Lifestyle: GM and Honda are joining forces on self-driving cars, with a $750-million Honda investment making GM Cruise worth $14.6 billion (GM)

A Cruise Chevy Bolt.

GM will join with Honda to develop a "purpose-built autonomous vehicle" for Cruise, GM's self-driving division. Honda will invest $2 billion over 12 years, with an additional $750 million invested in Cruise. Honda's equity investment raises Cruise's valuation to $14.6 billion.

  • GM will join with Honda to develop a "purpose-built autonomous vehicle" for Cruise, GM's self-driving division.
  • Honda will invest $2 billion over 12 years, with an additional $750 million invested in Cruise.
  • Honda's equity investment raises Cruise's valuation to $14.6 billion.

General Motors announced Wednesday that it has allied with Honda to pursue a shared self-driving future.

Honda will invest $2 billion over 12 years in the collaboration with GM's Cruise autonomous division, with an additional $750-million equity investment that brings Cruise's valuation to $14.6 billion.

GM acquired San Francisco-based Cruise in 2016 for an all-in price of $1 billion. A recent joint investment from GM and SoftBank took the unit's valuation to $11.5 billion.

The GM-Honda partnership will develop what the companies called a "purpose-built autonomous vehicle" for Cruise, intended to provide the carmakers with global scale and possible commercial applications. GM and Honda had previously announced a collaboration on battery development.

"This is the logical next step in General Motors and Honda’s relationship, given our joint work on electric vehicles, and our close integration with Cruise," GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement.

"Together, we can provide Cruise with the world’s best design, engineering and manufacturing expertise, and global reach to establish them as the leader in autonomous vehicle technology – while they move to deploy self-driving vehicles at scale."

Building a Cruise self-driving vehicle with Honda

GM and Cruise have focused on a fully-integrated hardware and software solution to the challenge of establishing an autonomous ride-hailing/sharing network that can operate in urban environments.

The deal has led to the rollout of a fully-integrated autonomous electric car — the tech is being built into Chevy Bolt electric vehicles — that is being fleet-tested in San Francisco, Detroit, and Phoenix, with New York City scheduled to follow this year.

Commercialization, according to GM's president, Dan Ammann, and Cruise's CEO, Kyle Vogt, will arrive in 2019.

"With the backing of General Motors, SoftBank and now Honda, Cruise is deeply resourced to accomplish our mission to safely deploy autonomous technology across the globe," Vogt said in a statement.

"The Honda partnership paves the way for massive scale by bringing a beautiful, efficient, and purpose-built vehicle to our network of shared autonomous vehicles."

The announcement indicates that Cruise, which up to this point was operating exclusively with a fleet of Chevy Bolts, will see it's technology integrated into platforms designed and engineered by Honda.

This is a not-unfamiliar move in the global auto industry, as automakers look to share costs by working together on mutually beneficial technologies.

This Twitter User Is Really Angry That DJ Cuppy Called Nigeria “The Greatest Nation”

King Wole, a very vocal Twitter user who usually comments on music and sports wasn’t so pleased with DJ Cuppy and he wants her to know.

For the recently marked 58th anniversary of Nigeria’s Independence, the billionaire heiress tweeted her love for the country with this tweet that says, “Today, we experience the joy and pride of being called NIGERIANS! The greatest nation.”

King Wole didn’t like it and he let her know by calling her declaration “an insult to the everyday Nigerian” because “Cuppy belongs to the 0.5% mega-privileged” class.

And then he goes on to explain why Nigeria is a really terrible place.

ASUU, Tuition: 5 things you should know about the proposed school fee for Federal Universities

5 things you should know about the proposed school fee for Federal Universities

Here is everything you need to know about the proposed Education Bank and tuition scheme for students in Federal Government Universities.

By now, every Nigerian undergraduate especially those in Federal Government owned universities should have gotten the memo that the government is planning to increase tuition fee to N350,000.

Outrageous? That's what almost everybody has been saying since the news broke.

But the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members across the country have been reacting to the proposed tuition increase asking Nigerians to reject the plan.

However, in case you haven't heard the whole gist, here are five things you should know about the tuition fee the Federal Government is reportedly planning to introduce.

1. What led to the controversial tuition

In 2017, the Academic Staff Union of Universities went on a nationwide strike for over a month. As usual, there was a talk between the union and the government and the strike was called off. But that didn't happen without some agreements between them.

According to Prof. Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator of ASUU,  the union and the government agreed on the revitalisation of the universities and the payment of arrears of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

They also agreed that the EAA be captured in 2018 universities budgets.

And lastly, the Federal Government and ASUU agreed on the need for adequate budgetary allocation to education in line with the UNESCO minimum standard of 26 per cent.

