‘Ibadan Obaship Tussle To Be Settled Out Of Court Soon’

Court, technician

The apex socio-cultural organisation in Ibadanland, the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes, has expressed confidence that the lingering chieftaincy dispute triggered by the installation of 21 new obas by the Oyo State government will soon be settled out of court judging by the ‘cooperation and enthusiasm’ of the contenders in its reconciliation efforts.

According to statement made available to INDEPENDENT from the governor’s office, the President of the CCII, Chief Yemi Soladoye, said this in an interview with journalists shortly after leading a Truth and Reconciliation Committee to a meeting with the Governor of Oyo State, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, at the Governor’s Office, Ibadan, on Friday.

He was upbeat that an amicable resolution, which, he said, would produce no victor nor vanquished was in the offing in the avowed determination of the CCII and respected elders of the land to end the impasse.

The CCII president said that the TRC would round off its troubleshooting efforts by the end of January and make recommendations, which he said would be satisfactory to the parties concerned.

He said that membership of the TRC, which is being coordinated by the CCII, included representatives of the elders of the land, religious bodies, retired military officers, recognised mogajis, authentic mogajis and a former Senator Rashidi Ladoja.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Saliu Adetunji, had instituted a court action against the state government following the installation of the 21 Obas by the governor; an action, which, he said, did not follow the due process and tradition.

At the Friday’s meeting with the governor were the leaders of the authentic mogajis, Chiefs Olawale Oladoja and Abass Oloko, who have been the arrowheads of the opposition against the installation of the new obas and have been speaking in support of the Olubadan.

Also in attendance were the representatives of Ibadan Elders and retired military personnel on the TRC, Chief Lere Adigun and Gen. Raji Rasaki, respectively.

Soladoye said, “We are happy that all the stakeholders in the matter have seen the need to embrace peace. Judging by the progress we have made so far in the TRC, I can assure you that the matter will soon be settled out of court judging by the cooperation and enthusiasm of the parties.

“We have extracted a firm promise from those concerned on the need to withdraw all the court cases in the overall interest of Ibadanland. We are doing everything possible not to jeorpadise the reconciliation process, hence all the stakeholders have been included in the TRC.

“We have advised the contenders to stop issuing inflammatory statements capable of dragging back the hand of the clock. You will recall that there had been threats and counter-threats by the 21 obas and the authentic mogajis in recent times.

“We have no doubt that the issue will soon become history. In the end there will not be no victor nor vanquished. We are meeting with all the stakeholders and we deemed it appropriate to meet with the governor first. We are happy that he is keen on seeing the matter resolved amicably.”

The CCII said that the attendance of the authentic mogajis at the meeting with the governor should send a positive signal to the people that the TRC was making appreciable progress that would soon bear fruits.

He was upbeat that none of the stakeholders would be dissatisfied or still feel embittered at the end of the reconciliation efforts.

Finance: This photo tells you everything you need to know about Amazon’s relationship to Seattle

null

Amazon has changed downtown Seattle, and businesses such as sex shop Fantasy Unlimited have made efforts to cater to the flood of Amazon employees.

  • Amazon's unparalleled growth over the last decade has changed its hometown of Seattle.
  • That growth is most apparent in Seattle's downtown where nonstop development, much of it driven by Amazon, has transformed the area into hub of tech offices and luxury real estate.
  • Small businesses, like downtown sex shop Fantasy Unlimited, have made efforts to cater to the company with Amazon employee-specific discounts.

Amazon is often said to have swallowed Seattle, forever transforming the city in its image. While that may be an exaggeration, head downtown and it certainly feels like it.

Downtown Seattle, specifically the neighborhoods of South Lake Union and Denny Triangle, have been transformed by Amazon's decision in 2007 to locate its urban campus in the area.

Development by Amazon, as well as the Paul Allen-owned Vulcan and a number of other developers over the last decade has turned a sea of parking lots, warehouses, and motels into gleaming skyscrapers, luxury rental towers, tech offices, and restaurants.

Many Seattleites have taken to calling the neighborhood Amazonia, its 40,000+ workforce Amazombies, and the Amazon-driven changes to the city Amageddon.

