Opinion: Are you leaving your children an inheritance?

Family photo

The New York Times recently wrote about how retirement is different if you don’t have children. But we also asked readers to tell us if they are leaving an inheritance for their children and how their decisions have affected their finances and family. Their stories have been condensed and edited for clarity.

“There is no reason I should leave anything to my children.”

Michael Stoll, 63, of Germantown, Tennessee, retired from his career as a certified public accountant four years ago.

His wife, Nancy, 66, left her job in 1982 when they had their first child. They have two children, 33 and 35, and three grandchildren, 4, 7 and 14 months.

It’s really one of my beliefs that there is no reason I should leave anything to my children. I’m not looking to leave them a legacy, I’m not looking to enrich them, they’re fine on their own. I will either burn everything up with my wife or we’ll give it away to charity.

My wife and I have been so blessed with our health, our children, our livelihoods, whether through our church or any organization that helps the poor. The only thing that we will do is make absolutely certain that our grandchildren will have enough money in their 529 plans to go to college.

My whole philosophy was when the children went to school, they were on the “Stoll scholarship,” which required them to have at least a 3.0 average and it required them to graduate in four years and it didn’t allow them to come back home. Neither one of them came home; there was no boomerang. We have well-rounded children and they’re doing terrific on their own. I always joke they are off my payroll and it’s the best feeling ever. As a matter of fact, they usually pay for us.

I’ve never realized how much I would enjoy being retired. Before, I worked hard to make money, now I work hard to save money, whether it’s grocery shopping or household utilities, it makes it so easy here in the mid-South to economize. I may have enough to live past 100!

“I want to give my children more than what I had.”

Susana Kuehne, 27, of Becker, Minnesota, is a patent agent at a law firm. Her husband, Jerrad, 26, served in the Navy and is now a stay-at-home parent to their 3-year-old son. Kuehne is pregnant.

I grew up in a home where there was just no concept of saving. It never bothered me, since I didn’t know much, I didn’t expect much. I saw my parents struggle the whole way through. That was striking to me. It makes me sad that they had to grow up like that. I know they gave us more than what they had, and I want to give my children more than what I had. So it’s important to me. We don’t have to give him a trust fund, but we have to give him something in case something happens.

I don’t contribute to an IRA, I don’t feel comfortable with that, so we focus on saving. We purposefully just don’t put it in the bank anymore, it’s too easy to transfer when you’re in the negative. Both times we’ve had almost $10,000 in savings, but had to take it out. People don’t understand why you say you’re broke when you have a job. No one talks about these things, but being broke is not having these savings. For some people, they say I’ll just invest in retirement in my 40s or 50s and the older people I’ve talked to say that’s not at all the right way to go.

When I became pregnant the first time I didn’t have a job and I realized I never want to be in a situation where I can’t provide for my child. I wanted to make sure I had a safety net. But we had to learn the hard way that you cannot lean on credit cards. We’re playing catch-up, but we’re so young and in four years our mortgage will be way lower, our loans will be paid off. We actually started tithing this past Christmas, we felt a need to give back. I’m very religious and it finally kind of struck that one of the reasons I’m so overwhelmed sometimes is that I’m not giving back. I believe you have to save, you have to tithe and you have to pay the rest off; it just becomes a long list of things to do.

“We don’t live extravagantly, but we are not lacking for anything.'’

Anand Rami, 63, of Vancouver, Washington, retired from his career as a software engineer almost three years ago. His wife, Angela, 64, is also retired. Since the birth of their first child she has been a stay-at-home parent and before that, worked as an accounting clerk. Their sons are 29 and 33.

I’ve been fortunate enough to have more than enough for retirement; we don’t live extravagantly, but we are not lacking for anything that we want and we do have a fairly substantial amount of assets. Both of our sons are doing quite well with their significant others, and we won’t be leaving them a significant portion, but every little bit helps and who knows what the future holds?

My parents both had to work in the United States in nonprofessional positions and when they passed away there really wasn’t much left at all, and we didn’t expect anything, so basically my sisters and I had to keep working.

In my professional career I was fortunate enough to have good contacts, an immigrant work ethic, and even though when I was earning just a middle-class salary it was our decision to save as much as we can, even if it meant foregoing vacations and new cars. As a rule, I managed to save 10 percent of my income, pretax, every month and over time it just built up.

