Tech: People are confusing a weather phenomenon known as 'light pillars' with UFOs — here are the photos

To an unsuspecting onlooker, light pillars would be pretty terrifying without an explanation.

Photographer Ray Majoran captured a rare display of "light pillars" in Canada. The photos are eerie.

Imagine stepping into the night and seeing beams of light that shoot from the earth straight into the atmosphere. You might suspect alien spaceships, but light pillars are of this world.

When a blast of cold weather comes down from the Arctic, flat ice crystals form in the air and hang there like pixie dust. Any source of light reflects off the crystals, creating a dazzling display of brightly colored rods of light known as light pillars.

The appearance of these pillars south of polar regions is so rare that people have reported them as UFO sightings in the past — as some did with SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket launch in December.

Photographer Ray Majoran captured the otherworldly display outside his home in Ontario, Canada. He shared some photos with us. Follow him on Instagram for more.

On a late night in January, Ray Majoran was sitting on his couch when he got a text from his friend with a photo of the sky. "My phone does not come close to doing it justice," he said.

Majoran didn't hesitate. He grabbed his camera and took off down the main highway in search of light pillars. He turned his eyes to the sky and at first saw darkness. "Then it happened," Majoran said.

"The sky became littered with light pillars. There were stars above me, yet there were little crystals of ice falling like manna from heaven," he said.

He turned off the highway, set up a tripod, and photographed the sky for the next two hours.

"It was like something you imagine in the movies or a science-fiction show," Majoran said.

He covered about six miles over the next two hours, pulling over wherever he found stunning views. As cars passed by, light pillars shot from the headlights to the sky.

The crystals reflect natural and artificial light, and the light pillars take on the color of whatever is being reflected. Street lamps produced rays in yellow and orange hues.

Majoran said the light pillars were bright enough to shoot with a phone. But he used a Nikon D850 on a tripod and optimized the settings for a long exposure to create sharper images.

Majoran said many people who saw his photos asked if they were Photoshopped. When they realized that's how the pillars really look, he said, "the common response was, 'You’ve got to be kidding me right now.'"

"To see something so rarely seen anywhere in the world … is unreal," Majoran said.

Majoran wrote a blog post about his experience capturing light pillars. Click here to read.

ASUU donates relief materials to victims of gunmen attacks in Taraba

THE Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), on Saturday, donated relief materials to victims of Jan. 5, suspected gunmen attacks in Katibu, Lau Local Government Area (LGA), Taraba.

Items donated to the victims, who are taking shelter in Central Primary School (CPS), Jalingo, and Government Secondary School (GSS), Negatavah, are bags of grains, seasoning, clothes, cooking oil, among others.

Presenting the items to the victims at CPS Jalingo, the Chairman, Taraba State University ASUU Chapter, Dr Ruben Jonathan, said the gesture was to cushion their hardship.

Jonathan urged them to “consider the union’s love and sympathy in this difficult time as more important than the relief materials, which might not be sufficient’’.

The chairman also advised them to play an active part in ensuring sustainable peace in the area, especially now that they have seen adverse effects of crises.

Responding, the spokesman of the victims, Malam Bakari Katibu, thanked ASSU for the assistance, saying that it was the first organisation to come to their aid.

He expressed concern that they had not received any support from the state government throughout their stay on campus.

Katibu said over 3000 Displaced Persons reported to the camp on Jan. 5, though some later moved to stay with relatives in host communities.

He identified poor sanitary conditions, lack of health services, shortage of water and mattresses as some of their challenges.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Jonathan and his team also made similar donations to other victims at GSS, Negatavah.

Amaechi: Wike has reversed all progressive projects I did in Rivers – Minister

Wike has reversed every good project I did in Rivers - Amaechi

Ex-Governor Amaechi has blamed incumbent governor Wike for reversing all the progressive projects he did in Rivers state.

The minister of transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said River state Governor, Nyesom Wike has reversed all the progressive and laudable projects he did in the state.

“Today, the current government has reversed everything we did including free education and free healthcare care policies in Rivers State,” Amaechi said on Saturday, February 10, 2018.

The minister, who was the former governor of Rivers state, has constantly criticized the incumbent governor, saying little or nothing has been done to supersede his previous achievements.

