Benfica Join Race To Sign Ebuehi

By Adeboye Amosu: Portuguese club, Benfica, have joined the race to sign Nigeria right-back, Tryonne Ebuehi, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The 22-year-old who is currently in the books of Dutch club ADO Den Haag will be a free agent this summer and has also been linked with a move to English Championship outfit Norwich City.

ADO Dn Haag have also offered the defender who is expected to be part of Nigeria’s squad to the 2018 World Cup in Russia a new contract.

However, according to a report in Portuguese online outlet, Ojogo.pt Benfica are prepared to swoop for the defender in the summer.

Benfica, according to the report, have sent scouts to watch Ebuehi in action for ADO De Haag this season, and got a favourable assessment on the player.

“In favour of the 22-year-old defender are some characteristics assessed by the scouting team, such as good defensive placement, physical ability (has 1.87m) and ease in offensive support, but also the fact of being at the end of contract,”reads the scouting report posted on the website.

Born in the Netherlands, Ebuehi opted to play for Nigeria in 2017 and has two caps for the three-time African champions.

Ondo PDP To Recall Rep For Decamping To APC

PDP

The People Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo state at the weekend vowed to recall a member of the House of Representatives, Mayowa Akinfolarin.

The PDP said it would soon commence the process of recalling the lawmaker for decamping to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akinfolarin is the representative of Odigbo/Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo Federal Constituency in the National Assembly.

The lawmaker dumped the PDP on which platform he was elected for the APC in December 2017.

Eddy Olafeso, the National Vice-Chairman of the party, said Akinfolarin would not be allowed to continue to enjoy the mandate he got on the platform of the party.

Olafeso spoke in Akure, the state capital, after a meeting of the PDP leaders from the Southern Senatorial District of the state.

“Mayowa Akinfolarin will be replaced. There is no going back on recalling him. The south is the stronghold of the PDP in the state.

“The party will soon initiate the process of his recall. He called all PDP leaders evil. We detest that.

“He took our sweat and blood. He then walked away. He thinks he can pee on our heads.

“We are going to challenge him and recall him. He took the mandate of the people and walked away with it. He will hear from us,” Olafeso said.

IDPs: Customs distributes rice worth N3.79bn to displaced persons in Northeast

Customs distributes rice worth N3.79bn to displaced persons in Northeast

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Joseph Attah, made the disclosure in Abuja on Sunday during an interview with newsmen.

The Nigeria Customs Service has distributed 252,666 (50kg) bags of rice worth N3.79 bn in the last 22 months to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the Northeast and Benin.

The Public Relations Officer of the Service, Mr Joseph Attah, made the disclosure in Abuja on Sunday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Attah said that the exercise was in compliance with the Presidential directive given in January, 2016, to the Service to donate all seized perishable items to Nigerians affected by the insurgency in the Northeast.

According to him, in February 2016, the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), retired Col. Hameed Ali, inaugurated a National Logistics Committee (NLC) with members drawn from Customs, Nigerian Army and Nigeria Air Force.

He said the committee also had members from Nigeria Police, FRSC, NSCDC, NAFDAC, NTA, NAN, NUJ and Red Cross.

He said that the committee was mandated to transfer all seized rice and other relief items to IDPs in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa and Edo States.

Attah said that to ensure security and transparency in the process, the items were transported from the various government warehouses by the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport to various states in the Northeast and Edo.

He said, ‘‘252, 666 (50kg) bags of rice worth N3.79 billion were distributed to the IDPs in the Northeast and Benin in the last 22 months.

‘‘Likewise, 82,140 25 litres of jerry cans worth over N985 million, 19,491 cartoons of soap worth N52,625,700 and other items such as bales of used clothes, cartoons of spaghetti,25 litres jerry cans of palm oil, cartoons of slippers, bags of footwear, dozens of children shirts were also distributed.

“Dozens of female wears, dozens of female hijab, cartoons of mosquito coil, sacks of school bags, branded wrapper, bales of praying mats.

