Ignore AGF’s Memo Seeking Change Of Name For Maritime Varsity, Activist Tells NASS

AGF, Abacha, Abubakar Malami, Switzerland

Oleh – A Niger Delta Peace Advocate and Youth Leader, Comrade Shedrack Agediga, has urged the National Assembly to ignore the memo from Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami SAN seeking to change name of Nigerian Maritime University.

Speaking on the AGF’s memo, which he termed evil, Agediga warned that the directive seeking to change the NMU’s name from Okerenkoko to Okerenghigho, was capable of causing strive and bloodshed among the Ijaws and Itsekiris.

He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, call on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Malami SAN, to order regarding his memo of discord and withdraw it in the interest of national security.

Comrade Agediga, who stated this during a press briefing in Warri, Delta State noted that the action of the AGF was a clear invitation to avoidable crisis in the Niger Delta region that had enjoyed relative peace for some time and boosted crude oil production.

He said the AGF’s memo for a change of name of the Maritime University would further plunge the region into another round of crisis particularly in Warri South West between the Ijaws and the Itsekiris.

Agediga recalled that few months back the region was embroiled in crisis due to the resurgence of militant activities which brought crude oil production to its lowest ebb but took the intervention of well meaning leaders, PANDEF including state governors to stabilise the situation before production hit an all time high.

The Niger Delta Youth Leader emphasised that President Buhari’s hands were full with security issues such as the Fulani and herdsmen clashes, Boko Haram in the North East, IPOB in the South East aside kidnapping among others hence it was needless for the AGF to foment another serious crisis via his memo to the National Assembly to change the ancestral name of where the Maritime University was sited.

He said Gbaramatu Kingdom and Delta State should not be used as a theatre of war or a base to test newly acquired military software and urged the National Assembly to ignore the evil memo which was capable on causing strive and bloodshed among the people.

The activist maintained that the National Assembly should summon the AGF on the matter as it was the height of injustice and abuse of public office as the action of some public office holders was inimical to peace and development.

“The action of the AGF is unnecessary, predetermined and a call for anarchy and must not be allowed to happen, while we must stop those persons who deliberately create crisis in the Niger Delta region in order to militarize our communities and create the impression that the region is not safe for development.”

Nvidia announced a ton of new products at its press conference kicking off CES.

Nvidia's stock price is rallying after the company kicked off CES with the first keynote and a string of new products and partnerships.

Nvidia is trading up 3.13% at $222.05 a share on Monday after the company announced a partnership with Uber, new autonomous driving chips, and new gaming displays.

In the first speech of this year's CES, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced a new partnership with Uber. The ride-hailing company has been working on developing self-driving cars and selected Nvidia as its artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technology provider.

In the same speech, Huang said that an update to the company's self-driving technology will begin delivering this quarter. The "Drive" series of chips were hailed as a way for car makers to eliminate a trunk full of computers in their self-driving cars.

The new Xavier chip is what Nvidia calls "the world's most powerful system on a chip" is set to go out to customers this quarter, and should provide a speed and power consumption upgrade over previous generations.

Nvidia got its start in gaming and didn't leave its most loyal customers out of the keynote. The company announced new "Big Format Gaming Displays," which combine giant monitors with improved refresh rates needed for better gaming performance. Several companies are working on incorporating Nvidia's tech into their displays, and they are expected to be available this summer.

The company also revealed that its streaming-game platform will be available to most Windows-based computers in an open beta format. The platform allows users to run high-end video games on Nvidia's machines, and stream the game to any computer with minimal lag. The idea is that users will be able to play games on their computers, even if they aren't wielding the latest graphics card and processor.

"We believe there were numerous incremental takeaways on recent growth and potential new C18/F19 product activity," Craig Ellis, an analyst at B. Riley, said of the keynote, on Monday.

Nvidia is up 106.4% over the last year.

Sports: 18 under-the-radar young athletes who could hit the big time in 2018

Daniel Dubois.

2018's young athletes to watch out for include the son of a football icon, the next Conor McGregor, and the best college basketball player on the planet.

Sports fans are always looking for the next big thing, whether it's a footballer like Neymar, a basketball player like LeBron James, or a boxer who will measure up to Anthony Joshua.

Business Insider has compiled a list of young, under-the-radar athletes who look set to make waves in the ring, on the court, or on the pitch in 2018.

From the "next Conor McGregor" to the new "face of snowboarding," the athletes could become the biggest thing in their respective sports.

Ranked by age from oldest to youngest, scroll down to see 18 under-the-radar young athletes who we expect to hit the big time in 2018.

Mackenzie Dern, 24 — The American bringing expert jiu-jitsu to UFC.