“It’s like the old saying, teach a person to fish rather than feed them.”

Dennis Smith, 62, of Buffalo, New York, is a network specialist at the Board of Cooperative Educational Services. He is deciding whether to retire in 2 1/2 years or wait until 65, for the full benefits. His wife Cindy, 54, works in retail and expects to be working for some time after he retires. His sons are 28, 30 and 32.

My sons all have been out of college for several years, and they’re all successful in their careers. If my kids were in a different situation, certainly I would be more helpful. But at this point, there’s not a lot they need from me. I think they would be happy if I end up not being a burden to them, which I’m not planning to be, but who knows what happens down the road.

I’m helpful in other ways. My youngest son bought a house not too long ago and I’ve helped him and his wife learn how to do some of the maintenance, improvements. It’s like the old saying, teach a person to fish rather than feed them.

“We want to create an environment where he has the ability to do what he needs to do.”

Fahima Andersen, 60, of Hudson County, New Jersey, is a headhunter. Her husband, Craig, 60, is a project manager at a school. They have an 11-year-old son. They do not have plans to retire anytime soon.

We are saving for a college education and we put aside money every month toward his college fund. Another thing we’ve done is to buy property in Washington, D.C. and the mortgage has been fully paid. We own a house in Hudson County and it’s a two-family rental unit that helps us defray costs. We put a certain amount away for retirement. I have a 401(k) that I’m fully vested in, and we have an IRA.

The reason why I believe in giving something to my children is not because I want an entitled child, but I believe if I have the ability to support his efforts, and he’s not going off and making a rock band but doing something entrepreneurial, I will. He’s talking about becoming a paleontologist and simultaneously doing something on social media specifically related to science, and so that’s something I feel I can support. That’s what I’m seeing from most of his kids in his age group, they’re talking about working for themselves and creating their own work spaces and, for that, you do have to have to some seed money. That’s why we want to create an environment where he has the ability to do what he needs to do. It doesn’t change the fact that we encourage charity in our home, we are Muslim and he has a Zakat jar, which is used for charity and is one of the five pillars of Islam.

Both of our parents basically paid for our college, which gave us the best foot forward into the future and that’s why we feel we should do the same thing. What we try to encourage is not a sense of entitlement, if he acts that way we discourage that. We talk about the fact that there are people not as fortunate as he is. That’s really how we’ve started to talk about it at home, we haven’t said, well you’re going to get all of this handed to you when we die because he’s too little. The whole idea of us passing away would probably put him in shock, so what we do do, is start to help him understand all of this.

“Putting my kids through college, that’s their inheritance.”

Carol Reardon, 50, of Bahama, North Carolina, is a captain at the Durham County Fire Department. She estimates that she is about four years away from retirement. Her husband, Sean, 46, who also works at the Fire Department, is about nine years from retirement. They have three children, 22, 24 and 26.

My husband and I will be in the Caribbean when we retire. I’m going to enjoy myself. I worked really hard to be in the Fire Department at a time when it wasn’t easy, but it was worth the sacrifice for the life I provided.

Putting my kids through college, that’s their inheritance. That is my gift to them, I think that’s a good investment, more so than just leaving them a nice chunk of change. The kids know that I’m not working to leave them a big inheritance. I did the best I could do for them and when I retire I’m going to enjoy myself, do more for me and not so much for them anymore.

My mother worked for the federal government, under the same pension plan idea that I have, so that’s very important to me. She does have a little trust fund for all us five kids, so it’s not much, but she doesn’t spend any of it and she wants to save it for us. But I really think she does that because she didn’t provide money for our college degrees; she didn’t have the means to do for us growing up like I do for my kids. The best thing she prepared me for was to work to have a retirement plan.

Rick Ross: Panic as ailing US rapper is reportedly put on life support

Rick Ross

Ross was reportedly treated using a procedure called ECMO – a technique used to oxygenate his blood outside of his body before it's pumped back into his body.

US rapper Rick Ross is reportedly on life at a Miami-area hospital after he was rushed there on Friday, March 2, over heart complications.

