Alarm Don Blow! 'Chrisland School supervisor used his penis on my vagina', 2-yr-old girl naively reveals

Pupils in a Chrisland School classroom.

While giving a testimony, a social worker confirmed to a court that Chrisland School supervisor sexually abused a two-year-old girl.

The diligence of a social worker, Miss. Gloria Chinoyera, has uncovered a possible case of sexual assault involving Chrisland School supervisor, Mr. Adegboyega Adenekan who has been accused of defiling a 2-year-old girl.

Chinoyera offered a testimony at the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court, recently inaugurated. She alleged that the accused, aged 47, committed the offence in November 2016.

In conjunction with a prosecuting counsel, the social worker presented an incriminating account on how Adenekan's sordid behaviour came to be revealed.

“At 9.15 a.m. on Nov. 24, 2016, the defendant was brought to the police station, the mother of child `X’ was asked to bring her daughter to the station.

“During the interaction with child, she said that Mr Adenekan had used his wee-wee on her wee-wee and his mouth on her wee-wee, she also said that he comes to her classroom to sit and watch the television with her.

“The police made a video recording of our interaction with child `X’.

“Shortly after our interview, Mr Adenekan was brought by the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) into the room we were in, the IPO did not realise that we were still in the room.

“When she (the IPO) realised we were still in the room, she pulled Mr Adenekan back but Child `X’ had already seen him.

“She got very emotional and started crying that she wanted to see Mr Adenekan that he is her friend, we tried to calm her down but she kept insisting that she wanted to see him.

“We had to take her to the office of the Divisional Police Officer to calm her down.

“After the interview and based on what Child `X’ had said, we (myself, the Officer in Charge of Human Rights, Child X and her mother) decided to visit the school at VGC, Ajah.

"She was asked to show us her classroom which she did and the first classroom she showed us had no television in it.

“We were made to understand that that was her new classroom as the school had changed her classroom after the allegation against Mr Adenekan.

She expressed that the victim's mother who reported the incident to the school failed to take an action following the allegation made against the accused.

It was reported that Adenekan was transferred from the institution's Victoria Island, Lagos branch to the mainland annex located in Ikeja.

Following a first hearing, the court judge, Justice Sybil Nwaka adjourned the case to February 8, 2018, for further deliberation.

Entertainment: In Curling, a Sibling Rivalry Is Put on Ice

Matt and Becca Hamilton

Matt and Becca Hamilton, Olympic curlers from Wisconsin, had a bad habit of turning their matches into soap operas. They nitpicked each other. They argued. Sometimes they even yelled.

None of this would have been such a big deal — they are siblings, after all — if they had not been doing it out on the ice during competitions, in full public view. It was a recipe for disaster, and it was especially hard on their mother, Cathy, who just wanted them to get along.

“We bickered quite a bit,” said Matt Hamilton, 28. “We both hate to lose, and we were losing a lot.”

Now, they are competing as medal contenders for the United States in mixed doubles at the 2018 Winter Olympics. To get there, they had to transform their on-ice partnership, starting with a heart-to-heart conversation last March.

They agreed on a handy way to deal with disagreements on the road to the games.

“We came up with a safe word,” said Becca Hamilton, 27, “so if things were starting to go bad, we’d say that word and that meant we had to drop everything.”

The safe word is a secret.

“Oh, we don’t tell anyone,” said Becca Hamilton, who teamed with her brother Thursday for a 9-3 victory against Anastasia Bryzgalova and Alexander Krushelnitckii, who are from Russia.

Not long after the International Olympic Committee announced in June 2015 that it was adding mixed doubles to the slate of events for Pyeongchang, officials from USA Curling approached the Hamiltons to ask if they wanted to form a team. It was framed as a suggestion, but they also recognized that they did not have much choice in the matter.

“We’d tried it in the past, just in leagues at our club,” Becca Hamilton said, “but we weren’t very good because we’d argue and not get along the greatest.”

It is worth pausing here to emphasize that the Hamiltons do say they love each other. But they describe themselves as ultracompetitive, and as they attempted another foray into mixed doubles, they found their matches together were little more than glorified grease fires — just like when they were growing up.

There is no room for error in mixed doubles, which is a more compact version of curling, the sport that involves using brooms to direct a heavy granite rock down a sheet of ice toward a target.

