Christan History: How 40 soldiers chose death over worshiping pagan gods

How 40 soldiers chose death over worshiping pagan gods

Once upon a time, some brave men decided to sacrifice themselves for their faith.

Here is an interesting story of how 40 soldiers chose death over worshiping pagan gods

On March 9, A.D. 320, some Christians in Sevaste, located in present-day Turkey, were faced with a difficult choice — to bow to pagan gods and live or be killed?

According to the history books, these men refused. They were taken to Governor Agricola, who tried to intimidate them with threats.

Speaking mildly but firmly, he said, “I am told you refuse to offer the sacrifice ordered by Emperor Licinius.”

“We will not sacrifice. To do so is to betray our holy faith,” one soldier replied.

The governor asked, “But what about your comrades? Consider — you alone of Caesar’s troops defy him! Think of the disgrace you bring upon your legion. How can you do it?”

Once again, a soldier said, “To disgrace, the name of our Lord Jesus Christ is more terrible still.”

“Give up this stubborn folly. You have no lord but Caesar! In his name, I promise promotion to the first of you who steps forward and does his duty,” the governor promised.

When no one moved, he continued, “You persist in your rebellion? Then prepare for torture, prison, death! This is your last chance. Will you obey your emperor?”

Standing firm, the soldiers said, “Nothing you can offer us would replace what we would lose in the next world. As for your threats — we’ve learned to deny our bodies where the welfare of our souls is at stake.”

Their resistance was met with an order from the governor who told the guards to flog them.

They were taken into the cold, where they were stripped, tied to posts and flogged with hooks of iron.

Despite the pain, loss of blood and severed bruises, the soldiers refused to give in.

“Chain them in my dungeons!” roared Agricola. “We’ll see what Lysias has to say about this.”

When the soldiers were brought before Lysias, the commander of the 12th Legion, he said, “You will obey me or pay a sharp penalty.”

Faced with their defiance, the governor had an idea to have them stripped and put in the icy pond.

He told the soldiers, “You will stand naked on the ice until you agree to sacrifice to the gods. “Take them down to the pond,” he ordered.

To his surprise, the soldiers did not wait to be stripped. Instead, they ran into the water as they removed their clothes.

“We are soldiers of the Lord and fear no hardship,” they sang. “What is our death but entrance into eternal life?”

In an attempt to tempt them, the governor ordered the guards to “heat baths of warm water.”

“Place them around the pond. That ought to lure them out pretty quickly,” he said with a smirk.

As the sun went down, they were heard praying, “Lord, there are forty of us engaged in this battle; grant that forty may be crowned and not one be missing from this sacred number.”

The shivering guards, waiting on the shore, shouted, “Don’t be idiots. What’s the point? Come on out. Warm yourselves!”

Then one guard pointed towards the sky, saying, “Look. Don’t you see them? Spirits…hovering with golden crowns over those fellows heads, holding out rich robes for them!”

To which, another guard replied, “Are you out of your mind? It’s pitch black. Hey! There’s someone coming! It’s one of them.”

He was right as one of the soldiers had lost his nerve and crawled out off the ice towards the hot water bath.

The soldier is said to have died as soon as his body touched the hot water.

He was replaced by the guard who had seen the vision of crowns. Without delay, he removed his clothes and joined the 39 soldiers in the ice.

When morning came, Governor Agricola was told that the forty were dead.

“Well, get the bodies off the ice,” he commanded. “Burn them. And dump the ashes in the river.”

Their ashes were later collected and preserved in local churches.

350 years later, a plaque was dedicated to these brave 40 martyrs in the chapel in the forum of Rome.

“Here die 40 men for Christ,” are the words engraved on it.

Indonesian Uni. bans burqa-wearing students from graduating

Female students who continue to wear the covering will not be allowed to graduate.

Indonesian University bans burqa-wearing students from graduating.

Independent reports that the head of the State Islamic University (UIN) in Yogyakarta city, Yudian Wahyudi, says the policy is to prevent radicalization on campus.

He explains: “Female students wearing the burqa, and radical groups, they are disturbing the teaching process.

“We are putting moderate Islam forward,” as a “preventive action to save the students”.

However, he added that the institution is not against regular headscarves that do not cover the face.

Reactions to Univerity’s Burqa Ban

This new policy has been severely criticised by some groups.

A women’s rights activist named Lathiefah Widuri Retyaningtyas said, “Using full-face veils is a choice and we cannot interfere with their choice and their freedom.”

In a statement, the Islamic Defenders Front said the policy “did not make sense.”

