Netflix's Bright: The success of streaming movies is not enough to kill cinema culture

In the future, more people will want to watch movies from the comfort of their homes but going to the cinemans will always be a different experience.

Bright, an urban fantasy movie about a world where orcs, humans, elves and other creatures live together is the latest of Netflix's releases stirring up a storm.

With its straight-to-tv content, Netflix is changing the way the world watches movies and giving cinemas a run for their money.

Its newest big project, Bright stars Will Smith as a Los Angeles Police Department police officer who teams up with a rookie police officer who is an Orc, fighting crime and social ills in a world of both human and mythical creatures.

The film was released worldwide on Netflix on December 22, 2017. Since it became available for streaming, the movie has received mostly negative reviews.

Critics have bashed the writing, cinematography and what they perceive as heavy-handed social commentary that forms a major subplot.

ALSO READ: The 25 worst movies of 2017, according to critics

Guess who doesn’t seem to care about all of this. The only person who matters; The average Netflix viewer.

Netflix is winning, baby

Nielsen disclosed that during Bright’s debut weekend from Dec. 22–24, some 11 million people in the US were watching the film AT ANY GIVEN MINUTE.

About 3.9 million of those viewers were ages 18–34, and 7 million were 18–49. About half, or 56%, of the crowd during the three days were male.

Ratings of the movie by the audience on platforms like Rotten Tomatoes now hover around 90%. One fan wrote in his personal review, "Will Smith is the experienced old hand and the charm. Joel Edgerton (totally hidden in makeup and therefore working twice as hard) is the sympathetic rookie willing to risk it all to prove himself worthy."

"…. And Noomi Rapace (this woman is a force of nature!) plays a force of nature. And … it works. It comes outta nowhere and it works. It's a lot to take in, sure, but zowie. Time will only improve this wine."

Bright was supposed to be Netflix’s first blockbuster movie, as the cast and subject matter may have already suggested.

ALSO READ: The Godfather trilogy is coming to Netflix in January

But the scale of its success has many asking questions about why critics have been so harsh on something that the audience clearly enjoys.

Movies do not enjoy as much success as they used to.

With the rare exception of successful franchise releases and big-bang blockbusters, now for competition, they have on-demand services like Netflix that provide original content at the viewer's fingertips whenever they wish.

Whichever way you look at it, the idea of Netflix making its own blockbusters threatens anyone who is interested in the cinema business.

The reviews do not match the numbers

This is why there is some credence in the conspiracy theory that certain powers that be are influencing the reviews to ensure that Bright fails.

Some believe that vested interests in the cinema space are influencing Bright’s reviews to discourage the audience from watching it and make sure it fails.

In the larger sense, the idea is that if the audience believes that Netflix’s original movies are a waste, then they will stay in the one place where that is built for exhilarating blockbusters— the cinemas.

If this turns out to be true, it really comes across as a hare-brained scheme from an episode of Looney Tunes than something that a corporate enterprise would adopt.

Ironically, while original movie and blockbusters on streaming platforms will threaten the domination of cinemas, the success of movies like Bright is not enough to destroy cinema culture.

Can the cinemas withstand the strength of streaming?

Cinema culture refers to the way of life or practices that exist around the act of going to the cinemas to consume content.

Since the first silent films were made, cinemas have become more than just a place to see movies.

Young and old, going to the cinemas is a restful experience that implies much more than seeing a movie.

There’s food in the mix, social interaction and a sense of leisure that sustains entire industries from tourism to the performing arts.

It is why according to a recent survey, 13 percent of Americans go to the movies about once a month, the US film industry is the leading film market in the world.

That sense of leisure was worth over 10.31 billion dollars in box office revenue in 2016.

That’s big money, enough that Companies like Ticketmaster, Uber and fast food outlets like KFC reap heavy profits from models that they have designed to take advantage of the millions who watch movies across the US every year.

52% of Americans already prefer watching movies at home and streaming platforms like Hulu and Netflix are providing a much-needed alternative.

ALSO READ: Game of Thrones is the most pirated TV show of 2017

However, America’s cinemas are enough of a cultural and economic phenomenon to stay profitable for the next few decades, even if that means a lot of changes will be made.

What is the Nigerian perspective?

In Nigeria, Jason Njoku’s iRoko is the leading movie streaming service.

To be fair, he and other new entrants like may not be able to provide the same competition that Netflix offers, thanks to broadband penetration and the fact that cinema culture is still growing in its earliest stages.

Netflix has also created a presence in Nigeria, but pricing and penetration have precluded it from having a major market presence.

Also, projects like Netflix’s Bright require heavy investment and the best chance of recouping all that money in Nigeria is still the cinemas.

So, yea, FilmOne and the rest of them can rest easy.

