Samuel Ortom: I am ready to die for the people of Benue – Governor

I am ready to die for the people of Benue - Samuel Ortom

Governor Samuel Ortom said this while answering questions during an interview

Governor Samuel Ortom has said that he is willing to die for the people of Benue state.

Ortom said this while answering questions during an interview with Premium Times.

The Benue Governor revealed that his problem started when he passed the anti-grazing bill into law.

He also explained in the interview, what led to his defection to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Read excerpts of Governor Ortom’s interview with Premium Times below:

Do you mean that all the problems you’ve had so far originated from the passage of the grazing law?

It is, according to them, a result of the impunity from Miyetti Allah. We have called for their arrest and nobody arrested them up till today.

That is a problem. With all the provocative utterances they have given inciting the people, including claiming to have been responsible for the killing that has been taking place, giving reasons that their cattle were rustled and all that.

They can’t be killing innocent people. How can a four-year-old go to rustle cattle? How can a 75-year-old man go to rustle cattle?

How can a pregnant woman who is about to deliver go to rustle cattle? You’ll come and kill them. We are against any criminal. We are not supporting any criminal in the state.

If you want attack them and kill them I have no business with that. But when you come to kill innocent people, that is the point and the main reason why this problem has persisted is as a result of the impunity that has been going on.

These people are not apprehended and as I keep saying in any given society the rule of law must be observed, we must respect it, we must observe the rule.

It is the law that regulates the activities of human beings. If anybody decides to take the law into their hands then we cannot live together in that society.

I am aware you visited the president a number of times. At what point did you become so frustrated and helpless that you had to start thinking about exiting the party that brought you to power?

tom: Well, we have discussed several times. But the issue of exiting the party that brought me to power is as a result of non-integration properly into the party’s system.

As you are aware, I was a member of PDP until the dying minute when I was frustrated out of PDP so I was looking for another platform and of course APC invited me and felt that due to my popularity, they were sure if we teamed up together we could make it and I also bought into it.

We went there, but the leadership did not allow room for integration and so that has been the point. It is like here in Benue State, because all politics is local, the senator who said he is the leader of the party took control and doesn’t want input from outside.

So my supporters and myself were left out and when we tried to insist that look we have to be integrated, I was given a red card. That I am not needed, and everywhere he went, he demonized me, saying all kinds of things.

As governor how come it was difficult for you to take control?

You see, I told you I came in when structures of the party were alreadly in place. I had no hold on that. I came in like that so the same people were there.

I had wanted a process where we can integrate and make sure that we were all stakeholders. That was rebuked and I reported it but the thing continued.

I said well I cannot continue in this manner. There were always major disagreements. When we were talking about prohibition of open grazing he (Senator Akume) was against it.

He said the people in Abuja are too powerful. That they are too powerful and that if I don’t rescind that decision to sign the law the people from Abuja would move against me

He said that?

Yes he told me that and I said no there is no way I can do this. I am representing the Benue people and so if I betray the trust that they had in me by electing me governor by not doing their bidding, by becoming afraid somewhere, I mean that is not leadership.

As a leader let me do what I believe to be right. Even if I die, let it be on record that Ortom was killed because of his people. I have chosen to stay with the people and to walk with them.

If they crucify me today, if anything happens to me today, everyone will know that it is because I have chosen to stay with the people.

So like Jesus Christ you are ready to lay down your life for your people?

Of course I have said it. What else will I do? Whichever way you do one day you will die. But if you die for a just cause, it is okay. Jesus died so many years ago for a just cause but he’s a hero. Just like Abiola was recently recognised as a winner of June 12 in Nigeria.

That is what I am saying because all these cattle that we are talking about here in Nigeria that are creating so much panic and problems and killings and destruction and all that are not a lot. We are talking about just 20 million cattle. In India, there over 270 million cattle but they ranch. In Brazil, there are over 300 million but they ranch their cattle.

You don’t see them moving about the way you see it in Nigeria. In America, there are over 100 million cattle but they are surviving. In fact go to the states of America you don’t see any cattle. It is only here that even at the airport and offices you see cattle.

Even in Kenya, you don’t see cattle moving the way they do here. So ranching is global best practice in animal husbandry. So trying to set a pace by doing something new is a difficult task. One day people will understand.

Governor Samuel Ortom recently slammed the Federal Government for allegedly refusing to arrest the leaders of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) despite their un-guarded utterances.

