Imperious Osaka saunters into China Open third round

Naomi Osaka of Japan reacts during her women's singles second round match against Danielle Collins of the US at the China Open tennis tournament in Beijing on October 2, 2018. / AFP PHOTO / FRED DUFOUR

Naomi Osaka is keen to move on from the “bittersweet” memories of last month’s US Open triumph and she did just that with a ruthless display at the China Open on Tuesday.

The young Japanese star thrashed unseeded American Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-0 in just 53 minutes on Beijing’s outside hard courts to saunter into round three.

Not to be outdone, China’s on-form Wang Qiang continued her hot streak with a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing of Latvia’s 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Ostapenko, the 12th seed, required treatment on her left arm during the match, but this was still a hugely impressive display from Qiang in front of her home crowd.

The 20-year-old Osaka, whose maiden Grand Slam was overshadowed by Serena Williams’s row with the chair umpire in New York, faces 10th seed Julia Goerges next in the Chinese capital.

Osaka’s reputation is growing fast and organisers on Tuesday said that she has booked her place in the season-ending WTA Finals Singapore for the first time.

But the world number six has appeared to struggle with the fallout from the tempestuous final at the US Open, where Williams branded chair umpire Carlos Ramos “a thief” and later accused him of sexism.

“For me, I don’t know, I don’t know, the memory of the US Open is a little bit bittersweet,” Osaka said on Monday.

Osaka said on Tuesday following her hammering of Collins that her coaching team had been trying to keep her qualification for Singapore secret from her.

“Before someone told me I had to get to the semis here, then I think they thought I would have felt relieved, then maybe I wouldn’t have been as motivated,” she said.

In the men’s draw, top seed Juan Martin del Potro called for treatment by a physio but was mostly comfortable in beating Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas 7-5, 6-2 in his opener.

Also safely into round two is third seed Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated the American Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 6-3.

Finance: General Electric's new CEO should 'put a floor in the stock,' RBC says (GE)

A General Electric sign lights up at night.

General Electric announced Monday that CEO John Flannery would be replaced by current board member and former Danaher CEO Lawrence Culp, Jr., who is a catalyst for GE's operational improvements and should "put a floor in the stock," RBC says.

General Electric's new CEO is a catalyst for operational improvements and should "put a floor in the stock," RBC says.

The company announced Monday that CEO John Flannery would be removed from his role after 14 months on the job, and that current GE board member and former Danaher CEO Lawrence Culp, Jr., would replace him. GE shares surged more than 13% on the news, signaling market confidence in the change of leadership.

"We have known Mr. Culp for over 15 years and have deep respect for his leadership and relentless focus on operating excellence and accountability," a team of RBC analysts led by Deane Dray said in a note sent out to clients on Tuesday.

"Investor confidence in Larry Culp's strategic vision and operating excellence should put a floor in the stock."

Last week, Dray warned that GE stock hadn't bottomed yet, and that investors were skeptical of the company's ability to hit its full-year earnings per share guidance of $1.00-1.07 as the company's lagging power business, price-cost pressures compounded by US-China tariffs, and behind-schedule deliveries of its LEAP engine weighed.

And on Monday, GE let all the bad news out. It announced a $23 billion goodwill charge for its power business, and said free cash flow and earnings estimates for fiscal-year 2018 will likely miss their targets.

Encouraged by the reveal, Dray raised his price target to $15 from $13 and upgraded the stock to "outperform."

Court strikes out IGP’s case against Senate

CourtJUSTICE John Tsoho of the Federal High Court in Abuja, on Tuesday, struck out the suit filed by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris against the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Senate over his summon by the  Senate.

In a judgment delivered yesterday in the suit, numbered, FHC/ABJ/ CS/ 457/2018, Justice Tsoho held that the IGP’s suit constitutes an abuse of court process.

The court agreed with the arguments canvassed by the defendants that the suit, as filed by the plaintiff is subjudice.

Justice Tsoho said he didn’t see any harm that would have been caused if the Police boss had honoured the invitation of the Senate.

“I hold that the Plaintiff (Inspector-General of Police) ought to have honoured the invitation of the Senate, instead of running to the court to stop the Senate from investigating him.

ALSO READ: 25 years after: Will FG conclude expansion of Ibadan-Ijebu Igbo road?

“The action of the Plaintiff amounts to an abuse of court process and, it is hereby struck out”, Justice Tsoho held, adding also that the IGP ought to have honoured the second invitation of the Senate on him, having failed to respond the first one as he was on an official assignment to Bauchi state with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Justice Tsoho returned another suit the IGP filed against the Senate and its President to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati for re-assignment to another Judge for hearing and adjudication.

“This suit is similar to the one I just delivered judgement on and it will be in the interest of justice if this suit is returned to the Chief Judge for re-assignment to another Judge.

“Consequently, this suit is hereby returned to the Chief Judge for re-assignment to another Judge”, Justice Tsoho held.

IGP had, in his suit prayed the court to restrain the Senate and its  President, Bukola Saraki or their agents or any committee from insisting that he must appear before the upper legislative chambers in person, to the exclusion of any of his subordinate officers.

