisky) went as far asking the organizers to drop it because that kind of thing would never happen here. Well the organizers didn’t even bother with the negativity and are going ahead with the Slutwalk. We at the Sexuality Blog think it is especially important that this is happening here and now, especially in the light of all the rape accusations by men of influence on young, vulnerable men and women that has been exposed in the last year. We need to publicize their atrocities and show everyone that it matters that we have a voice.

The Slut Walk will be held on December 17, from 9am with the meeting point at the Lekki-Ikoyi bridge roundabout.  The dress code is all black, with a gele on your head to show solidarity.