TMZ reports that the 42-year-old Maybach Music Group (MMG) boss was hooked up to a machine that is performing the functions of his heart and lungs.

He is said to be currently getting treatment in the cardiatric unit.

The procedure was described as ECMO, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation – a technique used to oxygenate his blood outside of his body before it's pumped back into his body.

It was reported on Friday that someone from the rapper's home called 911 to report Ross' situation – he was said to be breathing heavily and unresponsive on Thursday morning.

However, a rapper Fat Trel who is signed to Ross'  label debunked the report that he is on life support.

"JUS TALKED 2 MY BIG HOMIE… HE GOOD… HE IN DA HOSPITAL BUT HE IS NOT ON “LIFE SUPPORT” … HE GOOD," Trel wrote on Instagram.

But in a follow-up event, TMZ reported, with a supposed photo proof, that Rick Ross' family raced to the hospital when they learnt his condition had worsened.

According to the report, one of Ross' baby mamas and several companions poured into a white Rolls-Royce and raced it to the hospital near Miami.

They were said to have forgotten to shut the car doors after they arrived at the hospital due to their "mad rush".

Business mogul, Sean Combs popularly known as Diddy also took to Instagram to solicit for prayers for Rick Ross.

Politics: Anthony Scaramucci is banned from visiting the White House

Anthony Scaramucci 3

News of his exclusionary status comes a day after he said he was not blocked.

  • Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci is reportedly on a list of people barred from visiting the White House.
  • That news comes a day after Scaramucci denied he was blocked.
  • Internal emails reveal that only White House chief of staff John Kelly or deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin would be able to override the rule.

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci is reportedly on a list of people barred from the White House, according to a Bloomberg report published Friday.

A White House official confirmed to Bloomberg that Scaramucci's name is on the list. That development comes a day after Scaramucci claimed he was not blocked, Bloomberg reported. He is among the former White House officials who left "under adverse circumstances," the report said.

Requests for a White House appointment for those on the list is said to require a "case by case" evaluation. Internal emails revealed that only White House chief of staff John Kelly or deputy chief of staff Joe Hagin would be able to override the rule.

Though a White House official told Bloomberg that Scaramucci was not specifically targeted for exclusion, Scaramucci reportedly believes Kelly has been preventing him from meeting with President Donald Trump. Kelly, who was hired last July, immediately implemented a military-like structure in the West Wing, and began regulating access to Trump.

Scaramucci was fired 10 days into the job and has since embarked on a campaign to discredit Kelly: "Does the president want to lose everyone because of General Jackass," Scaramucci asked, referring to Kelly's tenure as a Marine Corps general, to Bloomberg News.

Scaramucci is among a long list of former communications directors who served in the Trump administration amid record turnover. Hope Hicks is the latest communications director heading for the exits.

Strategy: Olive Garden denies sending a threatening letter to a Seinfeld parody account over a tweet that claimed it stopped selling AR-15 rifles

Olive Garden

The parody account @Seinfeld2000 posted a cease-and-desist email demanding that it delete a tweet that claimed Olive Garden stopped selling AR-15 rifles.

  • A spokesperson for the Olive Garden parent company, Darden Restaurants, denied that it sent a cease-and-desist letter to a Seinfeld parody account on Friday.
  • The apparently fake letter demanded that the account @Seinfeld2000 remove an earlier tweet that said, "respect to Olive Garden for no longer selling AR-15s at all their locations."
  • It asserts: "Olive Garden has spent years building its reputation as a family friendly restaurant that is safe for all patrons to dine in," and accuses the parody account of "spreading false, destructive and defamatory rumors."
  • “Our legal team has not been in contact with this individual or sent them the message that was posted,” a Darden Restaurants spokesperson told Business Insider in an email on Friday.

A spokesperson for the Olive Garden parent company, Darden Restaurants, denied that a lawyer representing the firm sent a cease-and-desist letter to a Seinfeld parody account on Friday.

The account, @Seinfeld2000,posted an image of a letter it claimed to have received from the company.

“Our legal team has not been in contact with this individual or sent them the message that was posted,” a Darden Restaurants spokeswoman told Business Insider via email.

