Anambra Central Re-Run: Don’t Waste Tax Payers Money, PDP Urges INEC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to proceed with the proposed January 13 rerun election for Anambra Central Senatorial District.

The Chairman of PDP in the state, Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu, said on Monday in Awka that the election would be a nullity as the seat in question was not vacant.

Nwobu said that INEC which was supposed to be an unbiased umpire in the process, should be fair and not decide to uphold one court judgment and jettison the other.

According to him, the March 2015 election and victory of the PDP have not been invalidated by any court.

The chairman advised INEC not to spend tax payers’ money on an election that would not stand the test of time.

He said the vacancy of Anambra seat in the National Assembly was internal to the PDP over who was the valid candidate, noting that the issue had been laid to rest with December 13 High Court judgment.

“PDP was declared the winner in the election and certificate of return was issued to Sen. Uche Ekwunife, and she was there for more than a year.

“Her victory was contested by Chief Victor Umeh of APGA that he should have been declared winner having won the highest number of votes.

“The votes were recounted and Ekwunife’s victory was upheld before Umeh proceeded to the Court of Appeal and Sen. Ekwunife lost the seat on the grounds that she was not validly nominated.

“While the Court of Appeal ruled that there should be a rerun based on post-election matters, a Federal High Court has ruled that Dr Obiora Okonkwo of the PDP is the valid candidate of the PDP and should be sworn in,’’ Nwobu said.

“INEC should not descend into the arena because that is what its body language suggests; there is still a matter on this election in the Supreme Court.

“Why is INEC in a haste, are they an interested party? They should appeal and vacate the judgment first.

“INEC is a strong stakeholder in our democracy and an agent of government, it should remain neutral and not obey one judgment and disobey the other.’’

Nwobu urged INEC to purge itself of any form of partisanship as its body language suggests, adding that they could not in good conscience disobey the judgment of the court.

“Election is a very expensive venture; INEC should not spend tax payers’ money on a needless election, it will amount to waste of resources because based on facts, it cannot be a valid exercise,” he said.

Also, Dr Obiora Okonkwo, candidate of the PDP demanded that INEC issue him a Certificate of Return, adding that the seat was not vacant.

Matthew Ashimolowo: UK newspaper criticises Nigerian pastor’s lavish lifestyle

UK newspaper criticises Matthew Ashimolowo’s lavish lifestyle

The Kingsway International Christian Centre pastor is facing serious accusations from a UK newspaper. Daddy Freeze has also weighed in.

Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo has been criticised by a UK newspaper for his lavish lifestyle.

The tabloid is accusing the pastor of making £6.3million-a-year through the members of his church, Kingsway International Christian Centre.

An investigation was carried out by the UK Sun and reported in an article titled “GOD DELUSION: Mega-rich pastors living in million pound homes prey on believers with claims of curing deadly diseases.”

It reads: “Pastor Ashimolowo’s church, Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) launched in 1992 from a rented hall has £16.4m in assets, £500,000 in the bank and rakes in more than £8m in revenue a year.”

“KICC — which mainly operates in Walthamstow and the recently-acquired ‘Prayer City’ building in Chatham, Kent — takes £6.3m a year from tithing, where the congregation gives up 10 percent of its salary."

“The church also has an army of 1,000 volunteers who provide it with more than 300,000 hours of free labor, worth more than £2m-a-year.

“But while claiming to ‘pass on his riches’ Ashimolowo — described as the church’s ‘founder, visionary and senior pastor’ — lives rent-free in a £1.1m nine-bedroom home in Romford, Essex, owned by the church.”

The preacher was also accused of using church money for birthday parties and other luxuries.

It read: “Ashimolowo has previously been found by the Charity Commission to have used church funds to pay for a £120,000 birthday party for himself at a London hotel, a £80,000 new Mercedes and a £13,000 Florida timeshare.

He was also paid around £50,000-a-year by the church for ‘pastoral services’ before the 2005 probe found he had flouted charity rules by being a trustee and paying himself a salary.”

Other accusations directed at Pastor Ashimolowo

The publication calls out the Nigerian preacher for his troubles with the law.

It said: “The Charity Commission found there had been ‘serious misconduct and mismanagement’ of charity funds and told it to establish itself as a new charity with new trustees — which it did.

“More than £500,000 was also legally paid by the church to his own private companies including Matthew Ashimolowo Media Ministries which publishes books and DVDs of his teachings.

“Accounts show the publishing company raked in more than £2 million — making a profit of £877,000 — between 1999 and 2005 before it started filing less detailed financial statements under Companies House rules."

UK Sun also discusses Pastor Ashimolowo’s stance on tithing and wealth, while noting that the entire thing comes across as a ‘sales pitch.’

The Sun reporter named Richard Wheatstone who attended his service wrote, “The sermon, entitled ‘The Power of the Tithe’, listed 14 reasons why worshippers should donate 10 percent of their income to the church.

“Ashimolowo told the congregation: “If you do not pay the tithe, it is like you do not really trust God”. He labeled the money an “insurance against Satan” and warned of the dire consequences of non-payment."