Age: 24

Sport: Cage fighting

Profile: Once a highly-decorated athlete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Dern is beginning to take the wider mixed martial arts industry by storm.

She has won five cage fights in a row and is due to contest her first UFC bout on March 3.

Here's Dern using stand-up to knock Mandy Polk to the ground, before locking in a tight rear naked choke submission at LFA 24 in 2017.

Ōtani Shōhei, 23 — Japan's Babe Ruth, who has a record-breaking 102.5mph pitch.

Age: 23

Sport: Baseball

Profile: Shōhei began his career playing for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2013.

Before he left for MLB team Los Angeles Angels in 2017, he won the 2016 Japan Series title, a number of MVP awards, and recorded the fastest pitch in Japanese baseball history at 102.5 mph.

His transfer to the Angels is set to take his career to the next level and, in the video below, you can see exactly why he is known as the "Japanese Babe Ruth."

Mattie Rogers, 22 — An American record-setter who can already lift twice her bodyweight.

Age: 22

Sport: Weightlifting

Profile: Rogers has strength and power that belies her age as she already holds the United States record in the snatch (106kg), clean & jerk (134kg), and total (239kg) lift in her weight class (69kg).

The Floridian has tremendous technique and though she missed out on qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games, she was the best lifter at the National Championships and Olympic Trials.

She won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships (video below) and, as she gets older, she will only get stronger.

Ester Ledecká, 22 — The Czech who dominates in TWO winter sports.

Age: 22

Sport: Snowboarder and alpine skiier.

Profile: One sport isn't enough for Ledecká to excel in, and she competes in two.

She is a two-time gold medalist at the Snowboard World Championships, regularly scores top 30 finishes in downhill, super-G, and alpine skiing, and is certainly one to watch at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Here's the sort of speed she can reach racing downhill on her snowboard.

Maverick Viñales, 22 — The Spanish MotoGP talent challenging Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez.

Age: 22

Sport: MotoGP

Profile: Move over Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez, because there's a new kid on the starting block.

Viñales spent little time racing through the motorcycle divisions. In 2013 he won the Moto3 world title and, just two years later, won the best rookie award in the MotoGP class.

Since racing in MotoGP, the motorcycle equivalent of Formula 1, Viñales continues to increase his seasonal points haul and looks set to challenge for the 2018 title.

Here, you can find out what it is like riding on board with Viñales.

Aaron Pico, 21 — The young American being talked up as the next Conor McGregor.

Age: 21

Sport: Cage fighting

Profile: Renowned fight promoter Scott Coker told Business Insider last year that Aaron Pico was the "greatest prospect in the history of mixed martial arts."

Pico has it all. He has wrestled since he was four years old, he learned jiu-jitsu under submission expert Eddie Bravo, and was taught boxing by Manny Pacquiao's coach Freddie Roach.

Disaster struck in his mixed martial arts debut as he lost to Zach Freeman at Bellator 180 in June, 2017. However, he bounced back by knocking out Justin Linn with soul-stealing blows at Bellator 183 in September (video below).

2018 will be a huge year for Pico as Coker expects the youngster will blossom into the next Conor McGregor.

Mason Crane, 20 — The spin bowler who will be an English cricket staple for years to come.

Age: 20

Sport: Cricket

Profile: A leg-spin bowler, Crane is a hot property right now as he was called up to England's Test squad for the Ashes and made his debut in the fifth Test against Australia on January 4.

Crane bowled 17 overs in Australia's first innings, admitted his "emotions were everywhere" in The Independent, but won praise from Australian fast bowler Pat Cummings: "He's similar to a lot of young leggies, gives the ball a rip, landing it pretty well."

Here's what to expect from Crane's bowling in the future, as he takes three wickets in this clip.

Daniel Dubois, 20 — The English heavyweight who will be a future Anthony Joshua opponent.

Age: 20

Sport: Boxing

Profile: Boxing rookie Daniel Dubois signed a contract with fight promoter Frank Warren in 2017. That year, he won his first six fights in a row — all by knockout.

Business Insider understands that Warren sees Dubois as his answer to world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and if Dubois keeps winning in the coming years, it will not be long before their paths cross and they come to blows.

Dubois won a regional title, the Southern Area heavyweight belt, with this thumping performance against AJ Carter in September, 2017.

Jelena Ostapenko, 20 — The Latvian tennis star who could add to her major honours in 2018.

Age: 20

Sport: Tennis

Profile: Ostapenko claimed a number of notable scalps in 2017 including Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep, and Garbiñe Muguruza.

She won the 2017 French Open, ended the year with a world rank of seven, and won praise from former British number one Tim Henman.