Compared with the team events, athletes in mixed doubles put fewer rocks in play over the course of fewer ends, which are like innings in baseball. So mistakes are magnified, and the Hamiltons were making their share by constantly questioning each other over strategy.

John Landsteiner, who plays alongside Matt Hamilton on the U.S. men’s team, said he had largely limited his exposure to mixed doubles to a recreational league with his wife. But he has seen enough to know there could be land mines.

“It’s just you and your partner out there, so communication is extremely important,” Landsteiner said. “And that’s hard to do with just two people. This is just my experience, but you might argue a little more. If you’re playing with four people, you might just get outnumbered and the conversation ends in a hurry.”

The Hamiltons appeared in danger of bottoming out in March 2017 at the Mixed Doubles National Championships. After another slow start, they addressed their mutual concerns during a 20-minute car ride: How do we fix this? They agreed that if one person wanted to take a particular type of shot, let it rip. They were wasting too much time quarreling over every little decision.

“We knew we had to trust each other more,” Matt Hamilton said. “Becca’s a heck of a shooter.”

The Hamiltons wound up winning that tournament and carried that momentum forward through the trials in December.

In addition to competing in mixed doubles, they will represent the United States on their respective four-person men’s and women’s teams. The only other curler who could pull double duty here is Jenny Perret of Switzerland, who will compete in mixed doubles and is an alternate in the women’s team event.

If they are able to advance to all their various medal rounds, the Hamiltons are looking at nearly three straight weeks of sweeping, without much opportunity to rest their soon-to-be-weary backs.

“We’ve got the hardest workload, I think,” Becca Hamilton said.

John Shuster, who will be making his fourth Olympic appearance for the U.S. men, noted that he had the same goal of competing in two events, until he and his mixed doubles partner, Cory Christensen, lost to the Hamiltons in the finals at the Olympic trials.

“I’m not concerned,” Shuster said of the Hamiltons’ potential fatigue. “Matt’s one of those guys who just has a lot in the tank.”

But just to be safe, Brian McWilliams, the head trainer for USA Curling, added extra cardiovascular training to the Hamiltons’ workouts in the runup to the games. McWilliams said he also planned to monitor their energy levels. He brought a couple of compression sleeves to boost circulation in their legs between matches.

“I’m not worried about the mixed doubles,” McWilliams said. “I’m more worried about how they’re going to feel toward the end of their team events.”

But the Hamiltons are certain they are ready for the physical and familial challenges.

“We’ve come a long way,” Matt Hamilton said.

Still, old habits can be hard to break. When a photographer posted a picture of Matt barking at Becca during a recent competition in Ontario, their mother weighed in on Twitter.

“Love you two … be friends,” Cathy Hamilton wrote, adding a face-palm emoji for good measure.

Finance: A Tesla exec is leaving to be COO of Lyft (TSLA)

Elon Musk said he would be effectively taking over Jon McNeill's job as head of sales and service.

  • John McNeill is leaving Tesla to join Lyft as COO, Bloomberg reported.
  • He was head of sales and service at Tesla.
  • The news broke as Tesla was conducting a Q4 earnings call.

Executive leadership changes are usually announced at the top of an earnings conference call, not in the middle of them.

But after Tesla reported lower-than-expected fourth-quarter losses and while CEO Elon Musk was on a call with analysts, Musk announced thatJohn McNeill was leaving the company.

"McNeill was president of global sales and service at Tesla and an influential figure at the automaker," Bloomberg reported.

Musk said that he would be effectively taking over the position and that “there are no plans to search for a replacement.”

McNeill gained some serious attention in the industry when it was reported in 2017 that he would receive a $700,000 bonus if Tesla achieved its goal of producing 5,000 Model 3s per week, The Drive reported.

Tesla fell far short of that goal, so McNeill didn't have the cars he needed to sell.

Arrest of Innoson Motors Boss: Be more cautious in your operations on Civil Matters, Senate to EFCC

Insecurity: Replace IGP now, Reps tell Buhari as Army deploys troops to Benue, other

By Kingsley Omonobi, Henry Umoru, Joseph Erunke & Emman Ovuakporie
ABUJA—The Federal Government, yesterday, ordered immediate deployment of troops to Benue, Taraba, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger and Kaduna states to contain insecurity in the six states.

The deployment came following ceaseless clashes between farmers and herdsmen which have resulted in several deaths and destruction of property worth several billions of Naira.

