Mikel Obi: Super Eagles captain hopes Nigeria can beat Argentina next time

Mikel Obi is hopeful the Super Eagles can get the better of Argentina when both sides clash in the future.

Super Eagles captain Mikel Obi is hopeful Nigeria can beat Argentina when next both sides meet on the international stage.

Mikel is missing from Gernot Rohr’s 24 man list for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) doubleheader clash against Libya.

Mikel Obi stats

The 31-year-old is missed the previous qualification game against Seychelles and the international friendly against Liberia after being left out due to injury.

His last appearance for the Super Eagles was in their last group game of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia which ended in a 2-1 defeat to Argentian at the Saint-Petersburg Arena.

Asked about the result against Lionel Messi and teammates in an interview on China Central Television 'Football Night' programme, Mikel revealed that the Super Eagles did a good job against some of the world best players.

He said, ''When we played against Argentina, we did a good job until the 86th minute, but we still lost.

''At this time I have to look for strength from other places. This is a very difficult time. I am very upset on the pitch, but I have to find the motivation.''

Mikel also gave an analysis of the Turkish center referee Cüneyt Cakir who did not give the Super Eagles a penalty after Marcos Rojo handled the ball in the box.

He said, ''Until today, I still think that we can win that game if we got the penalty. I think the referee is unfair. We could have won the game, but the game is over.

''Argentina is great. Messi is also the best player in the world, but I hope we can win Argentina next time.''

Mikel ended reiterating his desire to stay at Tianjin TEDA despite transfer rumours linking him away from the Chinese Super League (CSL).

Strategy: Former GE and NBC exec Beth Comstock is still sorry she turned down a job offer from Steve Jobs more than 10 years ago, but it's not because of the money or prestige

History would say she made a "dumb" move — Beth Comstock, pictured, isn't so sure.

Former NBC and GE exec Beth Comstock was offered two different jobs at Apple over a decade ago. She turned them both down because she wanted to focus on content over technology. Today, she somewhat regrets her decision, but understands why she made it.

  • Beth Comstock, a former executive at NBC and General Electric, was offered a job at Apple twice. She declined both times.
  • Comstock, a co-author of the book "Imagine it Forward," said she was nervous about taking the job — but she also thought it wouldn't afford her the opportunity to focus on content and storytelling.
  • Today, Comstock somewhat regrets the decision, and not only from a financial perspective. But she understands why she made the choice she did.

"I had every reason to say yes," Beth Comstock told Business Insider, "but I said no."

Comstock recently left General Electric after nearly three decades there, culminating in her role as vice chair. She was referring to the job offers she received — and ultimately declined — from Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs. Comstock recounts the experience in her new book, written with Tahl Raz, "Imagine it Forward."

It was the end of 2005, and as NBC's head of digital (GE was then NBC's parent company), Comstock had worked with Apple to get their digital content on iTunes. Somewhat unexpectedly, she received a call from iTunes' vice president, offering her a job as general manager for iTunes. Jobs called her as well, and Comstock went to Cupertino to meet with him.

In "Imagine it Forward," Comstock writes that she felt conflicted, but turned down the job. "The environment seemed very command and control, and I had been trying to get away from that at GE/NBC," she writes.

Two months later, Jobs called her again and invited her to "take a walk" with him in San Francisco. Comstock learned that he wanted her to work directly for him, building on the work she'd done on Ecomagination, a sustainability strategy, at GE.

Again, Comstock was torn; she made spreadsheets with pros and cons of taking the job. Again, she turned it down.

One key reason for declining the job offer, Comstock writes, was that she didn't want to uproot her family. At the time, she was living in Connecticut with her husband and two daughters, one of whom had just started high school.

"I was also nervous about taking an assignment that was so vague," Comstock writes.

Just as meaningfully, Comstock told Business Insider, she wanted to focus on content over technology, making NBC seem like a more natural fit. "At that point in time," she said, content and technology "seemed like very separate paths." This was still two years before the iPhone debuted — and "Steve Jobs wasn't the Steve Jobs," she said.

'In my gut, I worried that I might not have thrived in that environment'

In the years that followed, Comstock said, she sometimes regretted her decision. "I regretted that I hadn't pushed myself to be better," she said. "Certainly when the stock options came rolling in."

She added, "History would say that was a really dumb move not to take that assignment."