Fulfilling Saro Wiwa's dream for Ogoniland

Amaechi, stressed that he tried to walk in the footsteps of late Ken Saro Wiwa while he was the governor of Rivers State and almost lost his life in the process in 2015.

“Saro-Wiwa was killed by the then machinery of power because of his belief that Ogonis and the Niger Delta should be liberated.

“I could have been killed by same machinery of power when we were fighting to install President Muhammadu Buhari because we fought the same power that killed Saro-Wiwa,” he said.

Continuing, Amaechi said: “Everybody is now claiming to love Ogoni and knew Ken Saro-Wiwa because of election.

“If you love Ogoni, bring projects to Ogoni, train their children because as governor, I trained Ogoni children overseas.

“I made sure that government paid all the fees because education was one of the issues that Saro-Wiwa died for.

“When I became governor, there was no light in Bori and we brought light from Port Harcourt to the city.

“It was because of poverty I experienced that made me to build primary schools, primary health centres and employed teachers and doctors respectively," he said.

Amaechi noted that just like Saro Wiwa, he fought for the liberation of Ogoni people, south-south and the Niger Delta.

New York Fashion Week: Christian Siriano's show is the highlight of the week as he champions diversity

Christian Siriano and Orange is the New Black star, Danielle Brooks

All races and all sizes were represented at Christian Siriano's important and poignant NYFW show

At Christian Siriano's Fall 2018 presentation,in honour of the designer’s 10th anniversary, he chose to champion diversity and promote the importance of representation and that's why his show is being called the highlight of NYFW.

Christian Siriano turned his runway into a powerful platform that touched on social issues. “It’s our only time we get to put our thoughts out there to the world. It’s very visual, so you have to convey these things without speaking. It’s 12 minutes. It has to be powerful,” the designer told press at his show today.

He’s also fighting back against unrealistic body standards in the industry by having plus-size supermodel, Ashley Graham open his show. Of the decision, Siriano said, “I had to open the show with Ashley Graham to show that a curvy woman could open a show at fashion week. That’s never been done.”

It wasn't just models but actresses too as Selma Blair and “Orange is the New Black” star Danielle Brooks modelled the 32-year-old’s latest designs in order to highlight the causes he’s passionate about. “I wanted Selma because she was at the head of the #metoo movement,” he revealed, sharing that he wanted to celebrate powerful women and that he “needed her” on the runway prove that.

Siriano has done a lot in his ten-year career to champion both gender and size diversity. From plus-size collections to weighing in on race and gender issues, Siriano shows that the world's of fashion, politics and activism do not have to be mutually exclusive and he uses his platform to draw much needed awareness.

Cameroonian soldiers ‘invade’ Cross River community

Cameroonian soldiers. PHOTO: VOA

The on-going unrest in neighbouring Cameroon between militants and Government forces continues to spill into border communities in Nigeria. Last week some Cameroon security forces raided Danare in Boki Local Government Area of Cross River State ostensibly in search of militants. Although no life was lost, citizens were alarmed by the impunity of Cameroon forces. They were said to have fired sporadically into the air while the exercise lasted putting fear in the hearts of ordinary folks. They also promised to return to catch the militants who have crossed into Nigeria and are taking refuge in the forests in Danare. The report also added that some of the militants also fired back. This is unacceptable. The Nigerian Government must take steps to protect its borders at all times.

This is a matter of international significance. Cross border raids can only be carried out with cooperation between both countries involved. The artificial boundaries of African nations are partially responsible for the fluid movements of citizens from one country to the other. People commit crimes in one zone and move to the other. They sneak into a new environment and blend with the population until the heat is over. They then plan another onslaught. The Boko Haram scourge is one of such anomalies that has plagued the country. It is for this reason that President Muhammadu Buhari visited neighbouring countries shortly after he sworn in as President. He needed their cooperation to deal with the security challenges created by roaming criminals. It was the right thing to do. Cross-border crimes are a reality. Boko Haram also operates from Cameroon.

Nigeria and Cameroon should work out the technical details of entering Nigerian soil while chasing militants. Except there is mutual cooperation and agreement such incursions amount to military invasion. International protocols for such movements are well laid out. The first consideration for both nations is the security of citizens. No nation should tolerate an incursion into its territories without the necessary guarantee of safety of its citizens. So far the impression is that the Nigerian government cannot be bothered about the activities of Cameroonian troops in Cross River. This is because of the huge security challenge that currently preoccupying the nation’s armed forces.