Meanwhile, peeved by the state of insecurity in the country, the House of Representatives, yesterday, asked President Muhmmadu Buhari to sack the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and replace him with ‘a more professional officer’.

This came on a day the Senate threw out the report of the Committee on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence over recent killings in Benue State, and scolded the committee for writing and presenting what it described as unbalanced and incomplete report.

Deployment of troops

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai, who announced the development at a press conference, yesterday in Abuja, said the troops will carry out special operations in the affected states in conjunction with other sister security agencies, including the Nigerian Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps among others.

Army Chief of Training and Operations, Major General David Ahmadu, who briefed the media on behalf of Buratai on the planned conduct of the special Army operations, tagged: ”Exercise Ayem Akpatuma”, said the exercise had become more “expedient due to upsurge in cases of armed banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling in Kaduna and Niger states as well as other sundry crimes in Kogi State and herdsmen/farmers clashes and attacks on innocent members of our communities, particularly in Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa states by armed militias.”

According to him, the special operations will be conducted in 1 and 3 Divisions, including Headquarters, Guards Brigade, and 707 Brigade; Areas of Responsibility, covering Benue, Taraba, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger states from Thursday, February 15 to Saturday, March 31, 2018.

He said: “You may recall that last year, the Nigerian Army conducted several training activities for its personnel in different geopolitical zones of the country, in line with its constitutional role in aid of civil authority.

“More so, Exercise Ayem Akpatuma has become more expedient due to upsurge in cases of armed banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling in Kaduna and Niger states as well as other sundry crimes in Kogi State and herdsmen/farmers clashes and attacks on innocent members of our communities particularly in Benue, Taraba and Nasarawa States by armed militias.

“These security challenges have continued unabated in these states, despite the efforts by sister security agencies to curb them.

Exercise Ayem Akpatuma

“This exercise will be conducted in conjunction with other security agencies such as Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.

“It will also afford the troops an opportunity to effectively checkmate the dreadful activities of the marauding criminal militias perpetrating criminal acts in these states and environs.“

Major-General Ahmadu also said  Exercise Ayem Akpatuma was conceptualized to dovetail into real-time operations, thereby fulfilling both training and operations objectives of sharpening operational skills of personnel as well as providing an avenue to conduct operations against violent criminals when called upon.

“Exercise Ayem Akpatuma will also be unique as the ones before it, with the establishment of Step-Up Brigade Headquarters in Benue, Taraba, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger states. Emphasis will be placed on raids, cordon-and-search operations, anti-kidnapping drills, road blocks, check-points and show of force, as well as humanitarian activities such as medical outreach.

“It is pertinent to note that Exercise Ayem Akpatuma is set to be another remarkable exercise that would make the nation proud of the Nigerian Army’s determination to sustain its constitutional role of defending the territorial integrity of the nation as well as its commitment to aid the civil authority to bring about peace and security in troubled areas.

“In this regard, members of the public, especially residents of Benue, Taraba, Kogi, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Niger states are enjoined not to panic as the security, safety and well-being of innocent and law abiding citizens have been deliberately factored in the planning of this exercise.

“In order to ensure cordial civil-military relations, we shall make contact phone numbers of all Brigade Commanders public in addition to the Nigerian Army short code Information and Call Centre 193.”

Sack IGP — Reps

Lawmakers in the House of Representatives, after listening to two separate motions by Mark Gbillah and Nuhu Damburam from Benue and Kano on the state of insecurity in their respective states and the alleged lackadaisical attitude of the IGP, did not hesitate to pass a vote of no confidence on the Police boss.

This development was sequel to an amendment to a prayer in Nuhu Damburam of Kano’s motion under matters of public importance on the need to stop thuggery in Kano State.

John Dyegh (APC, Benue), had moved that his prayer be amended to reflect that the IGP should be replaced by a more professional police officer.

The Speaker at this point, said “if we amend, it all means we have passed a vote of no confidence” and the response was a thunderous yes!

Before the amendment move by John Dyegh, most of the lawmakers, who spoke on the state of thuggery in Kano, had appealed for peace to reign in Kano.

Damburam, leading the debate, had argued that “thuggery in recent times in Kano has really impeded law and order in the state as Police and other security operatives turn blind eyes to what is happening around them.

“This development is dangerous to democracy and it’s worrisome that a ranking lawmaker is at the top of such a situation.”