However, none of this has been met, instead, the government set up a negotiation team led by Dr Wale Babalakin to dialogue with the union.

2. Who is Wale Babalakin?

Dr Wale Babalakin is a Nigerian businessman, lawyer and philanthropist. He is the Pro-Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG). Balakin is the Chairman of the Bi-Courtney Group of companies and he is an alumnus of UNILAG and the University of Cambridge.

Babalakin is very familiar with the Nigerian education system.  He understands the challenges facing Nigerian Universities and he is one of the best analysts of the system. This no doubt explains why the FG considered him to lead the negotiating team on ASUU-FG agreements.

As a businessman, Babalakin has a capitalist view about funding education in Nigeria. He believes the government needs to create an enabling environment for private investors to provide the required infrastructure for tertiary institutions.

He once said: “There have been serious plans for education to be free at all levels. My position is that if there’s a choice between free education and good education at all levels, I choose the latter''.

Everyone knows good education costs a lot of money. And for Nigerian students to enjoy it, their parents have to pay because according to him, it costs $3000 to train one undergraduate properly in Nigeria.

3. Education Bank

In a country where the minimum wage is N18,000, paying N350,000 for tuition in Federal Universities will be difficult for most parents. The government is aware of this and that is why Education Bank is part of the package of the proposed school fee.

The Education Bank will provide indigent students with scholarship loans throughout their academic programs in the Universities. Hope that sounds interesting?

4. So, how much exactly is FG proposing?

You might have heard or read that the proposed tuition fee for undergraduates in Federal Universities would be N350,000. That is true, but some students may have to pay much more than that because N350k is just the minimum.

According to Prof Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi ASUU Zonal Coordinator, undergraduates in Faculty of Sciences will up to N500,000.

He (Babalakin) proposed a minimum of N350, 000 as tuition fee for undergraduate students of Arts and Humanities, and N500,000, for those in Sciences, Abubakar said.

5. Why ASUU rejects the tuition proposal

The members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities all over the country have vehemently rejected both the tuition scheme and the education bank the government is introducing to ease the scheme.

The Union have some reasons for rejecting the scheme.

According to Prof Lawan Abubakar, the union turned down the idea because  ''not all the students will have access to loan, and for those who will access the loan, it is the same parents who served as sureties and subsequently pay back the loan, considering the very high rate of unemployment in the country.

ALSO READ: More lecturers disagree with FG on education bank scheme

“Supposing that the student is able to secure a job after graduation, he cannot start a life while paying back a loan of 4 to 6 million Naira, as the case may be.

Another reason ASUU gave for rejecting is based on the fact that ''the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly states that funding education is the sole responsibility of Governments at various levels and not parents.

Finance: Nigeria's foreign reserves dropped to $44.31 billion in September 2018

Nigeria's foreign reserves dropped to $44.31bn in September 2018

Isaac Okorafor, CBN spokesperson, said the drop in nation's reserves was as a result of the rise in the US interest rate.

Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves dipped by $1.32 billion to $44.31 billion in the month of September 2018, according to Central bank of Nigeria (CBN) data seen by Business Insider Sub-Saharan Africa.

This is coming as global crude oil price hit $85 per barrel amid growing sanctions between Iran and the United States.

The Central bank figures showed reserves in Africa's largest economy dropped from $45.62 billion on  September 3, 2018, to $44.31 billion on September 28, 2018, the lowest since March 14, 2018.

This depletion cut short Nigeria's central bank's projection to meet $50 billion marks at the end of 2018.

Nigeria is happy with the current crude oil price

Isaac Okorafor, CBN spokesperson, in an interview on Channels Television Business Morning, on Wednesday, dismissed political insinuations attributed to the fall in the nation's foreign reserves.

Okorafor said the key factor in the drop was as a result of the rise  US interest rate. He said the hike in US rate is affecting emerging markets and frontier economies.

On crude oil price, he said, “We are happy with the development, it is in our favour as long as oil price goes up.

“Nigeria is very comfortable and we will continue to maintain our exchange rate stability.

Okorafor said in the near term the local currency, Naira will appreciate as a result of positive development in the oil market.

In May 2018, the reserves climbed the highest at $47.86 billion in 2018 but made its first decline on May 14 slipping to $47.79 billion, according to an earlier report by Business Insider SSA.

Also from Business Insider Sub-Sahara Africa:

Three things we learned from Man Utd v Valencia

Manchester United were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw against Valencia in the Champions League on Tuesday as the pressure mounts on boss Jose Mourinho.

Here are three things we learned from the Group H clash at Old Trafford:

Problems mount for Mourinho
Assailed on all sides by critical voices, Mourinho was unable to silence the doubters as United were booed off after their winless run stretched to four matches in all competitions.