“Rolls of textile, cartons of sugar among others in their thousands were also distributed to the IDPs.

‘‘Despite the tonnes of rice and other relief items already transferred to the IDPs , NCS warehouses across the country are still filled with rice.

‘‘This only shows that the sustained onslaught against unrepentant rice smugglers has continued to yield positive results,” Attah said.

He said that the items in the warehouses were either awaiting court forfeiture to the Federal Government or has already been allocated to government of the affected state who pays the Army Corps of Transport and Logistics for transportation to the IDPs.

‘‘Eventually, the seized rice and other perishable items presently in the warehouses will be given to fellow Nigerians affected by the unfortunate insurgency in the Northeast.”

On e-auction, Attah said that so far 646 numbers of vehicles had been won with over N272 million generated as revenue for the Federal Government.

He said that since the commencement of the e-auction process, 5,454 persons had registered while 4,865 actually nodded and 646 emerged winners.

“The introduction of the e-auction process was based on the need to eliminate abuses associated with manual process of the past.

‘‘This is to ensure maximum revenue from the process while still providing equal opportunities to all interested Nigerians to log on to the e-auction portal and bid for any items they wish,” Attah said.

He said that the NCS would continue to be careful in handling goods at its warehouses so as not to avoid needless litigations by claimants as a result of illegal disposal.

Attah recalled that the Customs’ CGC launched the e-auction platform on July 3, 2017.

Tech: What your nightly routine should look like, according to science

null

Wondering when to stop drinking coffee and using screens to avoid messing with your sleep? How often you should wash your sheets? We've got you covered.

Wondering when to stop drinking coffee and using screens to avoid messing with your sleep? How frequently you should wash your sheets?

Scientists have been looking for answers to these questions too.

You can use their answers to guide many of the decisions you make on a nightly basis, from what you drink at night to how often you do laundry.

Watch your mid-afternoon caffeine intake.

The Mayo Clinic advises adults to limit their caffeine intake to 400 mg per day, or the equivalent of about two to three coffees. Caffeine content can differ dramatically based on the type of coffee, however. Just 1.5 cups of Starbucks contains 400 mg of caffeine, while you'd need four cups of McDonald's drip coffee to equal that amount.

Like too much of anything, excess caffeine comes with risks, including migraine headaches, irritability, upset stomach, and even muscle tremors — so it's important to know how much you're getting.

On your commute home, don't agonize over germs.

A team of geneticists made headlines in 2015 for a mission to document all the bacteria on the New York City subway. They turned up nearly 600 different species of microbes crawling around on all those greasy rails.

Before whipping out the hand sanitizer and tissues, keep this in mind: Almost all of the germs they found were completely harmless. In fact, there's evidence to suggest that regular exposure to germs helps keep our immune systems healthy by priming it to more easily recognize dangerous microbes in the future. The idea could partially explain why children who grow up around animals and in rural areas are less likely to develop conditions like asthma than children who don't.

Skip happy hour, or go simply for the food and company.

Alcohol is one of the world's most widely consumed drugs, but drinking even small amounts — as little as one glass of wine or beer a day — has been linked with a host of negative side effects, including cancer. In November, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, a group of the nation's top cancer doctors, released an unprecedented warning in which it told Americans to drink less.

"ASCO believes that a proactive stance by the Society to minimize excessive exposure to alcohol has important implications for cancer prevention," the statement said.

So at your next happy-hour event, consider skipping the booze or doing something else.

Stay hydrated.

Staying hydrated is vital. Our bodies are 60% water, and not getting enough can lead to headaches, fatigue, and even overeating. Still, contrary to popular opinion, you don't necessarily need to drink eight glasses of water a day.

Instead, your daily hydration requirement can change based on several factors, from how much you worked out that day to the weather outside. Certain foods are also a good water source, so eating more of them may mean you need to drink less. Cauliflower, eggplant, peppers, and spinach are all 92% water. Carrots, green peas, and even white potatoes are more than 79%.