Last year, Henman told Business Insider that Ostapenko's win in Paris was "amazing," and that a few women's tennis stars were fancying their chances while former world number one Serena Williams took time out to give birth.

Ostapenko ended the year by defeating Williams in an exhibition match. The highlights are below.

Ryan Garcia, 19 — The American who is the most important Golden Boy signing since Canelo Alvarez.

Age: 19

Sport: Boxing

Profile: Ryan Garcia has a TV-friendly fighting style, fast hands, and can pack a punch.

A 15-time national champion as an amateur, Garcia's hot streak in the unpaid ranks has carried over as a professional as he is unbeaten in 13 fights, has signed with powerful promoter Golden Boy Promotions, and is seen by ESPN as the "most important [Golden Boy] signing since Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez" in 2010.

Garcia competes in a talent-rich division at super featherweight but it will not be long before he breaks into the top 10.

This 30-second knockout win in September highlights his skill set.

Christian Pulisic, 19 — The attacking midfielder close to a Real Madrid or FC Barcelona transfer.

Age: 19

Sport: Football

Profile: Attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic is enjoying a remarkable rise in the Borussia Dortmund first team.

Pulisic has returned three goals, one assist, and has been responsible for creating 16 key passes so far this season.

Though he won't feature in the 2018 FIFA World Cup as USA failed to qualify, the year could still be a big one for Pulisic as Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos believes the teenager is "one move away" from being able to play for Real, FC Barcelona, or "one of the big Premier League clubs," according to Goal.com.

Pulisic won Bundesliga's Goal of the Month award for December with this frenetic-paced two-touch finish against Hoffenheim.

Marvin Bagley III, 18 — The Duke University power forward who is the best college basketball player on the planet.

Age: 18

Sport: Basketball

Profile: American basketball phenom Marvin Bagley III is considered the most dominant college-level player on the planet.

At just 18, Bagley has put up dominant numbers like 21.9 points per game on average, 1.6 assists per game, and 11.6 rebounds. He has tremendous reflexes, ball-handling, and will be a star pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Trick shot, or an eagle-eyed opportunist? Watch this clip from a match in December and decide.

Luka Dončić, 18 — The young Latvian following the footsteps of New York Knicks center Kristaps Porziņģis.

Age: 18

Sport: Basketball

Profile: Luka Dončić will rival Marvin Bagley III as the number one pick for the 2018 NBA Draft.

Dončić has a unique versatility to his game, can dribble with both hands, and has sharp on-court intelligence. He can pass, shoot, and score from range.

As an Eastern European player who began his career in Spain and will likely end up at a big NBA side, it is likely Dončić is treading a similar path to success as New York Knicks center Kristaps Porziņģis.

In this clip, Slovenian star Dončić dominates Latvia with a 27-point display.

Justin Kluivert, 18 — The young Dutch winger who is a reported transfer target for Manchester United.

Age: 18

Sport: Football

Profile: You might recognise Justin Kluivert's surname. He is, indeed, the son of former Champions League winning striker Patrick Kluivert, who was the Netherlands' all-time top scorer from 2003-2013.

Following in the family footsteps, Justin Kluivert is beginning his career at Ajax and already has set tongues wagging. He is even a reported target for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, according to the Manchester Evening News.

In November 2017, Kluivert scored a hat-trick in Ajax's 5-1 victory over Roda JC in the Eredivisie — the Dutch equivalent of the Premier League.

But, for the rest of the season, he may score no goal finer than this worldie one month later in December — pick that one out!

Marcus Smith, 18 — The English fly half already returning Man of the Match performances in rugby union.

Age: 18

Sport: Rugby Union

Profile: Former England rugby captain Chris Robshaw recently told Business Insider that Marcus Smith is an up-and-coming prospect he expects to see progress further at international level in 2018.

The fly-half made his professional debut for Harlequins in September 2017 and, just two weeks later, returned a Man-of-the-Match performance against Wasps in the Aviva Premiership.

Wasps fly-half Danny Cipriani explains what makes Smith so special here.

Rasmus Dahlin, 17 — The generational talent who isn't even old enough to drink.

Age: 17

Sport: Ice hockey

Profile: Rasmus Dahlin plays as a defenceman for Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League.

What makes Dahlin so remarkable is that he is 6 foot 2, 185 pounds, and establishing himself as a generational talent — and he's not yet old enough to drink.

Dahlin is regarded to be the top eligible pick for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and be the first Sweden-born player to go first in the draft since 1989.

His tremendous puck control is there for all to see in this short clip.

Vinicius Júnior, 17 — The Brazilian who cost Real Madrid €45 million in 2017.

