Zimbabwe's former VP returns home after Mugabe ouster

Phelekezela Mphoko

Zimbabwe’s former vice president, who was on a trip abroad during last month’s military takeover that led to Robert Mugabe’s resignation, has returned home, local media reported Saturday.

Phelekezela Mphoko was the second deputy appointed in 2014 by longtime strongman Mugabe, along with current President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mphoko had flown to Japan on official business the day before the army took over the country in an operation that culminated in Mugabe’s ouster after a 37-year rule.

But instead of returning home at the end of his mission, Mphoko sought sanctuary in Botswana, where he remained until Friday.

“Mr Mphoko and his family arrived at the Zimbabwean side of the border at 1:15 pm (1115 GMT) aboard a Zimbabwe department of immigration minibus accompanied by Botswana immigration officials,” The Herald newspaper reported.

He was with his wife Laurinda, son Siqokoqela and seven other family members, the paper added.

According to The Herald, Mphoko spoke to Mnangagwa by phone and got “the necessary assurances that he was free to come back to Zimbabwe”.

The former vice president and longtime diplomat — less well-known in the country than popular Mnangagwa — was reportedly a member of a faction in the ruling ZANU-PF which rallied behind Mugabe’s wife Grace and backed her bid to replace her husband as president.

They were reportedly expelled from the party for “engaging in activities meant to destabilise the Government”.

Former finance minister and alleged member of the faction, Ignatius Chombo, was last week the first Mugabe loyalist to be charged by the new government on fraud charges dating from 2004-2009, when he held a different ministerial role.

Other senior members of the so-called G-40 faction are believed to be in hiding.

Mnangagwa, 75, named his cabinet overnight Thursday and he is expected to appoint his two vice presidents following a special ZANU-PF congress in mid-December, according to a government statement issued Saturday.

But he has come under fire for naming two military allies to top positions in his new cabinet, including Sibusiso Moyo, a major general who on November 15 went on state TV to announce the military’s takeover — a power grab which led to the 93-year-old Mugabe quitting the presidency a week later.

Another cabinet minister is the airforce boss — Air Marshal Perence Shiri, who had previously headed a special North-Korean trained unit that is alleged to have committed atrocities during a crackdown on a rebellion in the western Matabeleland province in the early 1980s.

An estimated 20,000 people were killed during the campaign known as Gukurahundi.Mnangagwa was also criticised for recycling ministers from Mugabe’s discredited era.

Following public outcry, he dropped Lazarous Dokora as education minister on Saturday, replacing him with professor Paul Mavima, another ZANU-PF legislator.

Search for suspect after German Christmas market bomb scare

German policemen stand guard on a steet on December 1, 2017 after a suspicious object prompted the evacuation of a Christmas market in Potsdam. "Suspicions of an unconventional explosive device have been confirmed," police in Brandenburg state outside Berlin said on Twitter.Julian Stähle / dpa / AFP

German police were searching Saturday for the sender of a package initially feared to contain a bomb found near a Christmas market in Potsdam, almost a year after a deadly terror attack at a similar market in Berlin.

The device was uncovered on Friday at a pharmacy just off the Christmas market in central Potsdam, a picturesque city near the German capital.

“We are undergoing intense investigations in all directions,” a local police spokesman told AFP.

A pharmacist sounded the alert after finding a canister with wires inside the package.

After initial reports that it was an explosive device, local authorities said the cylindrical canister was filled with nails and powder, batteries and wires — as well as a powerful firework of a type not allowed in Germany — but there was no sign of a detonator inside.

It is not yet clear if the Christmas market was the target, or only the pharmacy.

“Both options are possible,” Brandenburg interior minister Karl-Heinz Schroeter said.

The market was only partially evacuated on Friday and will reopen as normal on Saturday with a stronger police presence, the spokesman said.

Germany has been on high alert for possible jihadist attacks after last December’s deadly assault at a Christmas market in central Berlin.

The attacker, Tunisian asylum seeker Anis Amri, hijacked a truck and murdered its Polish driver before killing another 11 people and wounding dozens more by ploughing the heavy vehicle through the market.