Take breaks from screens to avoid eye strain.

Many of us go from starting at computers to staring at our phones, and as a result our eyes are often dry, itchy, blurry, or irritated. Ophthalmologists call this condition "digital eyestrain." To avoid it, make sure you're drinking (and blinking) enough and avoid reading your phone under the glare of a lamp. You can also practice what's known as the 20-20-20 rule.

Every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will allow your eyes to rest, Rahul Khurana, the clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmologists told my colleague Kevin Loria.

If you go out for dinner, plan on taking up to a third of it home.

The baseline portion sizes of our snacks and meals have ballooned over the past 40 years — even the plates and cups we serve them on have gotten noticeably bigger.

The average size of many of our foods — whether fast food, sit-down meals, or even items from the grocery store — has grown by as much as 138% since the 1970s, according to data from the American Journal of Public Health, the Journal of Nutrition, and the Journal of the American Medical Association. So be mindful of portion sizes, and if you're eating out, consider taking anywhere from a third to half of it to go.

Put away screens for at least 30 minutes before bedtime.

The blue light that illuminates our screens also tamps down on the production of melatonin, a key hormone our brains use to tell our bodies to start preparing for sleep. That's something you don't want to be doing at night, especially right when you're heading to bed. Experts recommend at least 30 minutes of no-screen time before bedtime.

Before you tuck in for the night, make sure your sheets are clean.

Our beds can blossom into a "botanical park" of bacteria and fungus in as little as a week, New York University microbiologist Philip Tierno told Business Insider.

The combination of sweat, animal dander, pollen, soil, lint, dust-mite debris, and plenty of other things is enough to make anyone sick, let alone someone with allergies. So clean your sheets at least once every seven days.

Nigerian Army confirms killing of suspected notorious kidnapper – Don Waney

The authorities of 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt wish to inform the peace loving people of Omoku in ONELGA in particular, Rivers State and indeed the entire good people of Niger Delta in general that the notorious cult leader, kidnap kingpin and mass murderer Don Waney is dead.

This was made known by the deputy director Army Public Relations, Colonel AMINU ILIYASU on Sunday.

Recall that in the early hours of Monday 20th November 2017, troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army acting on credible information from some patriotic members of the public raided the evil Don Waney enclave in Omoku, ONELGA Rivers State where shocking discoveries of assorted weapons, dynamites, bags of suspected cannabis, full military camouflage uniforms, military boots, military communication radios, 10 human skulls and human bones were discovered. Additionally, in continuation of the operation on Tuesday 21st November 2017, the troops also exhumed decomposing bodies of some of his victims in his shrine in the glaring eyes of the media who were invited to witness first hand.

Perhaps not satisfied with the numerous lives of innocent citizens he took, Don Waney masterminded the despicable New Year day mayhem in Omoku in which he led his notorious gang of criminals to murder 23 peace loving citizens of Omoku when they were returning from Cross Over Service at about 1:30am on Monday 1st January 2018.

Intense surveillance activities on him and his gang by the Department of State Services (DSS) Rivers State Command revealed that after committing these atrocities he relocated to a neighbourhood within Enugu Town in Enugu State where he rented an apartment and started living among unsuspecting neighbours within the community.

From the relative safety of his newly-rented apartment, Don Waney was already perfecting plans to wrought another mayhem in Omoku in which he was to attack churches, schools, Army and Police locations and the RESIDENCES of the generality of the already traumatized people of Omoku. However, following his successful geo-location to his new Enugu neighbourhood hideout by the DSS Rivers State Command, a combined team of troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu and personnel of DSS Rivers State Command raided the hideout to arrest him and his other accomplices.

