Saraki: Pray for improved economy in 2018 – Senate President

Ashafa felicitates with Senate President, Bukola Saraki at 55

Bukola Saraki, extended his heart-felt wishes to all Nigerians.

President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, has extended his heart felt good wishes to all Nigerians in the New Year, calling on them to pray for a full recovery of the economy in 2018.

In a New Year message signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Bukola Saraki said a strong economy would enable the government to achieve physical development and improved standard of living of the people.

According to The Punch, the President of the Senate noted that most of the problems now threatening the unity , progress and peace of the country were rooted in the poor state of the economy and that there was need for the government and Nigerians to work together in 2018 to ensure the success of policies initiated to rebuild the economy, create employment, attract investment opportunities and make the nation self- sufficient.

He however seeks the co-operation of the people stating that government alone cannot make the economy to work. He said co -operation , prayers and change of attitude on the part of the people would develop the country and make 2018 a more fruitful and beneficial year for the citizenry. “I wish all Nigerians overflowing happiness on this joyful occasion ,” Saraki said.

The end of one year and the beginning of another is always a time that is full of hope. While 2017 was challenging for many Nigerians , we must look back on the year with the knowledge that better days are

All of us deserve a chance to live a better life. This is why the Senate and indeed the 8 th National Assembly will continue to collaborate with the executive to ensure that all the policies and programmes of the present administration targeted at making life more meaningful for the people are realized .

The National Assembly will not spare efforts in passing more laws that will serve as catalyst for our economic stability and growth. Laws that will help make our businesses thrive. Laws that will enhance the creation of jobs and put more money in the pockets of our people ”, he stated.   He wishes Nigerians a happy and blessed 2018.

Health Tips: Here's how much salad you should eat to keep your brain 11 years younger

A new study found that eating greens can protect against memory loss.

If you weren't allowed to leave the dinner table without eating your greens as a kid, you're probably not alone.

We've all known our entire lives that salad is good for you, packing essential nutrients—protein, iron, fiber, and more—into your diet. But we're also willing to bet you didn't know just how good salads are, especially for your brain.

A recent study published in the journal Neurology found that eating one to two servings of leafy greens a day improves your memory and overall cognitive ability.

Martha Clare Morris, Sc.D., a nutritional epidemiologist at Rush University Medical Center, and her colleagues looked at 960 people ages 58 to 99 years old over an average of 4.7 years. Participants completed a questionnaire of how often they ate foods like spinach, salad, and kale, or collards. Those who consumed the most ate around 1.3 servings a day and those who consumed the fewest ate around 0.1 servings a day.

Morris and her team followed up with participants for 10 years and found that the brains of people who ate salads the most were "the equivalent of being 11 years younger in age."

However, Morris' study was observational, meaning there's only a correlation—nothing concrete—between how greens affect your brain. Newsweek also notes that the study doesn't "extend to younger or nonwhite or Hispanic people."

Still, “daily consumption of leafy greens may be a simple and effective way to protect against loss in memory and other cognitive abilities,” Morris told Newsweek

JAMB To Conduct Mock Exams In January

JAMB

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), is to conduct its optional mock examination in January, preparatory to a better examination later in the year.

The board made this disclosure in a statement signed by its Head of Media, Mr Fabian Benjamin and made available on Sunday in Abuja.

The board also reiterated the need for candidates to register on time and ensure that they follow due process in order to avoid avoidable challenges.

“As we prepare for the 2018 examinations, beginning with the optional mock, we urge candidates to register on time, make clear their choices of institutions, disciplines and examination centres in the process.

“Candidates must note that their first choice can be a College of Education, a university, an Innovation Enterprise Institution, a polytechnic or a monotechnic.

“Others include, the Nigerian Defence Academy or the Police Academy.

“We will conduct a better examination, ensure more transparent admission and make more remittances to the government,” stated the statement.

The board, which described 2017 as year of transformation to success with the support of stakeholders, added that 2017 was its most eventful year so far.

“In 2017, the board conducted one of the most transparent, inclusive and acceptable examinations with the least incidence of malpractices.

“We invested significantly in the development of intellectual structures, examination infrastructure and human human resources.

“This will propel more development in 2018 and put the board in the position to compete favourably with any public institution; globally, be it an examination body or service agency.

The board also noted that while it had opened its “entire functionality to public participation and scrutiny”, it had been able to adopt some of the suggestions made by the public, which it said, had helped “to build the new JAMB”.

It promised to sustain and make better the entire process in 2018, noting that the success of its Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) portal helped to achieve success.

“Candidates were exposed to the new admission software to check admission excesses and our aim is to ensure that no candidate is unjustly treated.

