Album Review: Lil Wayne embraces his long awaited moment of glory on ''Tha Carter V''

After a lengthy delay, ''Tha Carter V'' finally gets released, reminding us of the Lil Wayne that influenced the culture on his own terms.

At some point, ''Tha Carter V'' felt like another ''Detox'', one album that was promised for so long, and never to be finished, but on Friday, September 28, Lil Wayne finally delivered on his words and it turned out to be worth the wait.

Six years after it was first mentioned, a dozen of projects in between, the fifth instalment in the series, ''Tha Carter V'' was delivered on his birthday and it arrives packing fire, passion, lyrical acrobatics plus wit, a totality of all we have come to know Lil Wayne for.

The 23 track project parades a number of collaborations that include XXXTentacion, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Reginae Carter, Snoop Dogg and more.

The album opens with 'I Love You Dwayne', which feature his mother saying prayers that will make a grown man cry. The intro is well planned to get you into your emotions and it works out quite fine.

'Don't Cry' featuring the late rapper XXXTentacion keeps the momentum of the earlier track burning, breaking every wall of hard defiance listeners. He is mentioning his mother, talking about death, Wayne is quite unbarred and reflective, as he rhymes, ''Talent is God-given, be grateful, fame is not a given, be humble, and conceit is self-driven, drive carefully''

He is going in hard on 'Dedicate', the flow is pristine Wayne and the song captures the voice of Barrack Obama throwing him a 'co-sign' while giving a speech.

The album continues to unearth real gems in songs like 'Monalisa', where Wayne and Kendrick go at it in an energetic lyrical fest with Kendrick switching his flows to amazing effect.

Other songs like 'Start This Shit Off Right' and the album closer, 'Let It All Work Out' which samples Sampha and has Wayne talking about a shooting incident, contemplating suicide with the imagery on the third verse bringing the project to a fascinating close, making for a seamless listen.

But songs like 'Dark Side of the Moon' with Nicki Minaj and 'Famous' alongside his daughter, Reginae Carter proves that Wayne is fallible after all, as they are unable to match the creativity and magnetism of the other songs.

Wayne’s greatest strength has always been his flow and distinct rap style, which he puts to perfect use across the entire project; singing, rapping and rhyming insane bunch of words together and somehow making sense of it.

The lyrical theme on the album are his most personal and unguarded in a while.

However, the major problem of the project is the length, at 23 tracks, Wayne struggles to maintain the fire and vibrance that he kicked off the album with, allowing room for almost as many misses as there are bangers.

At one point in the first half, the album is on a roll and he can't seem to do no wrong, then it begins to lose its buoyant feel, with many songs sounding more like album fillers and out of place.

''Tha Carter V'' is not Wayne morphing into a new status, he has done that already, it is a triumph for his loyal fans who have waited so long for the project.

Wayne embodies everything that the new breed of rappers represent, and he continues to push the boundaries of his art, only this time, he does it more openly, like the elder statesman that he is, rapping about his life and struggles, giving a prompt that after all these years, Mr Carter remains a dominant presence in the circles of mainstream rap.

Politics: 34 migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa drown in latest Mediterranean shipwreck

34 migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa drown in latest Mediterranean shipwreck

Morocco’s interior ministry said all the migrants on board the boat were from sub-Saharan Africa without giving further details of their nationalities.

About 34 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have died in a latest shipwreck on the Mediterranean sea, the U.N migration agency has said.

The Moroccan navy and a Spanish aid agency put the survival figure at 26, according to reports.

Morocco’s interior ministry in a statement on Monday, October 1, 2018, said all the migrants on board the boat were from sub-Saharan Africa without giving further details.

The ministry said investigations showed that the organiser of the risky crossing of the Mediterranean sea was from Mali.

Joel Millman, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), told Reuters that “the boat was adrift since Sunday with 60 people aboard. At least 34 have drowned, it looks like there were 26 survivors.

In August 2018, the platform of Migration Enlightenment Project Nigeria, MEPN, raised an alarm that over 700 Nigerians died in the Mediterranean Sea while migrating illegally so far in 2018.

The group said out of over 1,500 migrants that have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in 2018, many of them were Nigerians.

Nigerian leader, President Muhammadu Buhari had said those leaving the country through illegal means are doing so 'at their own risk'

He said the country will continue to repatriate Nigerians stuck abroad.

The president stated this during a joint press conference with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, late August in Abuja, the nation's capital.

Monarch appeals to FCTA for functional healthcare facility

HealthcareMr Bulus Wakili, the Chief of Zhiko Community (Esu Zhiko) in Bwari Area Council, has appealed to the council and Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) to provide functional healthcare facility to save lives of women and children in the area.