Incidentally on sensing that the combine team were closing in on his residence, Don Waney, his Second- in- Command (Ikechukwu Adiele) and another gang member (Lucky Ode) attempted to escape through the back exit of the apartment and were shot down by the eagle eyed troops in the process. One of them died on the spot while the other 2 who sustained gun shot wounds eventually died while being evacuated for medical attention.

The remains of Don Waney and his cohorts were brought back to Port Harcourt Rivers State by the combine team and handed over to the Rivers State Police Command for further action.

To this end, the authorities of 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt wishes to use this opportunity to extend their condolences to the families of all the victims of the evil Don Waney and his gang. We also wish to solicit your further cooperation in volunteering useful information to track down and arrest the remaining gang members so as to bring them to justice for a peaceful, prosperous and secured Omoku community, ONELGA, Rivers State and the entire Niger Delta region.

You are kindly requested to disseminate this information to the general public. Thank you for your usual cooperation.

Politics: Steve Bannon issues lengthy apology walking back his explosive comments in new tell-all book

steve bannon

  • Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon issued a long statement to the news website Axios apologizing for the bombshell comments he made in the new tell-all, "Fire & Fury: Inside the Trump White House."
  • Bannon was quoted eviscerating President Donald Trump, his son Donald Trump Jr., his daughter, Ivanka Trump, and his son-in-law Jared Kushner.
  • Bannon walked back many of his remarks on Sunday about the Russia investigation, Trump, and his family.

Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon made a lengthy statement apologizing for the explosive comments he made that were quoted in Michael Wolff's new book, "Fire & Fury: Inside the Trump White House."

The book paints President Donald Trump and his administration in an unflattering light and has dominated headlines all week, while also stoking Trump's and his allies' ire.

In a statement to Axios on Sunday, Bannon expressed "regret" to Trump and walked back comments he made about Trump's oldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

In the book, Bannon was quoted as calling Trump Jr.'s meeting with a Russian lawyer and several others in June 2016 "treasonous" and "unpatriotic."

He added that there was "zero" chance Trump Jr. "did not walk these jumos up to his father's office on the 26th floor."

Bannon apologized Sunday, saying that Trump Jr. "is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around."

He added that his comments about the Russia meeting were directed towards former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who also attended the meeting along with Trump Jr. and Kushner. Bannon said Manafort was "a seasoned campaign professional with experience and knowledge of how the Russians operate. He should have known they are duplicitous, cunning, and not our friends."

He also touched on a frequent conservative talking point vis-a-vis the Russia investigation and whether the Trump campaign colluded with Moscow to tilt the election in his favor.

Echoing Trump's and his allies' earlier comments, Bannon suggested former Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton was the one who colluded with Russia and pointed to the 2010 Uranium One deal as evidence.

After saying his comments about the Russia meeting was derived from his own experience as a naval officer, Bannon added that they were prompted in part by "making films about Reagan's war against the Soviets and Hillary Clinton's involvement in selling uranium to them."

He called the FBI's Russia investigation "ridiculous" and a "witch hunt," and said there was no collusion.

"To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr.," Bannon said.

Bannon, who is also head of the far-right Breitbart News, doubled down on his backing for Trump as well, saying his support was "unwavering … as I have shown daily in my national radio broadcasts, on the pages of Breitbart News and in speeches and appearances from Tokyo and Hong Kong to Arizona and Alabama."

Bannon's apology came after Trump went on a scorched-earth offensive against him in the wake of his comments.

Calling Bannon "Sloppy Steve," Trump said Bannon had "lost his mind" and was "only in it for himself."

"Michael Wolff is a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book," Trump later added on Twitter. "He used Sloppy Steve Bannon, who cried when he got fired and begged for his job."

Bannon praised Trump on Sunday, saying he was the only candidate who was capable of defeating "the Clinton apparatus," referring to Hillary Clinton and her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr. has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency," Bannon concluded.

Stolen ‘World’s Most Expensive’ Volka Bottle Found Empty At Construction Site

Vodka

An exclusive bottle of vodka worth $US1.2 million ($A1.7 million) that had recently been stolen from a bar in Copenhagen was found empty at a construction site outside the city, Danish police have reported.

