Nigeria's state oil firm posts N18.12 billion trading surplus

The report indicated that the increase in performance was bolstered by the relatively high production volumes of 1.97 million barrels per day in April 2018.

Nigeria's state oil firm, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has announced a trading surplus of N18.12 billion for May 2018.

The surplus is higher than the N17.16 billion recorded in April.

Ndu Ughamadu, the firm's spokesperson, stated this in a statement on the May 2018 edition of the monthly NNPC Financial and Operations Reports, released in Abuja on Monday, October 1, 2018.

According to the statement, monthly trading surplus of N0.96 billion was mainly due to increased performance of some of the Corporation’s subsidiaries namely, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Nigerian Pipelines and Storage Company (NPSC) and Marine Logistics.

"During the period under review, the NNPC group performance was mainly impacted by NPDC’s activities, which recorded a favourable variance of N18.22 billion due to an increase in revenue with an attendant decline in expenses.

"This resulted in N20.93 billion net increase in the upstream gas and power surplus."

The report also indicated that the increase in performance was bolstered by the relatively high production volumes of 1.97 million barrels per day in April 2018, which was sold in May 2018 thereby reducing cost per unit.

The NNPC said it will continue to monitor petrol evacuation figures from depots across the nation and engaged, where necessary, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and other stakeholders through the existing Joint Monitoring Team.

Politics: Police report reveals Brett Kavanaugh allegedly threw ice during bloody bar fight

brett kavanaugh

Brett Kavanaugh allegedly threw ice or beer at a man that resembled a UB40 band member during his junior year at Yale University.

  • Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump nominee for the Supreme Court, allegedly threw ice on another person "for some unknown reason" at a bar during his junior year at Yale University, according to a New York Times report published Monday.
  • The man reportedly also had a glass thrown at him by Chris Dudley, a former Yale basketball player and a friend of Kavanaugh's, the report said. The glass hit the man in the right ear, causing him to bleed.
  • One of Kavanaugh's classmates claimed that following a UB40 concert, a group that included Kavanaugh went to a bar where they spotted a man who some in the group believed resembled a member of the band.

Brett Kavanaugh, President Donald Trump's nominee for the Supreme Court, allegedly threw ice on another person "for some unknown reason" at a bar during his junior year at Yale University.

A 21-year-old Dom Cozzolino accused the college-aged Kavanaugh of throwing ice on him in the September 1985 incident, which was recorded in a police report that was obtained by The New York Times.

Chris Dudley, a former Yale basketball player and a friend of Kavanaugh's, allegedly threw a glass at Cozzolino, according to a witness cited in the police report.

The glass hit the man in the right ear, causing him to bleed. He was treated at a hospital, The Times reported.

According to the police report, Kavanaugh was reluctant to say whether "he threw the ice or not." Dudley reportedly denied the allegations.

The report did not indicate whether any charges were filed and whether there were any arrests, according to The Times.

The incident was recounted by Chad Ludington, another classmate of Kavanaugh's who has been in contact with the FBI amid a supplemental background check on Kavanaugh following allegations of sexual misconduct by several women.

Ludington claimed that after a UB40 concert, a group that included Kavanaugh went to a bar where they spotted a man who some in the group believe resembled a member of the band.

The man Kavanaugh's group reportedly homed in on told the group to stop looking at him. According to The Times, Kavanaugh shot back and allegedly threw the beer "at the guy," Ludington told the newspaper.

"I don't know what Brett was doing in the melee, but there was blood, there was glass, there was beer and there was some shouting, and then the police showed up," Ludington added.

Ludington described the incident in a statement published by The Times on Sunday:

"On one of the last occasions I purposely socialized with Brett, I witnessed him respond to a semi-hostile remark, not by defusing the situation, but by throwing his beer in the man's face and starting a fight that ended with one of our mutual friends in jail."

On Monday evening, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders sought to downplay the incident and called The Times' report "ridiculous."

"Democrats desperately attack Judge Kavanaugh for throwing ice during college," Sanders said on Twitter. "What motivated New York Times reporter to write this ridiculous story? Throwing ice 33 years ago, or her opinion of Judge Kavanaugh in July?"

The bar fight report comes amid Kavanaugh's testimony in which he challenged claims that suggested he was a "sloppy drunk."

Kavanaugh also denied the sexual assault allegation from Christine Blasey Ford, a 51-year-old research psychologist who alleged that a "stumbling drunk" Kavanaugh pinned her to a bed and groped her at a house party when the two were in high school in the 1980s.