This new policy affects 41 students. UIN says they will be offered counseling sessions before ultimately being asked to remove the veil.

Nigerian women speak on rape and sexual abuse

It would have been appropriate to first give statistics of rape cases in Nigeria but that would be far-fetched – even economic policies are drafted without correct statistics.

What is certain, however, is that Nigerian women and children get sexually assaulted nearly on daily basis and they dared not speak out for fear of stigmatization and prejudice.

ALSO READ: Centre records 66 sexual assault cases

All that is changing now, as more Nigerian women and other victims across the world are speaking out, boldly.

According to a national survey carried out in 2014 (which is believed to be underestimated), one in four girls experience sexual violence before the age of 18.

The survey reported that of those who experienced sexual violence in childhood, only 38% told someone about it – and as few as 5% sought help.

The #Metoo movement, a viral hashtag used on social media to help demonstrate the widespread prevalence of sexual assault and harassment of women, has played a major role in the 'speaking out' development.

In Nigeria, where many victims suffer in silence, these women are using the opportunity to tell their horror stories.

Read one account below:

Chichi Ogbonnaya was defiled at 10 years old by an 'uncle'.

"This man was respected in our church and I called him 'uncle,'" she said.

Ogbonnaya was sent to live with the man by her mother, who could not afford to take care of her.

"He made me lie on top of him while his wife was away. He tried to penetrate me but when he could not, he went to get something that looked like a lubricant," she recalled the first incident with the man.

"He told me to stay calm and be quiet. I didn't know what was happening," Ogbonnaya said.

Ogbonnaya told CNN she remembers him handing her "the blood-soaked sheet to wash before his wife returned."

The abuse continued for five years until she was 15.

She is also speaking out about the assaults for the first time.

Ogbonnaya said the man even forced her to have an abortion, which was badly done, and this made her bleed alone in her bedroom.

"Even after I left the house, the act still continued and I just felt it was too late. I was too exposed to a whole lot of things … I didn't have that sort of relationship with my mum to start telling her this happened to me," she said.

She now works as a program manager for Women at Risk International Foundation, a rape crisis center.

Politics: Trump doubles down on executing drug dealers

donald trump

President Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his call to give drug dealers the death penalty in an effort to solve the opioid crisis.

  • President Donald Trump in a speech on Saturday called for executing drug dealers, praising other countries that adopt the practice.
  • Trump said he recently spoke with leaders in China and Singapore, who told him they'd eliminated their drug problems by giving dealers the death penalty.
  • It's not the first time Trump has raised the issue — he mentioned it earlier this month in a White House summit on opioid addiction.

President Donald Trump on Saturday repeated his call to give drug dealers the death penalty in an effort to solve the opioid crisis.

Trump gave a speech in Pennsylvania, stumping for GOP special election candidate Rick Saccone, but spent much of the time railing against various Democrats, members of the media, and countries the US trades with.

But late in the speech, Trump grew impassioned when he began discussing the opioid epidemic, and said he'd recently asked leaders in China and Singapore about their problems with drugs and addiction.

He said both countries had eliminated the problem by imposing the death penalty on dealers, though he noted that he wasn't certain about American public opinion on the policy.

He added that he'd asked Singaporean leaders about their "zero tolerance policy" toward drug dealers.

"What does that mean?" Trump said. "'That means if we catch a drug dealer, death penalty.'"

He continued: "I think it's a discussion we have to start thinking about. I don't know if we're ready — I don't know if this country's ready for it."

He also said he knew of a number of "blue-ribbon committees" in which people endlessly discuss the opioid epidemic but fail to solve it.

"These people are killing our kids and they're killing our families, and we have to do something," he said. "We can't just keep setting up blue-ribbon committees with your wife and your wife and your husband, and they meet and they have a meal and they talk, talk talk talk, two hours later, then they write a report."

It's not the first time Trump has floated the idea. He brought it up earlier in March during a White House summit on opioid addiction, arguing that other countries had rid themselves of their drug problems by imposing tough penalties.

"If you shoot one person, you get life in prison," Trump said, The Washington Post reported. "These people kill 1,000, 2,000 people, and nothing happens to them."

Sports: A double-amputee Navy SEAL platoon commander won a gold medal at the Winter Paralympics

  • Dan Cnossen, a Navy Seal with a purple heart and a bronze star, won the 7.5 km seated biathlon at the Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang.

Dan Cnossen is a Navy SEAL platoon commander with a purple heart and a bronze star. Now he is also a gold medalist.

