In Niger: DPR office gutted by fire

Minna DPR office gutted by fire

The cause of fire has not been ascertained but preliminary investigation shows that it may have been caused by an electrical fault.

Three office rooms at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) in Minna, Niger State, were gutted by fire on Tuesday, February 6, 2018.

The Niger Coordinator of the department, Abdullahi Isa, disclosed this while conducting journalists round the affected offices.

He said the fire affected the Internet, Accounts Department, Head of Gas and Down Stream offices.

He added that "a neighbour vulcanizer rushed to notify the Head of Inspection that he noticed smoke coming from one of the offices.

"The fire started around 3.30 a.m. when most of the staff have gone for monitoring.

"Though the cause of the fire is being investigated, preliminary report shows that it may be as a result of electrical fault."

He said that the fire caused one of the batteries powering the inverter to explode, resulting in serious damage.

Isa explained that prompt intervention by officials of the state fire service prevented the fire from escalating.

He added that some vital equipment and documents were damaged in the incident.

Strategy: Gisele Bundchen's actions after Tom Brady lost the Super Bowl holds an important lesson about how to treat your partner

Gisele Bundchen, pictured above with Tom Brady, told her kids, "You have to let someone else win sometimes."

Gisele Bundchen congratulated the Eagles on winning the Super Bowl, even after her husband Tom Brady's team, the Patriots, had lost.

  • Gisele Bundchen is a supermodel married to Tom Brady, the quarterback for the Patriots.
  • Bundchen displayed a positive, supportive attitude after the Patriots lost the Super Bowl.
  • Experts have said that supporting your partner during setbacks can be crucial for a strong relationship

Your spouse's attitude toward your job can make or break your career.

It looks like Tom Brady — the quarterback for the Patriots — has nothing to worry about. His wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, stayed positive after the Patriots lost Sunday's Super Bowl and Brady had a personal upset, missing a catch when he was the receiver in a trick play.

Bundchen posted on Instagram: "Congratulations Eagles for winning the Super bowl, what a game that was!" She went on to commend the Patriots for "giving their best" and Brady for investing so much time and effort "to become the best in what you do."

She even went so far as to personally congratulate every Eagles player she saw after the game, Yahoo's Dan Wetzel reported. "They looked star struck," Wetzel tweeted.

Bundchen also seized the opportunity to teach her kids a lesson in good sportsmanship.

According to USA Today, when their 5-year-old daughter Vivan realized the Eagles had won, Bundchen said: "Just this time. Daddy won five times. They never won before. Their whole life, they never won a Super Bowl. You have to let someone else win sometimes."

Bundchen's upbeat attitude after this Super Bowl marks a sharp departure from her remarks after the big game six years ago, when she was heard blaming the receivers for dropping passes: "My husband cannot f—— throw the ball and catch the ball at the same time."

Brady, however, has long seen his wife as a good influence on him. "She is the most positive and energetic person I have ever met," he told Vanity Fair in 2009. "She always looks at challenges as her greatest opportunities."

In fall 2017, Bundchen posted an Instagram photo of her with Brady's mother, Galynn, who has cancer: "So proud of this beautiful warrior! I love you so much sweet Galynn."

Bundchen's supportiveness recalls something Alexandra Solomon, a psychologist at Northwestern University, previously told Business Insider. The most important thing a long-term relationship needs in order to be successful, she said, is "two people who are able to competently handle all of the sh– that hits the fan."

That is to say, you don't just want a partner who's there for you when things are going smoothly. You want someone to rely on when the going gets rough.

Perhaps Bundchen is learning from her reading, which Vanity Fair reported includes the teachings of Buddhist master Thich Nhat Hanh.

Bundchen told Vanity Fair that her reading has helped give her a sense of inner peace. She said: "You have this kind of epiphany — I don't need to sweat the small stuff! Enjoy the journey, not the destination."

Casting Out Demons: Little girl's face severely burnt after dangerous ritual cleansing

Two sisters were arrested for inflicting third-degree burns on a five-year-old girl reportedly possessed by demons.