Iwobi Disappointed With West Brom Draw, Wishes Arsenal Fans Happy New Year

By Johnny Edward: Super Eagles star Alex Iwobi has expressed his disappointment with Arsenal’s 1-1 Premier League draw against West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Sunday, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

A late penalty in the 89th minute from Jay Rodriguez earned West Brom a point from the game six minutes after Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick had deflected off James McClean into the Baggies net to give Arsenal the lead.

The result means Arsenal are yet to win back-to-back games away from home this season while West Brom are without a win in 19 matches, equalling the longest run in the Premier League since Aston Villa’s sequence ended in January 2016.

Iwobi who returned to the Gunners’ starting line-up in the absence of Mesut Ozil featured for 74 minutes before being taken off for Danny Welbeck.

He however thanked Arsenal fans for their support and wished them a splendid New Year.

“Disappointing To Only Get A Point Out Of Today. Thank You For Your Support This Year. Enjoy Your New Year Celebrations! 🔴⚪ #AFC #17,” Iwobi tweeted after the game.

Arsenal are fifth in the English Premier League table with 38 points from 21 games. They will host Chelsea in their next game at the Emirates on Wednesday with West Brom facing West Ham on Tuesday.

N2.5m Fraud: Ex-Katsina Perm Sec Bags Seven Years Imprisonment

Sule Yusuf Saulawa

KATSINA – Sule Yusuf Saulawa, a one-time Permanent Secretary with the Katsina State Government, was on Friday, sentenced to seven years imprisonment without option of fine by the state high court for ‘Advanced fee fraud’ charge.

INDEPENDENT gathered that the duo, was said to have, sometime in 2015, falsely obtained N2.5 million from one  Alhaji Musa Baba, now late, assuring him of a fertilizer contract from  the state government.

Saulawa was also said to have encouraged Alhaji Baba who was Chairman of Many Agro-Allied and Chemicals Company Nigeria Limited and Diamond Fertilizer Nigeria Limited, to write a proposal seeking for the supply of the said fertilizer.

However, the state government in a letter endorsed by Dr. Mustapha Inuwa, the Secretary to the State Government, and sent to the court, denied the said contract.

In his ruling, Justice Sanusi Tukur, slammed the sentence on Saulawa after finding him guilty of advanced fee fraud charge that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) had brought before the court against Saulawa.

His words, “Saulawa did not deny collecting the money from Alhaji Baba even when he knew that the said contract was a hoax. If you (Saulawa) are not dissatisfied with my judgment, go for appeal court.”

He said the sentence was the minimum allowed under Section 1(1)(a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related offences Act, 2006 and punishable under Section 1(3)of the same Act, which Saulawa’s offence falls under.

The judge noted that neither did Alhaji Baba secure the contract nor did he get his N2.5 million back from Saulawa, prompting him (Alhaji Baba) to petition the EFCC, hence the seven years sentence.

Pulse Exclusive: Why Nigeria has no breakout musician of 2017

Mr. Eazi

No new artist had a national hit record in 2017. Why?

In 2016, Mr Eazi was the breakout star of the Nigerian music industry. The 25-year-old Nigerian born musician rose meteorically within the country, with the speed of lightening.

His record, Skin tight’, featuring Ghanaian singer Efya, became a national hit, opening the gate for his follow-up singles to become anthems. Songs such as ‘Hollup’, Sample you’, and Dance for me’, became huge hits, consolidating his growth.

By December 2016, the singer born Tosin Ajibade, would go on to win the coveted Next Rated award at The Headies in December, and collect the Soundcity MVP Awards for ‘Best New Artist.

Along with Mr Eazi, a new crop of artists also released hit records which went on to become hits. Great examples of the supporting breakout cast include HumblesmithOsinachi’ remix featuring Davido, which announced him as a newcomer. Tekno had also had a great year, and Simi pushed far and beyond to become a music star.

The Problem

Fast forward to 2017, and Nigeria lacked another breakout artist in the mould of Mr Eazi. It’s new year, and looking back, no new artist had a national hit record. None has made a dent on the surface of the game, or climbed into the pop music radar.

“This year has been a rather dull year in music in the upcoming stream,” says Dami Elebe, an On-Air Personality at the Beat 99.9fm. “It's shocking that no one has taken the opportunity to break out and shine through the okay tunes released. Is it possible that the breakthrough star might come in December, yes but for now I feel like so many musicians are not trying to do magic with their own sound rather they are trying to make music sounding like those who made it last year through to this year.

“They see the working formula for someone like a Mr Eazi and throw away their original equation believing that is what the people want. Meanwhile, great music, no matter the sound will break out with just the right amount of push.”