Age: 17

Sport: Football

Profile: Everybody in football looks for the next big thing. The next Ronaldo, the next Messi, and the next Neymar.

At 17, it is too early to tell whether Vinicius Júnior is the next big thing but Real Madrid certainly has faith that he is. The club, after all, spent €45 million on his transfer in 2017.

Currently on loan at Flamengo, Vinicius Júnior scored four times in the Brazilian team's march to the Copa Sudamericana final.

He is used sparingly, more frequently starting games on the bench than on the pitch, but Real will be keeping close tabs on how the striker develops this year considering the level of investment it has already made.

In this clip from August last year, Vinicius Júnior managed to repeat Romário's famous goal against Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier in 1993.

Chloe Kim, 17 — The American who is already seen as the face of snowboarding.

Age: 17

Sport: Snowboarding

Profile: Chloe Kim has already chairlifted her way to the summit of professional surfboarding.

The teenager became the first person under 16 to win a hat-trick of gold medals at an X Games and continues to pick up individual awards.

She missed out on the 2014 Winter Olympics as she was too young, but has qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang as she links up with the US Snowboarding Team.

Kim is certainly one to watch. It is not uncommon to hear commentators call her the future, or even the current face, of the sport (watch below).

Wike

Mr Device Ikanya, Chairman, All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers, has advised Gov. Nyesom Wike to improve on the security situation in the state or resign from office.

Ikanya gave the advice on Monday in Port Harcourt.

He said that it was the sole responsibility of every government to ensure the safety of lives and properties of its citizens and challenged the Rivers government to step up on its responsibility.

“The first duty of every government is protection of lives and properties of the residents; I call on the state government to be more sensitive to issues of security in the interest of our dear state,’’ he said.

Pope Calls On International Community To Ease Tensions On Korean Peninsula

Pope Francis

Pope Francis called on the international community to support dialogue to ease tensions on the Korean peninsula and to work for a legally binding ban on nuclear weapons.

In an annual speech to diplomats on Monday that has come to be known as his “State of the World” address, Francis also repeated his call for the “status quo” of Jerusalem to remain intact following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize the city as Israel’s capital.

Francis also addressed climate change, calling for countries to remain committed to the 2015 Paris accord on reducing carbon emissions.

Trump has announced that the United States will withdraw from the agreement.

“It is of paramount importance to support every effort at dialogue on the Korean peninsula, in order to find new ways of overcoming the current disputes, increasing mutual trust and ensuring a peaceful future for the Korean people and the entire world,” Francis said.

The pope addressed diplomats a day before North Korea and South Korea are due to hold talks expected to address North Korea’s participation in the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Earlier, after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un asserted that he had a nuclear button at the ready, Trump tweeted that the U.S. button at his disposal was bigger and more powerful.

“Nuclear weapons must be banned,” Francis said, quoting a document issued by Pope John XXIII at the height of the Cold War and adding that there is “no denying that the conflagration could be started by some chance and unforeseen circumstance”.

He noted that the Holy See was among 122 states that last year agreed to a UN treaty to ban nuclear weapons.

The U.S., Britain, France and others boycotted the talks that led to the treaty, instead pledging commitment to a decades-old Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Don Waney: How kidnapper who killed 22 was gunned down by soldiers

How kidnapper who killed 22 was gunned down by soldiers

Don Waney was the kidnapper and cultist who terrorised Rivers and the entire Niger Delta. Here's how he died.

The name ‘Don Waney’ drove plenty of fear down the spines of Rivers State residents in particular and Niger Delta inhabitants in general.

For Don Waney was a cultist whose methods were as unconventional as they come. He was so revered, he had the prefix 'General' attached to his name.

Unable to rein him in, the Rivers State government even offered Don Waney and his band of cultists an amnesty deal on October 5, 2016. It was a deal that broke down before the finer details could even be conveyed to the press.

'Worse than Evans'

Born Johnson Igwedibia, Don Waney often operated with military or other law enforcement fatigues. He wore mean looks even when sipping on alcohol and puffing marijuana in nondescript areas of Port Harcourt.

He operated with impunity in the full glare of law enforcement, fuelling insinuation that he was above the law.

“He was worse than Evans (another kidnapper who terrorized Lagos) in the sense that his methods were crude and he operated in the open. We often thought he was above the law”, one resident of Rivers told Pulse.

Omoku massacre

On January 1, 2018, as worshippers returned from New Year’s cross over service in Omoku, Rivers State, Don Waney’s gang waylaid them and ended the lives of 22.

The incident would come to be known as the ‘Omoku massacre’.

It was a massacre that shook Rivers to its foundation.

State Governor Nyesom Wike and his predecessor Rotimi Amaechi traded bitter words over the killings.