The Federal Government should take urgent steps to police the nation’s borders. Apart from criminals freely moving from one country to another, there is also the problem of smuggling. In some of the borders, there is infinite lawlessness. Indeed people in the area do not recognize the borders. Some of their kith and kin live on the other side of the border. For them therefore it is not a question of in and out. It is for this reason that smuggling of contraband, deleterious to the national economy has proven difficult if not impossible to curtail. The security implications are grave. Any nation that cannot police its borders effectively cannot have full control over its resources and people.

The crisis in Cameroon is also an indication of dissatisfaction with the political situation in that country. The great tension which exists between the northern and southern parts of Cameroon has led to an upsurge in the number of displaced persons taking refuge in Nigeria, particularly in Cross river State. We also have not forgotten the Bakassi Peninsula matter that almost ruined the cordial relationship between the two countries. The fluid nature of the border problem calls for a persistent and well articulated response to the situation in Danare.

Under international law, the displaced persons deserve protection from the Nigerian Government. The conflict is an internal matter and as a nation we cannot get involved in their disputes. But because when there is crisis in that country it could spill into Nigeria, the Federal Government should take more than a passing interest in the climate of uncertainty in Cameroon. Strong diplomatic actions through the African Union in the tradition of being a brother’s keeper are in order.

The porous points of our borders should be properly policed. With the upsurge of violence carried out by herdsmen we are not too sure whether infiltrators from international terror groups has not started. We must not be caught napping. The obligation of securing the nation’s land, sea and air borders along with the safety of life and property rests squarely on the shoulders of the Federal Government. It must not shirk its responsibilities to the Nigerian people. The oath of office which the President and other State officials took must be the guiding spirit behind actions. The people of Danare and Cross river State need reassurance that they will not be left to the caprices of overzealous soldiers on Nigerian soil.

A Focus On Police Invitation To Afegbua

The Police High Command last week declared wanted Kassim Afegbua, spokesman of the former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd).

Jimoh Moshood, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPPRO), in a statement said the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, had has ordered Afegbua’s immediate arrest “for making false statements, injurious falsehood, defamation of character and for act capable of inciting public disturbance throughout the country.”

Moshood in the statement, was quoted to have said: “He (Afegbua) is therefore declared wanted by the Nigeria Police Force and should report at the nearest police station anywhere he is in the country.”

The police statement came more than 24 hours after online reports had said the police were looking for Afegbua after he issued the widely circulated statement on the state of the nation, that was credited to Babangida.

In the statement, Babangida criticised Buhari’s leadership and urged him to step aside for a new generation of leaders in 2019. Babangida’s statement, came few days after former President Olusegun Obasanjo had in an open letter, asked Buhari not to contest the 2019 presidential election, as his administration has been lack-lustre.

However, Babangida was alleged to have disowned the statement and purportedly issued another one, said to have been signed by him, in which he allegedly canvassed for the realignment of political forces for the emergence of two strong parties in the country.

Afegbua however insisted in a television programme that he had the full authorisation of General Babangida to issue the statement. Babangida also spoke to a newspaper, confirming that his first statement issued by Afegbua was authentic.

However, the matter took a different turn when last Tuesday Afegbua slammed a N1 billion suit on the Nigeria Police Force, the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, and some media houses.

Afegbua said he was suing the police to protest alleged harassment and persecution. The case was filed at the Federal High Court, Abuja on Tuesday through his lawyer. The suit number is FHC/ABJ/CS/129/2018. He asked for N1 billion as damages for infringing on his fundamental human rights.

Afegbua argued through his lawyer, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, that he was not been formally invited by the police before he was declared wanted and painting him as a fugitive and common criminal with no modicum of dignity.

He described his being declared wanted as a “witch-hunt, harassment, intimidation and persecution,” as his boss had not denied the statement he issued on his behalf. According to him, the police, the IGP, and the Force PRO used the media houses to declare him wanted.

He maintained that declaring him wanted was baseless, as he had never been formally invited by the police or resisted an arrest by the police before the declaration was made.