Dami Elebe is talking from the reality of her situation as a broadcaster on radio. The dominance of the mellow, High-life tune with a signature Ghanaian synth (also known as the ‘Pon pon’ sound) has ensured that a comparatively low number of local songs have become hits. Runtown, Tekno, Ycee and Davido are examples of artists who have enjoyed success with the new sound. This development, while it has provided Nigerian music with a new sound structure, has also ensured that numerous artists have abandoned other creative styles, to focus on the trend.

Listening to a wide number of pop artists on peak radio times, there exists a congruent and sometimes monotonous trend in the sound of the music. A look through Playdata radio charts for 2017, will find Ycee’s ‘Juice’, Davido’s ‘Fall’, and Falz’s ‘Jeje’ obeying the ‘Pon pon’ structure. It is representative of the type of music that has become popular with fans.

To cast a darker shade on events, one of the biggest hits on radio this year is surprisingly a song by Puerto Rican musicians titled ‘Despacito’. The record by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee has displaced local hits, spending three weeks as the most played record on Nigerian radio.

“I think the fans are playing the major role,” says DJ Spinall, an award-winning Nigerian disc jockey who operates out of his base in Lagos. “The stakes are really high right now because all the big boys and girls are actively involved and not slowing down anytime soon but in all, I honestly think the fans are fully in charge right now, using social media a tool to voice their opinions and dictate the music.”

For the past five years, the Nigerian music industry has been kept on its toes with the emergence of breakout artists. Sean Tizzle and Burna Boy made 2013 a great year. Runtown and Patoranking climbed onto the radar in 2014, Kiss Daniel, Lil Kesh, Reekado Banks, and Korede Bello were hot in 2015. Last year, Tekno, Mr Eazi, and Humblesmith showed up.

Funding For Talents

The importance of artists emerging every year are numerous. The music culture gets advanced with fresh voices offering a new take on the music. These artists also serve as inspiration for millions of other singers who are inspired by their newfound ‘blown’ status. For the investors, these artists are symbolic success stories. They represent confirmation as return for investment, which encourages more people to fund new talents. This is crucial, seeing the rising cost of breaking a new artist in Nigeria.

Talent manager Obinna Agwu believes that money and the lack of it is a crucial reason why emerging artists have had a difficult time breaking into mainstream. “The cost barrier to breaking into the mainstream has been steadily rising for some years now. And has reached an astronomical level, making it near impossible for a lot of talents, including those signed to labels, to stand a chance.” he says.

In 2016, Nigeria slipped into a recession as the economy contracted 2.06% between April and June. Crude oil sales which account for 70% of government income crashed. With the price of oil falling from highs of about $112 a barrel in 2014 to below $50 in 2016. This led to a spike in inflation with every sector of the country reeling from its effects. The music sector was also affected.

A report by auditing firm Pricewaterhouse Coopers (PwC) in 2015 said revenue from music sales in Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, was $56 million that year, and predicted it would grow to $88 million in 2019. There has been no new report to counter that despite the recession, but investors are feeling the bite of it.

In 2016, popular female drummer, Ara summed it all during an interview with Punch. “The demand rate has dropped and performing fees also. In fact, in order not to lose some of our existing and prospective clients, we have had to reduce our fees these days,” Ara said.

Obinna Agwu thinks the economic climate has played a role too. Artists are required to fund their promotion, and a lack of funds have not helped young talents.

“Because traditional media still plays an outsized role in breaking new artistes, coupled with the prevailing economic climate in the country, payola is a big problem. So basically, the need to put food on the table clearly trumps any altruistic desire to push good music. Also, too many record labels are out there hoping to get lucky with paltry funds and little or no strategy,” Obinna says.

Top-level entertainment promoter and music entrepreneur, Matthew Ohio, echoes these thoughts, highlighting poor strategy as a major issue. “I will put the blame on the record labels. No strategy, too many unprofessional behaviour and no continuity,” he says.

Alternative Success Stories

While there has been no breakout stars so far, 2017 has seen a number of artists consolidate their standing with hits. Small Doctor, a street-hop artist is currently enjoying a good run of form in the West. His single ‘Penalty is currently one of the underground releases taking over. Humblesmith, who also has struggled to score another mainstream hit after ‘Osinachi’, has found measured success with another single, ‘Focus’. He believes his success so far ties into the hard work established acts have put in creating a competitive environment that shuts out new entrants.

“All of us have been working very hard. The system is too competitive, and so when established acts release too much music, everywhere is saturated for new artists. That’s one problem right now,” Humblesmith says.

CEO of Chocolate City Music, M.I Abaga, has a similar opinion on the situation. The rapper believes that the system is rewarding artists who work hard.

“Runtown has had an amazing year. Mr Eazi has solidified his dominance and Wizkid and Davido have traversed the globe. Nigerian music is in a great place. Music business isn't science or a conveyor belt of stars ready to be released and consumed every year on schedule. Most times stars are years in the making and this year we are witnessing the beginning of many future superstars,” he says.