Four days later, while on the run, he was shot dead by Italian police in Milan. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack, as well as several others on German soil over the last two years.

“The battle to change Africa doesn’t exist only in Africa,” says Chude Jideonwo as “How to Win Elections in Africa” book tour continues in Atlanta, Boston and Pennsylvania

How to Win Elections in Africa: Parallels with Donald Trump, the new book by StateCraft Inc. co-founders, Chude Jideonwo and Adebola Williams, continued its tour around the United States of America with stops at the Harvard University, University of Massachusetts, Boston, and in Atlanta, Georgia on November 25, 28 and 29 respectively.

The American tour kicked off on November 8 with the launch at Yale University and the book is resonating strongly with academic and intellectual circles. On November 25, this year, Chude Jideonwo joined the hosts of the AfroBuzz podcast: Bebe, Nunoo and James, Remi Makanjuola, and Toks Ogun, for a chat about the lessons from the book, the unique experiences of StateCraft Inc. and its work on elections in Africa, the business of nation-building, and the urgency for a newer generation of Africans who are directly involved in the politics of the continent in their respective countries. The talk was followed by a book signing event.

Described by Jideonwo as being “essentially about all the things that make elections happen globally and the order in which they matter or don’t matter in sub-Saharan African contexts, as seen through our experience in four national elections in three countries,” ‘How to Win’ has also become a go-to resource material on issues connected with democracy, elections and campaigns in the world. On Wednesday, November 28, Jideonwo shared his thoughts about the parallels between America, American events and the rest of the world, especially in the context of development in an interview with the BBC Public Radio International’s The World series.

The interview preceded two further discussions: the first at the University of Massachusetts’ Center for Peace, Democracy and Development at the UMass Boston Campus Center in Boston and another at the Harvard Law School Center on the Legal Profession where Jideonwo was interviewed by Kenneth Ononeze Okwor for the Harvard African Policy Journal.

How to Win Elections in Africa: Parallels with Donald Trump’ United States of America book tour will continue in the coming days with book discussions in Pennsylvania and Washington D.C. on Monday, 4 and Tuesday, 5 December 2017.

The discussion in Pennsylvania will be about governance and politics in the context of building businesses and creating value in and for Africa at Lafayette College, Pennsylvania while the John Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies will host the discussion in Washington D.C.

Oritsefemi: "I did not know it was Banky W's wedding" – Singer

Singer, Oritsefemi and wife, Nabila Fash.

Oritsefemi also stated that his wedding did trend on Twitter, which further proves that his wedding did just fine.

Oritsefemi has finally addressed the elephant in the room concerning the clash of dates for his and Banky W's wedding, but he only seems to have made things worse.

During a recent interview with Punch's Saturday Beats, the "Double Wahala" crooner denied that Banky W's wedding outshined his.

Oritsefemi then added that he had not even known that it was Banky's wedding day.

Oritsefemi also stated that his wedding did trend on Twitter, which further proves that his wedding did just fine.

“Initially, I did not notice that people were comparing my wedding with Banky W’s but later, after the whole ceremony, I noticed it. I did not even know that Banky was getting married on the same day that I did.

"But to be truthful, I knew that he had a ceremony about a week ago so I thought that was his wedding. I have no issues with both of us getting married on the same day, if anything; it was more fun because like they say, the more the merrier.

"I was the one that got married and I am not even doing any form of comparison. All I wanted was to have a classy wedding and I got that at the end of the day. My wedding was well attended by highly respected people in the society.

"I don’t see any comparison because Banky even had his own in South Africa while mine was in Nigeria. Banky’s wedding did not outshine mine. Although I did not follow what was happening on the social media, I was told that my wedding trended on Twitter.

Oritsefemi added that: "I feel it was more fun for us that we got married on the same day and we were keeping people busy on the Internet. The Internet almost went crazy for both weddings. I don’t see any problem with it.

"Entertainers don’t see such as a competition but it is the fans that always start such comparison. All I know is that both weddings went well, they were classy and it would go down in history as one of the most talked about weddings of 2017. I congratulate Banky W on his wedding and wish him and his bride blessings."