The rare bottle from Russo Baltique, is a unique piece made with 3kg of gold and silver wrapped in a leather band printed and is believed to be the most expensive in the world.

On first inspection the pricey bottle was not damaged, but the liquid contents were, however, missing.

“The bottle is now in police custody, it appears to be intact and will be examined,” said Copenhagen police on their official Twitter account.

Bar owner Brian Ingberg, who claims his 12,000-strong collection of vodka bottles is the largest in the world, said the Russo Baltique had been part of a six-month exhibition at his bar’s basement museum.

He said the bottle had been loaned by Latvian car manufacturer Leonard F. Yankelovich.

“It’s the bottle that’s valuable, we can refill it with vodka in Russia,” Ingberg told local media.

The robbery occurred early on Tuesday and was carried out by two hooded people who were captured by security cameras as they opened the bar’s shutters and entered the museum with a copy of the key.

N60m Pension Fund: Ondo Permanent Secretary Arrested

Pensioners

Olipede Ezekiel Dare, the Permanent Secretary of the Ondo State Local Government Pensions Board, was at the weekend arrested and whisked away by the operatives of the Special Frauds Unit (SFU) of the Nigeria Police Force.

Sources attributed Olipede’s arrest to the series of fraud-related cases he was allegedly involved in when he was a director at Owo Local Government.

It was learnt that he had been a guest of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences (ICPC) over the alleged misappropriation of a sum of N60m SURE-P funds.

The money was allegedly misappropriated by the council officials while Olipede was the Director of Local Government (DLG).

He was promoted to the position of PS and sworn in by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu in December 2017.

The PS reportedly resisted arrest initially and threatened to mobilise the people around against anti-graft agents.

All efforts to obtain reaction of Femi Joseph, the spokesperson of the state police command, failed as he could not be reached on phone.

Irregular Power Supply: Eko Disco apologises to Lagos residents

Eko Disco apologises to Lagos residents over irregular power supply

The General Manager Corporate Communications, Mr Godwin Idemudia, said the epileptic supply was due to last week’s system collapse on the national grid.

The management of the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) on Sunday apologised to its consumers over the irregular power supply.

General Manager Corporate Communications, Mr Godwin Idemudia, said the epileptic supply was due to last week’s system collapse on the national grid.

Idemudia, said the system collapse resulted in nationwide blackout.

The General Manager said for the past five days, power supply to electricity consumers under Eko Disco has been epileptic.

“Until Generation goes up, there is nothing we can do now because National Grid (NG) is the only source of our supply.

“We feel your pains.

“We are, therefore, appealing to customers to bear with us, as supply will be restored as soon as these repairs are concluded.

“EKEDC highly regrets any inconveniences caused by this irregular supply,” he said.

Nigeria on Jan.2 was thrown into a nationwide blackout as the country suffered total collapse of its power system grid.

The collapse followed a fire incident on Nigerian Gas Processing and Transportation Company Ltd (NGPTC’s) Escravos Lagos Pipeline System, which supplies gas to plants generating 3,182 Mega Watt (MW). All the plants shut down.

These plants include Egbin 1,320MW; Olorunsogo National Integrated Power Plant (NIPP) 676MW; Olorunsogo 338MW; Omotosho NIPP 450MW; Omotosho 338 MW and Paras 60MW power stations.

The Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, which confirmed the collapse and the shutdown of gas supply to the plants, described the incident as a setback to the power sector.

Politics: 'I've wasted enough of my viewers’ time': Jake Tapper abruptly ends heated interview with Trump adviser

stephen miller

CNN host Jake Tapper and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller battled during an interview about Michael Wolff's new book about President Trump.