Finding a new solution

What is the solution? How can the current system be disrupted to produce stars? Is the system broken? What roles can everyone involved in the music industry play?

“I can't particularly say why there is no clear cut break out artist this year,” says rising rapper D-Truce.  “But what if we looked at it from a different perspective?  What if we stopped looking for one single break out artist and look at our soundscape from a "class of 2017" perspective, which is a method adopted in the West?

“Case in point; the XXL covers; year in year out they identify budding artists on the rise and put them together as "the class of a certain year" eliminating the "break out artist" train of thought.”

A look through various music platforms will turn up numerous young artists releasing music on a daily basis. The internet is flooded with music from thousands of artists looking to make that big break.

Every month of 2017, Pulse received and published over 150 new songs and videos from emerging acts. These artists are all vying for breakout success, and repeatedly churn out new music. D-Truce has been a regular on Pulse, with over 3 of his projects hosted on the platform. His solution to it includes everyone involved.

“Musicians and industry people have very vital roles to play in helping groom the next generation or artistes by simply identifying those with talent and investing in them, be it financially or by means of partnerships, structuring and providing us with platforms that give us more reach so that our sound and art can grow,” he says.

“OAPs and traditional media folks need to start having the fear of God in their dealings with new artistes, for the culture,” Agwu pleads. “Record labels need to come correct, count the full cost before they get into this business and if their pockets isn’t deep enough, they better fall back and stop wasting the lives of these youngsters.”

While there has been no new breakout artist, there has been some wins within the Nigerian music space for talents. The emergence of a new alternative music culture has become one of the success stories of 2017. This new sound, is also known as “The Soundcloud Generation” due to the availability of their music on the streaming platform.  Championed by a collective of artists including Odunsi The Engine, Tay Iwar, Genio Bambino, Lady Donli, its influence is growing mass gathering pace and feeding a market of millennials seeking diversity in their music.

“Let's us give young stars time to grow,” says M.I Abaga. “So many young musicians are budding. In time we will remember this period as important for our industry.”

Elebe thinks along the same line with M.I. Artists do have a huge role to play because they are the creatives of this generation, serving the country with new music.

“Musicians need to embrace who they are. They need to focus on giving us their own sound,” She says. “They need to stop trying to copy someone else's winning formula in hopes of making it like that person. They need to take the risk and give us what they feel is their own unique way of interpreting what they call music.”

She continues: “Industry practitioners on the other hand need to give newbies a chance. We have become so accustomed to allowing listeners force us to break new music. It shouldn't be so. We should be able to research and find that new sound, that breakthrough act.

“The person might have already released a great body of work and no one has dug deep enough to pull it out of the rough. Not everyone has the PR power but everyone needs a great team that can push them into the right direction, a team that believes in you.”

2018 is already in full swing. Many Nigerian musicians are working on new projects spanning countless albums and EPs.  There’s a debut Mayorkun album on the way, Tekno also has a body of work in the pipeline. Hopefully, as December comes around and we all take stock of the brightest stars of 2018, a newcomer will deservedly shine amongst them.

2018: Attend To Needs With Direct Bearing On Nigerians, Dogara Urges FG

Yakubu Dogara

Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House of Representatives, has reiterated the need for the Federal Government to attend to needs that have direct bearings on the lives of Nigerians.

A statement issued on Sunday by Turaki Hassan, his Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, quoted Dogara as saying that “2018 presents an opportunity for stock taking.

“And a strong resolve to sustain the gains of Nigeria’s exit from economic recession.

“Improvement of the economy, security and welfare of Nigerians must remain our priority in the New Year.

“Although employment generation and wealth creation remain priorities of our All Progressives Congress (APC)-led administration, it is imperative for us to create more employment opportunities for the youth and women in order to underscore our drive for economic recovery and growth.”

Dogara said, “We should also endeavour to attend to those needs that have direct bearing on the lives of the people and dire consequences on our nation, as democracy cannot succeed where poverty thrives.

“On our part in the House of Representatives, we will continue to pass laws that will better the lives of Nigerians, create conducive business environment for investments and secure the lives and properties of Nigerians.”

The speaker, who commended the resilience and determination of Nigerians in the midst of daunting challenges, expressed optimism that better days were ahead.

He urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to sustain the nation’s unity and progress in 2018 and also draw from the lessons of 2017 to strengthen the bonds of unity, solidarity and peace.

Dogara urged Nigerians to continue to demonstrate love and exhibit compassion toward one another by extending hands of support to the less privileged as well as vulnerable members of the society.

“As a people, we must continue to imbibe the spirit of togetherness and love for one another.