In his contribution, Kolawole Gabriel (PDP, Ondo), said “thuggery can only be curtailed if the youths are gainfully employed and unfortunately if you are not in the ruling party, you are prone to attack.”

The ayes have it

Ali Madaki (APC, Kano), in his view, pointed accusing fingers at the IGP, saying ”he is the cause of lawlessness across the state as he seems to be aiding them.”

House Whip, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, however, spoke against the position of his colleagues, claiming that ”without any fear of contradiction, your position on this matter was mischievous, misleading and misinforming the House.’’

He was greeted by a thunderous No! No! by his colleagues, who equally warned that his choice of words were not honourable.

Kingsley Chinda (PDP, Rivers), citing Order 9, Rule 7 of the House, demanded that the Whip should withdraw such words “as they were unparliamentary.

But Doguwa continued, insisting that he would not change his choice of words.

The presiding officer, Yakubu Dogara, after listening to all the submissions, put it to a voice vote and the ayes carried the day.

Earlier, Mark Gbillah under matter of National Importance, entitled: “Motion on The Derogatory Statement By the Police PRO Against An Executive Governor of a state and the seeming unwillingness of the IGP to recognize and enforce a constitutionally enacted law by the legislative arm of Government”, had an overwhelming support.

After close to an hour debate on the issue, the House resolved that the constituted House committee on the recent killings and insecurity should further investigate the IGP’s utterances, outside apologising to Governor Ortom.

The lawmakers also asked for the immediate removal of the Force PRO.

Pally Iriase (APC, Edo); Hassan Saleh (APC, Benue); Kingsley Chinda and others contributed meaningfully to the debate.

Benue Reps on Police PRO

In a related development, the Benue State caucus in the House of Representatives, yesterday, warned the IGP to steer clear of politics and restrict himself to the role of maintaining law and order.

Spokesman of the Caucus, John Dyegh said:  “Jimoh Moshood’s tirade against the governor is hate speech and, therefore, a criminal act.

“We condemn and reject the calls for the resignation of Governor Samuel Ortom by the Nigeria Police, as openly canvassed by Jimoh on a national television.

“Governor Ortom has done excellently well to protect the lives and property of all residents of Benue State within the limits of his powers and the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“We therefore, stand with Ortom and support the full implementation of the anti-grazing law as the only panacea to resolving the perennial herdsmen attacks on our farmers and communities and a peaceful co-existence of all residents/inhabitants of Benue State.

Senate throws out  committee report

Meanwhile, the Senate, yesterday threw out the report of its Committee on Police Affairs and National Security and Intelligence over recent killings in Benue State, saying it was unbalanced and incomplete.

According to the Senate, the report failed to unfold the failings of the Nigeria Police in curbing the killings in Benue and many other states.

Consequently, the Upper Chamber asked  the committee to do a more balanced and objective report for Senate’s consideration.

It asked the committee, headed by Senator Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina South), to take testimonies from the governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, who was massively indicted by the report and report back in one week.

It was particularly not happy that the committee members failed to reach out to the governor to get his own views, even after the panel had met with the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, who spoke against Ortom.

Soon after Senator Ibrahim presented the six-page report where he highlighted the ‘achievements’ so far recorded by the Police IGP, than other senators took him up, describing the report as biased, unbalanced and incomplete.

His colleagues came down hard on him when Senator Ibrahim asked the senators to commend the IGP for his efforts after the Benue crisis.

What was submitted to the Senate was based mainly on the testimony of Ibrahim Idris, just as the report blamed the recent disturbance in Benue on the Anti-Open Grazing Bill passed by the state.

Tech: Google’s move to bring Nest back into the fold is a sign that it’s taking the huge threat from Amazon seriously (GOOG, GOOGL, AMZN)

Yoky Matsuoka, Nest's chief technology officer, shows off the company's updated product lineup at a press event in September.

Alexa, Amazon's voice assistant, poses a unique threat to Google —one the search giant is fiercely trying to stave off.

  • Google is folding Nest into its hardware division; the move comes two years after Google set up the smart-home product maker as an independent subsidiary of parent company Alphabet.
  • The move comes as Google is facing an existential threat from Amazon, whose Alexa voice agent could undermine Google's search advertising business.
  • The search giant is trying to shore up Google Assistant, its rival to Alexa, to help thwart the danger from Amazon.