“The millionaire — estimated to be worth around £6 million by Forbes magazine in 2011 — says refusal to hand over hundreds of pounds a month will be seen by God as “disobedience” and result in it making “impossible for him to release your harvest”.

“He added: “Tithe is a good indicator of where your heart is”. Around 1,000 worshippers — who will be followed by a second congregation of the day just minutes later — fill out payment forms and place them into buckets passed along the aisles.”

Daddy Freeze weighs in on Pastor Ashimolowo’s scandal

Cool FM On-Air personality, Daddy Freeze, has reacted to this new report by the UK newspaper.

He did this via his social media accounts saying, “God has started to vindicate him on his stand about “yahoo pastors.”

“He was abusing YOYOS the other day, now there is an article about him and his excesses, abusing church funds, as investigated by a U.K. Magazine!

“Come and carry your tithe pastor o! Chai see as my God dey vindicate me steady! Exposing their confusion. Just Google ‘God Delusion mega rich pastors living in million pound homes’ be careful not to laugh yourself to death.”

Between Pastor Ashimolowo and Daddy Freeze

In 2017, these two had a faceoff that started when the pastor lashed out at the OAP who has been preaching against tithes.

During a sermon, the preacher blasted Daddy Freeze by making reference to his failed marriage and calling him names.

He said: “Once and for all, let’s settle this matter on the power of the tithe. Some bunch of Yoyo somewhere should not determine what you pay.

Some guy who beats his wife throws her out, throws his children out of the house, broke his son’s knees, should not determine what we believe.

He drinks alcohol, sleeps with women and he’s trying to preach to preachers. He should just shut up because he is not qualified to speak on tithes.”

Daddy Freeze responded by sharing Biblical verses that support his no tithing campaign.

He said: “See the way he is defending tithing with so much passion; I hope this same passion is extended to bringing home our brothers who are currently enslaved in Libya. I didn’t hear ONE single bible verse, just sentiments, and emotions in this defense.

“Who is this ‘Yoyo’ now? Mention his name make we know am. And I hope there is proof to back these allegations up and they are not just ‘hearsay’ from a false interview conducted on an embattled pot of stale bitter leaf soup.

“Whoever the ‘yoyo’ is, one thing is certain, he cannot determine what the body of Christ believes, only the BIBLE can do that. So until you can come out with a superior argument to explain where Jesus, our high priest, or the disciples, our first pastors collected tithes, it looks like the ‘yoyo’ is the one speaking the biblical truth and no amount of subbing or name calling can override the scriptures…”

Daddy Freeze has been gaining a lot of attention for his #free the sheeple movement.

When it was the case of IPOB, soldiers were sent, why will Buhari send police to Benue – Nyiam

By Emmanuel Aziken
Former army intelligence officer, Colonel Tony Nyiam, Rtd. has flayed the Federal Government’s refusal to send soldiers after the Fulani herdsmen involved in the Benue killings as an act of double standard.

Noting that soldiers were deployed against agents of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Niger Delta militants among others, he said the hesitation to send soldiers after the heavily armed herdsmen stood truth in its head.
Nyiam spoke in a Channels Television interview on Monday.

Nyiam who compared the situation in Rivers State as comparable to that in Benue State even given that more people have died in Benue than in Rivers of recent, said that the deployment of soldiers helped in the tracking down and killing of the Rivers State kidnap kingpin, Johnson Igwedibia, who was known as Don Waney.

“There are double standards that we see here. Today, the cult guy in Rivers has been killed by the military because the military (troops) were sent in.

“Why will President Muhammadu Buhari send police to Benue, why not the military? When it was the case of the militants, soldiers were sent. When it was the case of IPOB, soldiers were sent.

“In the case of sophisticatedly armed invaders, mainly as said by the Kano State Governor (Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje) as foreigners, you send police, that is pure double-standard,” he said.

The security expert in questioning the policy framework in tackling the insecurity said:
“There is a failure at both the policy and operational levels,” Mr Nyiam said.

“At the policy level, you cannot use police action against sophisticated armed invaders of one’s community.”

It would be recalled that the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, had following his meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari last week blamed the killings in Benue on communal clashes, a view, Idris condemned Monday.

Sack CMDs Appointed By Jonathan, Group Urges Buhari

Jonathan, railway, Buhari, fuel scarcity, Urhobo

Abuja – A civil society organisation, Seventh Force, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sack all chief medical directors of health centres appointed by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The call was contained in a letter the group wrote to the President Buhari, dated January 8th, 2018.

Mr. Folarin Odusote, President of the Association said the removal of the CMDs will assist the Buhari administration in no little way to embark on the reform of all Federal Medical Centre, FMC, across the country.

The group accused the medical directors of sabotaging the efforts of the President to deliver on democracy dividends to the people.

Odusote alleged that the conduct of many, if not all the chief medical directors of these centres underscores the urgent need to sack them in order to address the hardship they put Nigerians through.

The group said it has diligently followed issues in the polity and have come to the conclusion that Nigerians are more concerned about the parlous state of healthcare delivery even more than security and economic issues.

“From the latest survey conducted by the Seventh Force, we have found that the Federal Medical Centres across the country have become death traps to Nigerians on account of how they are being run.