In Massachusetts, United States of America, the face of a little girl aged five, has been severely burnt following a dangerous ritual cleansing aimed at casting out demons from her body.

Two black sisters, Peggy LaBossiere, 51, and Rachel Hilaire, 40, from East Bridgewater, have been arrested in connection to the incident.

The police who found the victim at her home alleged that the pair also threatened to cut off the head of her 8-year-old brother.

According to many reports, the procedure was initiated on the request of the girl's mother who makes hair for the suspects. The Haitian voodoo was performed in order to rid the children of evil spirits report says.

"[The mum] stated that her children have been behaving badly due to evil spirits and that they perform prayers and use certain water and oils to make the demon leave.

"The victim stated that Peggy [LaBossiere] would lean over her and kiss all around her face like a snake and used a pointy object like a needle to cut her on her arm and collar area. [LaBossiere] cut her enough so that she bled," says police detective John Grillo.

The sisters have been slammed with charges bordering on mayhem, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, threats to commit murder and battery with a dangerous weapon but have pleaded not guilty.

Nigerian Parties: This Yoruba socialite has unlocked a new way of spraying money

How will you know it's a Nigerian party if nobody sprays money?

Why stress yourself when you can just hold the money, dance and let the musician pick as he wishes?

If you thought you’d seen all the ways money could be sprayed, Nigerians have gone one step further; don’t spray, just put the money in your hands and let the musician pick it one at a time.

Nigerians love their parties. We are known for lavish experiences where the alcohol flows freely and men trip over their own agbada. And what is a good Nigerian party if nobody is spraying money?

Nigeria’s rich and wealthy (and sometimes, the ill-advised too) make it a note to spray money at parties, either on the musician or the hosts.

It could be inspired by some praise-singing from a musician or some good dancing from the hosts but at some point, money begins to fly in the air.

ALSO READ: 10 people you'll find at a Nigerian party this weekend

Recently, the system of ‘spraying money’ has seen new styles and developments because we cannot come and kill ourselves.

Spraying guns and wads of cash

Last year, popular socialite E-Money introduced us to a spraying gun that feeds money in fast bursts at whoever is lucky enough to be in sight.

Not long after, a popular Igbo enterpreneur threw entire bundles of dollars at a bride during her wedding, showing that a rubber band can be more powerful than a gun.

Well, a Yoruba man has upped the spraying game once again.

In a video that has made the rounds on social media, a wealthy socialite who is yet to be identified is seen holding a large wad of money in his hands in front of a musician singing his praise.

Do it like a boss

The musician picks the money out of his hands, one at a time as the man dances, softly in that manner that only rich men do.

ALSO READ: It rained money at a wedding in Imo State

If that’s not bossing, I don’t know what is.

Pulling this off takes a lot of restraint. In the video, you can see the man and the musician fighting to maintain their home training.

Our culture of spraying money at parties has been called into question.

Most people see it as an ostentatious show of wealth, which would bother many because, in a country where corruption is a keyword, you can hardly tell who makes honest money apart from those who live on taxpayers’ funds.

Still, things like these are part of the basic elements of our way of life.

And if nothing else, we're glad that rich people have found another way to avoid stressing themselves.

Valentine Series: "Love is…… a trap.”

I offer a contrasting but complementary view.

As we enter silly season where everyone proclaims undying love for their partners

When it appears, we see only its light, not its shadows."

Do I alarm you by the cynical opening line, borrowed from Paulo Coelho? Cake makers, do not be afraid; my words are not meant to affect your bottom line during one of the most profitable periods for those in your trade. Ann Summers shares will still spike in February. I am a mere observer. I offer a contrasting but complementary view. If you’re still reading, then we have something in common.

Silly season.

As we enter silly season where everyone proclaims undying love for their partners, my bae this (was there ever a more meaningless word?), you complete me that (after they have left home in separate cars because they aren’t talking) and said partners are surreptitiously sending love hearts to their other bae by WhatsApp, permit me to burst your bubble with a healthy dose of pragmatism.

