Independence Day: Katsina Gov., Masari, begs Nigerians to give Buhari another chance

Katsina Governor explains how he dealt with killer herdsmen

Masari made the call on Monday in Katsina in his 58th Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Alhaji Abdu Labaran.

Gov Aminu Masari of Katsina State has called on Nigerians to re-elect President Muhammadu Buhari in 2019 to consolidate on the foundation he laid to place Nigeria on the path of total recovery and development.

Masari made the call on Monday in Katsina in his 58th Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary, through his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Alhaji Abdu Labaran.

“Nigerians should close ranks and re-elect Buhari in 2019 for him to consolidate on his achievements, evidenced in so many meaningful interventions across the country.“

Buhari has laid the solid foundation to place Nigeria on the path of total recovery and development.

“His sterling performances had shamed and proved the doubters wrong that Nigeria can make a progress, he said.

The governor said those opposing President Buhari were only doing so because of what he described as “Buhari has exposed and stopped their rent collecting activities.

Masari, then urged Nigerians to always pray for the country and its leaders to enable it continue to prosper.

CAF endorses Infantino for second term, Nyamilandu elected into FIFA Council

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) yesterday endorsed FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, whose current tenure end in June next year, for a second term in office, reports cafonline.com.

At its 12th extraordinary general assembly yesterday in Egypt, CAF President, Ahmad Ahmad appealed to delegates to throw their weight behind Infantino for another term in office, adding, “I profoundly announce that CAF will support (Gianni) Infantino for another term.

Ahmad called on the president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), Fouzi Lekjaa, who doubles as CAF’s third vice president, to formalize the support.

“On behalf of my colleagues, I gladly announce that the delegates (present here) are in support of second mandate for FIFA President Gianni Infantino. You (Infantino) have shown great commitment to the activities and development of African football, and we would like to give you more time to further your reforms, Lekjaa declared to a resounding applause from fellow delegates.

Ahmad reiterated his quest to see African football develop into a model built on the tenets of democracy and transparency.

“CAF needs a new dimension to regain the values of Africa, he said whilst regretting the performance of African teams at the FIFA World Cup Russia 2018, where none of the five teams (Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal and Tunisia) made it past the group stage, the worst performance the continent’s representatives in decades.

He also called for support to Lydia Nsekera, FIFA Council member, who has declared her intentions to contest for the presidency of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA).

In his reply, an emotional FIFA President, Infantino said, “the support for another term means a lot to me, whilst pledging more support for the African confederation.

“Africa is the future. FIFA is committed to developing Africa’s passion for football via the FIFA Forward so the game can reach its potential in each African nation & everyone who wants to take part can do so without barriers.

“I’m happy and proud that CAF embraced VAR. It shows that CAF is in line with modern trends of football.

VAR did not change football; rather VAR has helped football and referees.

Another important item on the agenda of extraordinary general assembly was the election of African representative to the FIFA Council for the Anglophone Linguistic Group to replace Kwesi Nyantakyi (Ghana) who resigned last June.

Malawian Walter Nyamilandu got the nod after two rounds of voting.

‘Arsenal’s Ramsey holds power in contract talks’

“Like any player that’s run down his contract, that does put him in a position of power to negotiate what happens next.

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey holds the power in negotiations over a new contract, says Dominic Fifield, and he is still a player with quality.

Sky sources reported this week that talks between Ramsey and Arsenal over a new deal have broken down, with the Gunners potentially losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season.

But Fifield, the Guardian’s London football correspondent, believes the situation will only strengthen Ramsey’s position and he can still offer a lot to another club, should he move elsewhere.

When asked if Ramsey holds the power, he told The Sunday Supplement: “Yes he is, because if he resists being sold in January then he’ll command a higher wage at his next club. That’s the reality of it.

“I guess he might find his opportunities at Arsenal to play in the second half of the season, if he’s still there, more limited than he would like, but he’s still a player whose pedigree and quality is very obvious.

“He is a consistent performer in a team where people like Mesut Ozil aren’t consistent, so whoever brings him in knows what they are getting from him.

“Like any player that’s run down his contract, that does put him in a position of power to negotiate what happens next.

Arsenal find themselves involved in another saga surrounding player contracts, with Alexis Sanchez – who eventually moved to Manchester United – and Mesut Ozil under the spotlight last season.

The latter did extend his stay at the Emirates, but The Mail on Sunday’s chief football writer Rob Draper says Arsenal need to improve their process of negotiating new contracts.

“My reading of it is, if you stay out of the Champions League for two years, you have to make some hard choices, he added.

“Arsenal’s wage bill is pushed to its absolute max because they’ve signed up Mesut Ozil, they’ve signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Alexandre Lacazette was a record signing and that was all before the Unai Emery era so he has no wiggle room.

“If you are going to pay someone around £200,000 a week, you’ve got to be sure he’s your number two or three player. My guess is Emery probably doesn’t think that.

He’s a very good player who you’d want in your squad but they seem to have pre-empted the situation because they don’t want to get into the Sanchez or Ozil ‘will they or won’t they sign’ disaster of last January and said ‘actually we can’t go to that level’.
