Three takeaways from the season premiere of ROK’s new drama ‘Ojukwu’

Last week, ROK 2 announced their new drama Ojukwu and, with a title like that, the bar was seemingly raised. Ojukwu is coming at a time when Nigerian viewers are appreciating epic, regal dramas on television (Africa Magic’s Ajoche has quietly becomte a hit) so therefore Ojukwu has got the potential to be a crowd-pleaser. Last night’s premiere is yet to set the tone, but it introduced us to a handful of characters in the village of Umu-Ojukwu, and its internal dynamics.

RELATED: This is why you are addicted to Ajoche

The men wear loincloths and the women in hemp fabrics, with body markings and tattoos. It looks like Ernest Asuzu’s Udoka will be important to the story, as the show calibrates itself with time. Here are the three takeaways from the premiere.

It’s all about the Patriarchy

In the first few scenes, we meet Udoka and played by veteran actor Ernest Asuzu, who is been shunned by the elite club of men in the village because he doesn’t have a male child. Udoka is characterised as a man with a relatively large influence in the village, with lands and livestock. But he has six daughters so there’s that. Nothing says sexism more than the fixation on male children to carry their father’s name, even to the detriment of women. At a point, we see Udoka’s wife advising him to take in a new wife, giving him her blessings and support. “Have you thought of Emeruwa’s daughter?â€ Udoka’s brother Ejiofor (Uchenna Odoputa) suggests to him, “She has the right hips for bearing sons.â€

Yeah, patriarchy.

When Sambasa Nzeribe’s Agu snooped up behind a woman at a stream and called her “aggressiveâ€ for her cold reaction

Women have never been safe, regardless of the place. In the era of #MeToo and the conversations on sexual assault and harassment, some men still don’t get it: how to approach women and how to handle rejection. Men, all of sudden, become babies and must be spoonfed the basics of respectful human interaction. On the show, Agu (Nzeribe) shows up like a creep from a thicket of forest trees, and makes his way towards Urenna as she stoops to fetch water from the stream.

Every step is creepy, and the scene is a study in the predatory behaviour of rapists and abusers. Urenna, who is the daughter of Udoka, looks visibly scared when Agu taps her and she reacts coldly. “Are you always this aggressive?â€ Agu says, still maintaining his closeness to her, perhaps hoping she will soften up. Men have always pathologised women’s reactions when they experience something uncomfortable, calling them “hystericalâ€ and whatnot even when they are fully responsible for the trigger. “Don’t you ever say I’m aggressive againâ€ Urenna dares Agu, and I just had to root for her.

The funny case of sowing wild oats

The premiere of Ojukwu is littered with African proverbs, and it’s in this regard that Agu is given a little more character detail. He is a wrestler from neighbouring village Umu-Anam, quite popular and purported to be a ladies’ man. In his home, a wizened messenger is sent to deliver a message: he’s been invited to a village to have the luxury of sowing his wild oats, for which he will be compensated with cowries and livestock. It’s an interesting proposition, one that we will get to fully understand in subsequent episodes. But I had to laugh when the old messenger says: “You are a wrestler with vibrant male seeds.â€

I’ll leave the rest to your imagination. Also, Kenneth Okolie is yet to show up, which makes the next episode something to look forward to. You can catch it on ROK 2 on Mondays at 7pm, DSTv and GOTv.

Lagos commissioner Kehinde Bamigbetan dumps Ambode

Lagos state commissioner for information and strategy Kehinde Bamigbetan has renounced his support for governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his opponent Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the ruling All Progressives Congress governorship ticket.

Bamigbetan, who was the special adviser to Ambode on community relation and communications before being appointed commissioner, is a well-known grassroots politician with thousands of supporters.

Recall Bamigbetan wrote Ambode’s statement of declaration for the direct primary election of the party amidst speculations the party structure in the state had turned their back at Ambode’s second term bid.

However, Bamigbetan declared total support for Sanwo-Olu at his Ejigbo residence, Lagos Mainland, 24hours before the primary election on Monday, October 1, 2018, in front of party leaders, members and other stakeholders.

The commissioner’s move was in connection with the resolution of the party leaders to adopt Babajide Sanwo-Olu who is a former commissioner as the APC flag bearer for the Lagos State gubernatorial election in 2019.

Bamigbetan urged party leaders and members in Oshodi-Isolo that Sanwo-Olu must get 100 per cent votes during the party’s gubernatorial primary election holding today, Tuesday, October 2, 2018, across the state.

He stated that his action was in alignment with the decision of the party leaders and the directive of the party National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Commissioner ordered the party leaders under his ward to mobilize the entire members of APC in Oshodi-Isolo and Ejigbo to cast vote for Sanwo-Olu.

He reiterated that his loyalty remained for the party National Leader, Bola Tinubu, and the party as a whole, saying he could not do anything contrary to the party’s directive at this point in time.

While the primary elections were ongoing in the state today, some results that have been announced include Bamigbetan’s Ejigbo WardF5 which Sanwo-Olu won by 14,490 votes to 0 votes to Ambode.