Wakili made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in an interview on Tuesday at Zhiko, Abuja.

He said that lack of functional healthcare centre had exposed his people especially women to untold hardship and avoidable deaths.

He explained that women in the community were often conveyed on motorcycles to cover about 20 kilometres to Bwari town to attend antenatal and child deliveries.

The monarch recalled that a woman lost her life recently in the community when she was on labour and could not access health centre on time.

He stated that the road to the community was so bad that no taxi or any commercial vehicle ply the route.

According to him, the road is not passable by cars during rainy season and that makes it difficult for his people to access healthcare.

“I am appealing to the Chairman of Bwari Area Council and FCT Minister to intervene and provide us with befitting health centre and other social amenities.

“You need to see a place they call Primary Health Care Centre in this community like “Juju House, no health workers there apart from one woman who often comes around.

“A community of about 4,000 persons needs social amenities like potable water, health care centre and good school but we are lacking all these, he said.

The traditional ruler lamented that politicians would come around to campaign and make promises but had never come back to address the problems of the community.

APO: Hilton launches ‘Big Five’ for Sustainable Travel and Tourism across Africa

Hilton

Hilton (NYSE:HLT) (newsroom.Hilton.com) today announced an initial investment of USD$1 million to drive sustainable travel and tourism in Africa. To do so, the company will focus on five key areas – Hilton’s Big Five:

  • Youth Opportunity: investing in training and apprenticeship programs to build a strong talent pipeline and tackle identified challenges for youth, including underemployment
  • Water Stewardship: the expansion of existing partnerships and the creation of new alliances to help Hilton achieve its goal to reduce its water consumption by 50% and activate 20 context-based water projects in at-risk communities by 2030
  • Anti-Human Trafficking: the provision of training and auditing to mitigate against human trafficking, alongside engagement with local NGOs to address the social challenges in local communities
  • Local Sourcing: the creation of partnerships to build local entrepreneurs’ capacity to deliver high quality and authentic goods and services, and integrate them into Hilton’s supply chain
  • Protecting Wildlife: the promotion of responsible wildlife-based tourism, in line with the WTTC Buenos Aires Declaration on Travel & Tourism and Illegal Wildlife Trade

This announcement follows the recent launch of Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 goals to double its investment in social impact and cut its environmental footprint in half across the globe.

Speaking at the Africa Hotel Investment Forum in Nairobi, Chris Nassetta Hilton’s President and CEO said: “Hilton is committed to creating a positive social and environmental impact in every community where we operate. Africa is an incredibly diverse continent, with equally diverse challenges and opportunities — and as we continue to grow in the region, we are focused on doing so in a way that promotes sustainable travel and tourism. Today we are pleased to take our efforts to the next level with an initial commitment of $1 million, which will allow us to invest in and scale up initiatives that build skills among young people, mitigate risks in human trafficking, engage local entrepreneurs across our supply chain, improve water efficiencies and promote responsible wildlife-based tourism.â€

“Hilton’s President and CEO’s visit to Africa is timely and sends a strong signal to environmentally conscious investors across the continent. It will set higher standards for future projects in the hospitality industry throughout Africa. Hilton’s growing interest in Africa’s promising and emerging market is a windfall for job creation among youth and will significantly contribute to sustainable economic growth and shared prosperity, Leila Ndiaye, President & CEO of the Initiative for Global Development.

Hilton’s Big Five will build upon an existing foundation of partnerships and initiatives to deepen the company’s impact and to inspire positive social and environmental change across its value chain.

Hilton’s existing 41 operating hotels in Africa have carried out 460 volunteering projects since 2012 to support their communities and manage their environmental impact. Some examples include:

  • Passport to Success soft skills training developed with our global partner, the International Youth Foundation, to build competencies including problem-solving, team work and leadership skills. To date, this training has impacted close to 800 young people across Africa
  • Partnership with the International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD) in the Seychelles: Hilton buy from local producers focused on sustainable agriculture and the hotels also created on-property gardens that supplement their supply of fresh produce, and collectively, source over 80% of their vegetables locally
  • Soap4Hope in partnership with Diversey, bringing soap recycling to communities in need. Hilton was first to launch Soap4Hope in eight countries: Kenya, Namibia, Seychelles, Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Mauritius, Ethiopia and Nigeria. Since 2014, more than 39 tons of soap have been recycled by 14 participating Hilton properties, creating over 7,000 bars of soap per month

Hilton has been operating continuously in Africa since 1959 and is committed to long-term sustainable growth across the continent. With 53 properties in its development pipeline Hilton expects to double its portfolio of hotels on the continent during the next five years, including entering new markets such as Botswana, Ghana, Swaziland, Uganda, Malawi and Rwanda.