Since beating Young Boys in their opening Champions League match, United have endured a shocking period including a home draw against Wolves and a League Cup exit against second-tier Derby County.

United’s 3-1 defeat by West Ham United was their third loss in seven Premier League games, making it their worst start to a campaign since 1989-90 and prompting Mourinho to claim some players “care more than others”.

Mourinho is adamant he doesn’t think he will be sacked. But he appears to be presiding over a divided squad after reportedly clashing with Paul Pogba, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Eric Bailly.

Mourinho used his notes in the match programme for the Valencia game to issue a call to arms that once again hinted he was unhappy with some of his players’ effort levels.

“All my life I have followed certain golden rules. One of them is that a team can lose matches — that is just part of football — but the team must never, ever lose its dignity,” he wrote.

“The crest on the chest is more important than the name on the back of the shirt.”

Yet Mourinho’s men hardly responded to that rallying cry in a dour stalemate against Valencia that only increased the pressure on United’s beleaguered boss, who hasn’t won a home game since the first match of the season against Leicester City.

Pogba off key again
If Pogba and Mourinho were ever going to bury the hatchet after their feud escalated in recent weeks, this tepid display suggested the France star isn’t fussed about rebuilding their shattered relationship.

Mourinho infuriated Pogba when he claimed after the midfielder had inspired France’s World Cup triumph in July that he didn’t try as hard for his club as he did for his country.

Although United’s manager might have had a valid point, his comments set the pair on a collision course.

Mourinho stepped up the feud by stripping Pogba of the vice-captaincy last week, then exchanged words with the star during a frosty training ground exchange captured by television cameras.

The 25-year-old was back in the team for the desultory defeat at West Ham, but Pogba had a wretched game and was hauled off after 70 minutes.

This was a marginally improved display from Pogba, who went close to scoring with a second-half free-kick.

But it was hardly the kind of driven performance that United expected from Pogba when they brought him back to Old Trafford two years ago.

Scholes leads chorus of disapproval
Not only has Mourinho lost the support of some of his squad, he is also finding United’s famous old boys turning against him.

Former England midfielder Paul Scholes, a key figure in the Alex Ferguson era at United, has been a stern critic of Mourinho.

Speaking on BT Sport’s build-up for the Valencia match, Scholes once again turned his guns on the Portuguese as fellow United legends David Beckham and Ryan Giggs watched from the stands.

“I am sat here actually surprised he survived after Saturday, the performance was that bad (at West Ham),” Scholes said.

“He’s coming out in press conferences and constantly having a go at players, he is having a go at people above him because he’s not getting what he wants.

“I think his mouth is probably out of control and I think he is embarrassing the club.”

Arsenal out to maintain winning run on long Europa League trip

Unai Emery’s Arsenal are looking to keep up their winning run when they make their longest ever journey for a competitive game to face Qarabag in Azerbaijan in the Europa League on Thursday.

The Gunners have recovered from losing the opening two games under their new Spanish coach and Saturday’s 2-0 win over Watford in the Premier League was their seventh victory on the bounce.

An eighth successive win in all competitions would represent Arsenal’s best run since the spring of 2015, and it would leave them in a strong position to qualify from Group E after they began their European campaign by beating Vorskla of Ukraine 4-2.

Emery is likely to rest leading players for the 4,000km trip to the Olympic Stadium in Baku, which will host the final next May.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech is out for up to a month with a hamstring injury, while playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan may not play given the long-standing political tensions between Azerbaijan and his native Armenia.

Those issues meant Mkhitaryan did not travel with Borussia Dortmund to a Europa League game in Azerbaijan in October 2015, with the German club citing “safety concerns” at the time.

Premier League rivals Chelsea host Hungarian champions Vidi, who dropped into this competition after losing to AEK Athens in the Champions League play-offs.

Maurizio Sarri’s team won their Group L opener, beating PAOK in Greece with a solitary Willian goal.

Old Firm’s Austrian double-header
Scottish champions Celtic have had a poor start to the season, although Brendan Rodgers’ team did beat Rosenborg 1-0 in their Europa League group-stage opener.

The Hoops are traditionally poor on their travels in Europe — excluding qualifying rounds they have won just twice away from home this decade.

That means they are likely to find life tough against Austrian champions Salzburg, who reached the semi-finals last season.

Rangers, meanwhile, face Austrian opposition too.

Steven Gerrard’s side, who held Villarreal away from home two weeks ago, host Rapid Vienna, with the visitors to Ibrox having just appointed a new coach.

Dietmar Kuehbauer, a former Rapid player, replaces Goran Djuricin, who was sacked at the weekend.