Police, Afegbua Resolve Difference

However, when Afegbua reported at the Police Headquarters last Wednesday in Abuja, the story changed. Emerging from the meeting with the Police, Afegbua, who went there with Ajulo, his counsel, declared that the police had apologised for declaring him wanted.

Afegbua said: “The Police said there was a mix-up somewhere to have warranted me being declared wanted, and they apologised.

“They said that the police is for the people; in a democracy it is their responsibility to be there for the people, not to intimidate, not to harass me.

“That they didn’t intend to harass me, they didn’t intend to intimidate me. Of course, you know we have a case in court, my lawyers will advise what steps we are going to take.”

Afegbua disclosed that Babangida, his principal, gave him the needed support all through the period that the controversy lasted.

He said: “It will even interest you to know that when I was declared wanted on Channels TV and Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), my boss IBB was the one who called me and said ‘why are they declaring you wanted? Are you a criminal?’ And we laughed over it.”

“He also asked if I was on the run and if I have been given invitation and he said, okay that is interesting. My boss said he heard on the news that they talked about defamation of character and he asked whose character have you defamed?

“So, I am very much in touch with him and I am not doing anything out of the blues. He is a man I have been with for the past 14 years as spokesman. Even when I went to serve in my state, I was still very much in touch with him. I have said it before that I am part and parcel of him, we are family and so I don’t have any cause to worry over anything.

“I am only here personally because I was declared wanted. I am not on the run; I am not a fugitive to the law, and as a responsible Nigerian I feel it was unwise on the part of the police to declare me wanted when I have not been formally invited. So I am here to present myself. I am here with my wife, other family members and my lawyer.”

However, since the incident happened, the question in the minds of several Nigerians is: Is the Nigerian Police right in declaring Afegbua wanted for issuing a statement on behalf of his principal? Some also wonder that if the Police could have happened to Babangida’s spokesperson, what could have happened if he was an ordinary Nigerian who has no close knit with a former President.

Police Have No Right To Declare Afegbua Wanted – Businessman

Wilson Okaru, a Minna-based businessman, maintained that in an ideal situation where freedom of speech is observed, the Nigerian Police has no right to declare Afegbua wanted for allegedly issuing a statement on behalf of his principal.

He said: “I have known Kassim Afegbua with Babangida for as long as I can remember. I am not holding forth for Afegbua or Babangida, but I will not be in a hurry to believe that Afegbua acted outside his principal’s desires.

“Babangida has worked with Afegbua serving as his Chief Press Secretary during his days as Military Head of State. So, it will be difficult for anyone to convince me that what Afegbua released to media houses was not the one approved by Babangida.

“Again, journalists being what they are, have the right and ability to interpret the content of the press statement their own way or to suit individual media houses’ style, which to me is what could have brought about the initial denials by Babangida or his son, Mohammed. I think there is a mix-up somewhere because I don’t believe that Babangida is afraid of anybody at his age, not even President Muhammadu Buhari himself, take it or leave it, because he has seen it all being a one-time Military Head of State.

“Again, what has happened or what is happening between President Buhari’s government and IBB should be an eye opener and calls for caution on the part of our elder statesmen who after giving the go-ahead for someone to manage their media affairs by giving them the rights to speak on their behalf, only to come up with denials, thereby creating unfavourable situation as what we are witnessing today.

“Some of our elders like Chief Olusegun Obasanjo will speak for himself. Like him or hate him, he speaks for himself unlike the likes of IBB who I may say prefers to live within an enclave. That is why we have what we are witnessing now.

“Babangida, as at the last time I read about the saga, has owned up that he approved what Afegbua sent to media houses, coming out to claim that the document was not as he wanted it released, is immaterial and I think at this time, Babangida should be given the opportunity to tell Nigerians what he meant by that.

“There was no need for the Police declaring Afegbua wanted like a common criminal simply because he is exercising his rights to freedom of speech. Even if his principal (IBB) denies him, he still has the right to own up that the words were his. Or, is he not old enough to comment on any national issue?”

‘Police Acted In Haste – NCP Chief

Nzeh Cyprian Emejuru Igwe, a public affairs commentator and chieftain of the National Conscience Party (NCP), said: “The reactions emanating from Nigerians in respect of the letter reportedly written by the former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, to President Buhari and the position taken by police authorities, are quite interesting.