Philippines 'prepared for worst' in dengue vaccine concerns

This file photo taken on April 4, 2016 shows a nurse showing vials of the anti-dengue vaccine Dengvaxia, developed by French medical giant Sanofi, during a vaccination program at an elementary school in suburban Manila. The Philippines said on December 1, 2017 it had suspended use of the landmark vaccine for the potentially deadly dengue virus after its manufacturer warned it could worsen the disease in some cases. The Philippines has vaccinated more than 700,000 children with the drug since 2016 when it became the first country to start using it on a mass scale.NOEL CELIS / AFP

The Philippines is prepared for a “worst-case scenario” following warnings that an anti-dengue vaccine administered to thousands of children may worsen the disease in some cases, a health official said Saturday.

Department of Health spokesman Eric Tayag said the country had already taken precautions against potential mishaps when it became the first country to use the landmark vaccine in 2016.

The developer of the world’s first vaccine for the potentially deadly virus, French pharmaceutical giant Sanofi, revealed earlier this week that it could trigger more severe symptoms in people who had not been previously infected with dengue.

More than 733,000 children have already received Dengvaxia, raising fears that many could develop the harsher form of the disease.

“The Department of Health is prepared for a worst-case scenario,” Tayag told ABS-CBN television, a day after the agency announced it was suspending its mass vaccination programme.

Tayag said the government had been careful to only implement the scheme in areas where dengue was already widespread and had only given it to children aged nine or older.

“They are being followed up for adverse effects following immunisation,” he said.

He added that the department, which had previously said there were no reported cases of worsened infection among those who received the vaccine, was also checking hospital records for severe cases of dengue.

Sanofi had said such acute dengue cases would not become apparent till about five years after vaccination, Tayag added.

The developer initially said its Dengvaxia vaccine was “critical” in the fight against dengue, the world’s most common mosquito-borne virus.

It said Wednesday that a new study has confirmed Dengvaxia’s benefits for “those who had prior infection” with the potentially-lethal disease.

“For those not previously infected by dengue virus, however, the analysis found that in the longer term, more cases of severe disease could occur following vaccination upon a subsequent dengue infection,” Sanofi said.

More than 1,000 people in the Philippines died from dengue last year, out of more than 211,000 suspected cases, according to the government.

Russia 2018: Croatian Stars Wary Of Dangerous Super Eagles

kovacic-pjaca-craotia-nigeria-super eagles-super-eagles-world cup-world-cup-group-d-completesportsnigeria.com

By Adeboye Amosu: Croatian midfielder, Mateo Kovacic and winger, Marko Pjaca, are expecting a tough opening fixture against Nigeria at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.‎

The Europeans who will also confront former champions Argentina and debutants Iceland in Group D of the tournament will face the Super Eagles on June 16 at the Kaliningrad Stadium.

Kovacic, who plays for European champions Real Madrid describes the Super Eagles as a tricky opponent but states that his team will go all out for a win against the three-time African champions.

“Argentina has a great team, we got to just know how good Iceland is in the qualifiers and African teams are always tricky to play against. But just like I am sure we are facing 3 very good opponents, I am sure that we will enter each game with plan to win and get 3 points,” Kovacic tweets on his Twitter handle.

Pjaca, a winger who has been capped 13 times by Croatia and currently in the books of Italian side Juventus labels the Super Eagles a dangerous opponent.

“A tough group, but we knew we had no easy opponents. Argentina has the top stars, Iceland who, after the excellent European championship, continued the series of great results and dangerous Nigeria. It will certainly be difficult for us, but it has to be,” reads a Tweet on Pjaca’s Twitter handle.

US Senate passes tax rewrite, in major win for Trump

Reporters wait for the arrival of senators for vote on the tax bill on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC on December 1, 2017. Donald Trump's tax reform plan has overcome pockets of resistance within Republican ranks, US senators said, setting up a vote that could provide the president with his first major legislative victory."We have the votes," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters as he entered the chamber.mari matsuri / AFP

US Senate Republicans narrowly passed landmark tax reform early Saturday, a critical step toward delivering a monumental legislative victory for President Donald Trump in his first year in office.