The IGP also explained to the court why he could not honour the Senate invitation in person, saying he was “directed by the President to be among the presidential entourage embarking on a two-day official trip to Bauchi State and therefore on the said April 26, 2018, he was in Bauchi State on an assignment.

He added that, “That as a result of the above development, he then directed and delegated the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations, an Assistant Inspector General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Kogi State, who had adequate knowledge of the two subject matters which the Senate required briefing, to appear before the Senate on April 26, 2018 on his behalf”.

However, the plaintiff told the court that the Senate refused the appearance of the aforesaid officers.

Also, in the suit filed by his lawyer, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN) the IGP urged the court to declare that the letters inviting him by the Senate dated April 25, 2018 and April 26, 2018, relating to pending criminal proceedings against Senator Dino Melaye in court of law is beyond its powers under section 88 of the 1999 Constitution and same is contrary to the Senate Standing Order, 2015, and the provision of section 6(6) (b) of the 1999 Constitution, and, therefore null, void and of no effect.

In an 11-paragraph affidavit in support to the suit, the IGP said in the letter dated April 26, 2018, with the heading, “Invitation to brief the Senate on the inhuman treatment of Senator Dino Melaye over a matter that is pending in Court, it clearly showed that the Senate is aware that the said Senator Dino Melaye is facing criminal charge in a court of law and that he is not answerable to the Senate but to the Judicial arm of Government trying the matter.

The deponent, Lukman Fagbemi, averred that the said Senator Dino Melaye is facing a charge of criminal conspiracy and illegal possession of firearms before a court of competent jurisdiction in Kogi State.

Citing the case law in IGP vs. Kabiru Seidu, aka Osama & 3 others, the plaintiff argued that once the charge is before a court of competent jurisdiction, it is only the Judicial arm of Government that adjudicates and disposes of the matter one way or the other and not subject to oversight functions of the Senate under section 88 of the 1999 Constitution, as claimed by the Senate.

He further argued that the Senate Standing Order prohibits any reference to any matter in which any judicial decision is pending, in this case, the charge before the court in Lokoja, Kogi State is still pending.

In addition, the IGP submitted that there is no way the discussion on Dino Melaye’s case by the Senate will not relate to or impact on the matter in court, that under the 1999 Constitution, and the Police Act, the holder of his office (IGP), can delegate or direct the carrying out of its functions by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Assistant Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Police.

Pulse Weddings: This is how to get pre-wedding pictures that are unforgettable

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith

Right here is a simple pre-wedding picture trick that never fails to produce mind-blowing results.

Pre-weddding pictures have firmly become a big part of a larger picture when it comes to weddings and yes, we’re absolutely here for the continuous use of loved-up pictures to drive expectation for a couple’s big day. Really, how could we not?

Alongside activities like bridal showers, bachelors’ eve and bachelorettes’ parties, taking of pre-wedding pictures is taken very seriously by many couples. Matter of fact, scratch that. Pre-wedding pictures have risen to a level of inevitability. People rarely get hitched without a photo session where a couple would do as they please, projecting whatever mood or vibe they deem fit. There are costumes, settings, locations and a whole lot of other stuff brought in to blend in with the theme chosen by the couple and/or their photographer.

Now this is where the problem arises when many couples are taking their pre-wedding photos – they focus on all the paraphernalia and technicalities of the photo-session that they actually miss the whole point which is to project their love for each other in a manner that is as natural and genuine as it can ever get!

So while the selection of themes and use of posh locations and all the extra effects are not bad ideas, the major thing about a pre-wedding photo session is the connection between you and your partner! Expressing that and letting it shine through in a realistic, believable manner is what you should always aim for. As a matter of fact, it’s what every good photographer will tell you, as opposed to asking for poses that end up looking fake, rehearsed, overused and stiff.

ALSO READ: How and why brides began to throw their bouquets at weddings

Photographer and Twitter user, GoldMan [@iAM_JiZZi] tweets on this subject, saying; “during pre-weddings the first and most repeated words I tell my clients are. Imagine I’m not here, imagine we’re all not here… it’s just you guys, it’s your love. Please love, let me capture it.

“Pro-Tip for couples doing pre-wedding photos in the near future, forget about everyone around and just be into yourselves, writes Anny_Robert [@BeardedCoquet] on Twitter.

He further advises that couples should be “into the moment together and let the love jump out…you can look at the camera from time to time if you like.â€

To get a very clear picture of what is being said here, you need to check out TY Bello’s operational process for Lala Akindoju and Chef Fregz’ pre-wedding photos.

In a clip shared on the photographer’s Instagram page, Lala and Chef Fregz can be seen clearly being themselves, relaxed and absorbed in their own world; laughing away as if it’s no one’s business while TY’s super-expensive camera clicked away, capturing so many more cute moments than was eventually shared with the world on the morning of their traditional wedding.

The end products of that session came out and there can be no denying that they were really, really fantastic.

Now, if you ever need a template of candidness on with which to work for that your forthcoming pre-wedding photo session, that's it!

