Finance: World Bank says economic growth remains sluggish in Nigeria, South Africa and Angola

World Bank says economic growth remains sluggish in Nigeria, South Africa and Angola

The World Bank has cut its economic growth forecast for sub-Saharan Africa in 2018 to 2.7% from 3.1%.

Growth in Sub-Saharan Africa for 2018 has been cut to 2.7% from a forecast of 3.1% by the World Bank, mainly due to sluggish expansion Nigeria, Angola, and South Africa.

The bank stated in its 18th edition of Africa’s Pulse report released on Wednesday, October 3, 2018.

The report stated that “economic recovery in the region is set to continue but at a more gradual pace. Growth in the region is projected to increase from 2.7% in 2018 to 3.3% in 2019, rising to an average of 3.6% in 2020–21.

It attributed the cut to the sluggish expansion in the region’s three largest economies, Nigeria, Angola, and South Africa.

The World Bank said Nigeria and Angola are currently experiencing lower oil production while weak household consumption growth compounded by a contraction in agriculture negate South African economy.

ALSO READ: Like South Africa, Nigeria may slip back into economic recession

The rest of the countries in the region have been growing steadily this year including those that don’t depend on commodities, such as Ivory Coast, Kenya and Rwanda, the bank said.

Albert Zuefack, the World Bank’s chief economist for Africa, said public debt continues to rise in a number of countries in Africa exposing the countries to new risks.

He urged policy makers in the region must equip themselves to manage new risks arising from changes in the composition of capital flows and debt.

In June 218, the World Bank projected growth in Sub-Saharan Africa to rise to 3.1% in 2018 and to 3.5% in 2019, from 2.6% in 2017.

The bank had based its report on the pickup in manufacturing activity with renewed government commitments to macroeconomic and governance reforms Angola, South Africa, and Zimbabwe.

It, however, said risks remain tilted to the downside, faster-than-expected tightening of monetary policy in advanced economies could dampen investor appetite for higher-risk assets in frontier markets.

Facebook says no sign recent hack spread to other apps

(FILES) This file photo taken on May 16, 2018 shows a figurine carrying the logo of social network Facebook in Paris. Facebook on October 2, 2018 stepped up ways to battle bullying and harassment at the leading social network. The initiative calls for new tools and programs to help users control "unwanted, offensive or hurtful experiences on Facebook," global head of safety Antigone Davis said in a blog post."Everyone deserves to feel safe on Facebook," Davis said. / AFP PHOTO / JOEL SAGET

Facebook on Tuesday said hackers who stole digital keys to tens of millions of accounts appear not to have tampered with third-party applications linked to the social network.

Facebook engineers analyzed logs of outside applications and found no sign of trouble, according to product management vice president Guy Rosen.

“That investigation has so far found no evidence that the attackers accessed any apps using Facebook Login,” Rosen said in a blog post.

Facebook revealed on Friday that up to 50 million accounts were breached by hackers, dealing a blow to its effort to convince users to trust it with their data.

The social network is investigating the extent of harm done when hackers exploited a trio of software flaws to steal “access tokens,” the equivalent of digital keys that enable people to automatically log back into the social network.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg said engineers discovered the breach on September 25, and had a patch in place two days later.

“We don’t know if any accounts were actually misused,” Zuckerberg said last week. “This is a serious issue.”

Attackers would have been able to meddle with Instagram or Messenger accounts linked to Facebook, but could not have tampered with the social network’s WhatsApp messaging service, according to executives.

Facebook said that it noticed an unusual spike in activity on September 16 related to a “view as” feature and determined nine days later that it was malicious.

Hackers took advantage of a “complex interaction” between three software bugs, which required a degree of sophistication, according to Rosen. The vulnerability was created by a change to a video uploading feature in July of 2017.

As a precaution, Facebook took down the “view as” feature — described as a privacy tool to let users see how their profiles look to other people.

Facebook reset the 50 million breached accounts, meaning users needed to sign back in using passwords.

No passwords were taken in the breach, according to Rosen.