After the red satin underwear, heart cakes, cupid arrow diamond necklaces, what next? Reader, I am not telling you to forgo love, feel free to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Love is everywhere, always has been and always will be, provided The Donald and Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un restrict their disagreements to social media and Planet Earth is allowed to remain undestroyed.

The Bible talks extensively about love in the first letter to the Corinthians. Singers continually include love in the lyrics of their bestselling songs, love quotes are everywhere. Bear with me and you’ll see where I’m going with this:

Challenges of loving.

After the romantic dinner, you’re both driving home, and the waves of calamari breath battle the air-conditioning for atmospheric space. That you reach your destination without splitting up for good, that is love. By morning when the onions in the appetizer are working their way through the digestive process, and you both stay under the duvet together despite the gaseous releases, that is love. Love is not always neat and tidy.

I’m a huge Pink fan because she doesn’t do mushy love songs. Titles like Beautiful Trauma and Just Give Me a Reason resonate because they accept that love isn’t perfect. Emeli Sandé tells us love hurts. Marilyn Monroe said “I’m selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can’t handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don’t deserve me at my best.” I could go on and on because love means so many different things. Permit me one more – “Marriage is three parts love, and seven parts forgiveness of sins” Do I hear the sound of couples cheering Lao-Tzu?

Loving is a conscious effort.

These are a few things to consider as we countdown to the annual frenzy that is Valentine’s Day. I started with Senhor Coelho, and will round up with his wise words, “Love is an unconditional commitment to an imperfect person.

To love somebody isn`t just a strong feeling. It is a decision, a judgment, and a promise.

He knows what he’s taking about; he has been married for thirty-eight years.

NYSC to blacklist employers who encourage truancy

NYSC National Youth Service Corps logoTHE National Youth Service Corps in Lagos says the corps would blacklist any employer of labour that connives with members to engage in truancy during the service year.

Mr Mohammed Momoh, the Lagos  State Coordinator of the corps,   stated this at the closing ceremony of the Batch ‘B’ Stream II Orientation Course at Iyana-Ipaja, Lagos.

Momoh urged corps members to obey the rules and regulations of the scheme as erring members would be sanctioned in line with NYSC bye-laws.

He said some employers,  who think they were being compassionate,  sometimes connive with corps members to breach the rules and regulations of the scheme.

“I know that we have informally engaged them to tell them that what they are doing is not right.

“These are young men and women put under their supervision for them to mentor positively.

“A situation where you are compassionate and you allow corps members to be absent without valid reason and without approval is not in the best interest of national service or the best of productivity of that young Nigerian.

“We know that we have informally engaged some of them and we hope the situation will not repeat itself because if it does, such persons will be blacklisted,” he said.

Momoh said the corps members had undergone training in military drills, leadership skills, martial arts, skills acquisition and entrepreneurship development, managerial and career building skills.

“Dear compatriots in national service, I want to assure you that the scheme and the nation is proud of you.

“You have been exposed to skills that are geared toward nation building as you are expected to positively impact on your host communities in various ways.

“You are to also bring out your ingenuity, creativity and innovativeness to help overcome the challenges of our dear nation,’’ he said.

The state coordinator urged the corps members to lead by example as individuals exuding integrity, patriotism, honesty and humility.

“I want to encourage you to be a reflection of all that is patriotic and virtuous.

“Let service and humility be your watchword,” he said.

Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State  urged the corps members to imbibe the spirit of hard work and commitment as they report to their places  of primary assignments and host communities.

Ambode was represented by the Lagos State Commissioner for Special Duties and Inter -Governmental Relations, Mr Oluseye Oladejo.

“The secret of hard work is to love what you do and do it the way you would, even if you were not going to be paid.

“It is this secret that guarantees the enthusiasm that translates into competence, efficiency and effectiveness, ” he said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that six people were presented award for their outstanding services during the three-week orientation course.

A corps member, Miss Mmonu Cynthia Obiaju, with registration number LA/1713/4806, was awarded N50, 000 as the best overall parade commander.

Firstbank ATMs dispense N2.8 trillion

First Bank of Nig. Ltd. says its Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) dispensed over N2.8 trillion from January 2017 to December 2017.