Unending struggle for new minimum wage

Chris Ngige. PHOTO: DailyPost

The contestation that has characterised the 2018 negotiation of a new national new minimum wage for the country is unprecedented. From the initial contact between labour and government in 2016, when the present wage floor was due for renegotiation to the declaration of the tripartite committee negotiation ‘sine die’ by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, that eventually snowballed into a national strike, the process has no doubt been a tedious one.Indeed, the poser is what factor (s) that influenced the Minister’s decision to unilaterally adjourned the negotiation indefinitely and on whose directive? Presidency perhaps.

But the intervention of the Chief of Staff to the President, Abba Kyari, gave an indication that the presidency may be unaware of the ‘suspension’ of the negotiation by the tripartite committee. In his meeting with the organised labour in Abuja, last Wednesday, two hours after the strike was declared, Dr Ngige explained that ‘sine die’ did not mean indefinite suspension of negotiation, but that no definite time was set for the resumption of the talks. He also added that the Federal Government had to consult the Economic Management Team for it to take decision based on current financial status of the country six months after negotiation began.

The carrot of resumption of negotiation this Thursday, October 4th was not enough to suspend the strike action, as labour saw that as ‘too little, too late’. The strike had been declared and there was no going back. They blamed the Federal Government, accusing it of insincerity of purpose or simply a case of crass incompetence.

Why did the negotiation break down to the point of suspending deliberations indefinitely? Why was fixing 4th October for resumption of the tripartite committee not enough for the organised labour to suspend the nationwide strike?Deputy President of NLC, Peters Adeyemi, justified the position of labour thus: “Let me tell you as a member of the committee that the committee already concluded its work. So, the reconvening of the meeting is contingent on the figure that would be made available by the Federal Government team. It is assumed that when the meeting is reconvened, those figures are ready. It is not about reconvening. Reconvening for what? The meeting can only be reconvened when the figures that are missing for the committee to conclude its assignment are made available. That is the figure the Federal Government said the Economic Management Team is yet to finalise. They are also saying that the Governor Forum is likely come with its own figures. Calling any meeting without those figures would only aggravate the anger of workers the more.

Adeyemi accused government of taking the organised labour for granted. He asked what government officials including the Minister of Labour and Employment, who is the co-chair of the committee had been doing since March this year when the committee began its work? Adeyemi, who was agitated as he spoke, said: “First, it took this government more than two years to name members of the committee, and many months to get the committee to begin its work. And now it is taking this government many months to make its figures available. Why are little things so difficult for this government to accomplish within the stipulated time? For us, all these show lack of coordination and seriousness to matters that affect the welfare of the working people, who are turning the wheels of production.

The organised labour is angst that in a country where the minimum wage is about $38, law makers earn as much as $65,000 while those in the executive arm earn fat allowances for even extra-curricular activities. In countries like Libya where minimum wage is $430 (N190, 000), lawmakers earn $3000, while in Luxemburg where minimum wage is $2,500; their lawmakers are paid $7,400.In the United States, a worker is paid $11 per hour, while workers earn $120 in Chad and in Cameroon; minimum wage is $75, which is equivalent to N38, 000.

From the nation’s capital Abuja to the commercial nerve centre Lagos to Kano and Port Harcourt, economic activities were paralysed as organised labour downed tools. At the Lagos State Secretariat, as early as 6a.m., labour unions had already barricaded the entrances that lead to the secretariat and that of the Governor’s office with their vehicles, chanting solidarity songs.

The enforcement team of the Association of Senior Staff of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions (ASSBIFI), led by its president, Oyinkan Olasanoye, prevented workers from gaining access to the Ikeja branch of the Stanbic IBTC Bank. The team also stormed Polaris Bank (former Skye Bank) on Awolowo Way, Ikeja, and locked the gate.

The labour officials said they wanted to ensure all Nigerian workers complied with the directives of the congress since the issue of a new national minimum wage affects every Nigerian worker.Speaking on behalf of the leadership of the organised labour, Vice President of NLC and National President of the National Union of Civil Engineering Construction, Furniture and Wood Workers (NUCECFWW), Amaechi Asugwuni said paralysing the nation’s activities was to enforce the position of the National Executive Council of all the organs of labour in the country.

He urged the Federal Government to immediately submit its own figures for the tripartite committee conclude its assignment. Asugwuni, said: “We would get to the end of the matter, which is for us to engage the government in struggle before they can release the national minimum wage for the past number of years. The last review of the minimum wage in Nigeria was in 2011, and by law it is supposed to be done every five years. That really tells you how patient we have been. But it appears government is taking us for a fool. That is why we have decided on the need to get down and lock down the economy of this nation if that is what it takes before government can get it right.