After a marathon session that stretched overnight, the chamber voted 51 to 49 in favour of the nation’s largest tax overhaul in 31 years, overcoming stubborn internal Republican resistance and dismissing Democrats angry over last-minute revisions to the bill.

The Senate version and the one passed recently by the House of Representatives must now be reconciled into a single bill, and approved again by both chambers, before it can be signed into law.

Both versions dramatically lower the corporate tax rate from 35 percent to 20 percent, and include more modest tax cuts aimed at individuals across all income levels.

The Senate vote amounts to a reversal of fortune for Trump and Republican leaders, whose bill just 24 hours earlier was on the brink of collapse when a handful of Republican deficit hawks balked at the controversial plan’s $1.5 trillion price tag for 10 years.

Eager to claim victory on what may be one of the best days of his presidency so far, Trump tweeted: “We are one step closer to delivering MASSIVE tax cuts for working families across America.”

“Look forward to signing a final bill before Christmas!” he added.

After extensive negotiations, the bill was salvaged. Tax writers tweaked the 479-page measure deep into the night, leaving Democrats furious over the last-minute, handwritten changes to the legislation.

Trump, desperate for a congressional win, has been more active in the legislation’s navigation through Congress than he was with the Obamacare repeal bill that failed earlier this year.

He has repeatedly stressed he wants the tax bill on his desk by year’s end.

Democrats fumed that they received the text — peppered with extensive handwritten modifications that earned scorn from opposition lawmakers — only a few hours before the vote.

“We understand they have the votes to pass their bill despite a process — and a product — that no one can be proud of and everyone should be ashamed of,” top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer told colleagues.

Haste and the darkness of night were Trump’s allies in the process, Schumer said.

Holdouts relent

As the final vote was tallied, grinning Republicans congratulated one another with handshakes, backslaps and hugs.

A trio of Democrats including Senator Ron Wyden, a ferocious opponent of the bill, stood motionless in the back of the chamber.

Mindful of the historic nature of the vote, Vice President Mike Pence presided over the chamber during final passage.

Several Republicans who had voiced concerns about the bill were ultimately lured by McConnell’s agreement to make changes.

Senators Bob Corker and Jeff Flake, a pair of Trump critics, worried about the impact of the tax cuts on the country’s massive deficit.

A nonpartisan congressional tax scorekeeper had projected the tax overhaul would add $1 trillion to the deficit, even after accounting for expected economic growth from the plan.

The analysis complicated Trump’s argument that the tax cuts would pay for themselves through additional economic growth.

Flake eventually agreed to back the legislation, after receiving assurances from the White House that action would be taken to shield thousands of young “Dreamer” immigrants from deportation.

Corker hoped to offset the cost of the tax cuts by including a rise in the corporate tax rate in later years, but the effort failed.

He was the lone Republican no vote on the bill, but his opposition was not enough to derail it.

‘Rubik’s Cube’

Lawmakers said a deal was reached to raise tax deductions for certain small businesses, a move that got two more wavering senators on board.

As an offset, the bill’s tax rate for US corporations repatriating profits from abroad would rise, from 10 percent to possibly 14 percent.

“It’s like the Rubik’s Cube trying to fit everybody’s concerns in. But I think we’ve ended up with a better bill,” Senator Rob Portman said.

Republicans hold a narrow 52-48 Senate majority. With all Democrats opposing the tax plan, just three Republican defectors would have killed it.

Senator Susan Collins had voiced deep scepticism about the bill but ultimately gave her backing after securing changes, including on healthcare and local taxes. The Senate and the House must negotiate a compromise bill, and contentious votes are likely in the weeks ahead.

“Now, we will move quickly to a conference committee so we can get a final bill to President Trump’s desk,” House Speaker Paul Ryan said in a statement.

Democrats argue that the plan is too expensive and will accommodate only the rich, and that it could ultimately impact cherished US entitlement programmes like Medicare.”The federal treasury is being looted tonight!” leftist Senator Bernie Sanders roared in the chamber.