Australia football body adopts reforms after FIFA threat

Australia’s football governing body voted for wide-ranging reforms Tuesday against the wishes of its outgoing chairman, ending a long-running battle that saw FIFA threaten to take over the federation.

Football Federation Australia’s 10-member Congress — nine state and territory associations, and one A-League representative — voted 8-2 in favour of constitutional changes, narrowly securing the required 75 percent.

An expanded new congress, which is expected to include the A-League clubs, the footballers’ association and a women’s council, will convene at a later date to elect fresh directors for the board.

World body FIFA has been pushing the FFA to adopt a more democratic governance model, with the expansion backed by the domestic A-League clubs and the players’ federation.

The reforms mean that Australia can defend their men’s Asian Cup title in January, and the Matildas can play next year’s Women’s World Cup, without any concerns over the FFA’s status under FIFA.

But FFA chairman Steven Lowy, the son of Westfield shopping-mall tycoon and former long-time FFA boss Frank Lowy, said the move could compromise the body’s independence, warning that a “red line” had been crossed.

“Clearly the FFA board is extremely disappointed with the outcome of today’s meeting,” said Lowy, who confirmed he will not seek re-election when his term ends in November.

“We believe the loser today is the principle of independent governance.”

Lowy argued that giving clubs more power would hand their foreign owners too much control of the game in Australia, at the expense of grassroots football.

“Suffice to say, the game today has crossed a red line. From a corporate governance model for football, to one with stakeholders with vested interests (which) will compete for power and resources,” he added.

A working group is expected to discuss a new model for the A-League, whose teams — which generate much of the sport’s revenue in Australia — as well as the body representing players, had wanted more say in the running of the FFA.

If the recommendations had not been adopted at Tuesday’s special general meeting in Sydney, FIFA could have established a normalisation committee to take over the FFA.

More than half of the A-League’s 10 clubs have foreign ownership including Melbourne City, who are owned by Abu Dhabi’s Chinese-invested City Football Group.

Other foreign-owned clubs include the Newcastle Jets, who were bought by a Chinese businessman in 2016, and Adelaide United, who were sold to a Dutch and Chinese consortium this year.

Following the death of talented filmmaker and animator Jibril Mailafia in the Jos killings, organisers of the Africa Academy Movie Awards have refashioned their Best Animation category after Malafia. It is now to be known as the Jibril Mailafia Award for Best Animation.

Speaking on this posthumous recognition, founder and CEO of AMAA Peace Anyiam-Osigwe said the Board of the Academy took the decision to honour the late animator because of his place as one of Africa’s shining lights in the area of creative animations. “Jibril was easily one of the top 10 animators in Africa – a crazy editor, a fantastic crew member, a no-stress team player, the vicious death is a wake-up call for us to speak out. We create things, it is time to we use our voices in film, music, dance to shout loud and clear that this unnecessary killings should stop.â€

“It was with rude shock that AMAA received the news of the death of Mailafia who was nominated in the animation category in the year’s award,â€ AMAA’s Director of Administration Tony Anih said. “His entry is titled Group Foto. Yes, he was that good and consistent with his art. He will forever be remembered by AMAA as one of the young brilliant creative talents in animation to ever come out of Africa. We will continue to hold a candle in your name that will never burn out.â€

Born in Nasarawa, Mailafia was an award-winning filmmaker, director, producer and animator. He earned a Diploma from the University of Jos and a Bachelor of Film Arts Degree from the National Film Institute, Jos. He has worked as an animator with international organisations and won over 13 awards and numerous nominations from the short films he has produced and directed. His 2013 animation film Mission Impossible was nominated in the 2013 AMAA in the category of Best Animation. Pulse Movie Review: Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons is a brilliant mix of powerful casting and relatable humour

Poster for Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons

Now this is a movie that blends humour, action and romance that will leave you hooked.

In English folklore, Merry Men is the name of the outlaws who follow Robin Hood and help him in the mission of redistributing wealth- stealing from the rich and given to the poor- across England.

Showbiz mogul and popular comedian AY Makun has taken this name to be the title of his latest movie 'Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons'. As a nod to the original name, this movie is about a group of dashing, eligible bachelors who make it their mission to steal from Nigeria's corrupt elite and give back to the poor.

These merry men are Ayo Alesinloye (played by the ageless Ramsey Nouah), Naz Okigbo (played by Nollywood's original bad boy Jim Iyke), Remi Martins (played by 2-time AMVCA winner Falz the Bad Guy) and Amaju Abioritsegbemi (played by Nigeria's own Kevin Hart AY Makun).

Set in the capital city of Abuja, these four rich men bed powerful women, get contracts from the political elite, steal from the rich, give to the poor and have sex with the hottest women in town. Damilola Adegbite who plays the role of an EFCC agent is an auxiliary member of the Merry Men.

ALSO READ: 'Night School' offers laughs but nothing more

The Merry Men face their biggest challenge yet when they have to go against a notorious and corrupt politician who plans on demolishing Garki village to build an ultra modern shopping complex.