The apparently fake letter accuses the account of "spreading false, destructive, and defamatory rumors" about it, stemming from an earlier tweet the account posted that said "respect to Olive Garden for no longer selling AR-15s at all their locations."

The parody account typically comments on modern-day happenings through the lens of humor that mirrors the 1990s sitcom, "Seinfeld."

The account's AR-15 tweet follows moves from multiple retailers that have announced changes to their gun-sales policies in the wake of the Parkland, Florida, mass shooting.

Companies including Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, and others have either said they would raise the minimum required age for certain gun purchases, or would stop selling certain types of guns entirely.

Other companies have said they would end their business partnerships with the National Rifle Association.

Finance: Elon Musk just posted a sensual Instagram picture with his tunnel-boring machine

Elon Musk

Elon Musk's Instagram post referenced Dan Hill's 1994 song "When We Touch."

  • On Friday Elon Musk posted a photo of himself on Instagram with one of the boring machines used by his tunneling business, the Boring Company.
  • The post's caption read, "Deep in the hole with my boring machine. Sometimes when we touch, the honesty’s too much …," a reference to Dan Hill's 1994 song "When We Touch."
  • Musk has used humorous and unconventional methods to raise money for the company, including selling branded hats and flamethrowers.

Elon Musk is known for his smart, personable approach to social media. Whether he's responding to complaints from Tesla customers, making jokes, or attacking his critics, Musk comes across as a real person on Twitter and Instagram, which is a rarity among Fortune 500 executives.

On Friday, Musk posted a photo of himself on Instagram with one of the boring machines used by his tunneling business, the Boring Company. Musk referenced Dan Hill's 1994 song "When We Touch," in the post's caption: "Deep in the hole with my boring machine. Sometimes when we touch, the honesty’s too much …," Musk wrote.

Musk founded the Boring Company out of frustration with Los Angeles' notoriously congested traffic. He hopes to use the company to create underground tunnel networks that could house new transportation systems like Hyperloop, which would carry passengers in pods at speeds of over 500 mph.

So far, the company has received approval to build test tunnels in Los Angeles and Baltimore, as well as a permit to begin initial digging and preparatory work in Washington, D.C. But the company will have to get approval from a large number of city and state governments if it hopes to make its tunnel network a reality.

Musk has used humorous and unconventional methods to raise money for the Boring Company. In October, Musk started selling a limited number of $20 hats bearing the company's name, and in January, Musk made branded flamethrowers available for $500 each.

In a new 2018 report, BI Intelligence takes an in-depth look at the most expansive self-driving car tests taking place in the US, and offers insights on the leaders in the self-driving car race.

GM

Tech companies and auto companies are all racing to be the first to roll out self-driving cars onto the road.

The stakes are high for everyone involved. The self-driving revolution and the prevalence of ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft threatens to reduce individual car ownership, which would eat into a sizeable piece of automakers' core business.

Meanwhile, tech companies are jockeying for a piece of the self-driving car market, which Apple CEO Tim Cook dubbed "the mother of all AI projects." These companies are all looking to deploy self-driving cars as part of a commercial ride-hailing service that would operate similarly to how Uber and Lyft do now.

In a new free report, BI Intelligence, Business Insider's premium research service, takes an in-depth look at the most expansive self-driving car tests taking place in the US, and offers insights on the leaders in the self-driving car race.

Tech: Rare blue ice usually only seen in the Arctic has come to US shores — and photographers are capturing stunning images

null

Photographers at Michigan's Great Lakes were in for a rare treat as bold blue ice burst into light this week.

Things are looking blue this week in Michigan.

On Sunday, people near The Mackinac Bridge — which straddles Lake Michigan to the West and Lake Huron to the East — noticed huge blue hunks of frozen lake water coming ashore.

It's a rare sight to see this kind of brightly colored ice in the state. Blue ice is usually seen in permanently chilly spots like Antarctica and the North Pole, as well as on other slippery glaciers around the world.

As a result, some photographers were downright giddy to share their photos with Business Insider.

Take a look.

It's been a cold winter in Michigan, with sub-freezing temperatures and lots of snow. On Monday, the view from Mackinaw City, up at the top of Michigan's lower peninsula, was quite a sight.