In the book, Comstock writes that turning down Steve Jobs "may have been one of my biggest missed opportunities," largely because she missed the chance "to be tested, to grow and be made better." Still, she writes, "in my gut, I worried that I might not have thrived in that environment. There may have been too many constraints on my ability to grow and innovate."

Comstock also told Business Insider that she can justify her decision by remembering that "often we just take things because they seem amazing. And you realize you have the same challenges in pretty much any company."

In retrospect, she said, "I picked a path and had to be committed to make that path work."

Controversy as Rochas' son-in-law declares himself winner of Imo APC guber primary

Photo: Twitter/ Ugwumba Uche Nwosu

Hours after Senator Hope Uzodinma polled the highest number of votes in the Imo state All Progressives Congress primary to emerge the winner, Hon. Uche Nwosu has declared himself as the winner with the highest number of votes.

Senator Uzodinma was declared the winner by the Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Ahmed Gulak in Owerri in the early hours of Tuesday.

Uzodinma was announced to have polled 423,895 votes while Hon. Nwosu recorded 10, 329 votes to place seventh out of the nine aspirants. The result sheet had the signature of Gulak on it as the returning officer.

After the declaration of the result, Gulak was reportedly missing by the Imo State APC when he was not found in his hotel room where he was lodged.

However, Gulak surfaced in Abuja where he said that he escaped being kidnapped while he was at Owerri, Imo State capital. He claimed that nine out of the 12-member committee were kidnapped while he left Owerri “under the cover of darkness at about 4:00am”

“Myself, Col. Igbanor and Hon Bernard Miko were the only three doing this job, as others disappeared, and we learnt that they were at the Government House,” Gulak said.

“So, when we sensed that something was fishy, by 4.00am, we left Owerri after concluding the entry of the results.

“I was informed and the AIG Zone 9 called to inform me that they went for investigations and discovered that the governor himself and some policemen came and rounded up those members and took them to the Government House and until now, they have not been released and anything could have happened to them.

“The election was held, results generated and a winner emerged and the winner is Senator Hope Uzodinma.

However, in a controversial twist, Nwosu has declared himself winner of the primary after he “pulled a total of 455,655 votes against Hope Uzodinma who pulled 9,159 votes.”

He posted the photograph of a document that declared him as the APC candidate for the 2019 gubernatorial election. The document ostensibly lacked the signature of the electoral committee chairman, Gulak, but had the signatures of eight other members of the committee including the secretary Honorable Henry Idhagbon, whom Gulak said “disappeared around 2.00 A.M.”

Prior to Nwosu’s announcement, APC’s National Working Committee, in a statement signed by the acting National Publicity Secretary, Yekini Nabena, said that the exercise in Imo has been suspended indefinitely.

Confusion in Ondo APC as NWC clears Boroffice, Alasoadura, Omogunwa unopposed

Direct primary, best for Nigerian democracy

[FILE PHOTO] Election

Mr John Okoli-Akirika, a legal practitioner based in Awka, Anambra said that direct primary method of electing aspirants remained the best for Nigerian democracy, compared to indirect method.

Okoli-Akirika said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Awka.

He said that direct primary election ensured citizens’ vote had equal weight and aligned with democratic principles which helped electorate to choose candidates of their choice.

According to him, such method of election also encouraged more people to play active role in politics.

He said that on the contrary, indirect method empowered special group of voters called delegates to make the choice for everybody else, thus making system of voting less democratic.

The legal practitioner argued that said indirect method did not give people direct opportunity to elect their representatives based on merit, adding that “it encourages vote buying where the highest bidder takes it. “

He called for equal participation of party members during primaries to enable them exercise their franchise to elect representatives of their choice.

The BMW just unveiled the all-new next generation 3 Series sedan at the 2018 Paris Motor Show on Tuesday.

Set to debut as a 2019 model, the seventh generation of BMW's iconic 3 Series debuts looks to offer a blend of traditional driving pleasure as well as a healthy dose of modern tech.

The 330i will be powered by a new 2.0-liter, 255 horsepower, turbocharged inline-four-cylinder engine and paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

According to BMW, the 330i can do 0-60 in just 5.6 seconds while the all-wheel-drive 330i xDrive can make the sprint in just 5.3 seconds. Both cars have a top speed of 155 mph.