That domination has meant that the city — from city council to the smallest businesses — has to cater to Amazon to get in on the boom.

Nowhere was this dynamic more apparent than on the corner of Westlake Avenue and 7th Avenue in South Lake Union, where sex shop Fantasy Unlimited and strip club Little Darlings are trying to weather downtown Seattle's prosperity bomb by appealing directly to Amazonians.

Case in point:

A store clerk at Fantasy Unlimited told Business Insider that the promotion has been around for at least the last two years, and that a number of Amazon employees have come in to use it.

"It works for them, it works for us," she said.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a Little Darlings signboard invites Amazonians to "Come in after work."

When Amazon decided to move downtown, the city paid the majority of $668 million in infrastructure improvements for the area, including a streetcar line for the neighborhood. Last October, a number of city council members signed a joint letter essentially apologizing if it made the $546 billion-dollar e-commerce giant feel "unwelcome" or left out of "regional decisions."

Since 2010, Seattle's downtown neighborhoods have seen an 18% population growth, bringing the current population to over 70,000, the Downtown Seattle Association reported last year. Population growth in Seattle overall is at 10% for the same period.

While many factors may be at play — Google, Facebook, Uber, and others are reportedly setting up shop downtown — there is little doubt that Amazon is the main driver. Amazon has been on a hiring spree for the last decade, growing from 5,000 Seattle-area employees in 2010 to more than 40,000. It has plans to grow to 55,000 in the next several years.

Seattle has benefitted from the partnership.

Washington's economy grew 3.7% in 2016, two and half times the national rate. Other measures like wages, rent, venture capital, and concentration of STEM jobs (science, tech, engineering, and math) are among the highest in the US.

But residents complain of skyrocketing rent and housing prices, gridlocked traffic, a homelessness crisis, and deepening inequality.

FERMA Commences Repairs Of Failed Roads In Imo

FERMA

Owerri – The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency, FERMA, in Imo state says it has commenced vegetation and silt control works along federal highways in the state.

INDEPENDENT gathered that the exercise, which commenced along Ihiala-Orlu-Umuduru federal highways, would be undertaken along all other Trunk “A” roads in the state.

According to the Federal Roads Maintenance Engineer in the state, Mr. Emeka Maduagwu, the Agency intended to make maximum use of the dry period to open up blocked channels and hydraulic structures on federal roads. “We also want to clear thick vegetation that are on the verges of the road to enhance driving visibility and reduce crashes.”

He also said that the Agency had engaged the youths and locals along the route corridors to execute these operations, which he noted, created some sort of employment for them.

Maduagwu further stated that de-silting of hydraulic structures helped the environment to curb flooding as surface run-offs were properly channeled while safe guarding and protecting the service life of the asphaltic pavement.

He said, “FERMA has also commenced repair works along Afor-Enyiogugu-Sam Mbakwe Airport Road. The stretch had been in a state of disrepair for several months, inflicting untold hardship on the road users.”

It was also gathered that the Agency had put in place a work plan that would see her make such major intervention on critically failed stretches on federal roads nationwide. The work plan, he said, is to be executed within the next nine months.

Meanwhile, Maduagwu had advised the engaged youths to make maximum use of the opportunity and render service to the nation, adding that the Agency was working on fashioning out ways to sustain the programme and engage youths who distinguish themselves.

“It is not just about de-silting and vegetation control, while we achieve these, we also want to make sure crime is reduced, unemployed youths are employed to be part of the road maintenance process. The roads remain a very important national asset,” he contended.

One of the indigenes of Afor-Enyiogugu, Mr. Collins Okafor who spoke to INDEPENDENT on site thanked the Federal Government for remembering them, saying that their people have been suffering to pass through the bad area for too long.

Okafor said, “They (FERMA) should also help us by putting gutter so that the work will last.”

Politics: Explosive new book says Trump asked why Medicare can't just cover everyone

Paul ryan donald trump kevin brady

"Why can't Medicare simply cover everyobdy?" Trump asked aides, accoridng to the new book "Fire and Fury" by Michael Wolff.