  • CNN host Jake Tapper and senior policy adviser Stephen Miller duked it out during an interview about the contents of Michael Wolff's new book about President Donald Trump.
  • Miller attempted to dismiss former chief strategist Steve Bannon's criticism of the Trump White House by downplaying the former political adviser's role in the administration.

CNN host Jake Tapper clashed with senior policy adviser Stephen Miller over claims in "Fire & Fury: Inside The Trump White House," Michael Wolff's explosive new tell-all about President Donald Trump's campaign, presidential transition, and administration.

In an interview on "State of the Union" on Sunday, Tapper pressed Miller to respond to some of the most high-profile claims, including Bannon's assertion that a 2016 meeting between the Trump campaign and a Kremlin-linked lawyer was "unpatriotic" and "treasonous."

Miller dismissed both Bannon and Wolff's credibility, saying the author was a "garbage author of a garbage book," and that claims in the book were "a pile of trash." He repeatedly described Bannon's comments in the book as "grotesque," saying his role in the White House was "greatly exaggerated."

"Is it really the position of the Trump White House that Steve Bannon had nothing to do with the presidency?" Tapper said after listing priorities that Bannon pushed during his time in the administration. "Can you acknowledge that he was a key player?"

"His role has been greatly exaggerated, whereas the president hasn't gotten the due that he deserves for the movement that he put together to tap into the kinds of people whose life concerns don't get a lot of attention on CNN," Miller replied.

Miller then repeatedly attempted to pivot to criticism of CNN, a favorite Trump target. Miller said Tapper was being "condescending" and described CNN's coverage of the Trump administration as "hysterical" and "toxic" when Tapper asked about whether Trump was mentally fit to serve in the Whtie House.

"Steven, I'm trying to get to the issue of the president's fitness," Tapper said.

"I'm getting to the issue of your fitness," Miller replied. "The president's tweets absolutely reaffirm the plain spoken truth: self made billionaire who revolutionized reality TV, and tapped into something magical that's happening in the heart of this country."

"The president has an approval rating in the 30s, I don't know what's magical that you're talking about," Tapper responded.

After Miller repeatedly described Trump as a "political genius" and lamented what he said was unfair treatment during the interview, Tapper said there was "one viewer you care about right now," and abruptly ended the interview.

"I think I've wasted enough of my viewers' time. Thank you, Stephen," Tapper said.

The appearance was one of Miller's first major Sunday show television interviews since the beginning of the administration, when he made a slew of appearances defending the president's travel ban. Though Miller's posture during earlier interviews was seen by many critics as standoffish, his performance earned praise from the president.

Indeed, shortly after Sunday's interview, Trump blasted Tapper and praised Miller.

DPR Offers 2,000 Litres Of Petrol Free To Motorists In Kaduna

Petrol Post, Bayelsa

The North West Zone of the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has dispensed over 2,000 litres of petrol free to motorists in Kaduna.

Mr Ibrahim Chiroma, Chairman of the DPR joint task force, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the fuel was found hoarded at SUL Nigeria Limited filling station at Rigachikun.

According to him, the marketer engages in selling the product to black market operators late at night and has been warned several times to no avail.

Chiroma said the joint task force with members drawn from all security agencies had no option than to confiscate the commodity and dispense it free to motorists.

He said the task force may dismantle the station’s service pumps as a stiffer sanction to serve as deterrent to other petroleum marketers.

Chiroma stressed that the measure was part of efforts to end the worsening fuel crises in the country.

NAN reports that the DPR had earlier sold off 17,700 litres of petrol to motorists in Zaria and Kaduna found hoarded in three filling stations.

FG accuses ASUU of hijacking released N23bn as SSANU, NASU, NAAT adamant

Strategy: America has made incredible tech advances in the last century — and Silicon Valley is using that privilege to make horrible health decisions

null

People buy into wild trends because of reliance on emotions and their personal experiences over historical and scientific facts. Take "raw water," for example.