Information hackers appeared interested in included names, genders, and home towns, but it was not clear for what purposes, the executives said in a telephone briefing.

The stolen tokens gave hackers complete control of accounts. Facebook is trying to determine whether hackers tampered with posts or messages.

Hackers could have also accessed third-party applications linked to Facebook accounts.

Facebook said it took a precautionary step of resetting “access tokens” for another 40 million accounts where the “view as” was used.

“We’re sorry that this attack happened and we’ll continue to update people as we find out more,” Rosen said.

The breach is the latest privacy embarrassment for Facebook, which earlier this year acknowledged that tens of millions of users had personal data hijacked by Cambridge Analytica, a political firm working for Donald Trump in 2016.

Pogba says 'not allowed' to talk after Man United stalemate

Valencia's Brazilian goalkeeper Neto (L) and Manchester United's French midfielder Paul Pogba reacts after the Champions League group H football match between Manchester United and Valencia at Old Trafford in Manchester, north west England, on October 2, 2018. Paul Pogba said he was not allowed to talk after Manchester United failed to arrest their recent slump with a drab 0-0 Champions League draw against Valencia.

Jose Mourinho’s United have made their worst start to a league campaign in 29 years after an embarrassing 3-1 loss at West Ham and are already out of the League Cup.

Tuesday’s stalemate at Old Trafford was their fourth consecutive match without a win.

Many players avoided the post-match mixed zone interview area after the game to avoid awkward questions.

Pogba was among those to go through but told reporters “I’ve been told I’m not allowed (to talk).”

The French World Cup winner, who was last week told he would not captain the side again, appeared to get under Mourinho’s skin after their recent draw with Wolves by saying United should attack more.

Captain Antonio Valencia and midfielder Marouane Fellaini have both backed the manager despite the growing crisis at the club.

Valencia insisted he is “fully supportive” of Mourinho after appearing to back calls for the under-fire manager to leave.

The 33-year-old ‘liked’ an Instagram post from a fan account which said that “recently Mourinho has made watching us a punishment” and “it’s time for Mourinho to go”.

But he attempted to explain and apologise on Wednesday.

“Yesterday, I liked a post on Instagram without reading the text that accompanied the picture,” the right-back wrote on Twitter.

“These are not my views and I apologise for this. I am fully supportive of the manager and my teammates.”

“Everything will calm down when we get some wins,” the Ecuadoran added. “We are 100 per cent behind the manager.”

The players attempted to show a united front before kick-off by breaking with tradition and taking part in a pre-match huddle.

“Everyone is going in the same direction to try to improve and to do better,” Fellaini said of the on-pitch huddle. “I think we wanted to show that we are together.”

“I think we showed improvement and we have to keep going,” he added. “Everybody (was behind the idea). I think everybody is behind the manager.”

Pornography: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fights sexual sin

Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fights porn

A new website has been unveiled. The goal - to help Mormons heal and overcome porn addiction.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has come with a new way to fight pornography. Here is how:

Over five years ago, the ministry launched a site called OvercomingPornography.org in order to help their members overcome pornography addiction. This was a replacement for an old site called CombatingPornography.org, which was launched in 2010.

According to Howard Bangerter, product manager for the Church's Welfare Services Department, the site was focused on "healing through the Atonement of Jesus Christ out of the dark and into the open with a confidential set of supporters."

How Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is fighting sexual sin

Now, the church has taken things a step further by updated their website from overcomingpornography.org to lds.org/addressing-pornography.

Unlike the old site which had a picture of Jesus and statements from church leaders, this newly updated one is all about the needs of the visitors.

ALSO READ: 5 interesting things you probably don't know about Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

As such, the updated website has a lot of resources and videos from qualified therapists, mental health professionals, and real people.

The site also addresses shame which is a real problem for many Christians who deal with porn addiction.

The site offers answers to specific questions concerning pornography, as well as tips for parents on how to protect their children from the use of porn.

In the press release, Lee Gibbons, a senior product manager in the church's Priesthood and Family Department said, "We are encouraging parents to take a new, importantly different approach to protecting and preparing, responding with love and supporting their child's healing, depending upon their child's specific needs."