“We must also support government at all levels by contributing our quota in the generation of wealth and alleviation of poverty in the land,” he said.

Not Quite A Good Yuletide For Guinness

Guinness

Lagos – It is the yuletide, a time when it is believed Nigerians imbibe much more than any other time of the year. Yet the share price of Nigeria’s second biggest brewer, Guinness is travelling south. This drop is so, despite a return to profit of the maker of the leading stout brand in the country.

After the release of first quarter results in September, the company stock price travelled upwards and rising to N102.5 in a 52 week high from N75.

This represented a 37 per cent jump in the value of the stock. But as of December 29, the stock price has dipped to N94 in a culmination of steady decline since November. Despite the fall in price, the stock has outperformed the market in the last six months, delivering returns of 39 per cent while the All Share Index (ASI) returned 18 per cent.

Data compiled by Bloomberg indicate that the company has a PE ratio of 66.13 to show what investors are willing to pay for a Naira of the earnings of the company.

It also suggests that the stock price may be overvalued and may be in line for correction. This also explains the recent fall in the stock price.

Analysts have had this view since August that the stock will underperform within a twelve months horizon. But shortly after the prognosis, the brewer’s stock price took to flight especially after the announcement of a stock split.

At that time, the stock appreciated by N28.63 or grown 41 per cent to N98.50 on October 3 from N69.87, outperforming the market with a return of 65 per cent in the six months to that date, compared to the markets 39 per cent.

This page had put part of the improvement to the economy exiting the recession and improvements in the manufacturers PMI.  The economy had turned the bend at a 0.55 per cent and the PMI was up to 55.3 for the month of September, the highest reading ever for the predictive metric since 2014 to that date.

Meanwhile, the company improved sales and bottom line in the first quarter ending September. Revenues improved by a third to N29.904 billion from N23 billion achieved in the equivalent period in 2016.

As revenue rose, so did cost of sales by 33 per cent to N19.53 billion from N14.68 billion.

This, however, did not erode gross profit, which buoyed at a healthy 24.4 per cent to N10.37 billion from N8.34 billion.

The gladsome news for the company though is that operating profit jumped by a whopping 287 per cent to N2.65 billion from N685 million.

This helped the company turned the bend from pre-tax losses of N2.2 billion to gains of N41.4 million. Since taxes were avoided in the period, net profit was identical to pre-tax profit at N4 1.4 million compared to losses of N2.23 billion in the equivalent period in 2016.

The transition from red to black in the period under review, suggest that the company is set to do better as the effect of exiting the recession and improvement in the manufacturing sector become more widespread.

In the full year ending June 2017, the company had a positive bottom line relative to the equivalent period in 2016.

Revenues were up 23.5 per cent to N126 billion from N101.97 billion. The spike in revenue was despite the economy still in the trough of recession.

This page had seen it as harbinger of what was to come. The recent results confirm our prognosis.

During the full year, despite a rise in cost of sales by a quarter, to N77.6 billion from N60.1 billion, gross profit improved by 15.6 percent to N48.32 billion from N41.8 billion.

This helped in the significant 130.68 per cent rise of operating profit in the period to N10.18 billion from N4.42 billion. But perhaps the biggest highlights of the result are that pre-tax profit and net profit have turned the bend to positive regions.

While pre-tax profit grew to N2.66 billion from a negative N2.35 billion, net profit jumped to N1.92 billion from a negative N2.02 billion.

In the last financial year, the company announced a split in which shareholders bought five new shares for every 11 at a discount.

The Diageo subsidiary said the split was geared at raising N39.7 billion Naira ($109 m) to help reduce its expensive dollar-denominated debt and to support its volume growth strategy”.

Part of the plan, according to reports, was that Diageo, which owns 54 per cent of the company, was supporting the cash call by converting into equity part of a dollar-denominated loan which it granted Guinness Nigeria at the peak of Nigeria’s currency crisis.

Erotic Story/Mae Wilde: Dangerous Addiction [Episode 47]

The wedding just got even more interesting as the bride and groom to-be cannot take hands off each other. There is a guest that will surprise everyone.

“Yess!! Oh! Fuck!! Yes!!” I moaned as he ravaged my pussy without mercy. He pulled up all the fabric so that he could gain access to my ass where he slapped hard as he thrusted deeply into me. Hitting my pelvis each time.

“More!” I almost screamed out loud and he continued with such ferocity, he had never fucked me like this, always choosing to be gentle with me, I loved that but I love this so much now. I looked into the mirror, looking at myself as I came undone, minute after delicious minute. I wore a strapless gown and so I pulled my breasts out of their hold and squeezed on them.

Holding my nipples each between my thumbs and forefingers my eyes rolling to the back of my head as a result of the immense pleasure I was feeling.