Blue-hued ice came towards the shores in jagged piles, inundating a local park where people trotted out to see the oddly colorful ice.

"The ice looks even better than photos can do justice," Photographer Jeff Caverly told Business Insider in an email.

Blue ice isn't any colder than normal ice. But it does have less air inside.

This ice is really dense.

Ice is typically white because of the tiny air bubbles that form inside the water as its freezing. You might be familiar with this if you've ever watched someone pour a beer into a glass.

"The white color of bubbles at the top of a dark beer work the same way," Photographer Benjamin Drummond explains on his "Blue Ice" website. When ice is white, it's because "small pockets of air reflect and scatter visible light," he says.

Ice only turns blue when it's so tightly packed that those air bubbles inside aren't big enough to reflect and scatter light anymore. The bubbles are so crammed together, they don't have as much room to let the light shine through.

As the scientists at the Alaska Satellite Facility (who see a lot of glacial blue ice) point out, the air bubbles are so consolidated in blue ice that if you put a hunk of blue ice into a glass of water, the pressurized chunk might blow up your glass.

At the north and south poles, where glacier ice slowly slides down towards the oceans, air often gets squeezed out of the ice, making it really dense like this.

Most blue ice shows up at the poles, but this year some compact glacier-style ice is showing up in the waters of The Great Lakes, which are the largest freshwater source on the Earth.

"Only the polar ice caps contain more water," the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says.

This isn't the first time that people in Michigan have seen blue ice, but it is pretty rare to get so much.

Blue ice does "show up from time to time," in Michigan, photographer Tori Burley told Business Insider in an email. "But the last time I saw them this big and gorgeous was in 2011."

Finance: TRUMP: 'Trade wars are good'

trump thumbs up

President Trump said that trade wars "easy to win." This comes the day after Trump annouced new taxes on steel and aluminum imports.

  • President Donald Trump said trade wars are "good, and easy to win" in a tweet Friday morning.
  • The declaration comes the day after the president announced new tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.

President Donald Trump appeared to welcome the possibility of a trade war in a tweet Friday morning, the day after announcing huge tariffs on steel and aluminum are coming.

"When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win," Trump said. "Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we win big. It’s easy!"

In an unexpected announcement during a meeting of US steel and aluminum executives Thursday, Trump said steel imports will be subject to a 25% tariff, which functions like a tax on imports, while aluminum will face a 10% tariff. The decision led to other nations, including allies like Canada and the European Union, to warn of retaliatory measures.

US stocks fell sharply after the opening bell, with the Dow Jones falling more than 300 points.

"We must protect our country and our workers. Our steel industry is in bad shape. IF YOU DON’T HAVE STEEL, YOU DON’T HAVE A COUNTRY!" Trump tweeted later Friday morning.

"When a country Taxes our products coming in at, say, 50%, and we Tax the same product coming into our country at ZERO, not fair or smart," he said. "We will soon be starting RECIPROCAL TAXES so that we will charge the same thing as they charge us."

Trump's move raised the spectre of a trade war, in which the US and other countries increase protectionist measures back and forth. Economists say such a fight would ultimately increase prices for US consumers and possibly lead to a broad economic slowdown.

"Extremely concerning stance," Paul Mortimer-Lee, chief US economist for BNP Paribas, said in response to Trump's tweet. "History suggests trade wars lead to everyone losing."

Ian Shepherdson, chief economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, tweeted a joking reply to Trump's first tweet Friday morning.

"Looks like someone with zero understanding of basic economics has got access to the US President's Twitter this morning," Shepherdson said. "He probably should change his password."

Additionally, many experts say the steel and aluminum tariffs may just be the start of Trump's crackdown on trade since the president promised serious action during the campaign.

"While we are still far from a global trade war, we continue to stress that the US administration is likely to continue to pull on the protectionist lever in 2018 – feeling emboldened by the recent passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act and Bipartisan Budget Act," Gregory Daco, chief US economist at Oxford Economics, said in a note Thursday.

There are a number of monumental policy moves on trade Trump could make in the near future, including starting the process of pulling the US out of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and imposing restrictions on the export of intellectual property to China.