Other fixtures to look out for include AC Milan’s home meeting with Olympiakos and former winners Sevilla’s trip to Russia to face Krasnodar.

Truth behind ANN presidential primaries

Album Review: Lil Wayne embraces his long awaited moment of glory on ''Tha Carter V''

After a lengthy delay, ''Tha Carter V'' finally gets released, reminding us of the Lil Wayne that influenced the culture on his own terms.

At some point, ''Tha Carter V'' felt like another ''Detox'', one album that was promised for so long, and never to be finished, but on Friday, September 28, Lil Wayne finally delivered on his words and it turned out to be worth the wait.

Six years after it was first mentioned, a dozen of projects in between, the fifth instalment in the series, ''Tha Carter V'' was delivered on his birthday and it arrives packing fire, passion, lyrical acrobatics plus wit, a totality of all we have come to know Lil Wayne for.

The 23 track project parades a number of collaborations that include XXXTentacion, Kendrick Lamar, Travis Scott, Nicki Minaj, Reginae Carter, Snoop Dogg and more.

The album opens with 'I Love You Dwayne', which feature his mother saying prayers that will make a grown man cry. The intro is well planned to get you into your emotions and it works out quite fine.

'Don't Cry' featuring the late rapper XXXTentacion keeps the momentum of the earlier track burning, breaking every wall of hard defiance listeners. He is mentioning his mother, talking about death, Wayne is quite unbarred and reflective, as he rhymes, ''Talent is God-given, be grateful, fame is not a given, be humble, and conceit is self-driven, drive carefully''

He is going in hard on 'Dedicate', the flow is pristine Wayne and the song captures the voice of Barrack Obama throwing him a 'co-sign' while giving a speech.

The album continues to unearth real gems in songs like 'Monalisa', where Wayne and Kendrick go at it in an energetic lyrical fest with Kendrick switching his flows to amazing effect.

Other songs like 'Start This Shit Off Right' and the album closer, 'Let It All Work Out' which samples Sampha and has Wayne talking about a shooting incident, contemplating suicide with the imagery on the third verse bringing the project to a fascinating close, making for a seamless listen.

But songs like 'Dark Side of the Moon' with Nicki Minaj and 'Famous' alongside his daughter, Reginae Carter proves that Wayne is fallible after all, as they are unable to match the creativity and magnetism of the other songs.

Wayne’s greatest strength has always been his flow and distinct rap style, which he puts to perfect use across the entire project; singing, rapping and rhyming insane bunch of words together and somehow making sense of it.

The lyrical theme on the album are his most personal and unguarded in a while.

However, the major problem of the project is the length, at 23 tracks, Wayne struggles to maintain the fire and vibrance that he kicked off the album with, allowing room for almost as many misses as there are bangers.

At one point in the first half, the album is on a roll and he can't seem to do no wrong, then it begins to lose its buoyant feel, with many songs sounding more like album fillers and out of place.

''Tha Carter V'' is not Wayne morphing into a new status, he has done that already, it is a triumph for his loyal fans who have waited so long for the project.

Wayne embodies everything that the new breed of rappers represent, and he continues to push the boundaries of his art, only this time, he does it more openly, like the elder statesman that he is, rapping about his life and struggles, giving a prompt that after all these years, Mr Carter remains a dominant presence in the circles of mainstream rap.

Politics: 34 migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa drown in latest Mediterranean shipwreck

34 migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa drown in latest Mediterranean shipwreck

Morocco’s interior ministry said all the migrants on board the boat were from sub-Saharan Africa without giving further details of their nationalities.

About 34 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa have died in a latest shipwreck on the Mediterranean sea, the U.N migration agency has said.

The Moroccan navy and a Spanish aid agency put the survival figure at 26, according to reports.

Morocco’s interior ministry in a statement on Monday, October 1, 2018, said all the migrants on board the boat were from sub-Saharan Africa without giving further details.

The ministry said investigations showed that the organiser of the risky crossing of the Mediterranean sea was from Mali.

Joel Millman, a spokesman for the International Organization for Migration (IOM), told Reuters that “the boat was adrift since Sunday with 60 people aboard. At least 34 have drowned, it looks like there were 26 survivors.

In August 2018, the platform of Migration Enlightenment Project Nigeria, MEPN, raised an alarm that over 700 Nigerians died in the Mediterranean Sea while migrating illegally so far in 2018.

The group said out of over 1,500 migrants that have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in 2018, many of them were Nigerians.

Nigerian leader, President Muhammadu Buhari had said those leaving the country through illegal means are doing so 'at their own risk'

He said the country will continue to repatriate Nigerians stuck abroad.

The president stated this during a joint press conference with the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, late August in Abuja, the nation's capital.