Google is clearly worried about Amazon.

If that wasn't obvious before, it should be now, after the search giant announced it was going to bring Nest, the smart-home product company it spun out as one of parent company Alphabet's other bets two years ago, back in house.

Google spun the decision as a way to boost both Nest and Google's own hardware business. That may be true, but it's just as much about responding to the unique — even existential — threat Amazon presents.

Purchased by Google more than three years ago for $3.2 billion, Nest makes a line of smart-home devices, including its famous connected thermostat. After setting up Nest as one of its sister companies under the auspices of Alphabet, Google is now folding the smart home company into its hardware division, which oversees it Pixel phones, Home smart speakers, and other devices.

The move comes as Amazon has taken an early lead in voice-based computing with its Echo smart speakers and its Alexa assistant. Amazon's Echo line dominates the market, and Amazon has been aggressive about getting Alexa everywhere, from refrigerators to connected cars.

Alexa poses a big threat to Google's search-advertising business

Alexa's rise poses a big challenge to Google, because it doesn't rely on the search giant's stockpiles of data. Instead, to answer users' questions about traffic, restaurant hours, or trivia, it taps into a mix of other sources, including Yahoo and Microsoft's Bing search engine. The danger for Google is that as people use Alexa more, they'll potentially use Google's search engine less.

But Alexa's threat to Google goes beyond search to advertising, its core business. Amazon has been quietly building its own advertising business. This year, it will reportedly start selling product placement and other ads that will be spoken by Alexa. Should Alexa's user base continue to grow as Amazon thinks it will, Alexa could start to steal advertising dollars and market share from Google.

Amazon's challenge has forced the search giant to push forward with Google Assistant, its Alexa competitor. If it doesn't stem Amazon's growth now, Google could stand to lose major ground in the near future.

All of Google's current crop of hardware is powered by Assistant or has the technology built-in. Assitant is the default voice agent on the Pixel phones. It's at the core of the Home smart speakers, the company's competitors to Amazon's Echo devices.

Bringing Nest back could boost Google Assistant, the search giant's Alexa rival

Folding Nest into its hardware division offers Google the opportunity to more easily incorporate Assistant into additional devices and give the smart agent new capabilities. Assistant could already be used to control most Nest devices, and Nest had already announced plans to build Assistant into its IQ cameras. But you can expect more such developments going forward.

That could make all the difference as Amazon continues to build out its lineup of Alexa-powered devices. In addition to its smart speakers, its Fire tablets and some of its Fire TV devices have the voice assistant built-in. And Amazon recently introduced the Cloud Cam, a competitor to Nest's camera lineup.

Even with the move to bring Nest in house, there's still plenty of uncertainty and potential danger ahead for Google. It hasn't yet demonstrated a clear strategy for linking Google Assistant to its core search-advertising business, though it's made some moves with sponsored content and games from the likes of Disney. Just as importantly, Amazon's Echo line is still vastly outselling the Google Home lineup.

But Google isn't out of the race. Even though the search giant is lagging behind in smart speaker sales, Google Assistant is on 200 million devices, when you factor in the Pixel devices and all the other Android phones that have the agent built-in. That's an install base Alexa has yet to match.

With their respective hardware efforts, Google and Amazon are betting on a future of the technology industry in which the center of computing moves away from the PC and the smartphone to other devices. For its part, Google is trying to build that future before anybody else does — particularly Amazon.

Finance: Tesla says Model 3 production is on track, but it's still a complete mess (TSLA)

A Tesla Model 3 at the company's retail store at Westfield Century City.

Tesla plans to build 2,500 Model 3s a week by the end of Q1 in 2018. It managed to only deliver roughly 1,500 during the final three months of 2017.

  • Tesla delivered just 1,542 Model 3 vehicles during the final quarter of 2017.
  • The company admits to a slower than expected production ramp up for the Model 3.
  • But it still expects to produce 2,500 Model 3 vehicles per week by the first quarter of 2018.

Tesla is still having trouble filling its more than 400,000 pre-orders for the Model 3 electric sedan.

On Wednesday, Tesla announced that it delivered a grand total 1,542 Model 3s to customers during the final three months of 2017. As the Silicon Valley EV maker ramps up production of its first mass-market offering, it's abundantly aware of the production difficulties awaiting the company.

According to Tesla, it's aiming for an ambitious goal of producing 2,500 Model 3s per week by the end of Q1 2018. That's down from the goal of 5,000 cars per week for same period it announced last November.