How Nigeria’s Russia 2018 Group Opponents Have Fared At The World Cup

fifa-world cup-super eagles-2018argentina-croatia-iceland-world cup-rohr-super eagles-argentina-nigeria-completesportsnigeria.com

Nigeria have been drawn in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Group D along with Croatia. Argentina and Iceland Completesportsnigeria.com’s JOHNNY EDWARD x-rays performances of the Super Eagles’new World Cup group opponents in past editions of the Mundial.

ARGENTINA

Two time World Champions, Argentina, will be hoping to banish their runner-up hoodoo when they kick off their campaign at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The La Albiceleste have failed to win their third World Cup title. They reached the quarter-finals four times in the 15 appearances.

Having won the World Cup in 1978 and 1986, Argentina have failed to qualify from the group stage only three times. In 1958, 1962 and in 2002.

Russia 2018 will be Argentina’s 16th appearance at the World Cup.

A Lionel Messi inspired La Albiceleste have never lost a game to Nigeria in their last five encounters at the World Cup so far. Their final Group D game against Nigeria on the 26th of June 2018 at the Saint Petersburg Stadium will be a landmark sixth encounter between the two teams at the World Cup.

Argentina have won 42 games, lost 21 and drawn 14 in 77 World Cup games since they made their debut in 1930.

CROATIA

Croatia made their debut at the FIFA World Cup in 1998 and finished third in the tournament, defeating the likes of Jamaica and Japan in the group stages. They lost 1-0 to Argentina in their final group game, but bounced back to beat Romania and Germany in the round of 16 and quarter-finals respectively, only to lose to eventual winners France 2-1 in the semi-final..

In the third place match, the Davor Suker led side edged Netherlands 2-1 to end their fairy tale at the World Cup,

Their second appearance at the 2002 Korea/Japan was not a pleasant one as the Croats could only manage one win, losing the remaining two games to make early exit from the tournament.

Croatia lost by a lone goal to Mexico in their opening game, but defeated Italy 2-1. They could not go past Ecuador in their final group game which ended their dream of a knockout berth.

Their third appearance at the Mundial was in Germany 2006 where they suffered the similar fate, but this time around they failed to win a game, losing to Brazil in their opening game and only recorded two draws, against Australia and Japan.

At the 2014 World Cup, despite parading the likes of Darijo Srna, Vedran Ćorluka, Dejan Lovren,Šime Vrsaljko, Luka Modrić, Ivan Rakitić, Ivan Perišić, Mateo Kovačić, Ivica Olić and Nikica Jelavić, the Croatian team failed to advance to the next round as they could only get a win against Cameroon in Group A that also housed hosts Brazil and Mexico.

In four appearances at the FIFA World Cup, Croatia have played 16 games, won seven, drawn two and lost seven. They have also scored 21 goals, conceding 17.

Victory for Trump as Senate passes $1.5 tn tax bill

Republican senators and President Donald Trump are celebrating following senate’s passage of nearly $1.5 trillion tax bill, in a vote of 51-49 which took place Saturday morning.

It is a significant victory for Republicans as it marks the first major overhaul of the U.S. tax system in 30 years.

Sen. Bob Corker, a Republican from Tennessee, joined Democrats in opposing the bill as no Democrat voted in favour of the legislation.

The bulk of the bill’s tax cuts affect businesses and higher-earning individuals and gives more modest breaks to others.

Now that the Senate passed its bill, the next step is for the House to vote on Monday to send the bill to conference committee.

At some point next week, the Senate will do the same thing, and then they will begin “conferencing” the two bills.

“I commend my Senate colleagues for this historic action,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wisc., said in a statement following the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

“For the first time since 1986, both the House and the Senate have passed a major overhaul of our nation’s tax code. Now we will move quickly to a conference committee so we can get a final bill to President Trump’s desk.”

Ryan continued, “The hardworking people of this country are counting on us to deliver real relief. That means more jobs, faster economic growth, bigger paychecks, and a tax cut for Americans from all walks of life.