“It is another intrigue enveloping our still fledgling democracy. General Babangida is saying that he never authorised his spokesman to forward the controversial letter and that his media man, Kassim Afegbua, , leading to the declaration of the latter wanted by the Inspector General of Police.

“Curiously, Afegbua who is now in the eyes of the storm, is insistent that he actually secured the blessing of his boss before doing what he did. He went further to state that the alleged denial of the contentious statement by his boss was the handwork of some close associates of the Minna-born retired military president, who thought they are more Catholic than the Pope.

“Now, the poser is: “Did the gap-toothed retired Army General actually approve the letter before it was sent out? The police should therefore get in touch directly with General Babangida and not by proxy to ascertain if the letter is indeed his or not.

“A letter to a sitting president is sensitive and volatile more so when it borders on fundamental national issues. If General Babangida can come out boldly and make a categorical statement on this, then from there, we can take it.

“For now, the police has a lot of work to do and it was therefore premature to have declared Afegbua wanted based on the statement he was said to have made on behalf of his boss. The former military president is a man of principle who is not afraid of taking a decision.

“Remember that while in office, he was once quoted as saying that ‘history will forgive you if you take a wrong decision as a leader, but that history will not forgive you if you do not take any decision at all.”

‘Some leaders’ aides are sometimes overzealous’

Chief Benson Kamalu Egbejimba, a Second Republic politician and businessman, on his own maintained: “If Afegbua can prove it beyond all reasonable doubts that his boss, General Babangida directed him to release the statement, then, the police should not have declared him wanted, otherwise he should be held responsible for the heat the letter has generated in the polity.

“You know, some of the aides of our leaders are sometimes overzealous and too anxious in the discharge of their duties, just because they want to be seen and admired as good boys by their masters.

“To me, the police are right to declare him wanted. Let him explain more of the origin of the letter because of the heat it has generated. This will serve as a deterrent to others.”

IGP’s Action Is Condemnable – Journalist

Abdulrafiu Ayobami, a journalist and public affairs commentator, has condemned the action of the Inspector General of Police declaring Kassim Afegbua, the spokesperson to the former military President, Ibrahim Babangida, wanted over a statement issued on behalf of his principal.

Ayobami, who explained that the action of the police authority has political undertone and borne out of eye-service syndrome, noted that what Afegbua was accused of for declaring him wanted, was not criminal, but political.

He said that for the police authority to take such a step on political issue was not good enough for the nation’s democracy. He declared that Afegbua has not committed any crime by issuing a statement on behalf of his principal, adding that he was acting on a certain directive and if such statement did in any way affect the person of Mr. President, Afegbua is not the one to suffer for such ill statement, but his principal.

Ayobami stressed: “The action of the police is inappropriate, more so as he has not been invited or refused to honour such police invitation. The police should have first of all invited Afegbua for interrogation if need be, rather than declaring him wanted as if he committed any criminal offence.”

Ayobami therefore called on police authorities to tender unreserved public apology to Afegbua for its action and cautioned the IGP against getting into political war between two past military officers, Buhari and Babangida. He maintained that under the law, every Nigerian has his or her fundamental rights that must be respected by any constituted authority or institution.

‘Why Didn’t IGP Go After Babangida?’

Mr. Jonathan Enegide, a Benin based legal practitioner said: “As far as I am concerned, there is no constitutionality in what happened. All that we saw is publications in the newspapers that IBB’s spokesman has been declared wanted by the police and you do not declare somebody wanted on the pages of newspapers.

“I am yet to find any publication with the police logo with the name of Kassim Afegbua as a wanted person. Now, taking that as a foundation, I want to also feel that the law of agency is by extension the question of disclosed principal. If a man is acting on behalf of another, a named person, as soon as the principal is disclosed, all liabilities go to the principal. So, in this case Babangida is the disclosed principal to Kassim Afegbua.

“The issue is: What law has Kassim Afegbua infringed? Is it Babangida that is taking on him to say okay you have misrepresented me, or you went and stated what I did not send you?

“That should be the crux of the matter and before you declare the messenger wanted, what about the owner of the message? Have you also declared him wanted because in all of these I have never heard anything about police trying to confirm or otherwise from the former military leader and from the grapevine, we heard too that the man has come up to say look, I claim responsibility, indirectly, because silence is consent.