And even then Tesla is trying to temper expectations with the following sentences in its latest letter to investors:

"It is important to note that while these are the levels we are focused on hitting and we have plans in place to achieve them, our prior experience on the Model 3 ramp has demonstrated the difficulty of accurately forecasting specific production rates at specific points in time. What we can say with confidence is that we are taking many actions to systematically address bottlenecks and add capacity in places like the battery module line where we have experienced constraints, and these actions should result in our production rate significantly increasing during the rest of Q1 and through Q2."

This is nothing new for Tesla. The production and delivery of cars have always been the weakest link in Elon Musk's automotive empire. Missing delivery and production goals were also commonplace during the early days of the Model S and the Model X.

But over a period of several years, Tesla has gotten a grip on the difficulties of producing the pricer S and X. In 2017, Tesla delivered 101,417 of its two flagship models, beating company projections by more than 1,000 cars.

So there's hope that Tesla will be able to one day hit its lofty Model 3 production goals. But don't hold your breath, it could take a while.

Politics: Nancy Pelosi gives marathon House floor speech demanding Paul Ryan hold DACA vote

nancy pelosi

Nancy Pelosi took advantage of a special privilege afforded to party leaders in the House of Representatives known as the "magic minute."

  • House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told the stories of "Dreamers" on the House floor for hours on Wednesday.
  • She was making use of a special House privilege afforded to party leaders sometimes known as the "magic minute" or "leadership minute."
  • Pelosi said earlier she wouldn't back a bipartisan Senate budget deal unless House Speaker Paul Ryan committed to hold a vote on immigration.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi spoke on the House floor for a record seven hours and counting on Wednesday, telling the stories of young unauthorized immigrants known as "Dreamers" and demanding that House Speaker Paul Ryan commit to holding a vote on a legislative fix for them.

Pelosi's marathon speech broke a national record, according to the Office of the Historian for the House of Representatives. The next-longest continuous House floor speech occurred more than a century ago, when Champ Clark of Missouri spoke against the 1909 tariff overhaul for five hours and 15 minutes.

Yet even Clark didn't match Pelosi in endurance — Pelosi spoke continuously, pausing only occasionally to sip water, and she stood the entire time in four-inch stilettos, according to her office.

"It's important to note that although Clark held the floor for the duration, he was repeatedly interrupted during his remarks," the Office of the Historian told Business Insider in a statement. "We're not certain that Clark held the record for the longest speech at the time, but it is the longest example we’ve been able to find on short notice."

Pelosi's lengthy speech wasn't a filibuster, but a privilege granted to House party leaders known sometimes as a "magic minute." One aide told USA Today that they couldn't recall Pelosi using the privilege in the last dozen years.

"I don't know when we would have another opportunity that matches today" to lock Ryan into a commitment, Pelosi said. "Let Congress work its will."

Meanwhile in the Senate, leaders announced a major bipartisan budget deal that would add more than $300 billion in federal spending over the next two years, but notably excluded any of the immigration-related issues that have roiled Congress for months.

Lawmakers have been working to enact legislation that would codify the temporary protections offered by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA), which President Donald Trump is terminating. The issue has gained increasing complexity as Trump has added demands such as border security, an end to the diversity visa lottery, and the elimination of certain family-sponsored immigration visas.

Pelosi said she will not support the Senate's budget deal unless Ryan commits to holding a vote on immigration in the same way that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did.

"This morning, we took a measure of our Caucus because the package does nothing to advance bipartisan legislation to protect Dreamers in the House," Pelosi said in a statement earlier on Wednesday. "Without a commitment from Speaker Ryan comparable to the commitment from Leader McConnell, this package does not have my support."

Bob Bryan contributed reporting.

Access to Justice wants CCT boss suspended

By Abdulwahab Abdulah

Access to Justice,  A2J, has called for the immediate suspension of the Chairman of the Code of Conduct Tribunal, CCT, Mr Danladi Umar  pending the trial of the criminal charges brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

In a statement, Mr Joseph Otteh, the Executive Director of A2J, said Umar supposed to go on an indefinite leave pending a formal suspension, notwithstanding the trial.

According to the body, it was no longer tenable for Umar to continue in office as the Chairman of the Tribunal, saying he “has brought the CCT nothing but public ridicule and embarrassment which has done incalculable harm to the image of the Tribunal and the Judiciary in Nigeria.”