“These opportunities only come around once in a generation, and now it is time for us to seize this moment.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., called the Senate’s passage of its tax bill a “great day for the country.”

He also defended pushing it through during the early hours of Saturday, after giving Democrats just hours to read through the changes before the vote.

Lifestyle: The history of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria

This is the condition of many people in Nigeria.

Nigeria has high HIV/AIDS numbers that are gradually climbing.

1 December 2017 is marked to be World HIV/AIDS Day and Nigeria more than most countries need the awareness that the day creates.

Almost 2 decades after the first reported cases were identified in Nigeria and the nation still has some of the highest statistics in HIV/AIDS around the world.

What is HIV/AIDS?

HIV is a virus that attacks the immune system. If untreated, a person’s immune system will eventually be completely destroyed.

AIDS refers to a set of symptoms and illnesses that occur at the very final stage of HIV infection.

Nigeria’s HIV/AIDS epidemic is characterized by one of the most rapidly increasing rates of new HIV/AIDS cases in West Africa.

When was HIV/AIDS first reported in Nigeria?

The first two cases of HIV/AIDS in Nigeria were identified in 1985 and were reported at an international AIDS conference in 1986.

In 1987 the Nigerian health sector established the National AIDS Advisory Committee, which was shortly followed by the establishment of the National Expert Advisory Committee on AIDS (NEACA).

The Nigerian Government's response to HIV/AIDS

The Nigerian government was slow to respond to the increasing rates of HIV transmission. It was in 1991 that the Federal Ministry of Health made their first attempt to assess Nigeria's AIDS situation.

The results showed that around 1.8 percent of the population of Nigeria at the time were infected with HIV. Reports also revealed that during the 1990s HIV infected victims rose from 3.8% in 1993 to 4.5% in 1998.

When Olusegun Obasanjo became the president of Nigeria in 1999, HIV prevention, treatment and care became one of the government’s primary concerns.

The President’s Committee on AIDS and the National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA) were created, and in 2001, the government set up a three-year HIV/AIDS Emergency Action Plan (HEAP).

Despite increased efforts to control the epidemic, by 2006 it was estimated that just 10 percent of HIV-infected women and men were receiving antiretroviral therapy and only 7 percent of pregnant women were receiving treatment to reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

In 2010 NACA launched its comprehensive National Strategic Framework to cover 2010 to 2015, which requires an estimated N756 billion to implement.

Challenges facing the fight against HIV/AIDS

Despite being the largest oil producer in Africa and the 12th largest in the world,13 Nigeria is ranked 158 out of 177 on the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Human Poverty Index.

This poor economic position has meant that Nigeria is faced with huge challenges in fighting its HIV and AIDS epidemic.

Also, there is a major lack of awareness still surrounding the virus and how it can be transmitted from an infected person. The stigmatization of infected patients is also considerably high still.

Lifestyle: 5 ways Nigerians are getting HIV/AIDS

Curtailing spread of the disease is a major task for government across the globe.

HIV/AIDS transmission is still alarmingly high in Nigeria.

On Friday 1 December 2017 will be World AIDS Day where awareness will be created about the HIV/AIDS virus, treatment, prevention and ways of being transmitted.

Nigeria has one of the highest percentages of HIV/AIDS patients in the African continent and World AIDS Day is a great opportunity to enlighten people of how HIV/AIDS can be transmitted from an infected person.

1. Anal sex

Having anal sex is an easy way to contract HIV and in Nigeria, a large percentage of those having anal sex are men with other men.

The number of men who have sex with men who are living with HIV in Nigeria is on the increase.

As of 2007, 13.5% of men who have sex with men were living with HIV. By 2016, it had risen to 23%. Men who have sex with men are thought to account for 10% of all new HIV infections in the country.

2.  Sharp objects

Sharing needles or syringes, rinse water, or other equipment used to prepare drugs for injection with someone who has HIV.

About 9% of new HIV infections in Nigeria every year are among people who inject drugs. Women who inject drugs are 7 times more likely to be living with HIV than their male counterparts which are 14% compared to 3%.