The group accused the CMDs of being involved in corruption, financial recklessness and abuse of public funds that have been repeatedly swept under the carpet because the Chief Medical Directors use their positions to silence would be whistleblowers who are often victimized until they comply to a code of silence instituted by them.

“In some instances, strikes called by unions are not unconnected with the corrupt acts they witness under the chief medical directors. This trend has been a bane of the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi to an extent that Nigerians are now questioning if such brazen incidence of sustained corruption could be taking place unchallenged under Your Excellency’s Presidency,” he also said.

The group said, “Majority of these Medical Directors have demonstrated the highest level of incompetence and ineptitude in the administration of the centres, which has resulted in the facilities being closed to the public for extended period of time owing to industrial actions by workers’ unions, shortage of consumables and other ills that are inimical to their ability to meet the healthcare needs of Nigerians.

“The Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi has become the classical example and proof that Mr. President cannot continue to harbour agents of darkness and expect that the health sector can function optimally. They are acting as deliberate saboteurs to ruin the administration,” Odusote said.

Tech: Copenhagen's new $640 million power plant will have a ski slope on its roof — take a look

An artistic rendering of the ARC waste management and energy plant in Copenhagen, Denmark.

One of the most anticipated buildings of 2018 is BIG's ARC energy-to-waste plant in Copenhagen. It will feature a 1,969-foot-long ski slope.

Power and waste management plants are usually kept outside major cities so that residents don't have to see the plumes of smoke or smell burning trash.

Copenhagen's new energy plant designed by Bjarke Ingels Group is a little different — it's both sustainable and an incredible piece of architecture. Dubbed the Amager Resource Center (ARC), the building will turn trash into power that will then go to the city's grid. When it goes live later this year, it will generate less CO2 than the city's former plant, too.

The plant's unique design doesn't stop there. It will also feature a nearly 2,000-foot-long ski slope and the world's tallest artificial climbing wall.

Take a look below.

Three miles northeast of downtown Copenhagen, the city's waste-to-energy plant will open in summer 2018.

Instead of smoke plumes, the plant will blow smoke rings, according to its architects from Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG).

Visitors will be able to ski down the plant's 1,969-foot-long slope, and climb its 9,537-square-foot climbing wall (which will be the tallest in the world).

In the first year, around 57,000 people are expected to use the ski slope. A recreation area with water sports, soccer fields, and a go-kart track surrounds the building.

The ARC will power 62,500 homes and provide 160,000 homes with hot water in the Danish capital.

Source: Inhabitat

The giant claw pictured below will grab trash …

… before it goes to an incinerator.

With the plant, Copenhagen will be able to reuse 90% of its metal waste, totaling 10,000 tons per year.

The $643 million building will be the world's most efficient waste burning and energy-generating plant in the world.

Compared to the city's former plant, the ARC will be able to generate 25% more energy from the same amount of waste. It will also emit 100,000 fewer tons of CO2.

The project is part of Copenhagen's plan to become the world's first zero-carbon capital city by 2025.

The designers' goal is to redefine "the relationship between the waste plant and the city."

Otaru Of Auchi Admonishes Traditional Rulers On Justice

Auchi

Benin – The Otaru of Auchi, Alhaji Aliru H. Momoh, Ikelebe III, on Monday, admonished traditional rulers across the country to make truth and justice their watchword in the New Year.

He reminded them that administration of justice in their domains would foster peace, progress and economic development that will enhance the well being of their subjects.

The Otaru gave the charge while speaking at the 21st Annual Auchi Day Celebration of Allah Most High held at the palace grounds in Auchi, Edo State.

Otaru said the traditional rulers have been saddled with the enormous responsibility of administering justice in their various domains without minding whose horse is gorged, noting that they are next to God based on their positions and roles in the society.

According to him, the problems militating against the country today “is because we have allowed injustice to thrive unchecked.

“Traditional rulers are next to the Almighty God because He has given us the earth to take care of and what we need to do is to ensure that justice prevails in whatever we do bearing in mind that justice has no boundary. Justice does not have father, brother or sister.

“So, whatever we do, we must ensure that justice prevails. The problems we are facing today is because of injustice. Therefore, as traditional rulers, we have it as our own responsibility to ensure justice is served to everyone without minding who is involved.”

Speaking also, the Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki while congratulating the people of Auchi on a successful hosting of this year’s event said they must promote the culture of peace for rapid economic development of the people.

The governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Hon. Mariam Abubakar said the government has bent on driving the economic of the state through agriculture and that the people of the community should make effort to key into the programme.

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Chairman of the of the occasion, Chief Omamofe Boyo, expressed satisfaction at the dimension the annual event has taken in grooming the children in Quran recitation.

Tech: Diane Kruger's new movie won the Golden Globe for best foreign film — and it was so emotionally devastating she couldn't work for 6 months

Diane Kruger.

Diane Kruger's movie "In the Fade" won a Golden Globe, and the Oscar hype for her performance builds.

  • Diane Kruger talked about her career-defining performance in "In the Fade," which won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film.
  • She could earn an Oscar nomination for the role.
  • The actress prepared for the role for six months leading up to filming.
  • She made the movie during the "darkest time" in her life as her stepfather had recently died.