The site also has a video of the church's President Russell M. Nelson. In it, he says, "We are mortals; we all make mistakes. But God wants us to become more like His Beloved Son. [We can] literally become more like Him with every passing day. … We want to choose to be on the Lord's side. We want to have Him as our God and let Him know that we are His people."

From next year, the website is expected to offer more youth-specific content.

Strategy: Entrepreneurs who appear on 'Shark Tank' hope to walk away with a big-name investor and a pile of cash, but many say money is just icing on the cake

Money is just the beginning. The founders of Lollaland are pictured.

"Shark Tank" alumni, including the founders of Bombas and Coffee Meets Bagel, say their experience on the show was valuable even beyond the money they were offered. It forced them to think about their business more carefully, and confirmed that their business was compelling.

  • "Shark Tank" alumni, including the founders of Bombas and Coffee Meets Bagel, say their experience on the show was valuable even beyond getting an offer.
  • For example, it forced the entrepreneurs to think about their business more carefully as they prepared for their appearance.
  • Those founders who received offers say it confirmed that they had a compelling business idea.

Few if any "Shark Tank" alums will say they didn't care about the prospect of making a deal with one of the investors.

But many entrepreneurs have told Business Insider that their experience in the tank was valuable not solely for financial reasons.

Consider Randy Goldberg, cofounder of sock company Bombas. He and cofounder David Heath appeared on "Shark Tank" in 2014, ultimately landing a $200,000 deal with Daymond John.

Goldberg said the mere act of preparing for their appearance on "Shark Tank" was useful. The cofounders compiled a spreadsheet with nearly 300 questions that the Sharks had asked other entrepreneurs, and rehearsed their answers to these questions over and over again.

"It makes you take a look and examine things and have answers to questions that you might be ignoring," Goldberg said of the rehearsal process. "It brings things out in the open."

Jack Mann, founder of earplugs company Vibes, hired a coach to prepare for his appearance on "Shark Tank," and learned a technique to help him remember his pitch. Mann said he still uses the technique — which involves associating a keyword in each paragraph of your speech with a different image — today, when he gives presentations.

Multiple other entrepreneurs who received offers from Sharks said it confirmed for them that their business idea was compelling.

Dawoon Kang, cofounder and co-CEO of dating app Coffee Meets Bagel, appeared on "Shark Tank" in 2015 and declined Mark Cuban's offer of $30 million for the entire company. Kang said she and her cofounders have no regrets about turning Cuban down — even though other people called them greedy.

Still, Kang told Business Insider, "To get Mark Cuban to benchmark us at $30 million really was a huge testament and validation of all the work that was done to build this company."

Mark Lim, cofounder of Lollaland, went on "Shark Tank" in 2012 and won $100,000 from Cuban and Robert Herjavec. Lim told Business Insider that getting "validation" was a key benefit from the experience — especially since the business was still in its infancy at the time.

The exposure that comes with appearing on "Shark Tank" — which has a national audience of about 10 million, according to the New York Post — is perhaps the most meaningful benefit.

Nikki Radzely, cofounder of baby-product company Doddle & Co, won $250,000 from Kevin O'Leary. "Going on the show was tremendous for the brand," she said, largely because it brought "awareness to parents that were looking for a better solution to soothe their baby."

Mann felt similarly, though he ultimately turned down O'Leary's offer of $100,000. The two things of most value, he said, were the investors' "acumen and experience," as well as "the obvious exposure that comes from the show."

The future is female: the Nollywood Travel Film Festival to spotlight female directors at Glasgow

The Nollywood Travel Film Festival (NTFF) is an initiative that seeks to promote films by Nigerians living all over the world to new and existing global audiences with the aim of creating new market places for Nigerian cinema. Now in its second edition, the festival this time will beam a spotlight on female directors in Nollywood, headlined by Blessing Egbe, Tope Oshin and Jade Osiberu.