Dakuku Peterside who lost the governorship contest to Wike, also weighed in, asking the Rivers Governor to tender his resignation in the face of the killings that had turned the State into a river of blood.

ALSO READ: Those politicising recent killings must be stopped – Vice President

Amaechi would double down as he called on State lawmakers to impeach Wike: "It never happened when I was governor. We (the security chiefs and myself) ensured that we didn't sleep at night. We stayed awake for the citizens to sleep. I think the governor needs to do much more than that or quit the office.

"I was governor of Rivers State, I did not play PDP/APC politics. Life is life, it has no symbol. Nobody has APC life or PDP life.

"The first responsibility of a governor which is what the oath of office requires, is that you swear to protect lives and property.

"When you don't protect life and property, what do you do? It is impeachment. Unfortunately, there is no House of Assembly in Rivers State.

"There is too much noise coming from Rivers State. The governor just wakes up and starts shouting, abusing people. That is all he does. Mr. Project painting roads”.

N200M reward for the Don

As the war of words from both political camps intensified, Wike placed a N200M bounty on Don Waney’s head.

"We have placed a N200 million bounty for relevant information that will lead to the arrest of all those involved in this unfortunate act of violence”, Wike declared.

"Anybody who is connected to this crime in any way, will have his/her houses forfeited to the government. This place has been peaceful before this unfortunate mayhem.

"You cannot shed innocent blood and go free. We are working with all the security agencies to do everything possible to arrest the perpetrators. They must pay for this.

"I am pained by this unfortunate mayhem. Enough is enough."

Synergy

Sources tell Pulse that security agencies deployed to Rivers agreed to work together to root out Don Waney. It was a synergy uncommon in these parts.

On the afternoon of Sunday, January 7, 2018, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu who is Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, told Pulse that Don Waney was no more. He would follow up with a press statement detailing how the kidnapper’s life was brought to an end.

“The authorities of 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt wish to inform the peace loving people of Omoku in ONELGA in particular, Rivers State and indeed the entire good people of Niger Delta in general that the notorious cult leader, kidnap kingpin and mass murderer Don Waney is dead”. Ilayusi said.

“Recall that in the early hours of Monday 20th November 2017, troops of 6 Division Nigerian Army acting on credible information from some patriotic members of the public, raided the evil Don Waney enclave in Omoku, ONELGA Rivers State where shocking discoveries of assorted weapons, dynamites, bags of suspected cannabis, full military camouflage uniforms, military boots, military communication radios, 10 human skulls and human bones were discovered.

“Additionally, in continuation of the operation on Tuesday 21st November 2017, the troops also exhumed decomposing bodies of some of his victims in his shrine in the glaring eyes of the media who were invited to witness first hand”.

Last straw

Iliyasu said Don Waney’s mastermind of the New Year day killings was the last straw for law enforcement.

“Perhaps not satisfied with the numerous lives of innocent citizens he took, Don Waney masterminded the despicable New Year day mayhem in Omoku in which he led his notorious gang of criminals to murder 23 peace loving citizens of Omoku when they were returning from cross over service at about 1:30am on Monday 1st January 2018.

“Intense surveillance activities on him and his gang by the Department of State Services (DSS) Rivers State Command revealed that after committing these atrocities he relocated to a neighbourhood within Enugu Town  in Enugu State where he rented an apartment and started living among unsuspecting neighbours within the community.

“From the relative safety of his newly-rented apartment, Don Waney was already perfecting plans to wrought another mayhem in Omoku in which he was to attack churches, schools, Army and Police locations and the residences of the generality of the already traumatized people of Omoku. However, following his successful geo-location to his new Enugu neighbourhood hideout by the DSS Rivers State Command, a combined team of troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army Enugu and personnel of DSS Rivers State Command raided the hideout to arrest him and his other accomplices.

“Incidentally on sensing that the combine team were closing in on his residence, Don Waney, his Second- in- Command (Ikechukwu Adiele) and another gang member (Lucky Ode) attempted to escape through the back exit of the apartment and were shot down by the eagle eyed troops in the process. One of them died on the spot while the other two who sustained gunshot wounds eventually died while being evacuated for medical attention.

“The remains of Don Waney and his cohorts were brought back to Port Harcourt, Rivers State by the combine team and handed over to the Rivers State Police Command for further action.

“To this end, the authorities of 6 Division Nigerian Army Port Harcourt wishes to use this opportunity to extend their condolences to the families of all the victims of the evil Don Waney and his gang.

“We also wish to solicit your further cooperation in volunteering useful information to track down and arrest the remaining gang members so as to bring them to justice for a peaceful, prosperous and secured Omoku community, ONELGA, Rivers State and the entire Niger Delta region”.