Solange Knowles: Singer stars in eccentric shoot for the cover of Billboard magazine

Solange strikes a pose in a black suit for Billboard magazine

Solange Knowles talks reinventing herself on her own terms and her triumphant return to the art world in Billboard interview.

Solange Knowles candidly revealed that she's 'not interested in entertainment' while posing in an eccentric shoot on the cover of the March issue of Billboard magazine.

Known for her offbeat style and for walking to the beat of her own drum, the Houston native posed in a black and white contemporary ensemble that featured puffy sleeves and unzipped knee-high boot-heels. Solange left her bleached afro blown out and accentuated her natural beauty with minimal makeup.

Beyonce's younger sister has always been the polar opposite to her superstar sibling and it's only in recent years that Solange has begun to bask in her uniqueness. This profound self-acceptance resulted in her biggest piece of work date, her number 1 album, 'A Seat at the Table'.

Speaking to Billboard about her celebrity status, the 31-year-old singer said: 'I’m clear within myself that I’m not interested in entertainment at this moment,' when asked about her professional focus. That might change. There might be a moment where I decide, "Hey, I love the game." For right now, I’m not [there].'

Earlier this month, the talented artist was named Harvard Foundation artist of the year. Solange told Billboard that the award was a 'colossal honour'.

She said: 'I didn’t come from a line of college-educated women. I feel so humbled and appreciative, [having been] an 18-year-old teenage mother who didn’t go to college, who always had to explore academia on her own.'

The actress also revealed that she is currently working on new music all over the word: 'I’ve been working in Laurel Canyon, Topanga Canyon and Jamaica. I actually have been following Joni Mitchell. It has been really wild. The house that I was just recording in [in] Jamaica, I stayed there for four days. And then the last day, the owner was like, "You know that mural that’s downstairs in the spare bedroom that the engineer booth is in? Joni Mitchell painted that."'

Tech: The digital camera industry saw growth in 2017 for the first time in nearly a decade

Beauty Bits: Katy Perry just revealed which cosmetic procedures she has — And hasn't — Undergone

Still, some people want to speak out about what they have or haven’t had done—and Katy Perry is one of them.

Plastic surgery is a very personal choice, and someone’s decision to get it (or not) is really no one’s business.

Still, some people want to speak out about what they have or haven’t had done—and Katy Perry is one of them.

Katy has been surrounded by rumors that she’s had a lot of plastic surgery for years. According to online gossip, Katy has had a boob job, nose job, and chin surgery, among other things—but Katy says it’s just not true.

"I haven't had any," she told Refinery29 in a new interview promoting her new makeup launch with CoverGirl. That doesn’t mean she hasn’t taken full advantage of her dermatologist—she just says she’s never actually been under the knife.

"I've done lasers and got [filler] injections under my eyes for the hollowing—which I'd recommend for everyone who wants a solution for their dark circles—but all of my assets are real,” Katy said. “People tend to think they are fake, but it doesn't really matter."

Katy said she has no problem with other people getting plastic surgery—she just hasn’t personally gone that route. “We're getting away from that negative stigma about physical alterations,” she said.

“Of course, always be your authentic self—but if someone wants a nose job that makes them feel better, and they love their profile more because of it, it's like 'Go ahead!' Do whatever makes you feel better about yourself. Stay in therapy, but get it, girl."

This isn’t the first time Katy has denied having plastic surgery. In 2014, she told GQ that she’s “never” had any work done. “Not a nose, not a chin, not a cheek, not a tit,” she said. “So my messages of self-empowerment are truly coming from an au naturel product.” Hopefully this latest comment will silence the nay-sayers once and for all.

Check out these crazy beauty treatments women have tried over the years:

Of course, as Katy points out, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with getting plastic surgery if it’s something you really want to do. Plenty of celebrities have opened up about getting work done, like Kylie Jenner, Iggy Azalea, and Courteney Cox.

Ultimately, you should do what makes you feel good. And, if you have work done and you don’t want to talk about it, that’s your choice. As Katy points out, it doesn’t really matter anyway.

We want free, fair and SMART TRADE!"

Losses were widespread with United Technologies (-2.18%), Boeing (-1.62%), Pfizer (-1.4%), and Walmart (-1.3%) posting the biggest declines on the Dow.