RELATED: Three takeaways from the season premiere for ROK’s new epic soap opera ‘Ojukwu’

Oshin and Osiberu have had a busy, rewarding year, the latter winning an AMVCA for Best Director for her romantic comedy Isoken. All three directors will showcase their movies at the festival: Blessing Egbe’s The Women, featuring Omoni Oboli and Kate Henshaw, is a Lekki Wives-adjacent project portraying middle-aged women and the complexities of marriage and promiscuous relationships; Tope Oshin will premiere her young-adult queer movie We Don’t Live Here Anymore, starring Funlola Aofiyebi and Osas Ighodaro and follows the story of two teenage boys in a relationship and a fallout that could affect the course of their futures; and Osiberu will present her award-winning movie Isoken, which stars Dakore Akande and Joseph Benjamin.

“The Women has established Egbe as a filmmaker with a flair for creating realistic characters and stories likely to resonate with audiences across the world festival director Mykel Parish said. He also added that the other two filmmakers (Osiberu and Oshin) will show the world how strong female voices contribute to the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry.

RELATED: Jade Osiberu created magic with Ndani TV, and now she’s ready to prove something with Isoken

Osiberu is currently working on new projects, Nigerian Trade and Everything Scatter, and Oshin rounded up production for Up North months ago. The NTFF highlighting female directors brings back an echo of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and its efforts to campaign for the inclusion of more female filmmakers, directors and writers, especially POC. It’s largely on this account that Genevieve Nnaji’s directorial debut and Netflix-bound movie Lionheart  received extreme fame.

Scheduled to hold from October 26 to November 4, the NTFF is in partnership with Africa In Motion Film Festival, which is Scotland’s major annual celebration of African cinema.

Lifestyle: GM and Honda are joining forces on self-driving cars, with a $750-million Honda investment making GM Cruise worth $14.6 billion (GM)

A Cruise Chevy Bolt.

GM will join with Honda to develop a "purpose-built autonomous vehicle" for Cruise, GM's self-driving division. Honda will invest $2 billion over 12 years, with an additional $750 million invested in Cruise. Honda's equity investment raises Cruise's valuation to $14.6 billion.

  • GM will join with Honda to develop a "purpose-built autonomous vehicle" for Cruise, GM's self-driving division.
  • Honda will invest $2 billion over 12 years, with an additional $750 million invested in Cruise.
  • Honda's equity investment raises Cruise's valuation to $14.6 billion.

General Motors announced Wednesday that it has allied with Honda to pursue a shared self-driving future.

Honda will invest $2 billion over 12 years in the collaboration with GM's Cruise autonomous division, with an additional $750-million equity investment that brings Cruise's valuation to $14.6 billion.

GM acquired San Francisco-based Cruise in 2016 for an all-in price of $1 billion. A recent joint investment from GM and SoftBank took the unit's valuation to $11.5 billion.

The GM-Honda partnership will develop what the companies called a "purpose-built autonomous vehicle" for Cruise, intended to provide the carmakers with global scale and possible commercial applications. GM and Honda had previously announced a collaboration on battery development.

"This is the logical next step in General Motors and Honda’s relationship, given our joint work on electric vehicles, and our close integration with Cruise," GM CEO Mary Barra said in a statement.

"Together, we can provide Cruise with the world’s best design, engineering and manufacturing expertise, and global reach to establish them as the leader in autonomous vehicle technology – while they move to deploy self-driving vehicles at scale."

Building a Cruise self-driving vehicle with Honda

GM and Cruise have focused on a fully-integrated hardware and software solution to the challenge of establishing an autonomous ride-hailing/sharing network that can operate in urban environments.

The deal has led to the rollout of a fully-integrated autonomous electric car — the tech is being built into Chevy Bolt electric vehicles — that is being fleet-tested in San Francisco, Detroit, and Phoenix, with New York City scheduled to follow this year.

Commercialization, according to GM's president, Dan Ammann, and Cruise's CEO, Kyle Vogt, will arrive in 2019.

"With the backing of General Motors, SoftBank and now Honda, Cruise is deeply resourced to accomplish our mission to safely deploy autonomous technology across the globe," Vogt said in a statement.