Samuel Ortom: I am ready to die for the people of Benue – Governor

Van Gogh Was Murdered Claims New Film At Venice

A new film about the artist Vincent Van Gogh claims that he was murdered rather than having shot himself.

“At Eternity’s Gate” starring Willem Dafoe as the tortured genius, was premiered Monday at the Venice film festival.

In it the painter is shot after a struggle with local youths near the village of Auvers-sur-Oise outside Paris, where the artist spent his final months in 1890.

He died 36 hours later after staggering back to the local inn in the dark.

While most historians agree that Van Gogh killed himself, renowned painter and Oscar-nominated director Julian Schnabel fuels a theory that he was killed in the film.

A self-portrait by Vincent Van Gogh, displayed at the Orsay Museum in Paris. PHOTO: AFP

Legendary French screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere — who co-wrote the script with Schnabel — told AFP there “is absolutely no proof he killed himself. Do I believe that Van Gogh killed himself? Absolutely not!”

“He came back to the auberge with a bullet in his stomach and nobody ever found the gun or his painting materials,” Carriere added.

“What we have been fighting against is the dark romantic legend of Van Gogh. In the last period of his life Van Gogh was working constantly. Every day he made a new work,” he said.

His final weeks, when he painted the “Portrait of Dr Gachet” — which set a world record when it sold for $82.5 million (77 million euros) in 1990 — were “not at all sad”, the writer argued.

Schnabel insisted that a man who had painted 75 canvasses in his 80 days at Auvers-sur-Oise was unlikely to be suicidal.

The theory that Van Gogh did not commit suicide was first raised in a 2011 biography of the painter by Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith.

Schnabel said neither the gun nor “the painting material he had that day were ever found. It is strange to bury your shit if you are committing suicide.”

“At Eternity’s Gate” is also likely to open a new front in the row over Van Gogh’s “lost” sketchbook, which purportedly resurfaced after 126 years in 2016 and was authenticated by two eminent art historians last year.

Veteran British expert Ronald Pickvance claimed the book was “the most revolutionary discovery in the history of Van Gogh” studies.

But the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam hotly disputes its provenance and dismissed the drawings as fakes.

The book, originally a ledger from the Cafe de la Gare in Arles where Van Gogh stayed at various times between 1888 and 1890, features prominently in the film.

Schnabel and his team examined the drawings for themselves with the director pressing Dafoe’s hand down into them, he told AFP, to “force a transmission — a connection between me and Van Gogh.”

It clearly worked, with Defoe, who looks uncannily like the Van Gogh the film, already tipped for the best actor prize at Venice.

– ‘All history is a lie’ –
The actor said in shooting the film in the fields around Arles where the artist painted and in the asylum at Saint-Remy where he was held, “we flirted with Van Gogh’s ghost”.

Schnabel said the film was not meant to be a factual biopic, because “all history is a lie”.

“I don’t care if the notebook is real or not real, if he killed himself or didn’t kill himself. It’s irrelevant. But in the film it is nice to know there is another set of possibilities…”

The film was also a chance for “me to say things about painting… and it was a lot of fun to speak through Von Gogh.”

The ebullient New Yorker also wanted to correct the “bad wrap” that Van Gogh’s friend Paul Gauguin gets from history.

Van Gogh may have cut off his ear when the painter announced he was leaving him to return to Paris, but “Gauguin really cared about him,” Schnabel said.

“He is portrayed usually as an arsehole. Anthony Quinn (in the 1957 film “Lust for Life”) played him like that, but he wasn’t.”

Ronaldo, Salah and Modric nominated for FIFA best player award

Lionel Messi was left off the shortlist for the FIFA’s men’s player of the year award on Monday as his old rival Cristiano Ronaldo was named alongside Luka Modric and Mohamed Salah.

Messi has dominated the award along with Ronaldo over the past decade, but the Barcelona star has been omitted from the list of contenders after featuring in the top three for 11 straight years.

The 31-year-old Argentine was runner-up for the prestigious prize in 2007 and 2008 before winning it for the first of five successive years in 2009.

Messi and Ronaldo, the world’s two best players, have been engaged in a fascinating duel for the sport’s top individual and club honours for over a decade.

Now Messi’s absence from the shortlist opens the way for Ronaldo, also a five-time winner of the award, to move ahead in their personal battle.

Portugal forward Ronaldo lifted a fourth Champions League title in five years in May before joining Italian champions Juventus in July.