German actress Diane Kruger has built an impressive career, but after working steadily for 16 years, her new movie is getting her recognition she never thought she'd ever receive.

On Sunday, "In the Fade" (now playing in theaters) won the Golden Globe for best foreign language film. From German filmmaker Fatih Akin, it's highlighted by Kruger's tour-de-force performance. Playing Katja Sekerci, whose life collapses when her husband and son are victims of a terrorist bombing, we follow Katja as she takes illegal drugs to numb the pain, and then sitting in court to watch the two suspects, who turn out to be neo-Nazis, go through the trial for the bombing. That's when things get even more intense for Katja.

When Business Insider sat down with Kruger at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, she didn't hold back when talking about the pain she dealt with to pull off this gut-wrenching performance, which won her the best actress prize at this year's Cannes Film Festival and garnered instant Oscar buzz.

Jason Guerrasio: How did you connect with Fatih Akin? Did you know him?

Diane Kruger: No, I was just a fan. He's a big director in Germany — I grew up with his films. So when I became an actress and I left Germany 25 years ago, I always waited for this part to come out of Germany. I mean, I don't have an agent there, so I never get any offers from there. Five years ago, I was a jury member at Cannes, and he had a documentary playing there, so I went to his party to meet him. I told him I loved his work and if he ever wanted to make a movie with me, that would be amazing. So years later, he remembered and called me.

Guerrasio: Did he talk to you over the phone about the part, or did he ask if he could send the script over?

Kruger: He kind of told me what it was about, and then he said he didn't want to send me the script — he wanted to come and meet me. So he came to Paris to meet me. And I was really nervous because I didn't think, upon meeting me, that he would think that I'm right for this part. This isn't typically the part I get offered. [Laughs.] And just judging from his voice over the phone, I don't think he was 100% sure I could do it either. So he came to my house, and I wore no makeup, and I really tried to dress down and be as raw as possible, and we just had this amazing talk. And I told him I was really, really scared of this part. I told him I wasn't sure I could do it.

Guerrasio: But at the same time, was this a role you had been wishing for? Something to show your range?

Kruger: I just knew something felt right. I was really scared. Fatih told me I couldn't take another role until we shot this because he wanted me to prep for it. I mean, he is known for casting unknowns in his movies, so I think he got a lot of backlash at first for casting me. But I jumped off that cliff with him. It was a lonely time prepping for the movie. I didn't do anything else. I was living in Germany, meeting with victims of families that weren't necessarily suffering from terrorist attacks but murder and other brutal things, and I just allowed myself to be overcome by the grief that I felt.

Guerrasio: And this is the first German-produced movie you've ever starred in?

Kruger: That's right.

Guerrasio: That's surprising. Was that because you got into modeling so early in your life?

Kruger: I left when I was 16, and I wasn't an actress then.

Guerrasio: So was there a feeling with this movie that you wanted to be a part of something to show your talents to your home country?

Kruger: Yes and no. I wanted to do a German film that felt really German but also had an international presence. And Fatih, who is German but of Turkish descent, he himself has an international flavor. And this movie has such a universal feel. The focus is neo-Nazis, but it could have been jihadis, just some crazy person, whatever.

Guerrasio: I think Americans will certainly relate to this movie. The grieving mother is universal.

Kruger: Exactly.

Guerrasio: What did you want to get out of meeting victims? Did you take notes? Did you just want to interact with them?

Kruger: I guess the one thing I will never forget is that energy. More than individual stories, there was this energy that mothers especially having lost children had that I wasn't quite prepared to really take on. It was a wall of blackness. And that's regardless of how long ago it happened or how much or how little they talked to me about it — that energy was there. And it got more intense as time went on and the more people I met.

Guerrasio: How long were you talking to victims?

Kruger: I started six months before shooting started.

Guerrasio: Wow. Did it get to a point where you felt you had enough and just wanted to get started with shooting?

Kruger: Yeah. There definitely came a point where I was like, I can't take it anymore. And, unfortunately, when we started to film, my stepdad passed away. So honestly, it was probably the darkest time in my life, having to play that much grief and then coming home and feeling that on a personal level. It's a personal film because of that. We also shot in order, so you can imagine the first three weeks were just awful. There were scenes when I didn't even feel like I was acting. There were moments when I felt this movie is going to break me. I couldn't work for six months afterwards. I can still feel it.

Guerrasio: So you haven't been able to kick this character yet?

Kruger: I still dream about it. I feel like a little bit is always going to be with me. What I take away most of it is this connection with people talking about loss. The empathy I felt — and maybe because we live in a time where these stories have become so common, but I'm reminded of how many Katjas every week are being created. I sometimes just sit in front of the TV, and I just sob uncontrollably.

Guerrasio: Has doing a role like this changed the parts you want to take on going forward in your career?

Kruger: To be honest, the two films I'm working on right now I signed on before "In the Fade" came out, and I haven't taken anything since. I'm sort of debating what I want to do next.

Guerrasio: Is it hard to promote this film, seeing as you have to continue talking about the process of creating this character, which obviously wasn't pleasant?