Three takeaways from the season premiere of ROK’s new drama ‘Ojukwu’

Last week, ROK 2 announced their new drama Ojukwu and, with a title like that, the bar was seemingly raised. Ojukwu is coming at a time when Nigerian viewers are appreciating epic, regal dramas on television (Africa Magic’s Ajoche has quietly becomte a hit) so therefore Ojukwu has got the potential to be a crowd-pleaser. Last night’s premiere is yet to set the tone, but it introduced us to a handful of characters in the village of Umu-Ojukwu, and its internal dynamics.

RELATED: This is why you are addicted to Ajoche

The men wear loincloths and the women in hemp fabrics, with body markings and tattoos. It looks like Ernest Asuzu’s Udoka will be important to the story, as the show calibrates itself with time. Here are the three takeaways from the premiere.

It’s all about the Patriarchy

In the first few scenes, we meet Udoka and played by veteran actor Ernest Asuzu, who is been shunned by the elite club of men in the village because he doesn’t have a male child. Udoka is characterised as a man with a relatively large influence in the village, with lands and livestock. But he has six daughters so there’s that. Nothing says sexism more than the fixation on male children to carry their father’s name, even to the detriment of women. At a point, we see Udoka’s wife advising him to take in a new wife, giving him her blessings and support. “Have you thought of Emeruwa’s daughter?â€ Udoka’s brother Ejiofor (Uchenna Odoputa) suggests to him, “She has the right hips for bearing sons.â€

Yeah, patriarchy.

When Sambasa Nzeribe’s Agu snooped up behind a woman at a stream and called her “aggressiveâ€ for her cold reaction

Women have never been safe, regardless of the place. In the era of #MeToo and the conversations on sexual assault and harassment, some men still don’t get it: how to approach women and how to handle rejection. Men, all of sudden, become babies and must be spoonfed the basics of respectful human interaction. On the show, Agu (Nzeribe) shows up like a creep from a thicket of forest trees, and makes his way towards Urenna as she stoops to fetch water from the stream.

Every step is creepy, and the scene is a study in the predatory behaviour of rapists and abusers. Urenna, who is the daughter of Udoka, looks visibly scared when Agu taps her and she reacts coldly. “Are you always this aggressive?â€ Agu says, still maintaining his closeness to her, perhaps hoping she will soften up. Men have always pathologised women’s reactions when they experience something uncomfortable, calling them “hystericalâ€ and whatnot even when they are fully responsible for the trigger. “Don’t you ever say I’m aggressive againâ€ Urenna dares Agu, and I just had to root for her.

The funny case of sowing wild oats

The premiere of Ojukwu is littered with African proverbs, and it’s in this regard that Agu is given a little more character detail. He is a wrestler from neighbouring village Umu-Anam, quite popular and purported to be a ladies’ man. In his home, a wizened messenger is sent to deliver a message: he’s been invited to a village to have the luxury of sowing his wild oats, for which he will be compensated with cowries and livestock. It’s an interesting proposition, one that we will get to fully understand in subsequent episodes. But I had to laugh when the old messenger says: “You are a wrestler with vibrant male seeds.â€

I’ll leave the rest to your imagination. Also, Kenneth Okolie is yet to show up, which makes the next episode something to look forward to. You can catch it on ROK 2 on Mondays at 7pm, DSTv and GOTv.

Lagos commissioner Kehinde Bamigbetan dumps Ambode

Lagos state commissioner for information and strategy Kehinde Bamigbetan has renounced his support for governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his opponent Babajide Sanwo-Olu for the ruling All Progressives Congress governorship ticket.

Bamigbetan, who was the special adviser to Ambode on community relation and communications before being appointed commissioner, is a well-known grassroots politician with thousands of supporters.

Recall Bamigbetan wrote Ambode’s statement of declaration for the direct primary election of the party amidst speculations the party structure in the state had turned their back at Ambode’s second term bid.

However, Bamigbetan declared total support for Sanwo-Olu at his Ejigbo residence, Lagos Mainland, 24hours before the primary election on Monday, October 1, 2018, in front of party leaders, members and other stakeholders.

The commissioner’s move was in connection with the resolution of the party leaders to adopt Babajide Sanwo-Olu who is a former commissioner as the APC flag bearer for the Lagos State gubernatorial election in 2019.

Bamigbetan urged party leaders and members in Oshodi-Isolo that Sanwo-Olu must get 100 per cent votes during the party’s gubernatorial primary election holding today, Tuesday, October 2, 2018, across the state.

He stated that his action was in alignment with the decision of the party leaders and the directive of the party National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Commissioner ordered the party leaders under his ward to mobilize the entire members of APC in Oshodi-Isolo and Ejigbo to cast vote for Sanwo-Olu.

He reiterated that his loyalty remained for the party National Leader, Bola Tinubu, and the party as a whole, saying he could not do anything contrary to the party’s directive at this point in time.

While the primary elections were ongoing in the state today, some results that have been announced include Bamigbetan’s Ejigbo WardF5 which Sanwo-Olu won by 14,490 votes to 0 votes to Ambode.