“It is so disheartening that the government that is the convener of the tripartite national committee where the negotiation is on-going, up to this moment has failed to come out with its figure. Whether they like it or not, they must bring a new figure. We don’t need the figure in public; we need the Federal Government to bring the figure to the table of the tripartite committee.”

Describing government as intransigence and insensitivity to the collective plight of the people, the president of United Labour Congress (ULC), Joe Ajaero, regretted that government was yet to neither “respond sensibly and positively to workers’ demands nor show any sign that suggests otherwise.Workers at the airport were not spared, as labour disrupted early flights as 7a.m. last Friday, which left many passengers stranded and unsettled flight operations. With the suspension of the strike, the onus falls on the Federal Government to get the Economic Management Team and Governors’ Forum get the figures ready between within two days – Tuesday and Wednesday – to prevent another round of labour impasse.

Still in search of a northern president

The monolithic North which came together under one roof and under one voice in 2015 to support the candidature of President Muhammad Buhari is today in disarray. The region is divided along several interests and opinions, making it extremely difficult to pick from the retinue of 15 northerners who have declared their interest to challenge President Buhari in next year’s election.

Among the presidential aspirants from the North-West are the current President, Muhammadu Buhari; former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Kwankwaso; former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal; former governor of Sokoto State, Dalhatu Bafarawa; former Minister of Special Duties, Kabir Tanimu, and Senator Datti Baba Ahmed; while in the North Central there are John Dara; Professor Jerry Gana; Senate President Bukola Saraki; former governor of Plateau State, David Jang; and Mattias Tsado, while in the North-East there are former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Governor Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo.

Buhari’s road to 2019

Jonathan’s failure to vacate the seat after completing Yar’adua’s tenure and after which he decided to run again against the northern interest was his greatest undoing. By 2015, it was clear that the region didn’t want anything to do with Jonathan. Buhari who had contested three times and failed became the beautiful bride of the region. Thus, he was subsequently adopted and supported by the northern oligarchs. With the support of other regions, he won the 2015 presidential election.

Now, three and half years on the saddle as president of the country, the region is divided over his re-election bid.

Investigations revealed that today the northern establishment is not in favour of his re-election bid even though there are some others who would want him to continue in office beyond 2019. Those who are rooting for his continued stay as the country’s number one citizen argue that the North has only four years to remain in power. They claim that Buhari ought to be supported and given the opportunity to complete all the projects he started. They further argue that if another candidate emerges, the country will again be plunged into another crisis like the one witnessed after the death of President Umaru  Yar’Adua.

Apart from that, the president’s scorecard in the fight against insurgency in the North-East and other parts of the country is also seen as one of the reasons he should be allowed to continue. According to them, allowing him to remain in office would lead to total victory against the insurgents since the war is almost coming to an end.

A member of the Borno Elders Forum, who pleaded for anonymity, remarked that “Before the president assumed office, the North-East was traumatised by war. Many had abandoned their homes and were living in IDP camps. But today the insurgency has been degraded to the barest minimum and many people have returned to their homes and have re-united with their families.

Also, speaking in the same vein, a public affairs commentator, Abdulnasir Umar, maintained that the era of bomb blasts in some major cities has become a thing of the past, saying places like markets, motor parks and schools which were becoming bomb sites are now very free as people move around without fear of being attacked by suicide bombers.

Those rooting for the return of Buhari remarked that he has equally done well in the fight against corruption. According to them, many people who had embezzled funds have either returned some of the looted funds or are currently facing litigations across the various courts in the country.

“We are now in the era where people are afraid to steal. The era of wanton stealing of public funds is over, the source declared.

They further argue that the anti-corruption fight has also been carried to the doors of top government officials found wanting while in office. They cited the dismissal of former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, as well former director-general of the DSS, Lawal Daura, as well as the recent resignation of the Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun, over the NYSC certificate scandal.

Odds against Buhari

On the other hand, those who want the president to return to his home town, Daura, believe that a young candidate is better to steer the ship of state.  Apart from his health challenges which they said remains a major factor, they also claim that Buhari’s government is being run by a cabal. They accused the president of paying lip service to the ongoing herdsmen/farmers’ crisis in some parts of the country, especially in the North-Central.