Cnossen won gold at the Pyeongchang Winter Paralympics in 7.5 km seated biathlon.

Biathlon is the seemingly unusual event that combines cross-country skiing and target shooting (there is actually a logical explanation for the combination). Now add a huge degree of difficulty of athletes having to do the entire event with just arm strength and even having to navigate the transition from seated skiing to laying down — and back — for the shooting portion.

Cnossen successfully hit nine of his ten targets and when he crossed the finish line he had a 9.3 second lead. At the time, his finish was still up in the air due to the staggered starts for the skiers. He even seemed unaware of his strong performance.

"A guy who was taking the transponder off was saying, ‘I think an American is in at first,’ and I was like, ‘Maybe that’s me,'" Cnossen told NBC.

Dzmitry Loban of Belarus, who started after Cnossen, still had a shot to catch the American, but crossed the finish line 7.3 seconds behind to take silver.

Here is the moment Cnossen crossed the finish line to take the lead.

Cnossen was a platoon commander for SEAL Team One in 2009 when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan and lost both of his legs just above the knees. The 37-year-old was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star with Valor for his service.

This is Cnossen's second Winter Paralympics, having participated in five events in Sochi in 2014. His previous best finish in any Paralympic event was fifth and he finished 14th in this event in Sochi.

Politics: Mexico's surging narco violence is intensifying at the edges of one of its biggest tourist hotspots

Municipal police stand guard on the beach in front of the Blue Parrot club, a day after a deadly early-morning shooting there, in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, January 17, 2017.

Two recent high-profile incidents in Mexico's Mayan Riviera prompted warnings from the US government, but more sinister trends have been brewing for some time.

  • High-profile incidents in Playa del Carmen in recent weeks have prompted new travel warnings from the US government.
  • The incidents come amid spiraling violence on the peripheries of one of Mexico's most popular tourist areas.
  • Criminal groups in the area thrive on tourist traffic — and corruption, weak institutions, and social conditions have facilitated their activity.

The calm in Playa del Carmen was shattered on February 21, when a blast erupted from the side of a ferry, injuring more than 20 people.

That was followed by the March 2 discovery of explosives on a ferry off the island of Cozumel, another tourist hub in the state of Quintana Roo.

The March incident led to a US Embassy alert for the area. This week, after getting information about "a security threat" in the area, the embassy barred US government workers from travel to Playa del Carmen.

The ferries are owned by the same company — run by the father of a former governor who is currently jailed on corruption charges — and while the second ferry was out of service and moored hundreds of yards from Cozumel, Mexican authorities suspended the company's license while they investigate.

The origins of the explosives and the motive behind them remains unclear. While the involvement of organized crime doesn't appear to be ruled out, the state's attorney general said no group had been identified as having a role.

But crime around tourist hotspots in Quintana Roo has been rising for some time, driving concern that the narco violence plaguing much of Mexico over the past decade is intensifying in one of the country's most popular areas.

The state saw a decline from 232 homicide victims in 2015 to 165 in 2016. But 2017 saw a 118% increase, to 359 homicide victims, according to data from the federal government. The state's homicide rate rose from 10.19 homicides per 100,000 people in 2016 to 21.57 in 2017, just above the national average. The spike overwhelmed state forensic officials, who sent unidentified cadavers to a mass grave to reduce crowding in its morgue.

In Benito Juarez and Solidaridad municipalities, home to Cancun and Playa del Carmen, respectively, a similar trend has emerged.

In 2015, Benito Juarez had 132 homicide cases, which can contain more than one victim. (Forensic officials said there 227 organized-crime-related killings in Benito Juarez last year.) That fell to 86 in 2016, but rose to 250 in 2017. In Solidaridad, there were 20 homicides cases in 2015, 26 in 2016, and 49 in 2017.

Other crime statistics point to growing insecurity.

In Benito Juarez, there were 1,955 robberies of businesses in 2017 — more than triple the number in 2016 and a 54% increase over the total in 2015.

In Solidaridad, the 377 robberies of businesses in 2017 were more than twice the 2016 total and over one-third more than reported in 2015.

2017 had a violent start, with a mid-January shooting at a Playa del Carmen nightclub leaving several people dead, followed hours later by a deadly attack on a state prosecutor's office in Cancun.

Disputes between criminal groups over territory, drug sales, and extortion rackets were the principal causes of the violence, according to a report seen by El Universal early last year.