"The Honda partnership paves the way for massive scale by bringing a beautiful, efficient, and purpose-built vehicle to our network of shared autonomous vehicles."

The announcement indicates that Cruise, which up to this point was operating exclusively with a fleet of Chevy Bolts, will see it's technology integrated into platforms designed and engineered by Honda.

This is a not-unfamiliar move in the global auto industry, as automakers look to share costs by working together on mutually beneficial technologies.

Outrageous? That's what almost everybody has been saying since the news broke.

But the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) members across the country have been reacting to the proposed tuition increase asking Nigerians to reject the plan.

However, in case you haven't heard the whole gist, here are five things you should know about the tuition fee the Federal Government is reportedly planning to introduce.

1. What led to the controversial tuition

In 2017, the Academic Staff Union of Universities went on a nationwide strike for over a month. As usual, there was a talk between the union and the government and the strike was called off. But that didn't happen without some agreements between them.

According to Prof. Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi Zonal Coordinator of ASUU,  the union and the government agreed on the revitalisation of the universities and the payment of arrears of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA).

They also agreed that the EAA be captured in 2018 universities budgets.

And lastly, the Federal Government and ASUU agreed on the need for adequate budgetary allocation to education in line with the UNESCO minimum standard of 26 per cent.

However, none of this has been met, instead, the government set up a negotiation team led by Dr Wale Babalakin to dialogue with the union.

2. Who is Wale Babalakin?

Dr Wale Babalakin is a Nigerian businessman, lawyer and philanthropist. He is the Pro-Chancellor, University of Lagos (UNILAG). Balakin is the Chairman of the Bi-Courtney Group of companies and he is an alumnus of UNILAG and the University of Cambridge.

Babalakin is very familiar with the Nigerian education system.  He understands the challenges facing Nigerian Universities and he is one of the best analysts of the system. This no doubt explains why the FG considered him to lead the negotiating team on ASUU-FG agreements.

As a businessman, Babalakin has a capitalist view about funding education in Nigeria. He believes the government needs to create an enabling environment for private investors to provide the required infrastructure for tertiary institutions.

He once said: “There have been serious plans for education to be free at all levels. My position is that if there’s a choice between free education and good education at all levels, I choose the latter''.

Everyone knows good education costs a lot of money. And for Nigerian students to enjoy it, their parents have to pay because according to him, it costs $3000 to train one undergraduate properly in Nigeria.

3. Education Bank

In a country where the minimum wage is N18,000, paying N350,000 for tuition in Federal Universities will be difficult for most parents. The government is aware of this and that is why Education Bank is part of the package of the proposed school fee.

The Education Bank will provide indigent students with scholarship loans throughout their academic programs in the Universities. Hope that sounds interesting?

4. So, how much exactly is FG proposing?

You might have heard or read that the proposed tuition fee for undergraduates in Federal Universities would be N350,000. That is true, but some students may have to pay much more than that because N350k is just the minimum.

According to Prof Lawan Abubakar, the Bauchi ASUU Zonal Coordinator, undergraduates in Faculty of Sciences will up to N500,000.

He (Babalakin) proposed a minimum of N350, 000 as tuition fee for undergraduate students of Arts and Humanities, and N500,000, for those in Sciences, Abubakar said.

5. Why ASUU rejects the tuition proposal

The members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities all over the country have vehemently rejected both the tuition scheme and the education bank the government is introducing to ease the scheme.

The Union have some reasons for rejecting the scheme.

According to Prof Lawan Abubakar, the union turned down the idea because  ''not all the students will have access to loan, and for those who will access the loan, it is the same parents who served as sureties and subsequently pay back the loan, considering the very high rate of unemployment in the country.

“Supposing that the student is able to secure a job after graduation, he cannot start a life while paying back a loan of 4 to 6 million Naira, as the case may be.

Another reason ASUU gave for rejecting is based on the fact that ''the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria clearly states that funding education is the sole responsibility of Governments at various levels and not parents.