The group argued that the CCT needed a new leadership that would restore public trust in the Tribunal, “provide purposeful leadership for the staff of the Tribunal and put the tribunal’s powers to effective use.”

Beside, it called on the government to appoint a third member to make the CCT, meet its responsibility, arguing that “the failure of the Federal Government to appoint a 3rd member of the CCT to fill a position that has been vacant for many years now greatly undermines the work of the CCT and the fight against corruption.”

UK-based Nigerian group makes case for Diaspora voting

Lagos – The Diaspora Voting Right Movement, a Nigerian Group based in the United Kingdom, on Wednesday called on the Federal Government to legalise Diaspora voting.

Dr Philip Idaewor, the Convener of the group, said on the telephone from London that the clamour for Diaspora voting had been on for more than a decade.

“ As women celebrate 100 years of voting rights in the United Kingdom, Nigerians in the Diaspora renew call for the right to vote in elections in Nigeria,” he said.

He described the situation as “ grave injustice and denial of basic fundamental right” of such Nigerians not to elect their political leaders.

“ We are renewing the call for all relevant agencies and authorities of the Nigerian government to have a rethink and expeditiously activate this citizens’ right to all Nigerians regardless of their abode, especially as the world remembers and celebrates the courage shown by the suffragettes who, against all prejudices and antagonism, stood up and fought for the right of women to vote in elections in the United Kingdom some 100 years ago,” he said.

Idaewor said that Nigerians living abroad felt the same prejudice with unhelpful, unjust and discriminatory laws on political participation.

He said that those opposed to Diaspora voting should have a rethink because it would be in everybody`s interest that equal opportunities are extended to all Nigerians regardless of their residence, age or sex.

“ As the 2019 elections approach, we hope that this call will be urgently attended, and every needed institutional consideration put in place to accommodate our rights to participate in electing our political leaders.

“To even contemplate denying us this basic fundamental rights amount to grave injustice,” Idaewor said.

The convener commended Nigerians who had given support to Diaspora voting, especially Mrs Dabiri-Erewa and her committee for sponsoring a bill to that effect in the National Assembly.

“ We also commend our Diaspora Compatriots who have championed this campaign in the past and still continue to give voice to this issue,” he said. (NAN)

Tech: Smart home company Nest is being folded back into Google

null

Nest is no longer a separate company under Alphabet

Alphabet's smart appliance company Nest is being spun back into Google, the companies announced Wednesday.

The move puts Nest under the purview of Rick Osterloh, the head of Google's hardware division that makes devices like the Pixel smartphones and Google Home speakers. Nest makes devices like smart thermostats, smoke detectors, and security cameras.

Here's the announcement published by Osterloh, the head of Google's hardware division:

Smart homes are no longer just a thing of the future. They make families feel safer with connected security systems. They help you save energy and money with intelligent thermostats. And they offer hands-free help and answers to a universe of questions with voice-activated smart assistants.

Since Nest joined Google four years ago, the team has experienced incredible momentum. The company doubled its hardware portfolio last year—selling more devices in 2017 than the previous two years combined. Meanwhile, Google has sold tens of millions of products for the home in just the last year, as more people use the Google Assistant to listen to their favorite music, control their connected devices, and get useful information about their day.

To build on this momentum, we're excited to bring the Nest and Google Hardware teams together. The goal is to supercharge Nest’s mission: to create a more thoughtful home, one that takes care of the people inside it and the world around it. By working together, we’ll continue to combine hardware, software and services to create a home that’s safer, friendlier to the environment, smarter and even helps you save money—built with Google’s artificial intelligence and the Assistant at the core.

We’ve had a head start on collaborating since our teams already work closely together, and today we’re excited to make Nest an integral part of Google’s big bet on hardware.

This story is developing…

Politics: Trump's 'absurd efforts to conceal his hair loss' were revealed for a brief moment — and it helps solve the mystery of his hair

null

A gust of wind blew apart Trump's elaborate hairdo — here's how it happens.

  • A new video features a gust of wind ruffled President Trump's carefully placed hair.
  • The video seems to displace a flap of hair that covers a bald spot in the back of his head.
  • This seems to confirm the theory Trump had an early hair transplant.

Many have wondered, but nobody knows what exactly is going on with Trump's hair.