Commendation

It was a relieved Gov Wike who commended security agencies and President Muhammadu Buhari for the operation that smoked out Don Waney and put him to the sword.

According to Wike; “The success recorded in the operations that ended Don Waney and his men is a victory for the law abiding people in the state.

“It underscores the desirability of honest partnership and synergy between the government and security agencies as well as the public in tackling security problems in the state.

“This victory gladdens our heart and we remain more committed in the fight against crimes and will continue to support the police and all security agencies in the onerous task of securing our dear Rivers State and her people.

“We thank President Muhammadu Buhari for not playing politics with the Omoku massacre but gave a marching order which galvanised the efforts of the 6 Div of Nigeria Army, the DSS, police and everybody or agency who played a role to avenge the death of the innocent people killed in Omoku on 1st January, 2018.

“The success of our collective effort has shown that there is no hiding place for the wicked”, the governor added.

Oil rises, poised to make above $70 , on fewer U.S. rigs, OPEC

Oil prices rose on Monday, poised to make above 70 dollars on a slight decline in the number of U.S. rigs drilling for new production and sustained OPEC output cuts.

Brent sweet crude futures were at 67.95 dollars a barrel, 33 cents above their last close. The Brent oil is poised to rise over 70 dollars in spite of international Media “manipulative stance”, media editor reveals.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures had risen to 61.94 dollars a barrel by 1140 GMT,

Traders said the gains were due to a slight decline in the number of U.S. rigs drilling for new production. The rig count eased by five in the week to Jan. 5 to 742, according to data from oil services firm Baker Hughes.

In spite of this, U.S. production C-OUT-T-EIA is expected soon to rise above 10 million barrels per day, largely thanks to soaring output from shale drillers. Only Russia and Saudi Arabia produce more.

Rising U.S. production is the main factor countering output cuts led by the Middle East-dominated Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting countries and by Russia, which began in January last year and are set to last through 2018.

A senior OPEC source from a major Middle Eastern oil producer said on Monday that OPEC was monitoring unrest in Iran as well as Venezuela’s economic crisis, but will boost output only if there were significant and sustained production disruptions from those countries.

Stephen Innes, Head of Trading for Asia/Pacific at futures brokerage Oanda in Singapore, said “the OPEC vs Shale debate will rage” this year, being a key price-driving factor.

However, Innes added that Middle East turmoil would remain a key focus for oil markets and had the potential to “send oil prices rocketing higher”.

Shekau: Army says Boko Haram leader is in "terrible state of health"

Army says Shekau is in "terrible state of health"

The army said it's now focusing some of its attention on Abu Musab al-Barnawi.

The Nigerian Army has revealed that Abubakar Shekau, the leader of terrorist group, Boko Haram, is in a terrible state of health and is already a spent force.

This was disclosed by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Sani Usman, who said that the army is now focusing some of its attention on another influential factional terrorist leader, Abu Musab al-Barnawi, who has been recruiting youths into his fold.

Brigadier-General Usman also revealed that terrorists keep developing new ways to avoid detection and air strikes from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) but that the military keeps unraveling their deceptions.

He said, "The Boko Haram terrorists' tricks of evading air raids have been unraveled by the theatre command of Operation LAFIYA DOLE combating insurgency in the North East of Nigeria.

"The Boko Haram terrorists group has always perfected survival tricks to continue their nefarious activities through enticement, deceit, concealment and outright propaganda.

"These were decoded through credible intelligence which became imperative for the public to be aware of it.

"The insurgents deployed special roofing techniques in order to avoid air detection and bombardment from the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

"They resort to roofing their living accommodation and hideouts with a mixture of coated sugar and mud so that the roof will not reflect when there is sunshine. Decisive measures have been taken to deal with this deception.

"There is no doubt that the main Boko Haram terrorists group factional leader, Abubakar Shekau, is in a terrible state of health and not much a threat as he is now a spent horse, waiting for his waterloo.

"However, Abu Mus'ab Albarnawiy, who has been busy deceiving and recruiting gullible persons especially misguided youths into his fold, will soon be captured. We reliably learnt that some misguided persons, particularly youths, are getting conscripted into the sect through enticements.

"They are usually attracted to the sect because of the deceitful and erroneous impression that Abu Musab Albarnawiy's brand of 'jihad' and insurgency is refined and genuine. This is far from it.

"Both factions are terrorist organizations whose activities constitute crimes against humanity. Their nefarious activities run contrary to the religion of Islam.

"The faction has recruiters all over the country, especially in the North-east. However, their clearing house for such conscripts is at Potiskum, Yobe State. Efforts are ongoing to track those involved.