  • President Donald Trump asked aides why everyone can't be covered under Medicare, according to a new book.
  • The Medicare-for-all idea has been advanced in a bill offered by Sen. Bernie Sanders and Democrats.
  • Trump also reportedly had "little or no interest" in the Obamacare repeal fight.

President Donald Trump reportedly mused to top aides about a healthcare policy that aligns with Bernie Sanders' healthcare platform, according to the explosive new book "Fire and Fury" by author Michael Wolff.

Wolff wrote that when the president was discussing healthcare and the possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act, he asked aides, "Why can't Medicare simply cover everybody?"

The idea of Medicare-for-all has grown popular in recent years among the left wing of the Democratic Party. Sanders introduced last year a bill that would expand the government healthcare program for seniors, drawing support from an array of Democratic senators, including Cory Booker, Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, and 13 others.

Advocates for the idea say expanding Medicare would help to cover nearly all Americans and could allow the government to negotiate prices to bring down costs. Experts disagree about its potential effects.

In the early days of his presidency, Trump promised to "take care of everybody" with his healthcare plan at a lower cost. The eventual repeal and replace bills Republicans advanced would have reduced the number of people with insurance by anywhere from 21 million to 24 million over the next 10 years and caused premiums for many to increase.

In the book, Wolff also wrote that Trump had little interest in the policy side of the healthcare debate and was willing to turn over the reigns on the repeal and replace bill to House Speaker Paul Ryan.

"Trump had little or no interest in the central Republican goal of repealing Obamacare," Wolff said.

Bayern Munich Get Boateng Boost After Injury-Plagued 2017

German Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich will begin the second part of their season boosted by the return to full fitness of Germany defender Jerome Boateng who believes he is close to regaining full fitness following a year of injury problems.

The Germany international endured a stop-start 2017, but has returned to training in the new year at a camp in Doha in buoyant mood.

“At the moment I feel really good. I’d say that I ended 2017 at 80 per cent. If I can get through this week, I’ll be back at 100 per cent.”

A combination of issues, including chest, thigh and muscular problems, restricted Boateng to featuring in only 24 of Bayern’s 52 games last year and he found that hard to take.

“It wasn’t an easy time. It can take almost a year to get back to how you felt before,” he added, referencing the chest operation he underwent in December 2016.

“The strength in my chest was gone, which changed my running style and my whole dynamic. That’s affected other things again.”

But with his return to the training field complete, Boateng was glad to be testing his body once again.

He said of his current workload: “It’s not too much, but it’s certainly enough. You feel like you’ve done something. I think that’s good. That’s how it is in mid-season training.

“I hope now that I can stay consistent and fit.”

Jupp Heynckes’ side resume their Bundesliga campaign with next Friday’s trip to Bayer Leverkusen and the coach had some words of encouragement for Boateng.

“He told me he has no complaints about me at the moment,” the 29-year-old said in quotes reported by the club’s official website.

Akwa Ibom Governor Sacks Commissioner For Stealing

Emmanuel, Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel, has sacked his Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Udo Ekpenyong, from his 21-member state executive council.

The removal of the Commissioner was announced in a statement issued on Friday in Uyo by the State Information and Strategy Commissioner, Mr Charles Udoh.

Though no official reason was given for Ekpenyong’s sack but it was gathered that the removal of the commissioner might not be unnconnected with an alleged financial impropriety.

It was alleged that the commissioner usually deducted some money from the monthly allocations due to the 31 local government areas in the state.

He was also alleged to have flouted the governor’s instruction that no current transition chairman should be allowed to contest local government council election held on Dec. 2, 2017.

Udoh, who described the sack of his colleague as minor change in the State Executive Council, said that the removal was with immediate effect.

The Information Commissioner noted that the governor had expressed appreciation to Ekpenyong for the services he rendered to the state and wished him well in his future endeavour.

Mr Udo Ekpenyong was sworn in as Commissioner on Dec. 1, 2016 following cabinet reshuffle after one year in office.

More than one-third of the elected council chairmen in Akwa Ibom are immediate past transition chairmen.