The bank’s Group Head of E-Business, Mr Chuma Ezirim, said in a statement in Lagos on Monday that the bank also accounted for 37 percent bill payment services on ATMs in the nation’s banking industry.

In the statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ezirim said that about 402,102 bill payments were made through Firstbank’s ATMs in 2017, while airtime worth about N1.7 billion was purchased through the machines.

The official said that the bank had the highest number of ATMs, having deployed 2,897 of the machines across the country.

He said that the bank would continue to cater for the financial service needs of its customers in line with its strategy to drive convenience and ease in banking.

“The bank’s ATMs have unique functional features which include bills payment, cash transfer, airtime top-up, cash deposit, among others,’’ he said.

According to him, the bill payment option is the non-cash transaction feature on the ATM that makes it easier for customers to pay for cable TV subscriptions, post-paid phone bills, and pre-booked airline tickets, among others.

He noted that the transactions could be executed through the quick teller option on any of the bank’s ATMs.

“FirstBank is currently responsible for over 15 percent of inter-bank transactions and 21 percent of airtime vending.

“As active mobile network users in Nigeria are over 142 million, and the need to recharge is on the increase, the bank’s ATMs also provide the platform for an easy top-up.

“To further enhance convenience, Firstbank’s ATMs operate the cash deposit function which allows customers to deposit funds without entering a banking hall.

“The bank’s ATMs are also equipped with cardless functionality that makes it easier for non-bank customers to deposit or withdraw money from the ATMs without a debit card,” he said.

He said that the developments were aimed at meeting the needs of the bank’s customers and reaching out to the under-banked and the un-banked.

Beijing holds successful missile defense test

Judgment doesn’t affect Magu

The recent judgment of the Federal High Court in Abuja by His Lordship, Justice J.T. Tsoho over confirmation of the appointment of the chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu by the Senate doesn’t affect the position of ‘acting chairman’. Unfortunately, the senate amplified the obiter dictum (statement by the way) in the judgment, ignoring the most important part which was dismissal of the suit over locus standi, thus, of no effect. In addition, there was no declaratory order by the court to remove the acting chairman from office.

Without a doubt, the Senate has unfettered powers as adumbrated by the court to confirm or reject President’s nominee from becoming a substantive chairman of the commission which gives statutory benefits. However, the senate cannot dictate to the President who to appoint in acting capacity, and clearly, the duration for acting position is not specified. By implication, the acting-chairman of the commission can remain in the position as long as the President desires.

Two persons decide the fate on mere ‘acting’ position; the President and the appointee. The business of the senate begins and ends with the confirmation or rejection of substantive position. As Magu is rejected for confirmation as substantive head, it implies President Muhammadu Buhari would come up with a new nominee ‘as soon as possible’. As long as the appointee is not bothered about the confirmation which offers statutory securities and benefits, no harm is done.

Incidentally, the senate relied on a report of the State Security Service (SSS) to refuse confirmation but forgot that pursuant to Section 36 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended, Ibrahim Magu is still presumed not guilty. Funnily enough, a good number of the senators and members of the House of Representatives have been, at one time or the other indicted through similar reports but on account of the presumption of innocence in the constitution, they contested election and were sworn in. The simple direction of the obiter dictum is that the senate confirms appointment for a substantive chairman. As for acting capacity, no confirmation is required by sole discretion of the President.

Politics: Maldives declares state of emergency, arrests 2 Supreme court judges and former president

AP_18036622058062 (1)

The state of emergency was issued on Tuesday morning and will last 15 days.

The Maldives has entered a state of emergency.

President Abdulla Yameen made that declaration in the early hours of Tuesday morning local time, and in the hours since, two Supreme Court judges — of a total of four — have been arrested along with former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

According to Reuters, the situation in the Indian Ocean nation began when the Supreme Court dismissed terrorism charges against nine opposition leaders, six of whom are being held in jail, but Yameen refused to comply.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that, despite the declaration, there will be no curfew and that services and business "will not be affected."

There are also no restrictions on traveling to or from the popular holiday destination, and all transportation remains operational.