Iran executes teenage rape victim

An undated handout picture released by Amnesty International in London on October 2, 2018, shows Zeinab Sekaanvand. AFP PHOTO / AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL / HO

Iran on Tuesday executed a teenage rape victim who was abused by her husband and convicted of killing him in a “grossly unfair trial”, Amnesty International said Tuesday.

An ethnic Kurd, Zeinab Sekaanvand was 15 when she married her husband. She was jailed two years later, while still legally a juvenile, for stabbing him to death.

She later retracted her confession, saying it had been extracted under duress.

Sekaanvand, who also accused her brother-in-law of raping her several times, was 24 when she was executed, Amnesty said.

“Her execution is profoundly unjust and shows the Iranian authorities’ contempt for the right of children to life,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty International’s Advocacy Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

“The fact that her death sentence followed a grossly unfair trial makes her execution even more outrageous.”

Presented with a state-appointed defence lawyer at only her final trial session, Sekaanvand retracted her earlier confession, which she said was coerced from her under torture by the police, according to Amnesty.

She said her husband was actually killed by her brother-in-law — the same man who raped her.

She said the brother-in-law told her that if she accepted responsibility, he would pardon her, which is permitted under Islamic law.

Amnesty said the court had failed to investigate her statements, relying on her original confession made in 2012 at a police station in which she was tortured for 20 days.

Finance: Amazon will raise workers' minimum wage to $15 an hour, more than twice the federal minimum — here's how many people in each state make minimum wage or less

null

Minimum wage work has been on the decline in the US for several years, and the number of workers making the minimum wage or less varies widely across the states.

  • Amazon announced on Tuesday that it plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour for all of its US workers.
  • The federal minimum wage in the US is $7.25 an hour.
  • Minimum wage work has been on the decline in the US for several years, and the number of workers making the minimum wage or less varies widely across the states.
  • Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, we looked at how many hourly workers in each state earn the minimum wage or less.

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 per hour for all of its US workers. That's more than twice the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

Minimum wage work has been on the decline in the US for several years, and the number of workers making the minimum wage or less varies widely across the states.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks how many people earned the Federal minimum wage or less in each state in a given year, releasing those results in an annual report on minimum wage earners.

The BLS bases its estimates on results from the Current Population Survey, a monthly survey run by the BLS and the Census Bureau that serves mainly as the basis for calculations of the unemployment rate, as well as providing a useful monthly snapshot of the US population.

That means that these estimates come from Americans' own self-reported earnings on the survey, rather than from employers or government administrative sources.

Both the number and percentage of the hourly work force earning the minimum wage or lower has declined in recent years as the labor market continues to tighten. In 2015, about 2.6 million hourly workers in the US were paid at or below the minimum wage — about 3.3% of the hourly workforce. By 2017, that dropped to 1.8 million workers, or 2.3% of all hourly paid workers.

Here's the percentage of hourly paid workers in each state who earned the federal minimum wage or less in 2017, according to the BLS' report. It's worth noting that many states have their own minimum wages that are set higher than the Federal minimum, and that this is likely a big driver in the variation among the states.

American Rapper Kanye West Wants To Finish Recording His ‘Yandhi’ Album In Africa

American Rapper, Kanye West, is delaying the release of his ‘Yandhi’ album to record in Africa. The ‘Yandi’ album was initially slated for release on the 29th of September but pushed back by the G.O.OD Music boss.

READ: Kanye West Addresses Drake, Nick Cannon And Tyson Beckford Over Comments About Kim Kardashian

The father of 3 who was interviewed on TMZ  explained that the album was delayed so that he can record it in Africa.

“I just need to go and grab the soil and cook food five times a day so that my metabolism stays up, and have my kids in the studio and have the mic in the open, so you can hear nature while we’re recording. I felt this energy when I was in Chicago. I felt the roots. We have to go to what is known as Africa.”  Kanye said.

The rapper revealed that a member of his management team had suggested he needed more time and that the ‘Yandhi’ album will now be released November 23rd which is a black friday.

He also made emphasis on what fans should expect from the album; “I started incorporating sounds that you never heard before and pushing and having concepts that people don’t talk about.”

“We have concepts talking about body-shaming and women being looked down upon for how many people that they slept with. It’s just a full Ye album.” West said.

The rapper definitely seems excited to be making music at the moment as he assures his fans to expect a great album “when the album arrives it will be a full ‘Ye’ record”.

Kanye West also recently changed his name to ‘YE’.