According to them, the unending killings in Zamfara, Benue, Plateau, Taraba, Kaduna states show clearly the failure of the government in power. The failure of the president to revive the economy is also seen as a major setback. Those opposed to him point to the increasing high cost of living and rising cases of unemployment as too glaring to ignore. With the value of naira still at N360 to a dollar, they maintain that it would be suicidal to continue to support Buhari. According to them, the president seems to have run out of ideas on how to tackle the myriad of problems confronting the country.

In a recent interview, Paul Unongo had told the Nigerian Tribune that because of the division in the region, the various interests and opinions being proffered by different people across the region, elders in the region met and decided to set up a six-man committee whose mandate is to pick a candidate that is acceptable in the region and equally acceptable in the other regions. Unongo had said the committee, which he is a member, would do a thorough job to ensure that the region presents the best for the country.

Six weeks into the working of the committee, investigation revealed that the committee could not reach a consensus. A member of the committee who pleaded for anonymity remarked that the members of the committee had failed to agree on whether to support Buhari or any other candidate.

According to him, while two members of the committee had agreed on Buhari, two had also lent their support to one of the candidates, while one is in favour of another candidate. One of the committee members, it was gathered, could not make up his mind.

It was also revealed that it was not clear whether the committee had met again. A source revealed that “the elders’ committee is divided. Right now, I don’t even know whether they have met again since the split.

Following the deadlock, the aspirants from the region have been tacitly given the nod to contest on their different party platforms. To this end, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will be fielding 11 presidential aspirants; the Social Democratic Party (SDP), two aspirants; the ARP, one presidential aspirant and the incumbent from the APC.

According to a reliable source who pleaded for anonymity, Atiku, Saraki, Makarfi and Kwankwanso appear to be leading in the build-up to the party’s convention in the first week of October.

He said “I assure you that anyone of them that emerges will slug it out with the incumbent and even defeat him.

However, the spokesman for the Buhari Campaign Organisation (BCO) in Kaduna, Mr Samuel Aruwan, contended that they are not losing sleep over this development. According to him, “you are living in the North; tell me who among them is more popular than the president?

The roles of traditional rulers as well as religious leaders according to pundits would be a major determining factor of who emerges as the next president.

Each of the political parties that can market its candidate to these two bodies will eventually produce the next president in 2019.

Atiku alleges elite conspiracy against his presidential ambition

Vows to privatise petroleum industry

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has alleged political elite conspiracy against his presidential ambition. He disclosed to journalists in Abuja on Sunday night that he had failed to become president since 2007 because the political elite were scared of his independent mindset. Atiku further said that the conspiracy had been successful because Nigerians were not politically sophisticated.

According to the Waziri Adamawa, it is unfortunate that the electorate rely on the political elite to dictate who should be elected or not.On what had made it difficult for him to become president so far, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential hopeful said: “It is what I call the conspiracy theory of the political elite. If you are not going to be used, if you are not going to satisfy their personal aspiration, they won’t allow you. They say I am independent, principled and so on. That is part of the problem they have with me.

Atiku promised to privatise the nation’s petroleum industry, if elected president in 2019.He told reporters: “The United States pumps more oil than Nigeria, yet they don’t have a Ministry of Petroleum Resources.

“If I have my way, I will hand over the entire thing to the private sector and I will get more money than what the government is getting.Nigeria’s Ministry of Petroleum Resources oversees the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), which is often criticised for its inefficiency and lack of transparency.NNPC manages joint ventures between the government and international oil companies including Royal Dutch Shell, Total and Chevron.

Politics: 'A farce': Trump adds to confusion surrounding FBI investigation as Democrats demand broader scope

Brett Kavanaugh

The Trump administration is being accused of limiting the scale and scope of an FBI investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

  • The Trump administration is being accused of limiting the scale and scope of an FBI investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
  • Three women have accused Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, but it's been reported FBI investigators are only pursuing information behind two of the allegations.
  • Trump on Monday said he wants a "comprehensive" but quick investigation, adding that he's OK with the FBI interviewing all three accusers.
  • Attorney Michael Avenatti, who represents the third accuser, told Business Insider that the investigation is a "farce" and is being run by Trump.

President Donald Trump on Monday sought to quell criticism over the White House's involvement in the FBI investigation into Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, as critics questioned whether it set limitations on the probe.

Senate Republicans and the White House on Friday agreed to an investigation lasting no longer than a week into sexual misconduct allegations, delaying a Senate floor vote. It came after dramatic, emotional testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last Thursday from Kavanaugh and one of his accusers, Christine Blasey Ford.