We're now closer to the truth than ever, thanks to a new video.

The video captures the president going up the steps to Air Force One on February 2, about to head to his Mar a Lago resort for the weekend. It's a windy day, and Trump was positively buffeted by a cross wind that dislodged a flap of hair covering the rear of his head. The flap is pushed forward, revealing a curiously bare section of Trump's head.

Jonathan Chait of New York Magazine said it reveals the "absurd efforts" Trump has taken to conceal his hair loss.

The video — which some assumed was fake or doctored due to the severity of its contents — seems to have been taken by Reuters TV, and was reposted online on YouTube in part by the Stranger, a Seattle alternative weekly newspaper. Pictures taken that same day seem to corroborate what happens in the video. A tweet by journalist Ashley Feinberg first called attention to the video.

See the video for yourself:

The bare back of Trump's head could confirm a long-rumored theory. Many have speculated, included a hair transplant surgeon that spoke with Business Insider in 2015, that Trump has probably received a hair transplant at some point in his life — likely in the 80s or 90s.

When transplantation is done, hair is taken from the sides and back of the head, and transplanted to the top. These hairs, for whatever reason, are more resilient to the hormone that kills hair follicles and causes hair loss.

Now, surgeons typically use something called FUE — follicle unit extraction — to take individual hair follicles from and transplant them. Then, it's not clear what technology was available. It's possible that Trump, if he had hair transplantation done, had entire strips of hair taken from the rear of his head and put on top. That would explain the bare rear, and why he seems to grow it long in his elaborate hair style.

Trump also takes Finasteride, a drug that has been proven to stop hair loss and is often prescribed to patients after hair transplant surgery to prevent additional hair loss.

So there you have it. The best explanation yet for what exactly is happening in Trump's hair. At least, until the next gust of wind reveals more

Sports: 2032 Olympics may be zoned to Africa – IOC president

2032 Olympics may be zoned permanently to Africa - IOC president

The committee is currently meeting many African countries to consider the feasibility of such a proposition.

The President of International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach, revealed the body is currently considering zoning the 2032 Olympics hosting right to Africa.

And the decision on this will be made at the next IOC session in October 2018.

This information was disclosed by Bach in Pyeongchang on Wednesday, February 7, 2018. This is just two days before the commencement of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Bach hinted that this plan is triggered by IOC’s approved plans to host the Summer Youth Olympic Games (YOG) 2022 in Africa.

“Africa is the home of so many very successful Olympic athletes. Africa is a continent of youth.  That is why we want to take the Youth Olympic Games 2022 to Africa. The IOC will proactively approach a number of African NOCs to evaluate the feasibility of such a project,” said Bach.

"This Youth Olympic Games we hope can inspire one of the African countries to come up with a feasible candidature for 2032 or 2036."

"But we have enough confidence in Africa that we said we do not want to wait so long, let's go in 2022 with the Youth Olympic Games (YOG)."

Bach didn’t mention any African country but stated that the IOC hopes to elect a host city at the next IOC session in October 2018 in Buenos Aires.

If this proposal is agreed to by the IOC, Africa will also witness the first Olympic Games in the continent.

Politics: Senate urges government to ban tobacco adverts

Senate urges government to ban tobacco adverts.

The Senate is urging the government to protect the youth from being attracted to tobacco given its negative addiction and effects.

On Tuesday, February 6, 2018, the Senate urged the Federal Government to ban tobacco companies from using adverts and signs within 100 meters of schools in order to stop attracting youth into early smoking of cigarettes.

It also urged the ministries of health both at federal and state levels to promote and advertise the 'No sale of tobacco to minors' signage. These resolutions followed an adopted motion sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu and co-sponsored by five other senators.

In her lead debate on the motion, Tinubu was worried that the outcome of research by Nigeria tobacco research group in five states showed that the tobacco companies were in the ploy to position their adverts and signage close to most schools to bait teenagers.

The lawmakers said the development was contrary to the framework convention on tobacco control and the National Tobacco Control Act 2018 aimed at the prevention and substantial reduction of accessibility of tobacco and tobacco products to young people.

Other prohibitions by the act are the sale of cigarettes from a vending machine, advertisement, sponsorship and consumption of tobacco products, smoking in schools, health facilities, playgrounds and public places.

Yet, it was observed that tobacco epidemic has been sustained by the increasing number of youths into the smoker's population.