For this band of outlaws, this demolition plan is personal because Ayo Alesinloye considers Garki village his home. The four merry men are now involved in a high stake operation to stop the powers that be from crushing the poor.

Tucked inside this storyline are other subplots that include love stories (don't worry we won't spoil it for you) and a lot of sex appeal from both the male and female characters. Also, it features a street race between featuring two Mercedes Benz exotic cars and what is there not to like about that.

Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons showcases AY Makun's uncanny ability to brand and market his movies. You cannot deny this. It has been one of the strengths of his successful career. He also shows how proper casting can make a movie larger-than-life.

ALSO READ: 'Crazy Rich Asians' is a refreshing love story

Apart from the strong lead cast, Nollywood veterans such as Ireti Doyle, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Segun Arinze, Francis Duru and Jide Kosoko feature in the movie. Their experience help to hold down the movie and move the story line when it threatens to become sluggish. Apart from their expertise, casting these vets will ensure that people troop to the cinema to watch their bankable faces.

Yoruba star actress Fathia Balogun, AMVCA winner Samuel Ajibola, Northern powerhouse Ali Nuhu and other notable faces pop up in the movie.

Merry Men: The Real Yoruba Demons is peppered with comedic punchlines and humorous scenes to leave you reeling. With a dose of sex, exotic cars and opulence, AY Makun has another hit on his hands.

North Korea says peace treaty no bargaining chip for denuclearisation

This undated picture and released by Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) via KNS on September 29, 2018 shows North Korea leader Kim Jong-un attending a photo session with teachers and researchers of Kim Chaek University of Technology in Pyongyang. / AFP PHOTO / KCNA VIA KNS / KCNA VIA KNS / South Korea OUT / REPUBLIC OF KOREA OUT /

North Korea on Tuesday ruled out dismantling its nuclear arsenal in exchange for the US declaring an end to the Korean War, saying a peace treaty should “never be a bargaining chip.”

The North has for decades demanded that the US formally declare the end of the 1950-53 conflict that was halted only with an armistice, saying an official end to the war would ease tensions on the flash

point peninsula.

At a summit with the South’s President Moon Jae-in last month, the North’s leader Kim Jong Un offered to shut down its main Yongbyon nuclear complex if Washington takes “corresponding measures”.

Kim did not elaborate on what those measure might be, but state news agency KCNA said in a commentary that some US experts have suggested trading the end of the war for denuclearisation.

It flatly described that as only the “most basic… process” to restore ties, not a point for negotiation.

“The end of war… is not just a gift from a man to another at all. Furthermore, it can never be a bargaining chip for getting the DPRK denuclearised,” it said, using the North’s full name.

KCNA said that Pyongyang was willing to take “such… steps as eternal dismantlement” of its nuclear complex “if the US takes a corresponding measure” but again did not elaborate.

Cho Sung-ryul, analyst at the Institute of National Security Strategy, said the commentary may be aimed at limiting Washington’s room for manoeuvre.

“The North is trying to reduce the negotiating value of Washington’s potential offer of a peace treaty, by suggesting that ‘it’s not good enough to make us denuclearise’,” he told South Korea’s news agency Yonhap.

A landmark summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in June led to a warming of ties, but there has been little concrete progress toward denuclearisation.

The North’s foreign minister Ri Yong Ho also told the UN last month that there was “no way” his country would disarm first as long as the US pushes for tough enforcement of sanctions against Pyongyang.

Trump however lauded Kim, saying last week the pair had fallen “in love” — their bromance fuelled by “beautiful letters” he recently received from the young leader.

The ceasefire that halted the bloody conflict that sealed the division of the Korean peninsula was signed by the North, its military ally China and the US — which fought on the side of the South.

The South did not take part as its then-leader refused to end the war unless the whole peninsula was unified.

Nigeria's state oil firm posts N18.12 billion trading surplus

The report indicated that the increase in performance was bolstered by the relatively high production volumes of 1.97 million barrels per day in April 2018.

Nigeria's state oil firm, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), has announced a trading surplus of N18.12 billion for May 2018.

The surplus is higher than the N17.16 billion recorded in April.

Ndu Ughamadu, the firm's spokesperson, stated this in a statement on the May 2018 edition of the monthly NNPC Financial and Operations Reports, released in Abuja on Monday, October 1, 2018.

According to the statement, monthly trading surplus of N0.96 billion was mainly due to increased performance of some of the Corporation’s subsidiaries namely, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC), Nigerian Pipelines and Storage Company (NPSC) and Marine Logistics.

"During the period under review, the NNPC group performance was mainly impacted by NPDC’s activities, which recorded a favourable variance of N18.22 billion due to an increase in revenue with an attendant decline in expenses.

"This resulted in N20.93 billion net increase in the upstream gas and power surplus."

The report also indicated that the increase in performance was bolstered by the relatively high production volumes of 1.97 million barrels per day in April 2018, which was sold in May 2018 thereby reducing cost per unit.

The NNPC said it will continue to monitor petrol evacuation figures from depots across the nation and engaged, where necessary, the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) and other stakeholders through the existing Joint Monitoring Team.