Kruger: No, I want to. I think it's a very important film in my life. I feel it's my baby. I've never been invested in anything like this. I think it's an inspiring movie. In Cannes, which was the first time I saw it with an audience, I was so taken aback by the reaction. There must be pictures of me just looking shocked. It's weird because, in the past, people have come up to me and said they love my work, like for "Inglourious Basterds," but I feel this is my first big starring role.

The Ancient Kano City Walls: A testimony of forgotten era

Kano City Walls

He would write in a 1903 report about the Kano Walls that he had "never seen anything like it in Africa."

Behold the Ancient City Walls of Kano.

Described, at a time, as "the most impressive monument in West Africa," the Ancient City Walls of Kano were defensive walls built to protect the lives inhabiting the city of Kano.

Built in the year 1095 through 1134 and completed in the middle of the 14th century, the wall, during those days, did not only serve as a fortress of protection to the people of Kano, it was also a source of pride to them.

The construction of the Ancient City Wall’s foundation was laid by Sarki Gijimasu, the third king in the chronicle of Kano, in 1095. But it will take another three hundred years to complete the wall, during the reign of Zamnagawa.

Be that as it may, the wall would be further expanded to their present position two hundred years after its initial completion.

Now known as a tourist attraction, the Ancient Kano City Wall which was built to provide security for the then growing population of Kano is a 14km radius earth structure with gates as old as the wall itself.

It was these gates that were used to control the movement of people in and out of the city.

Each of the gates used to have a gatekeeper known as (Sarkin Kofar) and houses were provided for them and their families inside or around the gate: It is said that in those days whenever the gatekeepers saw enemies advancing towards the city, they would rush to inform the king, and he would arrange his armies to meet them.

Eight hundred and eight years after the foundation of the wall was laid, the ancient city of Kano was captured by the then General-Governor of the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, Lord Fredrick Lugard, alongside his British forces.

He would write in a 1903 report about the Kano Walls that he had "never seen anything like it in Africa."

However, the Ancient Kano City Walls which used to guard the city is no longer outside Kano city as they were in those days.

They are now inside the city and this has made it possible for people to constantly tamper with the walls, in the course of developmental activities and congestion in the area.

Even ditches that were made close to the walls in other to make it difficult for invaders to get through before mounting the walls have been turned to ponds where the walls are sited inside Kano city.

Sadly, part of the walls can be said to be largely in ruins… but this does not alter the fact that the Ancient Kano City Walls and other associated sites still retain their spiritual, historical and cultural significance.

There is no telling how long the walls have left to stand. What can be said is that it is advisable for every lover of art and culture to find time to get a view of the Ancient Kano City Walls before that which is left of it is lost to the careless hands of Westernization.

2019: APC Can’t Afford To Lose S’East, S’South – Oyegun

APC, Oyegun, Buhari

Abuja – National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Monday said that the fate of the party during the 2019 elections will be decided by its performance in the South East and South South geopolitical zones in relation to votes.

Odigie-Oyegun, who expressed sadness and shock over the loss of the Anambra election by the party, noted that the APC had what it takes to win the Anambra election, but is surprising that the party lost.az

Such electoral disaster he said should never befall the APC in the South-South and South-East in the next general elections, and therefore, the party has decided to put its house in order to avert a repeat of such.

Oyegun, who spoke while inaugurating a four-man strategic committee to conduct a forensic investigation on the circumstances that led to the woeful performance of the party during the recently concluded Anambra governorship elections, said the two geopolitical zones will play a crucial role in the party’s victory in the 2019 general election.

His words: “The South East and the South South will be crucial and critical to our victory in 2019. Not from the point of view of numbers of votes because we are fairly confident that having gone through our initial planning that the APC would carry the day in 2019.

“But for us, it is critical that the South East and South South zones, which have contributed immensely to the survival of this nation and so, must fully be represented in what is going to be a truly national government of the APC in 2019,” he added.

Oyegun said drawing experience from the results from the Anambra election, it is necessary for the party to start on time to plan for future election and ensure that what must have gone wrong during the Anambra elections did not repeat itself.

“Today (Monday) we are inaugurating a strategic committee and the mandate is for you, Chief Niyi Adebayo and your team to do a forensic examination of what could have gone wrong; why did we not do as well as we expected; what were the factors that contributed to our low score.

“We did much better compare to the 2015, no question about that; but in all fairness, given the work we put in and given the reactions of the public and the rest of it there was no question at all that we ought to have done a lot better. So, the question today is why. It is important that we are using Anambra as a trigger.

“The terms of reference was drafted and appropriately worded to give you the scope to look at the possibilities of God forbid a repetition of what happened in Anambra in other state in the South East.

“We want to start early; we want to strategize early; we want to plan early; we want to be confident that after we have done our field work and the reward from the field work is commensurate with the efforts that we have put in.

“I want to be partisan here, we want a situation where we will win handsomely in the South-East. For the South-South, the circumstances are slightly different. But we are going to have the same type of strategic team for the South-South.

“The issues are different, the environment is different, the circumstances is different, but it is necessary also that we building the South-South into the national power framework that we expect to emerge in 2019. So, l want to thank you gentlemen for accepting this onerous assignment,” he said.