Tukur Buratai: Group commends COAS over Army/Innoson partnership

Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Tukur Buratai

The Army would acquire 100 variant of utility vehicles from Innoson Motors to support its operations, especially in the northeast.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai recently announced a partnership between the Army and Innoson Motors, an indigenous vehicle manufacturing company, the production of locally made military equipment for the fight against Boko Haram.

In line with the partnership, the Army would acquire 100 variant of utility vehicles from the company to support its operations, especially in the northeast.

In view of this, the South East Revival Group (SERG) has commended the COAS over this move.

Addressing journalists in Abuja, president of the group, Charles Mbani said the partnership further shows the commitment of the Army towards the growth of business in the Southeast.

His words: “The patronage of Innoson Motors Manufacturing Company may appear insignificant, or may be promoted by saboteurs as something to be taken for granted. But we dare say the gains from this singular act are unquantifiable even as they tally with the government's avowal to diversify the economy which involves strengthening the manufacturing sector and saving crucial foreign exchange for the country.

“From our informal interaction with relevant stakeholders, we can already confirm that the deal between the Nigerian Army and Innoson is already deepening local manufacturing. When we make this point it is not about the number of cars that roll off Inosson Motors Manufacturing Company's production line but the multiplier effects that come from such enterprise. We foresee more companies keying into the expansion that the Army's orders portend for Innoson.

ALSO READ: Full story of how Innocent Chukwuma fell out with GTB

“The Army's order is also building the economy as a lot of money has been saved since the vehicles delivered to it were not ordered from abroad. The resources committed to their purchase have been left circulating within our economy. For us, it is a thing of joy that the Nigerian Army has practically sent a strong message about the quality of Made in Nigeria Products. This will rub off on the products from the south-east. The Army has given a lifeline to the hundreds of industries located in our part of the country.

“We must note at this point that the Army also bought its boots and shoes from Aba, so its commitment to seeing industries in our land grow is not mere eye-service but a well calculated attempt to address youth unemployment and their resulting restiveness. It is our firm belief that continuing along this path will leave terrorist groups without idle youths to recruit for making trouble and harassing law-abiding Nigerians,” he added.

Buratai had said that the Army would partner with the company in the modification and production of other military equipment, including armoured fighting vehicles.

He said so far, the army had already acquired 40 vehicles from the company after it donated three vehicles to the Theatre Command of the Operation Lafiya Dole.

Strategy: Meet the 18-year-old entrepreneur making a fortune selling rare sneakers to celebrities

null

Benjamin Kickz, an 18-year-old entrepreneur who sells incredibly rare sneakers to celebrities, sat down with Business Insider to discuss how he does it all.

Benjamin Kickz, an 18-year-old entrepreneur who sells incredibly rare sneakers to celebrities, sat down with Business Insider to discuss how he does it all. The following is a transcript of the video.

Benjamin Kickz: My name is Benjamin Kickz and I'm 18 years old and I get sneakers for a lot of celebrities and also sell them on my website to the public.

I got into sneakers at 13, so like, 5 years ago, but I really started selling them heavy at 15. Basically what made me get into buying and selling shoes was because my mom bought me this one shoe, the LeBron 9 Galaxys, and everyone was like “oh this is the wave.” I just felt like I had the sauce, so I just started buying shoes.

The first sneakers I ever bought was either the Galaxy Foams or the Milo 7s. And then my dad was like “oh, you must be crazy, you're out of your mind.” And then I sold them for $1,000. He was like “oh, so you found someone just as dumb as you.”

Basically, I started off with DJ Khaled cause he was the first celebrity that I sold sneakers to. Then he introduced me to a bunch of other people like P. Diddy and French Montana and all of them.

Before he had a Snapchat, we would just hang out all the time and do stuff. Then he made a Snapchat which obviously went viral I'm pretty sure we all know.

And then from there, he just started posting Snapchats of stuff we always use to do. And people used to think it was funny and not normal but it was regular stuff we did.So he put me on through Snapchat basically and then just helped my business. How's business, you know, it's boomin'.

A lot of my clients are in the music industry but I guess it's because I was always into hip-hop as a kid, like, that's all I listened to. After DJ Khaled, he introduced me to a bunch of other artists, so I guess it just went from there. Athletes too but I'm not into sports as much I'm into hip-hop. Some of my favorite artists are like Migos, Drake, Future, Lil Wayne, obviously.