“If your subordinate is being harassed by the police, you have not come out to say police deal with him, he did not do what I sent him and you are indirectly funding his release from the police. Well, it is all about politicising the whole thing and from the information I gathered, Kassim Afegbua has visited the IGP and was given presidential treatment and is out of the place.

“So, a man that is declared wanted cannot sit in the comfort of the IGP’s office and thereafter, walks home happy thereafter.

“Afegbua is a seasoned gentleman, he is not one that is just doing that job for the fun of it. He knows the implications of all his actions and whatever action he has taken, he is able to defend. That is a plus on his own part and I commend him for it.”

Babangida, Obaanjo’s Letters To Buhari Was Timely – Okowa’s Aide

Barrister Fred Latimore Oghenesivbe, Executive Assistant to Governor of Delta State on Communications, who spoke on former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Babaginda’s letters to Buhari, said: “The two former leaders of our country, have shown through their timely actions, that they are indeed worthy Nigerians who care for the survival of our people and this country, at a time the APC national government under President Buhari failed woefully to deliver on electioneering promise made to Nigerians in 2015 as encapsulated in the CHANGE mantra.

“The assertions of both leaders in their letters goes to show that the government of the day performed abysmally poor to an extent that insecurity has enveloped our country, particularly the unlawful killings perpetuated by Fulani herdsmen in some states.

“It can no longer be condoned. Apart from insecurity, there is frustration, depression, high rate of unemployment, the value of the Naira has become a national embarrassment, exchanging at official rate of N365 to $1 as against N164 to $1 on May 29, 2015.

“The Buhari administration, through Federal Ministry of Power jacked up electricity tariff by 250 per cent in midst of acute economic recession and poverty; increased the cost of pump price of petrol from N96 to N145 per litre and in some states a litre of the commodity is sold at a cost between N180 and N220.

“In the history of our nascent democracy, President Buhari is the only leader who spent more time on medical vacation abroad than any past president, far and above that of late President Musa Yar’Adua of blessed memory.

“Buhari has been regrettably unproductive, clueless, bereaved of socioeconomic ideas and therefore cannot present himself for re-election. In the light of the above, it is safe to assert that the intentions of former President Obasanjo and Babaginda are genuine and I strongly advise Buhari to honourably bow out and allow a competent hand to take over the affairs of our nation come 2019.”

Okorocha, Madumere Remains Your Best Bet

“I understand the vision of my boss. I feel his pulse in his passion to render service to humanity. In all these, keep it simple and ensure you make input to make your leader succeed because that is one of the reasons he has me around.

“He is gifted. You should also pray that God grants you the grace to be able to understand him at every point in time, interpret his vision and you must be proactive to ensure a smooth sail of work plans.

“Again, always show deference to your father irrespective of your knowledge, exposure or whatever because such is the heavenly prize you must pay in gratitude. What Governor Okorocha has exposed me to in his magnanimity is nothing money can buy.”

The above excerpt was how the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Prince Ezeakonobi Madumere,  way back in September 2016, in an interview with some reporters,  gave an insight into how deep the relationship he shares with his principal, Governor Rochas Okorocha  is.

Wake Madumere up from deep sleep and ask him about his boss, assuming there is something negative or damaging to the image of Okorocha, you are likely going to get a response not different from what he said in the above quotation that highlights the depth of love they share as political associates and family.

Perhaps, one man who understands the chemistry of Madumere’s relationship with Okorocha too well is Dr. Chuks Osuji, the United States of America trained historian and undisputable public relations icon and former Imo State Director of MAMSER.

In a piece he wrote recently tagged “Prince Madumere And The Dignity Of Politics”, Osuji, a man who represents the conscience of Imo masses and the elite said:  “We all know that Prince Madumere is a long time confidant of Owelle, long before Owelle became the Governor of Imo State. Such a long relationship transcends political relationship….

“Secondly, it is clear that Prince Madumere has earned and continuously for nearly six years now that Owelle went to the government with Madumere, as Chief of staff, Government House (Prime Minister), and secondly as the Deputy Governor, his trust and confidence.