Responding, Chairman of the Committee and former Ekiti state Governor, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, assured the party that the Committee will meet all stakeholders in the state with a view to finding out what actually led to the loss and proffer solution which will help the party in subsequent election.

Ignore AGF’s Memo Seeking Change Of Name For Maritime Varsity, Activist Tells NASS

AGF, Abacha, Abubakar Malami, Switzerland

Oleh – A Niger Delta Peace Advocate and Youth Leader, Comrade Shedrack Agediga, has urged the National Assembly to ignore the memo from Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami SAN seeking to change name of Nigerian Maritime University.

Speaking on the AGF’s memo, which he termed evil, Agediga warned that the directive seeking to change the NMU’s name from Okerenkoko to Okerenghigho, was capable of causing strive and bloodshed among the Ijaws and Itsekiris.

He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to, as a matter of urgency, call on the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Malami SAN, to order regarding his memo of discord and withdraw it in the interest of national security.

Comrade Agediga, who stated this during a press briefing in Warri, Delta State noted that the action of the AGF was a clear invitation to avoidable crisis in the Niger Delta region that had enjoyed relative peace for some time and boosted crude oil production.

He said the AGF’s memo for a change of name of the Maritime University would further plunge the region into another round of crisis particularly in Warri South West between the Ijaws and the Itsekiris.

Agediga recalled that few months back the region was embroiled in crisis due to the resurgence of militant activities which brought crude oil production to its lowest ebb but took the intervention of well meaning leaders, PANDEF including state governors to stabilise the situation before production hit an all time high.

The Niger Delta Youth Leader emphasised that President Buhari’s hands were full with security issues such as the Fulani and herdsmen clashes, Boko Haram in the North East, IPOB in the South East aside kidnapping among others hence it was needless for the AGF to foment another serious crisis via his memo to the National Assembly to change the ancestral name of where the Maritime University was sited.

He said Gbaramatu Kingdom and Delta State should not be used as a theatre of war or a base to test newly acquired military software and urged the National Assembly to ignore the evil memo which was capable on causing strive and bloodshed among the people.

The activist maintained that the National Assembly should summon the AGF on the matter as it was the height of injustice and abuse of public office as the action of some public office holders was inimical to peace and development.

“The action of the AGF is unnecessary, predetermined and a call for anarchy and must not be allowed to happen, while we must stop those persons who deliberately create crisis in the Niger Delta region in order to militarize our communities and create the impression that the region is not safe for development.”

Nvidia's stock price is rallying after the company kicked off CES with the first keynote and a string of new products and partnerships.

Nvidia is trading up 3.13% at $222.05 a share on Monday after the company announced a partnership with Uber, new autonomous driving chips, and new gaming displays.

In the first speech of this year's CES, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced a new partnership with Uber. The ride-hailing company has been working on developing self-driving cars and selected Nvidia as its artificial intelligence and autonomous driving technology provider.

In the same speech, Huang said that an update to the company's self-driving technology will begin delivering this quarter. The "Drive" series of chips were hailed as a way for car makers to eliminate a trunk full of computers in their self-driving cars.

The new Xavier chip is what Nvidia calls "the world's most powerful system on a chip" is set to go out to customers this quarter, and should provide a speed and power consumption upgrade over previous generations.

Nvidia got its start in gaming and didn't leave its most loyal customers out of the keynote. The company announced new "Big Format Gaming Displays," which combine giant monitors with improved refresh rates needed for better gaming performance. Several companies are working on incorporating Nvidia's tech into their displays, and they are expected to be available this summer.

The company also revealed that its streaming-game platform will be available to most Windows-based computers in an open beta format. The platform allows users to run high-end video games on Nvidia's machines, and stream the game to any computer with minimal lag. The idea is that users will be able to play games on their computers, even if they aren't wielding the latest graphics card and processor.

"We believe there were numerous incremental takeaways on recent growth and potential new C18/F19 product activity," Craig Ellis, an analyst at B. Riley, said of the keynote, on Monday.

Nvidia is up 106.4% over the last year.

Sports: 18 under-the-radar young athletes who could hit the big time in 2018

Daniel Dubois.

2018's young athletes to watch out for include the son of a football icon, the next Conor McGregor, and the best college basketball player on the planet.

Sports fans are always looking for the next big thing, whether it's a footballer like Neymar, a basketball player like LeBron James, or a boxer who will measure up to Anthony Joshua.

Business Insider has compiled a list of young, under-the-radar athletes who look set to make waves in the ring, on the court, or on the pitch in 2018.

From the "next Conor McGregor" to the new "face of snowboarding," the athletes could become the biggest thing in their respective sports.

Ranked by age from oldest to youngest, scroll down to see 18 under-the-radar young athletes who we expect to hit the big time in 2018.

Mackenzie Dern, 24 — The American bringing expert jiu-jitsu to UFC.

Age: 24

Sport: Cage fighting

Profile: Once a highly-decorated athlete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Dern is beginning to take the wider mixed martial arts industry by storm.

She has won five cage fights in a row and is due to contest her first UFC bout on March 3.

Here's Dern using stand-up to knock Mandy Polk to the ground, before locking in a tight rear naked choke submission at LFA 24 in 2017.