But confusion has erupted about the specifics of the FBI investigation, especially in terms of which allegations are being investigated and who's being questioned. Judiciary Committee Chairman Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley on Friday said the investigation will focus on "current credible allegations."

What we know about who's been contacted by the FBI

Kavanaugh is accused of sexual misconduct by three women: Ford, college classmate Deborah Ramirez, and Julie Swetnick, a client of the high-profile lawyer Michael Avenatti.

  • Ford alleges Kavanaugh attempted to force himself on her at a party when they were teenagers, at times covering her mouth with his hand to prevent her from screaming. She claims a friend of Kavanaugh's, Mark Judge, was in the room and aided in the alleged assault.
  • Ford had not been contacted for an interview by the FBI as of Sunday, according to The Washington Post. Her attorney, Debra Katz, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider on Monday.
  • Meanwhile, Ramirez, who alleges Kavanaugh shoved his penis in her face at a party when they were both college students at Yale University, reportedly spoke with the FBI on Sunday.
  • In a sworn declaration, Swetnick alleges Kavanaugh and Judge present at high-school parties at which gang rapes occurred. There are few signs the FBI is looking into Swetnick's allegations.

Judge's lawyer, Barbara Van Gelder, recently told Business Insider he does not recall the incident Ford described, but has also said he will cooperate with the FBI. Van Gelder on Monday reiterated Judge's willingness to cooperate but would not say whether he's been contacted by the FBI as of yet.

"Mr. Judge has said he will cooperate with the FBI and that is all we are going to say," Van Gelder told Business Insider via email. "As a former federal prosecutor, I respect the confidentiality of the FBI investigative process."

An ex-girlfriend of Judge's, Elizabeth Rasor, who has challenged his recollections, has offered to cooperate with the FBI but reportedly hasn't been contacted.

And Charles Ludington, a Yale classmate of Kavanaugh's who's challenged the Supreme Court nominee's statements on his drinking habits, told The Washington Post on Sunday he planned to deliver a statement to the FBI detailing Kavanaugh's "violent drunken behavior" in college.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee wrote a letter to White House counsel Don McGahn and FBI Director Christopher Wray demanding that the FBI interview 24 people in connection with the allegations.

What Trump has said about the investigation

Over the weekend, reports began to surface that FBI investigators were looking into the allegations from Ford and Ramirez, but not Swetnick. The reports also suggested that the White House was limiting the list of witnesses.

"We ask that you confirm that the FBI background investigation will include the allegations of Christine Blasey Ford, Deborah Ramirez and Julie Swetnick and that the FBI will perform all logical steps related to these allegations, including interviewing other individuals who might have relevant information and gathering evidence related to the truthfulness of statements made in relation to these allegations," the Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats said in their letter.

Trump has rejected in recent days the notion he's "limiting" the investigation.

"Actually, I want them to interview whoever they deem appropriate, at their discretion," Trump tweeted on Saturday.

When questioned about the status of the investigation by reporters on Monday, Trump suggested he's open to having the FBI interview anyone with relevant information, including Swetnick.

"The FBI should do what they have to do to get to the answer," the president said.

"I want it to be comprehensive," Trump said, while also adding he wants it to be done "quickly."

The president said it "wouldn't bother" him "at all" if the FBI interviewed all three of Kavanaugh's accusers, while also adding he'd heard Swetnick has "very little credibility."

Though the FBI takes its orders from Trump, he said he's being "guided" by senators on the investigation's scope.

The president also suggested Kavanaugh should potentially be interviewed.

"They should interview anyone they want within reason. You have to say within reason," Trump said.

Avenatti says the investigation is 'a farce and is being run by Donald Trump'

Avenatti, who represents Swetnick, on Monday told Business Insider the Trump administration is "afraid" of what his client might say and rejected the notion her allegations aren't credible.

"The investigation is a farce and is being run by Donald Trump. They obviously are afraid of what my client might say, which is why they are avoiding her," Avenatti said.

He added: "There are many witnesses that can support her allegations and we are prepared to provide those names to the FBI as we have been saying for a week."

Avenatti, who's perhaps best known for his representation of adult-film star Stormy Daniels and is considering a 2020 presidential run, said both Senate Republicans and the president are standing in the way of a truly comprehensive investigation.

Reacting to Trump's claim that senators need to provide him guidance on who should be interviewed as part of the investigation, Avenatti said that "Trump is talking out of both sides of his mouth."

"It's part of the con he is running," he said.