Manny: What is it like to hang and party with Drake?

Benjamin: I mean, I don't think he's like how he is in his music because I've never been with him when he's in his feelings, so I don't know. But like … he's cool, he's mad cool.

Manny: So out of all those artists who are your biggest customers?

Benjamin: Probably P. Diddy. Like, he just buys like, phew. Yeah, very, very bulk.

Manny: Tell me about what you think about the Under Armour shoes.

I think the Under Armour shoes are amazing, I love them. I got a pair for myself, personally. The Steph Curry ones. I think the Big Baller Brand shoes, I think they're dope. Everyone's saying they're too expensive for like $500 retail price. Personally, I think it's a little high, but the shoe's dope and obviously they're some of the best players out right now so, you know, do your thing.

Manny: They're getting a lot of props for just taking their own lane and making their own shoe. Is that something you could see yourself getting into?

Benjamin: Yeah, most definitely. I mean, I wouldn't mind a contract depending on like, who it would be, but I would definitely do my own shoe also. I have some things in the making, but I don't know, we have to put it all together, you know?

Manny: What's your merch? What's your brand?

Benjamin: Oh, Boomin'. This.

Manny: How's that doing?

Benjamin: Boomin'.

Islam preaches love – Wamakko

Sen. Aliyu Wamakko (APC-Sokoto) said on Friday that Islam is not a religion of violence but that which preaches peace and love.

Wamakko spoke at his resident in Sokoto when the Global Chief Operations Officer of Wisal Television Channels, Sheikh Taufiq Musery, paid him a courtesy visit.

He said it was wrong that Muslims globally are tagged fundamentalists and as those who perpetrate violence.

Wamakko, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Basic and Secondary Education, further expressed happiness that Islam was fast spreading in the U.S., UK, Asia, Europe and other parts of the world.

He promised to support the media outfit to ensure the success of its operations in Nigeria.

He noted that the Hausa channel of the outfit was doing a great job of propagating Islamic religion, thereby bolstering its growth and development in Nigeria and beyond.

Earlier, Musery, accompanied by a renowned Islamic Cleric, Dr Mansur Sokoto, extolled the contributions of Wamakko to Islam over the last four decades.

Musery, an Imam of the Holy Mosque in Madinah, underscored the indispensable roles of the media in contemporary global affairs, promising that the station will make meaningful contribution to the growth and development of Islam.

Abdulfatah Ahmed

The Kwara Government has promoted to 13,931 teachers across the 16 local governments area of the state.

Alhaji Jimoh Lambe, the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), disclosed this on Friday in Ilorin during the presentation of the promotion letters.

While presenting the promotion letters to the Education Secretaries from each local government, Lambe expressed gratitude to the state governor for the approval of the 2015 and 2016 promotion letters.

According to him, the promotion is long overdue, adding that the release of the letters will bring joy and succour to the beneficiaries and boost their morale to work.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the present administration towards the development of education, especially at the grass-root despite the current financial constraint.

He also urged staff of the board to be more dedicated and hard working in the discharge of their statutory responsibilities.

According to him, the present administration under the leadership of Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed will continue to recognise and reward hard-work for improved productivity.

Responding on behalf of other educational secretaries, the Education Secretary, Ekiti Local Government Council of the state,

Mr Felix Olusola, thanked the state government for the gesture.
He described the presentation of promotion letters as New Year gifts.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the governor had earlier directed the SUBEB to release all outstanding promotion letters to primary and junior secondary school teachers in the state.

Okezie Ikpeazu: Gov gives condition for re-election in 2019

Governor of Abia state, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu

Ikpeazu said that since leadership is linked to achievements in office, he can be sure of matching any other candidate after completing the projects.

Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia, says he would only seek re-election in 2019, after successful completion of projects initiated by his administration across the state.

Ikpeazu disclosed this while speaking in a political programme “Osinachi”, at the Broadcasting Corporation of Abia monitored in Aba on Friday.

“There are a few things which I am saying if we are able to finish by the grace of God, in the future I would think that we can answer the call to seek for re-election in 2019,’’ he said.