  • Silicon Valley is developing an obsession with untreated, unfiltered water.
  • "Raw" water can spread bacteria and diseases including cholera, E. coli, Hepatitis A, and Giardia.
  • People make illogical decisions and buy into absurd trends because of a reliance on emotions and their personal experiences over historical and scientific facts.

Silicon Valley is no stranger to bizarre trends.

The latest: unfiltered, untreated water. Sold as "raw" or "live" water, fans say that the beverage has health benefits that tap or traditional bottled water lacks.

There's a lot that's wrong with this. First, there's no scientific evidence that untreated water has additional health benefits. In fact, there's a lot of evidence that water that isn't properly treated is extremely dangerous.

"Almost everything conceivable that can make you sick can be found in water," food safety expert Bill Marler told Business Insider.

Unfiltered, untreated water, even from the cleanest streams, can contain animal feces, spreading Giardia, which brings on symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea and results in roughly 4,600 hospitalizations a year. Hepatitis A, which resulted in 20 deaths in a California outbreak in 2017, can be spread through water if it isn't treated. E. coli and cholera can also be transmitted via untreated water.

The reason these infections aren't killing Americans constantly is because of scientific advances — and safety regulations — that have been made over the last century. Obsession with the dangerous beverage in certain circles reveals both an unscientific self-absorption and a lack of historical understanding.

Because filtered, treated water has become the norm, Marler says, most people don't realize how dangerous s0-called "raw water" can be.

"The diseases that killed our great-grandparents were completely forgotten about," he said.

Most Americans don't personally know anyone who died of Hepatitis A or cholera, thanks to advances in technology and more stringent safety standards. As a result, they had a hard time realizing the risks involved in consuming untreated water.

"It's fine till some 10-year-old girl dies a horrible death from cholera in Montecito, California," Marler said.

In other words, those who forget history are doomed to repeat it.

In fact, the lack of clean water is still an issue in the modern world — including parts of the US. Roughly 200 million Americans said in a recent survey by the water advocacy brand Bluewater that they worry about contaminants in their drinking water.

It's a problem that persists far beyond untreated water.

"Similar to Bodega (which seeks to replace independent corner stores) and the now-defunct Juicero (which sold $400 juicers), 'raw water' startups may be trying to solve a problem that doesn't exist — at least in Silicon Valley," reported Business Insider's Leanna Garfield.

According to Marler, the raw-water trend is similar to people's obsession with raw milk or opposition to vaccines. While they lack scientific evidence, they're convinced that they are correct, in part because they have failed to see the repercussions of life without scientific advances.

Spring water — without any modern filtering systems — appeals to people's emotional idea of purity and health. It only takes talking to a scientist or reading a history book to see that consuming unfiltered water has lead to countless deaths over the centuries.

"You can't stop consenting adults from being stupid," Marler said. "But we should at least try."

Days Of Boko Haram’s Rump Numbered – Buratai

NaijaArmyP, Soldiers, Boko Haram

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai said the days of the rump of Boko Haram terrorists are numbered, in spite of occasional attacks of Nigerian targets.

Buratai gave the assurance while addressing troops of the 8 Division at Monguno, headquarters of Monguno Local Government Area of Borno.

He, therefore, charged the troops to be determined in the efforts to stablilise their area of operation and finally overcome the Boko Haram challenge in the country.

“We must remain here to stabilise it.

“You all know that we have some few attacks here and there by the same elements – Boko Haram, but I assured you that their days are numbered.

“With your efforts, with your determination, we will finally overcome the Boko Haram challenge,’’ he said.

The chief of army staff noted that the creation of the 8 Division was a “major strategic decision’’ which had helped in addressing the challenge of Boko Haram terrorism in Borno north.

“I want to say that this division has lived up to its expectation of containing the Boko Haram challenge in this part of the country.

“What remains is for us to continue to stabilise and continue to operate, to prevent any element that may raise their heads in the future.

“This part of the country or this part of the region, especially the Lake Chad region has always been volatile.