Ōtani Shōhei, 23 — Japan's Babe Ruth, who has a record-breaking 102.5mph pitch.

Age: 23

Sport: Baseball

Profile: Shōhei began his career playing for the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters in 2013.

Before he left for MLB team Los Angeles Angels in 2017, he won the 2016 Japan Series title, a number of MVP awards, and recorded the fastest pitch in Japanese baseball history at 102.5 mph.

His transfer to the Angels is set to take his career to the next level and, in the video below, you can see exactly why he is known as the "Japanese Babe Ruth."

Mattie Rogers, 22 — An American record-setter who can already lift twice her bodyweight.

Age: 22

Sport: Weightlifting

Profile: Rogers has strength and power that belies her age as she already holds the United States record in the snatch (106kg), clean & jerk (134kg), and total (239kg) lift in her weight class (69kg).

The Floridian has tremendous technique and though she missed out on qualifying for the 2016 Olympic Games, she was the best lifter at the National Championships and Olympic Trials.

She won a bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships (video below) and, as she gets older, she will only get stronger.

Ester Ledecká, 22 — The Czech who dominates in TWO winter sports.

Age: 22

Sport: Snowboarder and alpine skiier.

Profile: One sport isn't enough for Ledecká to excel in, and she competes in two.

She is a two-time gold medalist at the Snowboard World Championships, regularly scores top 30 finishes in downhill, super-G, and alpine skiing, and is certainly one to watch at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Here's the sort of speed she can reach racing downhill on her snowboard.

Maverick Viñales, 22 — The Spanish MotoGP talent challenging Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez.

Age: 22

Sport: MotoGP

Profile: Move over Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez, because there's a new kid on the starting block.

Viñales spent little time racing through the motorcycle divisions. In 2013 he won the Moto3 world title and, just two years later, won the best rookie award in the MotoGP class.

Since racing in MotoGP, the motorcycle equivalent of Formula 1, Viñales continues to increase his seasonal points haul and looks set to challenge for the 2018 title.

Here, you can find out what it is like riding on board with Viñales.

Aaron Pico, 21 — The young American being talked up as the next Conor McGregor.

Age: 21

Sport: Cage fighting

Profile: Renowned fight promoter Scott Coker told Business Insider last year that Aaron Pico was the "greatest prospect in the history of mixed martial arts."

Pico has it all. He has wrestled since he was four years old, he learned jiu-jitsu under submission expert Eddie Bravo, and was taught boxing by Manny Pacquiao's coach Freddie Roach.

Disaster struck in his mixed martial arts debut as he lost to Zach Freeman at Bellator 180 in June, 2017. However, he bounced back by knocking out Justin Linn with soul-stealing blows at Bellator 183 in September (video below).

2018 will be a huge year for Pico as Coker expects the youngster will blossom into the next Conor McGregor.

Mason Crane, 20 — The spin bowler who will be an English cricket staple for years to come.

Age: 20

Sport: Cricket

Profile: A leg-spin bowler, Crane is a hot property right now as he was called up to England's Test squad for the Ashes and made his debut in the fifth Test against Australia on January 4.

Crane bowled 17 overs in Australia's first innings, admitted his "emotions were everywhere" in The Independent, but won praise from Australian fast bowler Pat Cummings: "He's similar to a lot of young leggies, gives the ball a rip, landing it pretty well."

Here's what to expect from Crane's bowling in the future, as he takes three wickets in this clip.

Daniel Dubois, 20 — The English heavyweight who will be a future Anthony Joshua opponent.

Age: 20

Sport: Boxing

Profile: Boxing rookie Daniel Dubois signed a contract with fight promoter Frank Warren in 2017. That year, he won his first six fights in a row — all by knockout.

Business Insider understands that Warren sees Dubois as his answer to world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua and if Dubois keeps winning in the coming years, it will not be long before their paths cross and they come to blows.

Dubois won a regional title, the Southern Area heavyweight belt, with this thumping performance against AJ Carter in September, 2017.

Jelena Ostapenko, 20 — The Latvian tennis star who could add to her major honours in 2018.

Age: 20

Sport: Tennis

Profile: Ostapenko claimed a number of notable scalps in 2017 including Caroline Wozniacki, Simona Halep, and Garbiñe Muguruza.

She won the 2017 French Open, ended the year with a world rank of seven, and won praise from former British number one Tim Henman.

Last year, Henman told Business Insider that Ostapenko's win in Paris was "amazing," and that a few women's tennis stars were fancying their chances while former world number one Serena Williams took time out to give birth.

Ostapenko ended the year by defeating Williams in an exhibition match. The highlights are below.

Ryan Garcia, 19 — The American who is the most important Golden Boy signing since Canelo Alvarez.

Age: 19

Sport: Boxing

Profile: Ryan Garcia has a TV-friendly fighting style, fast hands, and can pack a punch.

A 15-time national champion as an amateur, Garcia's hot streak in the unpaid ranks has carried over as a professional as he is unbeaten in 13 fights, has signed with powerful promoter Golden Boy Promotions, and is seen by ESPN as the "most important [Golden Boy] signing since Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez" in 2010.