3. Oral sex

Oral sex which consists of putting the mouth on the penis, vagina or anus seems to be a sexual act that is becoming popular.

Although the possibility of transmission of HIV during oral sex is extremely rare, it has been said to be theoretically possible if for example if an HIV-positive man ejaculates in his partner’s mouth during oral sex.

A report conducted in 2005 on college students have found that 49% did not know that a woman could contract HIV through oral sex with an infected man.

4. Sex workers

Although HIV awareness is on the increase it is still found that 18.6% of male sex workers and 24.5% of female sex workers in Nigeria are living with HIV. This is 8 times higher than the general population.

Female sex workers are found to have 44.8% getting tested while 17.5% of male sex workers are getting HIV tested. Only 54.7% of male sex workers reported using a condom with their last client compared to 92.9% of female sex workers but both reported low condom use with regular partners.

4. During pregnancy, from mother to child

From mother to child during pregnancy, birth, or breastfeeding. A United Nations report conducted in 2013 shows that 8 out of 10 pregnant women living with HIV do not have access to antiretroviral therapy for their own health.

Also, it showed that 8 out of 10 women or their infants did not receive antiretroviral medicines during breastfeeding to prevent transmission.

5. Receiving blood transfusions, blood products or organ/tissue transplants

This was more common in the early years of HIV, but now the risk is extremely small because of rigorous testing the blood supplied and donated organs and tissues.

In 2006, the national coordinator of National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), Dr. Folake Ayo had admitted that Infected blood causes more than 10 percent of HIV/AIDS infection in Nigeria.

NDDC Speeds-Up Completion Of Ogbia-Nembe Road

BY ANAYO ONUKWUGHA, PORT HARCOURT

The Niger Delta Development Commission, (NDDC), has restated its commitment to the speedy completion of the N24.5 billion, Ogbia-Nembe Road, with a combined length of 25.7-kilometre, in Bayelsa State.

The NDDC Managing Director, Mr Nsima Ekere, inspected ongoing work on the road yesterday in the company of the Executive Director Projects, Engr. Samuel Adjogbe, Bayelsa State representative on the NDDC Board, Prof Nelson Brambaifa, and other directors of the Commission.

Ekere remarked that the road, which has seven bridges and more than 50 culverts across very difficult terrain, would impact 14 communities directly and open up several others to modern development.

He expressed confidence that the project would be ready for commissioning before the end of the year.

The NDDC boss said, “I have been assured by the contractor that the project will be fully completed by December 10. We will come back again to ensure that the project is properly completed.”

Ekere observed that communities in the Niger Delta contribute immensely to the economic well-being of Nigeria and were, therefore, deserving of quality projects.

He said, “I am, indeed, very pleased and satisfied with the quality of work done by the contractor on this project. It is noteworthy that this world class performance was achieved despite the very difficult terrain of the Niger Delta region. The region has a very challenging terrain and that is why projects usually cost more here than in other places.

“To get this project to this level, the contractor had to remove unsuitable materials for as deep as 25 metres in some portions. The project has also seen the use of vertical drains to take away ground water to allow the road to stabilise.”

He stated that the Ogbia-Nembe road was a good demonstration of what could be achieved when development agencies, companies and state governments collaborate. He noted that the project was a worthy partnership between the NDDC and Shell Petroleum Development Company, SPDC.

The NDDC boss declared, “This is an example for other oil companies operating in the Niger Delta. Shell has shown that in addition to its statutory obligation to contribute to the funding of the NDDC, it is also necessary to work with the Commission on specific impactful projects.

“I am sure that other International Oil Companies, IOCs, will feel challenged to toe the line of Shell to provide quality infrastructure for the people of the Niger Delta.”

Ekere, who described the Ogbhia-Nembe road as a model in partnership, with emphasis on quality job delivery, affirmed that henceforth, designs for NDDC projects must be proper and complete before execution

He said, “We must redefine our standards to globally acceptable best practice and compel our contractors to abide by them.”

The NDDC managing director commended the youth leaders in the Niger Delta for their supportive roles and appreciation of the contributions of the NDDC to the development of different parts of the region, especially Bayelsa State.