The major players, according to the report, were the Zetas cartel and an independent group, known as the Cartel de Cancun, led by Leticia Rodriguez Lera, a former federal-police officer. (The Gulf cartel and the ascendant Jalisco New Generation cartel are also present in the state.)

The Cartel de Cancun was reportedly made up of several former judicial officials and ex-members of other criminal groups, like the Zetas and the Gulf cartel.

Her group, which infiltrated police forces and the state prosecutor's office, controlled drug trafficking and other criminal activities in northern Quintana Roo and was looking to expand to Playa del Carmen. But the group had been stymied by leadership changes in the prosecutor's office, which the Zetas were taking advantage of to regain lost territory, the report said.

She was captured in August in Puebla, in central Mexico. Federal police attributed a wave of violence in northern Quintana Roo to her arrest. "There has been an imbalance in organized crime," the federal police commissioner said last year. "The cartels have been accommodating."

That same month, the US listed Quintana Roo and Baja California Sur, home to the Los Cabos resort area, on a travel warning for the first time — as did other governments, including Canada, France, and the UK.

"The presence of such crime is due to the selling of drugs. It's not on a grand scale, but it is still quite prominent," Quintana Roo state prosecutor Miguel Angel Pech Cen told PBS late last year. "There are groups fighting over having power to sell drugs here."

"Since tourists are the consumers, this also creates havoc," he added. "The drug lords immediately recognize them as revenue generators."

Quintana Roo state security chief Rodolfo del Angel Campos said in December that additional police units were dispatched to areas where crime was elevated, including tourist spots in Playa del Carmen and Cancun. In late February, he said security forces increased inspection and surveillance efforts to prevent the arrival of more criminal groups from other parts of the country — movement known as "the cockroach effect" — and that members of the military, federal police, and municipal police were coordinating to address insecurity.

"Organized criminal groups are present in Cancun, and they cause a lot of violence. It's extremely important to protect the tourists, but we care about everyone's safety," the Benito Juarez police chief told CGTN America in February.

Nevertheless, vigilantes have appeared, condemning state authorities and calling for a crackdown on criminals.

Tourists arrivals have continued, however, rising 9% in 2017. Visitors told CGTN America and PBS they never felt unsafe during their trips. But locals outside tourist areas said there was no respite from crime and corruption.

"Cancun has become a focal point for narco-trafficking, and all the violence that comes with it," activist leader David Sanchez Reyes told TRT World in summer 2017. "Murders have been a daily occurrence in the past six months, and if you walk around … you will see many shops are shut due to the extortion of the gangsters."

Extortion reports dropped between 2015 and 2016 but rose slightly in 2017. But "almost no one reports" extortion or extortion attempts, security analyst Alejandro Hope wrote in December 2016. And the burden of those payments forced some 100 businesses in Playa del Carmen to close in 2016, according to Hope.

"We've been robbed with pistols and with other larger guns, but they never catch them. Everyone here gets robbed, because there's no security presence in Cancun," Laura, an employee at a pharmacy outside of Cancun's hotel zone, told CGTN America.

A former Cancun police officer told PBS that police in the city were compromised and that criminals and police leadership often worked together.

"We see homicides every day on the street, in broad daylight, kidnapping, assaults … This didn’t happen before," he said. "The boss in charge of the operation will tell you directly to let someone go and ignore all evidence."

"The police officers who don’t respond to the criminals' demands are laid off," he added. "The police make a deal with the criminals that ensures disobedient officers will be fired."

Insecurity is likely exacerbated by social conditions.

Quintana Roo has a large concentration of young men with dim economic prospects and has seen large population growth — 5.9% in the 1990s and 4.1% in the 2000s, the highest growth rates in Mexico during those periods — and disordered urban expansion, Hope noted in early 2017.

Alejandro Schtulmann, a security analyst in Mexico, told PBS that the pace of tourism would probably continue, as violence remains below levels elsewhere in Mexico and is largely outside tourist areas. But that violence looks unlikely to abate.

Days after the explosives were discovered on the ferry near Cozumel, gunmen burst into a private hospital in Cancun, killing a patient, who was believed to be a local boss for the Gulf cartel, and his female companion.

The state security secretary, Rodolfo del Angel Campos, called the attack "a possible settling of accounts by members of organized crime."

Thanks to her lover's sperm, a woman named Angela Nwosu has dealt with a disturbing pimple problem by applying semen to her face.

She shared proof of this in a Facebook post on Thursday, March 8, 2018.

Nwosu who declined to go into details concerning how she acquired substance however provided tips on how the facial solution worked for her.