“That is why members of the Lake Chad Commission created the Multinational Joint Task Force.

“So, we will see ourselves performing similar duties even after the final clearance of the Boko Hartam terrorists,’’ Buratai added.

He warned the troops to refrain from all acts of indiscipline as peace was gradually returning to the area and displaced people returning to their communities restart their lives.

The army chief further warned that those caught engaging in trading and extortion would be dealt with according to the law.

“Issues of indiscipline must also be checked within the division.

“As the people here gradually return to their communities, return to their businesses, they should be allowed to do their businesses free without any interference.

“Report of extortion or soldiers engaging themselves in trading activities with the people here must be resisted.

“We do not want any distraction. Trading in fish or cattle, if anyone – soldier, is caught, he is going to be dealt with according to the law.

“You are here to maintain the peace, you are here to perform your duties as soldiers; you are here not to trade or do any other business.

“Very soon, those that are in the IDPs camps will go back to their homes and re-establish themselves and the economic activities will increase.

“Do not fall into that temptation to be involved (in trading),’’ he further warned.

The 8 Division was created as a task force in 2016 to boost military operations against the Boko Haram menace, particularly in the Lake Chad region.

But the division will move to Sokoto State in the North West, where it would be operationalised soon, according to Buratai.

The army chief visited one of the camps in Monguno, holding 20, 000 IDPs and donated some relief materials, including food items, detergents and clothes to them.

He used the opportunity to address the elderly men and women IDPs in the camp, including the 700 recently rescued by troops during operations in the Chad basin.

A total of 2, 700 captives were rescued in the last one week.

While 700 were rescued on Tuesday, 2,000 were freed on Thursday morning after intensive artillery and aerial bombardment of the terrorists’ enclaves in the Lake Chad region.

Kogi retires 8 perm secs, dismisses 1,774 workers

Kogi state Government, on Sunday, confirmed the compulsory retirement of eight permanent secretaries, some directors and dismissal of 1, 774 others from the state civil service.

The affected staff were served their letters last December.

The letters were signed by the state Head of Service, Mrs Deborah Ogunmola and the Chairman of the state Civil Service Commission, Mr Ado Shaibu.

A copy of the retirement letter addressed to one of the affected permanent secretaries indicated that the retirement was “in the interest of the public.”

Some of the affected permanent secretaries told newsmen that they were contemplating legal action.

However, Mrs Petra Akinti-Onyegbule, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Yahaya Bello, defended the action, saying it was part of ongoing reforms in the civil service.

According to her, the retirement affected only permanent secretaries that have served for four years and above.

“The retired permanent secretaries have been paid their consolidated benefits that accrued to them.

“Also affected are civil servants who have attained the special salary grade level 17,” she said.

The governor’s media aide added that directors that served for eight years and above would also be affected.

She said the exact number of directors to be affected would be based on the outcome of the recent promotion interviews conducted for them.

“ In order to get the best replacement for the retired permanent secretaries, directors who had been in office for eight years and above but are yet to attain retirement age or maximum number of years in office were given the opportunity to partake in the exams to fill the position of permanent secretaries.

“The result of the examinations which held on Tuesday, December 12, 2017 and followed by interviews is yet to be out.

“Until the result is out, we will not be able to put a definite figure on the number of directors that will be affected by the compulsory retirement,’’ she said.

The chief press secretary also confirmed that 1,667 workers with fake certificates were dismissed from the state civil service.

She said that those dismissed were uncovered during the screening carried out by the state government in 2016 and 2017.

Akinti-Onyegbule also said 107 other workers were dismissed for engaging in fraudulent activities.

“Kogi state government is carrying out reforms at different stages to reposition its civil service for effectiveness, efficiency and productivity.

“The screening exercise which began in 2016 has since ended.

“The reversal of the inverted pyramid at the civil service is another phase of the much needed reforms meant to ensure the civil service plays its role as the engine room of government efficiently and effectively.” she said. (NAN)