Ekere appealed to youths in other parts of the Niger Delta to also cooperate with the NDDC to allow it to deliver on its mandate to fast-track the development of Nigeria’s oil-rich region.

He said, “We don’t need the kind of distractions that are coming from certain quarters. We need stability to concentrate and not be distracted by political considerations. I appeal to the politicians to please allow the board and management of the NDDC to work for the benefit of the people. When the time for politics comes, we shall play politics.”

Speaking during the inspection, the Chairman of Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, Central Zone, Mr. Tare Porri, urged the NDDC to focus more on projects that would impact on many people and communities, praising the wisdom in building the Ogbia-Nembe Road.

He said: “We are calling on the NDDC to work with the government and people of Bayelsa state to come up with priority projects that would benefit the collective interests of Ijaw people. We are happy that Nembe is now linked by road and we commend the NDDC for that feat.”

2018 World Cup Draw: “Argentina again?” Two African nations in groups of death and more

by Alexander O. Onukwue

For the third consecutive tournament, Nigeria will play Argentina at the group stages of the 2018 World Cup Finals to be held in Russia next summer.

The draws held on December 1 at the Moscow State Kremlin revealed Nigeria will be in Group D with the two-time champions and runner-ups of the 2014 edition, and will be joined by Croatia and debutants Iceland.

Only at the 1998 Finals in France did Nigeria not meet Argentina at a World Cup. In the four tournaments since Nigeria’s first appearance at the global soccer fiesta in 1994, Nigeria has qualified from the Group stages on two occasions – ’94 and 2014 – but did not make it out of the group from an Argentina group in 2002 and 2010.

Given the number of times both nations have met, it could be argued that Nigeria should now understand better how to prepare for and prosecute a World Cup game against La Albiceleste. A recent 4 – 2 exhibition victory would inspire some confidence, even if that Argentine team was without its talisman, Lionel Messi.

Nigeria’s plan in qualifying from the Group next year could seek to imitate the plan from 2014. At the tournament in Brazil, the Super Eagles qualified as the second best from the Group which included Bosnia, and Iran after nicking a one-goal win over the former and playing out a goalless draw with the latter. However, the opposition in Russia will be considerably tougher as both Croatia and Iceland performed reasonably well in their qualifying games.

Iceland, the smallest nation ever to qualify for the World Cup, topped their group to make it to the finals, following up an impressive debut at Euro 2016 last year where they beat England at the quarter-final stage. Croatia who made their debut at the World Cup in 1998 finishing at third-place boasts A-list players in Europe such as the Real Madrid duo of Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic, Barcelona’s Ivan Rakitic and Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic. They will be looking to bounce back from a poor outing in Brazil where there only win was a 4-0 rout of Cameroon.

Accessing the chances of other African countries, a look across the other groups drawn for the 2018 World Cup show that the continent’s best ranked team, Egypt, in a relatively easier group than the other four teams. Boasting the continent’s best player in Mohammed Salah and with the motivation of a first appearance at the global event in 28 years, they will have much confidence facing the main threat in Group A which will be Luis Suarez and Edison Cavani’s Uruguay. Morocco will have their work cut out against Cristiano Ronaldo and company, as well as 2010 World Champions Spain. North Africa’s third representative, Tunisia, will face England, Belgium and new boys Panama, while Sadio Mane’s Senegal will play Colombia and Japan, the two teams faced by Cote D’Ivoire at the 2014 finals.

A lot of football will come between now and when the hostilities are set to kick off in Moscow next year. But players around the world will now be watchful of their performances and be mindful about not picking up needless injuries. For Nigeria, attention will heighten on players who are performing best for their clubs. The quality of the opposition awaiting the Super Eagles next year should require that every single one of the 23 who eventually makes the plane would be there on form and fitness, ability and, to a lesser extent, contribution to the qualifying campaign.

Perhaps with the exception of Vincent Enyeama; knowing how well he has performed against Lionel Messi at the 2010 and 2014 meets, almost being singularly responsible for keeping the score margins at not more than one goal deficits, should he be recalled to the squad?