"I used SPERM for pimple treatment, and am slightly disgusted to report that it actually worked.

"Yes ladies! your man can indeed help you to have golden glowing face. It may sound weird but trust me when I say it works and it’s the best.

"Sperm is good for skin care. Proteins and other nutrients rich in sperm can help for a flawless facial treatment.

"My mother always told me, 'You don't need a man to be beautiful,' but that belief was dangerously threatened recently.

"I won't go into the details (trust me, it was more awkward than sexy), but whether it was a lack of communication or an accident, I ended up covered in sperm — and I was pretty pissed off about it.

"Then, I remembered my research and snagged some of the sperm we were both covered in to put on the pimples on my face," writes Nwosu.

Followers who found her post hilarious joined in the conversation with more funny comments.

No fewer than 271 people were on Saturday screened free for the various kidney-related diseases, Dr Adanze Anunobi, the Consultant Paediatric Nephrologist at the University College Hospital (UCH), said in Ibadan.

Anunobi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the people were screened for various health challenges such as hypertension, diabetes, high blood pressure and sugar and salt level  intake.

Of this number, 10 were discovered to have developed diabetes and they have been referred to our unit at the Akinkugbe Renal Centre in UCH for further supervision and monitoring.

“Mostly affected people were pregnant women and old people,’’ he said.

NAN reports that the screening was organised for market men and women at the popular Bodija Market in the metropolis as part of activities marking the 2018 World Kidney Day.

The screening was conducted by the Department of Nephrology at UCH in collaboration with some private companies.

According to Anunobi, the exercise is to create awareness on causes of kidney diseases and treatment.

She said:“In compliance with the 2018 World Kidney Day marked on March 8, we decided to embark on a health outreach to Bodija Market to sensitise the public on how to take care of  their kidney.

“Chronic diseases have scaled to the eighth leading causes of death in the world today.

“Treatment for kidney failure, including its diagnosis, is quite expensive and the mortality rate is still high in Nigeria.

“We are focusing more on its prevention by directing energy towards how to have a healthy kidney from infants to adults.

“By doing this, we are encouraging prevention which is cheaper and better than its cure.’’

Politics: A gunman took 3 hostages in an 'active shooter situation' at a California veterans' home, authorities say

california veterans home

An armed man took three hostages in an "active shooter situation" at a veterans' home in Napa Valley, California, fire officials told the Associated Press.

  • An armed man took three hostages at a veterans' home in northern California, officials said.
  • The gunman and the hostages are currently inside a room in one of the buildings, and hostage negotiators haven't yet made contact.
  • The Veterans Home of California-Yountville is on lockdown and the incident is being treated as an "active shooter situation."
  • Authorities said no injuries have been reported, though the condition of the hostages is unclear.

A gunman entered a Northern California veterans' home on Friday, exchanged fire with a sheriff's deputy, and took three people hostage, state authorities said.

The suspect, armed with a rifle, has kept the hostages detained in a room at the Veterans Home of California-Yountville for roughly four hours so far, and negotiators from multiple law-enforcement agencies have been unable to make contact.

The husband of one of the workers at the home told the Associated Press that the gunman took the hostages after he slipped into a party held in the building, detained certain people, and allowed others to leave.

Assistant chief Chris Childs of the California Highway Patrol's Golden Gate Division told reporters Friday afternoon that despite the earlier gunfire, no injuries have been reported so far. The condition of the hostages is unclear, he added.

Childs said the situation is "ongoing, active, and dynamic," but that there's no public safety threat outside the room where the gunman is holding the hostages.

He declined to identify the gunman or clarify his connection to the veterans' home, but local media outlets have reported that he's a veteran and former member of The Pathway Home program, which says on its website that it helps veterans "cope with the effects of their deployment."

The suspect was believed to be 36 years old and was discharged from the treatment program two weeks ago, according to The Napa Valley Register. The gunman was asked to leave the program after he broke certain rules, NBC Bay Area reported.

The initial reports of an active shooter at the Veterans Home of California-Yountville came in around 10:30 a.m., local time, a spokeswoman for the department told the San Francisco Chronicle. Residents were directed to shelter in place, she added.

"The safety of our residents, workers and the community is our top priority," the department said on Twitter. "We have activated our emergency response protocol and are cooperating with law enforcement."

Authorities have set up a hotline at (707) 948-3331 for people to call for information if their loved ones work at the veterans' home.

The facility is the largest veterans' home in the US, housing roughly 1,000 elderly or disabled veterans and their spouses, according to its website.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