He named some of the ongoing projects as the construction of Ifeobara basin, the reconstruction of Arochukwu road, the Osisioma interchange as well as the revival of the School of Nursing in Aba.

Ikpeazu said that since leadership is linked to achievements in office, he can be sure of matching any other candidate after completing the projects.

He said that government had so far invested about N325 million towards upgrading facilities at the Enyimba Stadium with a view to making it “world class’’.

Ikpeazu said two billion naira had been released to Setraco Construction Company for the reconstruction of the Aba-Port Harcourt road, adding that his administration had also done well in promoting made-in-Abia goods by patronising the products.

He said that his administration had also recorded successes in its agricultural projects especially in Aba which was aimed at improving the life of the people.

Mohammed Bindow: Gov seeks financial support to families of fallen heroes

The Adamawa state governor- Mohammed Jibrilla

Bindow made the appeal at the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Emblem Appeal Week in Yola.

Gov. Mohammed Bindow of Adamawa on Friday urged Nigerians to give financial support to families of fallen heroes.

Bindow made the appeal at the 2018 Armed Forces Remembrance Day and Emblem Appeal Week in Yola.

He said that the gallant sacrifices of both the fallen and the living veterans had kept Nigeria.

“If not for their struggle, we would not have been enjoying this country.’’

The governor, while announcing contribution of N5 million  on behalf of the state government to the legion, urged the general public to redeem all their past pledges to it.

Earlier, a retired military officer, Bashir Babayola said that their concern was the plight of widows and orphans of the fallen heroes.

Babayola, who is also the chairman of the state chapter of the legion, said presently, the legion had no source of income apart from little support that usually came during the emblem week annually.

According to him, they depend entirely on public pledges during their annual events.

The chairman appealed to the governor, who is also their patron to approve the monthly allocation of N500, 000 to the legion.

He assured the governor of judicious use of the funds to better the living condition of the widows, orphans and the crippled members.

Tech: The Weinstein Company is reportedly close to being sold — here's who's bidding and what they'll likely pay

(L-R) Bob and Harvey Weinstein.

The highest bid for The Weinstein Company is reportedly $500 million, which means shareholders may lose all their equity on the deal.

  • The Weinstein Company could reportedly be sold for $500 million.
  • The small figure is in the wake of the scandal surrounding its cofounder, Harvey Weinstein, who was fired after sexual misconduct allegations were revealed last year.
  • Six companies are reportedly in the running.

Following a December 22 deadline, The Weinstein Company is currently in the process of being sold and has narrowed down the potential buyers to six companies, according to The Wall Street Journal.

However, in the wake of the colossal controversy surrounding the company following the sexual assault and harassment allegations against its cofounder Harvey Weinstein, who was fired in October, whichever company takes TWC will be getting it for a bargain price.

The Wall Street Journal reports that the company could go for less than $500 million and its shareholders may lose all of their equity.

TWC received about 20 offers and its board of directors has narrowed down the list to six potential buyers, which includes Lionsgate and production company Killer Content, which is working with filmmaker/philanthropist Abigail Disney, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The top bid of $500 million is an underwhelming figure for the company that Harvey and brother Bob Weinstein launched in 2005 after leaving the previous company they founded, Miramax, which became a mega power in the independent film world in the 1990s.

With the company reportedly carrying $500 million-plus in debt, the only thing that’s attractive is its library (which includes Quentin Tarantino movies “Django Unchained,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and “The Hateful Eight”), but it’s clearly not as lucrative as it once was.

“A company’s library of titles depreciates faster than they used to,” Hal Vogel, media analyst and founder of Vogel Capital Management told Business Insider. “With so much production on the streaming side now, older libraries don’t trade for so much.”

Then there’s also the legal bills against Harvey Weinstein and the company that the buyer will have to take on. Weinstein’s alleged sexual misconduct over three decades has led to lawsuits against TWC and Weinstein being the subject of criminal investigations.

“One of the companies will eventually win out, but money is only one consideration,” Vogel said. “You can expect that the litigation will come out for years to come. It’s going to be costly and it’s going to drag on.”

The Weinstein Company had no comment for this story.