ALSO READ: Dangerous Addiction [Episode 46]

“You like that baby, don’t you?” he growled

“Oh God, yessss!!!” I hissed in return, I felt myself reaching the peak of pleasure, going to far heights and then I felt the crash coming and I wanted to scream my satisfaction out loud but that would be a terrible idea in the long run.

I came, crashing down to earth, my pussy feeling so utterly used, but he kept going, smashing in and out, pulling out for just a moment before ramming back in without warning making my mouth fall agape in pleasurable surprise. He pumped faster than I had ever seen him before he released his load in me, slowing down before he came to a stop, he stayed inside me for a bit perhaps to catch his breath before pulling it out.

“That was different” he said pushing his cock back into his trousers. I stood up to adjust myself as well

“Good different?” I said uncertain what he meant, he shrugged then seeing my alarmed face he said

“Of course” we were just setting ourselves right when the door burst open and Ifueko rushed in looking resplendent in the deep purple gown she had chosen for herself. It was a long gown and I was happy she agreed, she had beautiful legs and she always wanted them shown off but today is my day. I don’t know why she hated long dresses, she looked stunning!

“Can’t you keep it in your pants for a few hours?” she said to Derah giving him a disgusted look. He stood up straight, gave her a pointed look and without saying anything he left. What had happened to my sweet Derah?

“You guys sha” Ifueko said shutting the door while shaking her head.

“That was uncalled for” I muttered, she didn’t respond instead she arched a brow at me as if to say ‘cone again’ it was a challenge and I wasn’t in the mood to get in between Ifueko and Derah’s apparent hatred for each other.

“I was asked to fetch you, your dad is waiting at the foot of the aisle to walk you down” she said pulling down my dress a bit to show more cleavage. When she was satisfied she leaned in and placed a kiss on my lips.

ALSO READ: Dangerous Addiction [Episode 45]

“Of course we are ready when you are, if you aren’t just say the word and I will have everyone out of here” She said against my lips. I chuckled and opened my mouth to kiss her, it was a simple kiss but it still stirred my loins but I guess now was not the time.

“I’m ready Ifueko” I said as I moved back from her and looked at my reflection one last time. She handed me the lipstick to re-apply and then I was completely ready. It was time to marry Derah in front of those who couldn’t make it the first time.

The garden had been set up beautifully, it brought me close to tears, how everyone had rallied around to make this day extra special. I wondered whether it would have all happened this way if Derah and I had waited and if he had properly sought my dad’s permission to marry me.

He had just said his vows when I heard a slight commotion from the audience and people started scrambling about. I peered and I could not believe my eyes, a tall shapely woman walked towards us with long flowing red hair, attached to the front of her was something that looked like a bomb. This was the lady that was at my room at the hospital. This was who was trying to kill me?

The guards were on hand but couldn’t come near her because she had her thumb dangerously close to the button that would set the whole thing off and kill every single one of us. How had they let this happen??!! I heard an audible gasp from Derah and Ogo as they seemed to recognize who it was, who was she? My eyes widened when I saw my brother Ikedichi edge closer to her, my dad stood up and tried to block his path but he walked round him towards the crying woman who had been mumbling something as she came near.

Some other people seemed to recognize her as well and there were audible whispers passing through the crowd. I felt faint and my hands slipped from Derah’s.

“What the fuck is this?!” I heard Ogo say in Derah’s ear

“Did you know she was alive?” he said. Alive? I looked closely at this woman as she came closer only to find that I knew her too! It was Edidiong!! Ikedichi and Derah’s ex-girlfriend, the one who was supposed to have committed suicide. SHE had been trying to kill me? SHE had been the one trying to get Derah not to marry me? SHE had been the one that had attacked Tomisin 6 years ago?

Ikedichi edged close to her, I could see he was numb, he had believed her to be dead as well. His hands were held up in surrender as he moved closer to her.

ALSO READ: Dangerous Addiction [Episode 44]

“Ed, please. Let us talk about this” he began

“How are you alive?” he said, the shock in his voice remained. Derah and Ogo stood in front of me as if to shield me but I wasn’t having it.

“I never died” she said, her voice had changed, it was cold and murderous and she still had her eyes trained on me, tears falling freely on her forehead.

“Someone grab that girl!” I heard Derah’s dad say but that only made her angrier and her thumb moved closer to the button. The audience gasped

“No no no no no!” Ikedichi said cajoling her, his voice had changed to that sweet oily voice he used when he needed something desperately from someone.

“I did everything and he is still marrying her” Edidiong said

“He loves her” was all my brother said and he sounded like he didn’t believe it himself. She growled and brought out a gun with her other hand and trained it at Ikedichi.