“Evidently, his Excellency is a unique person with different complexional and unpredictable operational variables. Some may say very difficult to comprehend appropriately. Yes, but like every other individuals he certainly has two personalities, the public and private personalities. One can therefore say that except Owelle’s spouse, Prince Madunmere is one individual; that can adequately read and analyze Owelle’s disposition.

“During the years of interwoven relationship, the ups and downs, Prince Madumere has remained constantly and unequivocally loyal, trust worthy and reliable. And he has never been known to criticize his boss in private or in public.

“Besides, he has preferred to remain as what John Collins, a social psychologist referred to as grand master of character assessment and adherent to ensure that two different individuals of different kinds remain as one almost two in one.

“Furthermore, since within the last few months as 2019 elections were drawing nearer, people in various press speculations tend to stir some issues of concern which Prince Madumere could emotionally react to, but has remained incontestably calm, quiet and non-committal, believing as he always believe, he is ‘Nwachinemere’, because whatever he has gained from Owelle he gained to the cost of his undiluted loyalty. And Owelle knows it.

“What is more, with such noble trust, he believes that this is time to continue to serve his boss and not time to begin to be drawn into preventable and worthless actions and speeches that would compromise his outstanding qualities for which Owelle loves, trusts and relies on him. Why must he rock the boat?”

Any moment from now, Okorocha will unveil to Ndi-Imo the man after his heart as far as 2019 and who succeeds him is concerned.

Going by what Okorocha told reporters during the week, he knows who will or not succeed him, and definitely the likes of former Senator representing Okigwe zone, Ifeanyi Ararume or the former governor, Ikedi Ohakim are not on the succession radar.

Though Okorocha did not expatiate on his beef with Araraume, he spoke so eloquently why Ohakim should not be allowed to return to the Government House, Owerri. “Ohakim will be on a revenge mission and cannot be trusted with state resources any longer,” Okorocha said.

Okorocha said of Ohakim: “If the former governor, by any means, returns to power, he will loot the state blind to make up for the long time he was out of power.

“I learnt that Ohakim is contesting the governorship in 2019. But this time, he is seeking for vengeance, and if he finds his way to power, he will pack the money of the state to cover up for those years he was out of power. So Imo people should not allow that to happen.

“The governor we want is a man that will continue with what we have done, because my administration has laid a solid foundation for the next governor.”

Explaining why he has not disclosed his likely successor, Okorocha said part of the reason was a deliberate ploy not to expose the person to harm.

Hear him: “If I show them my successor now, they will kill him. The politicians here are very wicked, but at the right time, when I disclose the identity of my successor, I will stand behind him to protect him.”

Tongues are wagging as to who the person Okorocha wants to unveil would or should be. What is of paramount importance is that the governor had indicated interest in letting whosoever his choice would be to meet the desires of the electorate, who eventually would cast their ballot for the person as stakeholders in the Imo project.

Many names have sprung up in Imo as aspirants to the number one seat. Unfortunately, many analysts and commentators know for sure that not all those aspiring for the governorship ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) of Imo are really in the race. To many commentators, there could be more spoilers of shows than are aspirants.

As I write, none of the governor’s associates is yet to formally declare, even though from grapevine, the likes of Madumere; the Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, Acho Ihim; Okorocha’s Chief of Staff and son in-law, Uche Nwosu; his former Secretary to the State Government, Jude Ejiogu, another in-law of Okorocha, who is a House of Representatives member, Chike Okafor; a top banker with the Zenith Bank Plc, Stanley Amuchie and George Eche are said to be interested in succeeding him.

When the above persons make their own aspiration known, they would join one person, Air Commodore Peter Gbujie (rtd) whose has become public knowledge, to seek the nod of Imo APC electorate.

For the purpose of this intervention, the point ought to be made that nobody indicates interest in governing a state without the person having something to offer. So, to that extend, it is commendable that we have such number of brothers from Imo with genuine interest in taking over from the governor any time he exits office in 2019. They all need to be congratulated.

But beyond that, governance and leadership transcend mere showing of interest, and that is where we ought to be critical of whoever Okorocha unveils at this point in time. Suffice, therefore, to say that the pedigree, capacity, and chances of the lucky one garnering the support of the generality of the Imolites in such a way that it would turn to electoral victory for the party must be the starting point.