"There is no doubt that Mamman Nur Algadi has been wounded and he is more or less a cripple since 2014 at Mubi. He was hit by NAF while on motorcycle. He is not a fighter, rather he taught in Boko Haram terrorists' enclave, and he is also a member of the Shurah Council of the terrorists group.

"He was wounded along with one Abu Mujahid, an indigene of Saminaka, Kaduna State, who was later executed by Abubakar Shekau.

"In view of the above, the general public should be wary of these unscrupulous elements attempting to recruit more youths into their sect."

Boko Haram alive and well – Shekau

Shekau released a video message on Tuesday, January 2, 2018, claiming several attacks carried out by the terrorist group over the festive period.

In his first video message in months, he dismissed the government's insistence that the group is defeated, claiming that security agencies can do nothing to harm the group's operations.

The video displayed footage from a Christmas Day attack on a military checkpoint in Molai village on the outskirts of Maiduguri with terrorists shown shooting at soldiers from the back of battered pickup trucks.

Boko Haram menace

Since the insurgency of the terrorist group escalated after a 2009 crackdown by the military, Boko Haram, chiefly under the leadership of Shekau, has been responsible for the death of over 20,000 people and the displacement of more than 2.5 million scattered across Internally Displaced Person (IDP) camps across the country and its neighbours.

After a massive military operation resulted in the displacement of the group from its primary base in the infamous Sambisa Forest, it has resorted to suicide bomb attacks on soft targets and carried out daring attacks on military bases, with hundreds of captives still unaccounted for.

IOC extends North Korea’s Winter Olympics deadline

The International Olympic Committee has “extended the deadline” for North Korea’s participation in the Winter Olympics, it announced on Monday.

“We will be as flexible as we can be,” an IOC spokesman told AFP over North Korea sending a team to the Pyeongchang Games in South Korea.

Talks between the two Koreas hosted by IOC president Thomas Bach will take place at the Olympic movement’s headquarters in Lausanne on Tuesday.

“We welcome the discussion which will take place… between the governments of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK),” the IOC said.

“The IOC has been having discussions with both sides for a long time.

“In doing so we have kept the door open by extending the deadline for registration, and by offering support to North Korean athletes in the qualification process, whilst always respecting United Nations sanctions.”

On Saturday, North Korea Olympic body member Chang Ung said the isolated state was “likely to participate” in the Pyeongchang Games from February 9-25, Kyodo news agency reported.

Tuesday’s Lausanne summit comes days after the two Koreas agreed to hold their first official dialogue in more than two years to discuss the North’s participation in the Winter Olympics.

The tentative rapprochement comes after the North’s leader Kim Jong-Un warned in his New Year speech that he had a nuclear button on his desk, but also said Pyongyang could send a team to the Olympics.

The IOC in its statement Monday emphasised that its mission was “always to ensure the participation of all qualified athletes, beyond all political tensions and divisions.

“With regard to the very particular situation on the Korean peninsula we need the political commitment from all parties concerned to make such a participation possible,” it added.

“Once this political commitment is clear the IOC will take the final decision.”

Strange But True: Cheating can be beneficial to your relationship, expert says

A situation like this could push your relationship to a better, stronger phase.

A relationship expert explains how cheating could make your relationship better and healthier.

Cheating is wrong but it could be what helps to grow a relationship, according a love therapist.

Esther Perel, a US based sex and relationship therapist says that cheating helps relationships in a way because it makes people take stock of their marriage.

Of course what we've always known cheating to cause is a creation of doubts and pulling apart of whatever structure the relationship has been built on.

Once a partner cheats, it becomes hard to trust again or to form a connection as strong as what you had before their eyes strayed, even if it was one time.

However in a stark contrast to everything we seemingly know about cheating, Esther Perel claims cheating could make your relationship stronger and better.

“Many affairs are break-ups, but some affairs are make-ups,”  Perel tells The Guardian UK.

ALSO READ: Marriage issues that are just as bad as infidelity

The therapist is against infidelity and unfaithfulness among partners but she believes that when it does happen, divorce shouldn’t be the only option. Reconciliation, a chance to patch things up, move on from that occurrence should be on the cards.

“I think people should be able to determine for themselves the choices that they will make and the consequences thereof,” she says.

“To just push people to [breakups] and to think that divorce is always the better solution when it dissolves all the family bonds… Entire lives are intertwined with a marriage.”

Perel insists that cheating could help improve a relationship because it makes couples deal with their problems.

“Sometimes the relationship that comes out is stronger, and more honest and deeper than the one that existed before because people finally step up.”

What do you think of Esther's advice – sound or unsound?