“Whoa there!” he chuckled his hand still up in surrender “You would never shoot me” he said but his voice didn’t hold the confidence, her finger was on the trigger all she had to do was pull. People were getting up to leave quietly

“Nobody fucking move!!” she shouted “or I will blow us all up just for the fun of it!!” she said, evil dancing in her eyes. How had she gotten this way, what had Derah done to her?

She turned her attention to where we stood and her eyes fell on Derah’s.

“You ruined my life!” she bellowed at him, tears still falling.

“I have been living and hiding in secret, barely able to make ends meet. You promised me the world and the minute I got pregnant, you left!! Saying you weren’t ready to be married, only for you to turn up a year later with a fiancé and a baby!” she shouted. I turned to look at Derah, his face was impassive, it showed no emotion.

“We can work this out” he said to her in a tone that I didn’t recognize. She laughed a mirthless laugh that chilled me to my bones.

Personality of The Year: The burden of making nominations

PROLOGUE
By Jide Ajani
IT happened again between October and December last year. With no no-go areas, you would expect the arguments and debates by members of Vanguard Board of Editors to be very straight forward. But, as in everything about life, nothing is ever straight forward.

In fact, the ghost of the events of October 2016, which cast a pall of indecisiveness on the sessions to choose Vanguard’s Personality of the Year for that period, refused to be exorcised. Worse, in the light of a manifest drop in the value, content and context of leadership construct in Nigeria, the ghost loomed large, thereby, once again, bringing forth the relevance of the premonition of 1927 by Time editors, “whether sufficiently prominent people could be found in subsequent years to warrant the designation, MAN OF THE YEAR.”

Therefore, the task to locate that ‘sufficiently prominent individual’ who touched the lives of Nigerians, whether for good or for ill, in ways that were so profound as to be voted PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR, confronted the editors once again. Interestingly, this had become an annual ritual and, therefore, would have been expected to be more like a walk in the park. Perish the thought, as Dan Agbese of Newswatch had written.

The sessions of the debate to choose the primus, the PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR, are always enervating and come with tantalising nominations, just as they also tolerate some names of personalities that cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be considered awe-inspiring. The editors have always been guided by a set of values that signposts predictors that engender success.

And talking about predictors that correlate strongly with competence at the top, Harvard Business Review (November/December, 2017), gives us five items: motivations, curiosity, insight, engagement and determination. These, while not captured in the same manner, represent the fulcrum of what Vanguard editors look out for when debating and making arguments for or against nominees.

What motivates an individual to do good and great things? What’s the level of curiosity and insight available to ensure a determined engagement? In the polity, business, religion and sciences, many things happen and steal the limelight. However, a deeper interrogation of the thinking behind and the forces propelling such actions sometimes reveal motives that are at once plebeian and devoid of altruistic intentions.

Therefore, how do you begin to nominate individuals with a profundity of immense relevance to the objective of meeting the set criteria for PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR? Even when you nominate such personalities, how do you get the buy-in of colleagues around the table, some, with their interests. Indeed, the interest of some editors was just to shoot down nominees made by others. Such is the nature of mere mortal man.

For a few others, a tunnel vision was all that motivated their support for or antagonism against a nominee. Yet, for some, the mere mention of some names evoked a nostalgic feeling. However, because there was a job to be done – and done well – names were put forward, names were dropped, names were added; more names were again dropped and a few other names were re-added. These exercise, which commenced on Monday, October 30, 2017, did not conclude until Monday, December 11, 2017 – all of six weeks. Such is the rigour that goes into the debate.

For one, members of the Vanguard Board of Editors are always conscious of the need to elect nominees and vote accordingly with some things in mind: Would the eventual winners pass the integrity test? Would members of the public, while not in total agreement, be substantially convinced about the choice made?

Can any member of the Board go into the open and be able to convince fellow countrymen about the personality(ies) that have been so chosen to be honoured? Does the name of any of the winners come with the dangerous effluvium of public opprobrium? Once these issues are settled, then the voting.

And so, after over six weeks, First Lady, Aisha Buhari, was voted as Vanguard’s PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR for 2017.

In making the argument, members were conscious of the novelty of the choice for 2017. But the facts in support of her eventual and ultimate choice swayed the majority. No matter.

With the choice of winners, the ghost was driven out of the conference room. But because the motivation to again be rigourous in nominating, debating and voting for the prospective winner of the 2018 PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR, there is every possibility that the ghost would again cast its apparition on the wall of the conference room – and the editors would do whatever it takes to drive it out, but never able to exorcise it.

Below is a list of the categories and winners:
Personality of the Year
First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari

Governors of the Year
Okezie Ikpeazu, Abia
Seriake Dickson, Bayelsa
Darius Ishaku, Taraba
Mohammed Abubakar, Bauchi
Umar Ganduje, Kano

Lifetime Achievers

Alabo Tonye Graham-Douglas
Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe
Chief Sunny Ade

Elsewhere in this pullout are facts and strong points which swayed the decision of the editors in favour of these winners.