The 33-year-old won the player of the year crown in 2008, 2013, 2014, 2016 and 2017.

Joining Ronaldo on the shortlist is his former Real team-mate Modric, who enjoyed a superb season for club and country.

As well as his influential displays in Real’s Champions League triumph, the Croatia midfielder was the key man for his country as they reached their first World Cup final, finishing as runners-up to France.

Liverpool and Egypt forward Salah has also impeccable credentials as a potential winner of the award.

Salah enjoyed a record-breaking first season with Liverpool as his goals propelled Jurgen Klopp’s side to the Champions League final and set a host of individual club landmarks.

France’s World Cup-winning manager Didier Deschamps, Zlatko Dalic and Zinedine Zidane were nominated as the finalists for FIFA’s coach of the year award.

Deschamps became just the third man to win the World Cup as a player and coach with victory over Dalic’s Croatia in Russia while Zidane led Real Madrid to a third consecutive Champions League win in May before suddenly stepping down.

The best goalkeeper prize is to be contested by Tottenham and France’s Hugo Lloris, Denmark and Leicester’s Kasper Schmeichel and Belgium and Real goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

The 10 nominees for the Puskas Award for best goal include Real forward Gareth Bale’s stunning overhead kick in the Champions League final against Liverpool and Ronaldo’s superb bicycle kick against Juventus, scored while he was still with Real.

Norway and Lyon’s Ada Hegerberg, Dzsenifer Marozsan of Germany and Lyon, and five-time winner Marta, of Brazil and Orlando Pride, have been shortlisted for the women’s prize.

Delta Church Collapse: Gov Okowa to pay medical bills of victims

10-year-old drummer crushed to death as Church collapses in Delta

The Delta state government would undertake the medical treatment of victims of the church building collapse.

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has said the Delta State Government will undertake the medical treatment of the victims of the St. Paul Catholic Church building collapse.

The about 100-year-old church building located at Ugolo, Adagbrasa in Okpe local government area of the Delta state caved in during service on Sunday, September 2, 2018.

An 11-year-old drummer was reported dead.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Charles Aniagwu, Governor Okowa has directed that adequate medical attention must be given to the survivors of the unfortunate building collapse.

According to the preliminary report by the Commissioner for Works, James Augoye, one person died from the incident, eleven were rushed to the hospital out of which seven have been treated and discharged while the remaining four were still undergoing treatment and were in stable conditions.

"The church is a 100 years old church building and in an attempt to rebuild and expand the church, the old church building collapsed as a result of heavily soaked waters occasioned by the weight of worshippers who leaned against the walls while the early morning mass was on," Augoye said.

"While we pledge to pay the cost of treatment for the injured, people must ensure they seek necessary approvals before construction of buildings particularly public structures to avoid incidences such as this." he added.

Senate President Bukola Saraki had earlier condoled with the Catholic Church and the State Government over the incident.

Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has also commiserated with the people of the state over the loss.

Salah, Modric, Ronaldo Make Final Shortlist For 2018 FIFA Best Player Award; Messi Missing

World football governing body FIFA has announced its top 3 finalists who will contend for the 2018 FIFA best player award.

In an announcement made on Monday, Portuguese captain and Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo, Croatia’s captain and Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric and lastly Egypt and Liverpool FC forward Mohamed Salah were named as finalists for the award.

Perhaps not surprising was the exclusion of Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi, a five-time Ballon d’Or winner, who missed out on a place in the top three.

There was also no place for any member of France’s World Cup winning squad.

Lyon’s Champions League winning duo Ada Hegerberg of Norway and Germany’s Dzsenifer Marozsan are the finalists for Best Fifa Women’s Player, alongside Brazil forward Marta.

Ronaldo, 33, has 5 Ballon d’Or titles to his name and will be looking to earn his 6th overall and 3rd consecutive title. The 2016 and 2017 winner, won a fifth Champions League title with Real Madrid in May before joining Juventus for £99.2m.

A strong contender for the award this time is Real midfielder Luka Modric who was named the World Cup 2018’s player of the tournament as Croatia reached the final against France. Last week, Modric beat Ronaldo and Mo Salah to win the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.

Egyptian forward Salah scored 44 goals as Liverpool reached the Champions League final, losing to Real. He, however, failed to shine as expected at the FIFA world cup following a horrific shoulder injury which he suffered during the finals of the UEFA champions league finals against Real Madrid. He managed to score just one goal in the tournament as he missed most of the group game following his recovery.