“The only way to achieve this was to open the process up for everybody to see who is admitted, with what aggregate score, and who is not and why is he or she was not admitted.

“Also, candidates were able to use the CAPS window to monitor admissions into institutions of choice to ensure that they are not cheated”.

The board added that it would continue to take up its statutory responsibility in order to meet the mandate of the government, which was to bring new ways of generating revenue while also improving service to the public.

“We will continue to do everything possible to support the drive of this administration towards excellence”.

Iran Reportedly Blocks Telegram, Instagram Amid Protests

Instagram

Iran appears to be blocking Telegram and Instagram amid ongoing protests in the country.

Telegram CEO Pavel Durov tweeted Sunday that Iranian authorities were blocking access to the popular messaging app “for the majority of Iranians after our public refusal to shut down … peacefully protesting channels.”

Protests began Thursday in Iran over economic woes plaguing the country, reported CBS News, and people were using Telegram and Instagram to share information and images of the demonstrations. So far, two people have reportedly been killed in the ongoing protests.

Telegram said it did suspend an account on Saturday that was calling for violence against police in Iran during the protests. In a post on Sunday, Durov wrote that the channel has been allowed to reassembled after its admins pledged not to promote violence.

“Yesterday we had to suspend @amadnews, a public channel that started calling its subscribers to use Molotov cocktails and firearms against police,” wrote Durov in a post Sunday. “The admins of the channel reached out to us after the fact, apologizing for breaking our rules and pledging not to promote violence in the future.”

Durov said was unclear whether the block on Telegram in Iran was permanent or temporary. The company didn’t immediately respond to a request for additional comment.

Instagram has also reportedly been block in the country. The Facebook-owned photo sharing app didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ekiti APC Divided As Fayemi’s Elder Sister, Domestic Staff Get Buhari’s Appointments

Fayemi,

The list announcing the appointment of 209 Chairmen and 1,258 members for Federal Government agencies has caused a major division among members of the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State.
It was gathered that members of the party were divided over the “over concentration” of the appointments on the Kayode Fayemi-led caucus of APC in the state.
Some members of the party alleged that Fayemi doctored the list to favour his loyalists in the state.
They alleged that in the board appointments released by the Presidency on Friday, none
of the loyalists of Special Adviser to the Senator Ojudu was among the 24 people appointed in Ekiti State.
Out of the 24 people appointed in Ekiti, they claimed that 18 were from the camp Fayemi, while the camp of the APC Deputy National Chairman (South), Chief Segun Oni and the entire decampees from the PDP got four. The remaining two went to former Governor Niyi Adebayo and Hon Opeyemi Bamidele.
Out of the 18 slots gotten by Fayemi’s camp, they alleged that Fayemi’s elder sister, Mrs Monisola Oloro got one, while Dr (Mrs) Eniola Ajayi, who is already in Hungary as ambassador was appointed too.
One of the party chieftain, Dare Oguntuase, described the list of people from Ekiti State that were appointed into federal as “The Ekiti list of shame.”
Oguntuase, who is one of the Social Media aides of Senator Ojudu said, “The list earlier compiled and worked upon by a Committee of zonalVice Chairmen of the party in which Chief Pius Akinyelure represented the South West, was doctored by the Minister for Steel and Minerals Resources Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi.
He said prominent people such as Alhaji Gani Owolabi, Chief Mrs Okusanya , Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, Prof. Oluwasanmi, Mrs Bunmi Dipo Salami, Princess Omotunde Adelabu, My Omotunde Fajuyi, Dr Orire , Hon Karunwi ,Chief Jide Awe, Chief Taiwo Olatunbosun, Chief Muyiwa Olumilua and many others were on the list.
Oguntuase went further to state that “it was when a Committee of Governors and Ministers were asked to vet the list that Fayemi went behind and doctored the list to include his senior sister, Mrs Oloro, his domestic assistance, Mr Kunle Dada, his friend Ade Eniola Ajayi, who has already been made an Ambassador and many others.”
Checks by our correspondent showed that Oloro is the elder sister to Fayemi and Ajayi had  been appointed as an Ambassador.

Ex-Eagles Keeper Congratulates George Weah

Weah

Ex-Super Eagles keeper, Idah Peterside on Sunday congratulated George Weah, former international star, as President-elect of Liberia.

Weah, 51, former FIFA World player of the year, polled 722,185 votes, representing 61.5 percent to defeat Vice President Joseph Boakai who scored 457,579 or 28. 5 percent.

Peterside, also, former media officer of the Eagles, on the telephone from Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday, that Weah`s victory would open avenues for ex-internationals who want to serve their countries.

“I believe that the victory of George Opong Weah will open doors for some of us that have served our countries to be given the opportunity to serve in other areas,” he said.