Maina: Malami blocks Senate investigation into reinstatement scandal

Malami blocks Senate investigation into Maina scandal

The AGF said the National Assembly lacks the competence to investigate such a case.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, has filed a lawsuit in the Federal High Court, Abuja, to stop the Senate from investigating the reinstatement scandal involving wanted ex-pensions reform boss, Abdulrasheed Maina.

According to a report by TheCable, the AGF filed the suit with Justice Binta Nyako, urging the judge to stop the upper legislative chamber from probing the case because it lacks "legislative competence".

The suit read, "The employment, attendance at work, disengagement, reinstatement and or promotion of a civil servant are matters outside the exclusive and concurrent legislative lists contained in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

"That the national assembly cannot legitimately regulate the employment, attendance at work, disengagement, reinstatement and or promotion of a civil servant, which are matters exclusively within the purview of the Federal Civil Service Commission under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria1999 (as amended).

"The national assembly lacks the legislative competence to investigate the employment, attendance at work, disengagement, reinstatement and or promotion of a civil servant which are matters exclusively within the purview of the Federal Civil Service Commission under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria1999 (as amended).

"The power of investigation vested the national assembly by section 88 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) is limited and such that can only be exercised within the confines of Section 88 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

"The plaintiff as the chief law officer and minister of justice of the federation is bound to ensure compliance by the Federal Government of Nigeria and or any of its cognate organs/agencies with the express or implied contents of extant Judgements and Orders of competent courts in Nigeria.

"The defendant cannot constitute itself into a quasi-appellate court, tribunal or panel with a view to reviewing any executive action taken in compliance with the adverse judgment in the said Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/65/2013."

Maina's controversial reinstatement

In October 2017, Maina was recalled and promoted to head the Ministry of Interior's human resource department despite pending corruption charges against him.

This was after he was dismissed by the Federal Civil Service Commission in 2013 following a recommendation by the Office of the Head of Service.

In 2015, Maina was charged alongside former Head of Service, Steve Oronsaye, Osarenkhoe Afe and Fredrick Hamilton Global Services Limited before a Federal High Court on a 24-count charge bordering on procurement fraud and obtaining by false pretence through the award of fraudulent biometric contracts.

After he was declared wanted over an alleged N2 billion pension fraud, he fled abroad to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), evading the capture of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

AGF Malami; Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau; the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Abubakar Magaji; and Head of Service, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, have all been implicated in the scandal.

Malami denies writing letter of reinstatement

While appearing before the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee probing the issue on November 30, 2017, the AGF continued to insist that the letter of reinstatement that kickstarted the whole Maina controversy never had his authorisation despite bearing the seal of his office.

He informed the Aliyu Madaki-led committee that an investigation was already underway to determine how the letter was initiated and sent out, and that results of the investigation will be forwarded to the committee.

Fuel Scarcity: Ex-CBN director urges FG to repair refineries

Fuel now sells at N250 per litre in Enugu

According to him, the government would also earn foreign exchange from the importation of  refined products if the refineries are working at optimal level.

Dr Titus Okunronmu, a former Director, Budgetary Department, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Monday, advised the Federal Government to repair all the four refineries in the country.

Okunronmu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ota, Ogun, that the revamping of the nation’s refineries would increase domestic supply and end current scarcity of petroleum products.

According to him, the government would also earn foreign exchange from the importation of  refined products if the refineries are working at optimal level.

“By earning foreign exchange from importation of its refined products, the Federal Government would be able to diversify the economy effectively and create jobs for unemployed youths,’’ he said.

He also urged the government to halt export of crude oil so as to reduce borrowing and pressure on the nation’s currency.

In Enugu: EEDC begins clearing of network for improved power supply

Residents of Ijegun-Imore community protest 4-month power outage

A statement on Monday in Enugu by the company’s Head of Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said the clearance was to detect faults on its trunk lines

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) says it has commenced the clearing of its network for improved electricity supply to its consumers in the southeast.

A statement on Monday in Enugu by the company’s Head of Communications, Mr Emeka Ezeh, said the clearance was to detect faults on its trunk lines.

Ezeh said that the company would also install additional 500 transformers before the end of January, adding that over 80 of the transformers had been deployed and commissioned.

“EEDC uses this opportunity to appreciate its esteemed customers for their support and understanding during 2017 and reassures them of its continued effort in ensuring a better customer experience in 2018,’’ he said.

Ezeh cautioned residents of the zone against indiscriminate bush burning during the dry season to avoid unsafe acts that could result to electrical accidents or fire outbreaks.

“There is need for them to stay safe and exercise care, especially as we have moved into extreme dry season,’’ he said.