Buhari: President says Nigerians are very impatient as a people

Buhari says Nigerians are very impatient

President Buhari says Nigerians are very impatient as a people and need to chill.

President Muhammadu Buhari says Nigerians can be very impatient as a people when it comes to addressing national concerns.

The president said this during a nationwide broadcast on New Year's Day, January 1, 2018.

"In respect of political developments, I have kept a close watch on the on-going debate about “Restructuring”, Buhari said.

"No human law or edifice is perfect. Whatever structure we develop must periodically be perfected according to changing circumstances and the country’s socio-economic developments.

"We Nigerians can be very impatient and want to improve our conditions faster than may be possible considering our resources and capabilities. When all the aggregates of nationwide opinions are considered, my firm view is that our problems are more to do with process than structure".

Trial and improvement

Buhari added that with respect to trying out forms of government that work for everyone, there would be no quick fixes.

"We tried the Parliamentary system: we jettisoned it. Now there are shrill cries for a return to the Parliamentary structure. In older democracies, these systems took centuries to evolve so we cannot expect a copied system to fit neatly our purposes. We must give a long period of trial and improvement before the system we have adopted is anywhere near fit for purpose.

ALSO READ: President vows to deal with persons behind fuel scarcity

"However, there is a strong case for a closer look at the cost of government and for the public services long used to extravagance, waste and corruption to change for the better. I assure you that government is ever receptive to ideas which will improve governance and contribute to the country’s peace and stability".

Nigerians have been clamouring for a restructuring of the country on the back of secessionist chants in the Southeast and skirmishes across all other geopolitical zones of the nation.

The president's address also dwelt on plans to improve the economy, infrastructure and tackle the scarcity of petrol that has almost crippled the nation.

President Donald Trump fired off more than 2,500 tweets in 2017. Many of them shook the world. Here are the most memorable ones.

President Donald Trump did a lot of tweeting in 2017.

On many days, Trump's tweeting provided the headline material for his roller-coaster first year as president.

He attacked everyone from former President Barack Obama to actress Meryl Streep. He tweeted about the Russia investigation, "fake news," 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, his travel ban, television hosts, and often what was airing on the "Fox & Friends" morning show in real time.

In total, Trump smashed the "tweet" button more than 2,500 times in 2017. And he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Here are the 60 most outlandish, eye-popping, and bombastic Trump tweets of 2017:

When he chastised "so-called 'Russian hacking'"

When he hit back at Hollywood legend Meryl Streep for calling him out in an acceptance speech

When he asked if we are "living in Nazi Germany?"

The many times he tweeted about his defeated opponent Hillary Clinton

When he went after Democratic Rep. John Lewis, a Civil Rights icon, for announcing he would not attend Trump's inauguration

When he blasted Saturday Night Live for a "not funny" and "terrible" cast

When he posted this photo and spawned a meme

When he promised a "major investigation into VOTER FRAUD"

When he said the reason he hurried to sign the travel ban was because, if he announced days in advance, many "bad 'dudes'" would "rush into our country"

When he weighed in on the debate over whether the travel ban was, in fact, "a BAN"

When he blasted a "so-called judge" — US District Judge James L. Robart — for temporarily blocking his travel ban

When he said the "FAKE NEWS media" was "the enemy of the American people"

All of the times he went after Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal for his service during the Vietnam War

When the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against his travel ban, too

When he claimed Mark Cuban wasn't "smart enough to run for president!"

When he mocked Tom Perez for becoming DNC chair

When he pushed for an investigation into Chuck Schumer's ties to Russia over a photo posted in far-right media

When he baselessly accused former President Barack Obama of wire-tapping Trump Tower: "Bad (or sick) guy"

When he ripped Arnold Schwarzenegger for the demise of his "Apprentice" franchise

When he saw Snoop Dogg shoot someone dressed as Trump in a music video

When he said fired national security adviser Michael Flynn "should ask for immunity"

When he doubled-down on his idea that former President Andrew Jackson, a slave-owner, could have made a deal to prevent the Civil War

When he said fired FBI Director James Comey "better hope that there are no 'tapes'" of their conversations

When he responded to a special counsel being appointed to lead the Russia investigation

When he said Russians "must be laughing at the US"

When he made a historic late-night typo

When he said Kathy Griffin freaked out his 11-year-old son Barron with a photoshoot she did with a gory, Trump-like prop head

When he misrepresented what London Mayor Sadiq Khan said after a terror attack in his city

When he went off about the "TRAVEL BAN," potentially undermining his own lawyers' arguments in court

When he said the "FAKE" mainstream media hates that he uses social media

When he got to give his two cents on Comey's testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee
