Independence Day: PDP faults claims made by Buhari during his speech

PDP faults claims made by Buhari during his Independence Day speech

The PDP described the speech as a litany of false claims, empty assertions and bogus promises.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted claims made by President Buhari during his Independence Day speech.

According to Punch, the PDP described the speech as a litany of false claims, empty assertions and bogus promises.

Kola Ologbondiyan, the spokesman of the PDP said this in a statement which he issued to newsmen in Abuja.

He said “Perhaps Mr. President needs to be reminded that his new Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed had, last month, alerted that the nation was facing serious revenue challenges under him, while the Central Bank of Nigeria expressed fears that our country is sliding further into recession due to his poor implementation of the 2018 budget.

“In his false economic assertions, President Buhari deliberately failed to mention that his administration has returned our beloved country to a debtor nation by accumulating over N22.4 trillion debt through which he had mortgaged the future of our country.

“What the Buhari Presidency should note is that Nigerians are no longer swayed by the false performance claims of his administration. They have the facts and nobody can beguile them as was the case in 2015.

Nigeria @ 58: Buhari’s address full of false claims, empty assertions ― PDP

BuhariTHE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has dismissed the Independence Day Anniversary Speech by President Muhammadu Buhari as a litany of false claims, empty assertions and bogus promises.

In its response, the party asserted in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday by Kola Ologbondiyan, its National Publicity Secretary, that while the President was fictitiously asserting that the nation’s economy had made progress under him and that there is enabling environment for local and foreign investments, hard economic reality shows that not only has the nation become more economically disadvantaged under him, it now ranks as one of the world’s poorest.

It added: “Perhaps Mr President needs to be reminded that his new minister of Finance Zainab Ahmed had last month alerted that the nation was facing serious revenue challenges under him, while the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) expressed fears that our country is sliding further into recession due to his poor implementation of 2018 budget.

“In his false economic assertions, President Buhari deliberately failed to mention that his administration has returned our beloved country to a debtor nation by accumulating over N22.4 trillion debt through which he had mortgaged the future of our country.

“Mr President also failed to respond to the fact that his harsh economic policies and demarketing tendencies, has caused a dearth in local and foreign direct investment, leading to over 30 million job losses as detailed by independent surveys including those by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

“Similarly, Mr President failed to state that due to his incompetence, the naira has fallen from the N165/1USD he met in 2015 to N360 to 1USD. He had no words for the increase in the price of fuel from N87 in 2015 to N145 as well as the hike in the prices of staple foods and essential commodities in Nigeria under his misrule.

“Furthermore, President Buhari claimed that under his administration, corruption, including brazen theft of billions of naira and shady oil deals have become a thing of the past. Perhaps, Mr President forgot that the latest corruption perception index released by Transparency International (TI), which saw our nation moving 12 places down the red line, shows that corruption has increased under him.

“What the Buhari Presidency should note is that Nigerians are no longer swayed by the false performance claims of his administration. They have the facts and nobody can beguile them as was the case in 2015.

Lagos Governorship Primary: Buhari begs Tinubu, Akande to save Ambode

Buhari begs Tinubu, Akande to save Ambode

President Buhari held an emergency meeting with Tinubu as Governor Ambode's fate continues to hang in the balance ahead of the Lagos governorship primary.

President Muhammadu Buhari made a last ditch attempt to save Lagos Governor Akinwunmi Ambode from a looming embarrassment at the Lagos APC primary, by calling for an emergency meeting with godfather Bola Tinubu and former national Chairman of the APC Adebisi Akande.

Sources in the presidency tell Pulse that the meeting took place in the early hours of Monday, October 1, 2018.

“The president had to call for the meeting after Ambode’s press conference on Sunday. As leader of the party, he is worried about a possible implosion of the APC in Lagos and he was quite disturbed by some of Ambode’s allegations during his press conference, the source offered.

A fallout that has shaken the APC

Tinubu and Ambode are not the best of friends at the moment. Tiinubu has accused Ambode of deviating from the Lagos masterplan.

Tinubu is backing Babajide Sanwoolu, a former commissioner in Lagos, for the governorship seat of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

The APC godfather has handpicked his successors since his reign as Lagos Governor came to a close in 2007.

Ambode's angry press conference

During what turned out a nasty press briefing, Ambode dodged questions on his frosty relationship with Tinubu and labelled Tinubu’s anointed candidate, Sanwoolu, a recovering drug addict, a misfit for the office of governor and a phony who was arrested for splashing fake dollars at a night club in the United States.

Sanwoolu has denied all of the allegations.

The presidency source told Pulse that Buhari’s meeting with Akande and Tinubu dwelt extensively on the “Lagos primaries. Abuja is worried by the decision of Ambode to go dirty and to drag his party in the mud.

One APC chieftain in Lagos warned Abuja to steer clear of the primary process in Lagos and “allow Lagosians decide for themselves. After all, it’s a direct primary process and no one is stopping Ambode from contesting. Look how they keep shifting the Lagos APC primary because of Ambode. Let Ambode and everyone else be allowed to test their popularity at the poll.

A tale of postponements

The Lagos APC governorship primary election has been slated for Tuesday, October 2, after three previous postponements.

APC sources in Lagos disclose that the exercise is being postponed in the hope that Tinubu and Ambode can bury their differences and find a common ground before delegates take to Acme Road in Ogba to vote.

“That isn’t going to happen. Tinubu has told the presidency before that Ambode’s fate is now beyond him and that APC members in Lagos will be the ones to decide whether he gets a second term ticket or not, another top ranking APC chieftain in Lagos told Pulse.

Ambode's spokespersons have not been permitted to speak to the press since the crisis began and so couldn't be reached for this story.

Ambode: Pastor explains why God is punishing Lagos Gov and his wife

Pastor explains why God is punishing Ambode and his wife

Ambode’s second term ambition is not looking promising following a rift between him and his estranged mentor, Bola Tinubu.

The Founder of the Awaiting The Second Coming Of Jesus Christ in Akure, Ondo State, Pastor Adewale Giwa has said that God is taking out his wrath on Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and his wife, Bolanle Ambode.

Pastor Giwa said that God is angry with Ambode because he sacked the Chaplain of the Chapel of Christ the Light, Alausa, Ikeja, Venerable Femi Taiwo.

Ambode’s woes

The Lagos state Governor’s second term ambition is not looking promising following a rift between him and his estranged mentor, Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu has threatened to impeach Ambode if he does not step down for the APC anointed candidate, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Local government chairmen, House of Assembly members in the state and notable politicians have also thrown their weight behind Sanwo-Olu.

Why the Chaplain was sacked

According to Punch Metro, Taiwo was sacked on Monday, May 15, 2017, by the Governor for allegedly dis-respecting the Lagos state First lady, Bolanle Ambode.

The Lagos state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Steve Ayorinde however denied the report, saying that: “The former chaplain had been queried a number of times in the past for conducts unbecoming of his office. The culmination of various indiscretions led to the Governing Council of the church issuing yet another query that led to his being relieved of his post.

“This has got nothing to do with the First Lady. The Chaplain is looking for an excuse to cover his insouciance. It’s nothing but cheap blackmail.

A member who narrated how it happened said  “The church had declared seven-day fasting after we lost two prominent members.

“The Sunday service, which was declared as anointing service, was supposed to end the fasting.

“The First Lady, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, was present with her entourage. She comes to the church once in a while.

“When it was time to be anointed, the cleric asked people to come forward, adding that it was optional. Three people stood at the stage to anoint people. They included the chaplain, the presiding chaplain and one other person.

“People started stepping out one after another. The governor’s wife, after some time, also stepped out and was anointed.

Another source who spoke to Punch Metro added that “As she (Mrs. Ambode) stepped out, it was obvious that she was angry.

“The president of the women’s fellowship and the pastor’s wife ran after her. She shunned them, entered her car and zoomed off.

“When we came to the church on Tuesday, we heard that Venerable Taiwo had been sacked. We were told that he was sacked because the the governor’s wife didn’t get the anointing oil first and she felt disrespected.

Beg God for forgiveness

Speaking further, Pastor Giwa said God can never let a sinner go unpunished.

He said “God cannot let a sinner go unpunished. I will advise Governor Ambode and his wife to seek God for forgiveness.

“Their action to remove the person called a Man of God from office is uncalled for.

“From my findings, I was told that despite pleadings from church leaders and other reputable elders, Governor Ambode insisted the cleric must leave the church.

ALSO READ: Ambode's meltdown on international television was embarrassing

“Can you imagine that some church members reportedly contributed money to buy gas cooker and other household items for the family as they vacated the vicarage?

“Do power and recognition take you to heaven? This is what is happening virtually all over the churches today.

“The moment they see powerful persons in their midsts, they quickly give honour to them. In the case of Venerable Taiwo, he did not do that and got sacked.

According to Punch Metro, Mrs. Ambode’s office supervises the church, which is under the Lagos State Ministry of Home Affairs.