Peterside said that Weah`s election was a victory for Liberian football and the people for choosing an ex-international who served the country very well.

“What a day for football and Liberia. I want to thank Liberians for acknowledging that footballers are like national heroes and treasures,” he said.

According to him, most players gave their lives playing for their countries and won honours and glories.

Pharmacists Council constitutes Codeine Control Group

The Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN ) says it will constitute Codeine Control and Other Related Matters Working Group (CCRWG) to sensitise the public on the dangers inherent in codeine consumption.

Mr Elijah Mohammed, Registrar of the Council disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

NAN reports that there has been increasing cases of codeine syrup abuse by mostly youths, with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) contending with raiding and arresting dealers of the illicit drug business in the country.

Mohammed specifically said that the group, which would consist of regulatory bodies and relevant stakeholders, would assist in the implementation of a communication strategy in the pharmacies and the patent and proprietary medicine vendors’ shops in various communities.

The registrar frowned at the large number of Nigerians that are already addicted to some of these medicines damming the consequence.

According to him,  the group will aid in enlightening the society on the dangers associated with the abuse of  preparations containing codeine and other related drugs.

“The strategy will also involve pharmacy screening, monitoring and surveillance and how those addicted can get assistance and be rehabilitated,

“Codeine is an opioid drug similar to morphine and has been approved and accessed over the counter in low doses for relieving patients of symptoms associated with dry cough,

“”The codeine in such preparation, usually in smaller doses, serves as a cough suppressant and relieves pain associated with the stress of coughing,

““However, due to its inherent properties when used in high doses over a long period  it has been associated with dependence and powerful addictive propensity especially when used for recreational purpose,” Elijah noted.

.
Mohammed identified the side effects of codeine to include euphoria, apathy, drowsiness, false sense of belonging among others.

He further added that the addict could withstand pains of various degrees and commit crime which in normal circumstances such individuals would not get involved in.

According to him, on the demand side, there is unhindered access to the preparations by the public due to sudden increase in the number of unregulated vendors selling these products all over the country with more impact on Nigerians in northern part.

Elijah urged manufacturers, importers and distributors of these preparations to display more sense of ethical and moral responsibilities in the production, supply and distribution of these products since there was no proven evidence of cough epidemic in the country.

He noted that the council was currently working with technical groups of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and other relevant stakeholders to institute programs to be driven by CCRWG to help addicts overcome the challenges of addiction.

World football legend emerges Liberia’s President; Mourinho can’t find his magic touch | Here is 2017’s last week winners and losers

This should be very straightforward. No group of persons have been as consistent in repeating public relations disasters month-on-month throughout 2017 as the Buhari administration. There have been some wins this – Ease of Doing business rankings and all – but communication with Nigerians have been absolutely shambolic.

There’s more to be said about them but first, here are the deserved Winners in the last week of 2017.

WINNERS

Davido

As concerts go, the 30BillionConcert could have been better but it did not disappoint in delivering on the expectations of attendees. Wizkid was on stage, and there was a special reunion of the Mo’Hits crew, taking us back to the days of their greatest hits.

Overall, the concert was good enough to attract a certain curious scrawler of tweet trends.

[In case you missed it]: “The Thread: “It was more like a jamboree” | Everything Nigerians hated about Davido’s #30BillionConcert”

George Weah

In 2005, he was deemed uneducated not savvy enough to lead a recovering nation. 12 years later and with a Masters Degree, 51-year-old Weah has become the leader of the 16 million strong West African nation.

https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js

He will be handed over to by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, to facilitate the first democratic transition of power in the country in four decades.

Pep Guardiola

Whatever happens in May 2018, Pep Guardiola will have changed the Premier League. 19 consecutive League victories is unprecedented in England but if anyone could do it, surely it had to be he who last did it at Bayern Munich. City has been so good this half season that if the trophy was given for a calendar year, they would have been Champions of 2017.

Maikanti Baru

The NNPC and Federal Government have made a point of maintaining the pump price of petrol in the country. It has not been successful as the product continues to sell for between N250 and N400.

Yet, Baru can be encouraged for his efforts this week, particularly the Christmas day bust of illegal reservoir operators in Abuja.

Nigeria Stock Exchange

The NSE was listed by S&P Dow Jones as being one of the best five performing stock exchange markets globally. There are questions to be answered as to the Oando PLC audit and the tensions between Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, and suspended DG of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Ibrahim Gwarzo.

LOSERS

Muhammadu Buhari

Who is in charge of the Nigerian government? This has been a relevant question since before President Buhari went on his first medical vacation in January this year. An unenviable catalogue of ridiculous gaffes has exposed his administration as being not under his control.