Garcia competes in a talent-rich division at super featherweight but it will not be long before he breaks into the top 10.

This 30-second knockout win in September highlights his skill set.

Christian Pulisic, 19 — The attacking midfielder close to a Real Madrid or FC Barcelona transfer.

Age: 19

Sport: Football

Profile: Attacking midfielder Christian Pulisic is enjoying a remarkable rise in the Borussia Dortmund first team.

Pulisic has returned three goals, one assist, and has been responsible for creating 16 key passes so far this season.

Though he won't feature in the 2018 FIFA World Cup as USA failed to qualify, the year could still be a big one for Pulisic as Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos believes the teenager is "one move away" from being able to play for Real, FC Barcelona, or "one of the big Premier League clubs," according to Goal.com.

Pulisic won Bundesliga's Goal of the Month award for December with this frenetic-paced two-touch finish against Hoffenheim.

Marvin Bagley III, 18 — The Duke University power forward who is the best college basketball player on the planet.

Age: 18

Sport: Basketball

Profile: American basketball phenom Marvin Bagley III is considered the most dominant college-level player on the planet.

At just 18, Bagley has put up dominant numbers like 21.9 points per game on average, 1.6 assists per game, and 11.6 rebounds. He has tremendous reflexes, ball-handling, and will be a star pick in the 2018 NBA Draft.

Trick shot, or an eagle-eyed opportunist? Watch this clip from a match in December and decide.

Luka Dončić, 18 — The young Latvian following the footsteps of New York Knicks center Kristaps Porziņģis.

Age: 18

Sport: Basketball

Profile: Luka Dončić will rival Marvin Bagley III as the number one pick for the 2018 NBA Draft.

Dončić has a unique versatility to his game, can dribble with both hands, and has sharp on-court intelligence. He can pass, shoot, and score from range.

As an Eastern European player who began his career in Spain and will likely end up at a big NBA side, it is likely Dončić is treading a similar path to success as New York Knicks center Kristaps Porziņģis.

In this clip, Slovenian star Dončić dominates Latvia with a 27-point display.

Justin Kluivert, 18 — The young Dutch winger who is a reported transfer target for Manchester United.

Age: 18

Sport: Football

Profile: You might recognise Justin Kluivert's surname. He is, indeed, the son of former Champions League winning striker Patrick Kluivert, who was the Netherlands' all-time top scorer from 2003-2013.

Following in the family footsteps, Justin Kluivert is beginning his career at Ajax and already has set tongues wagging. He is even a reported target for Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, according to the Manchester Evening News.

In November 2017, Kluivert scored a hat-trick in Ajax's 5-1 victory over Roda JC in the Eredivisie — the Dutch equivalent of the Premier League.

But, for the rest of the season, he may score no goal finer than this worldie one month later in December — pick that one out!

Marcus Smith, 18 — The English fly half already returning Man of the Match performances in rugby union.

Age: 18

Sport: Rugby Union

Profile: Former England rugby captain Chris Robshaw recently told Business Insider that Marcus Smith is an up-and-coming prospect he expects to see progress further at international level in 2018.

The fly-half made his professional debut for Harlequins in September 2017 and, just two weeks later, returned a Man-of-the-Match performance against Wasps in the Aviva Premiership.

Wasps fly-half Danny Cipriani explains what makes Smith so special here.

Rasmus Dahlin, 17 — The generational talent who isn't even old enough to drink.

Age: 17

Sport: Ice hockey

Profile: Rasmus Dahlin plays as a defenceman for Frölunda HC in the Swedish Hockey League.

What makes Dahlin so remarkable is that he is 6 foot 2, 185 pounds, and establishing himself as a generational talent — and he's not yet old enough to drink.

Dahlin is regarded to be the top eligible pick for the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and be the first Sweden-born player to go first in the draft since 1989.

His tremendous puck control is there for all to see in this short clip.

Vinicius Júnior, 17 — The Brazilian who cost Real Madrid €45 million in 2017.

Age: 17

Sport: Football

Profile: Everybody in football looks for the next big thing. The next Ronaldo, the next Messi, and the next Neymar.

At 17, it is too early to tell whether Vinicius Júnior is the next big thing but Real Madrid certainly has faith that he is. The club, after all, spent €45 million on his transfer in 2017.

Currently on loan at Flamengo, Vinicius Júnior scored four times in the Brazilian team's march to the Copa Sudamericana final.

He is used sparingly, more frequently starting games on the bench than on the pitch, but Real will be keeping close tabs on how the striker develops this year considering the level of investment it has already made.

In this clip from August last year, Vinicius Júnior managed to repeat Romário's famous goal against Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier in 1993.

Chloe Kim, 17 — The American who is already seen as the face of snowboarding.

Age: 17

Sport: Snowboarding

Profile: Chloe Kim has already chairlifted her way to the summit of professional surfboarding.

The teenager became the first person under 16 to win a hat-trick of gold medals at an X Games and continues to pick up individual awards.

She missed out on the 2014 Winter Olympics as she was too young, but has qualified for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang as she links up with the US Snowboarding Team.

Kim is certainly one to watch. It is not uncommon to hear commentators call her the future, or even the current face, of the sport (watch below).