This week began with a screening of his ‘softer side’ – a horrible waste of time – in the midst of a depressing nationwide fuel crisis and culminates in the appointment of at least 4 dead persons on the boards of agencies. Don’t expect any consequences.

Garba Shehu

Mallam Shehu has defended the release of the list of dead and living appointees, claiming it’s no big deal. But he is terribly wrong because the Nigerian people have no business being told stories about a list compiled in 2015 for political purposes. To do so is to abuse the idea behind constituting a board, namely, a group of trustees who will dutifully oversee bureaucratic affairs and guarantee good performance.

[Read also]: “The Thread: “Buhari is President of both the living and the dead” | TwitterNG reacts to Buhari appointing dead people”

By moving to defend the Buhari’s latest show of incompetence, the professionalism and credibility long ascribed to Mallam Shehu continue to diminish.

Joseph Boakai

He just could not match the enthusiasm that the Liberian people had for George Oppong Weah. After serving as Vice President under Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Mr Boakai represented the face of the establishment but the majority of the 750,000 voters who came out for the runoff were staunchly behind Weah. It should be retirement now for the 72-year-old Boakai

Jose Mourinho

Manchester United have drawn 2017 to an end. Literally.

Mourinho’s men have run out of creative ideas on the pitch and the reality of three successive draws is that it is now definitely impossible to catch their noisy neighbours. Mou has blamed everything from match officials, to the spending power of other clubs – despite £300 spent over 2 seasons – but not himself. Has he lost his dressing room?

Shehu of Borno lauds Buhari’s success against Boko Haram insurgency

The Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar Ibn Garbai, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari, over his unflinching commitments to end Boko Haram insurgency in the country.

Garbai made the commendation when the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj.-Gen. Rogers Nicholas, paid him a courtesy visit in Maiduguri.

He said that Buhari had demonstrated greater political will to end insurgency and address the humanitarian crisis ravaging the northeast region.
Garbai noted that the insurgents had ravaged the state and destroyed vital social and economic activities in the region.

“In the past three years, Maiduguri International Airport was closed down, major roads linking Maiduguri to other places were blocked by the insurgents.
“When President Buhari assumed mantle of leadership, he moved the Military Command and Control Center to Maiduguri.

“The president accorded priority to the provision of logistics and improvement of the welfare of soldiers which motivated them to put in their best and record significant successes against the insurgents.

“He also appointed our people into key government positions,” he said.
Garbai commended the military for their dedication to counter-campaign and pledged his council’s support to the command.

In his remarks, Nicholas said that he was at the palace to introduce himself and condole with the emir over the unfortunate incidents.
He recalled that he started his military career in Bama and served in various locations in Borno, which availed him the opportunity of being conversant with the geography of the state.

“My task is to restore sanity to the northeast. I am here to seek for your support and cooperation, to enable us succeed in our mission”. he added,

2018: UN Chief Issues ‘Alert’ To The World

UN

As year 2017 winds down, UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has issued what he termed “a red alert for the world” ahead of the year 2018.

The UN chief, in a new year message, expressed regret that in 2017, the world went in reverse to the appeal for peace.

He said that when he assumed office one year ago, he had appealed for 2017 to be a year for peace.

Guterres said: “On New Year’s Day 2018, I am not issuing an appeal. I am issuing an alert – a red alert for our world.

“Conflicts have deepened and new dangers have emerged. Global anxieties about nuclear weapons are the highest since the Cold War.

“Climate change is moving faster than we are. Inequalities are growing.

“We see horrific violations of human rights. Nationalism and xenophobia are on the rise”.

As the world begins 2018, the UN chief called for global unity.

Guterres added that he truly believed we could make our world more safe and secure.

“We can settle conflicts, overcome hatred and defend shared values. But we can only do that together,” he said.

The UN chief urged leaders everywhere to make this New Year’s resolution:

“Narrow the gaps. Bridge the divides. Rebuild trust by bringing people together around common goals.”

Guterres, who assumed office on Jan. 1, 2017, stressed that in 2018, “unity is the path” adding, “our future depends on it”.

“I wish you peace and health in 2018. Thank you. Shokran. Xie Xie. Merci. Spasiba. Gracias. Obrigado,” the ninth UN chief concluded.

English Championship side Nottingham Forest announced on Sunday they had sacked manager Mark Warburton after less than nine months in charge at the City Ground.

Forest are 14th in the Championship — the second tier of English football — and have won just one of their past seven league matches.

“Nottingham Forest can confirm that the contracts of Mark Warburton and (assistant) David Weir have been terminated with immediate effect,” the club said in a brief statement on their website.

Academy boss Gary Brazil has been appointed caretaker manager.

The former European champions (1979, 1980) have lost 14 times this season — the joint second-highest number of losses in the division.
