Alex Iwobi: Midfielder challanges Cech, Ozil for Arsenal Player of the Month award

Alex Iwobi

For his outstanding performances in September, Alex Iwobi earns a nomination for Arsenal's Player of the Month.

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi will face teammates Petr Cech, Alexander Lacazette and Lucas Torreira who have all been nominated for Arsenal’s Player of the Month award for September.

The 22-year-old has been in impressive form for the Gunners across the English Premier League, Carabao Cup and was hailed on Twitter for an outstanding performance against Vorskla Poltava.

In the game against Vorskla Poltava Iwobi’s man of the match, performance was lauded even though he was not on the scoresheet.

Iwobi will have to battle teammates goalkeeper Petr Cech, forward Alexander Lacazette and midfield summer recruit Lucas Torreira.

Lacazette is leading the votes on the Arsenal website ahead of Iwobi with Cech and Torreira trailing behind.

Following his performance in the Europa League Iwobi was again the difference maker for the Gunners in their 2-0 Premier League win over Watford.

He was also in the running for the award in the month of August where he scored in the game against Chelsea before sustaining an injury which ruled him out of the Super Eagles games in the international game against Seychelles and Liberia.

After a trip to Azerbaijan to face Qarabag in the Europa League, Arsenal take on Fulham in a London Derby scheduled for Sunday, October 7 before the international break.

Tokyo stocks down on profit-taking

A pedestrian walks past an electronics stock indicator at the window of a securities company in Tokyo on October 1, 2018. Japanese shares powered to a new 27-year high on October 1 after the US and Canada clinched a long-awaited trade deal, but other Asian equity markets struggled in subdued holiday trading. / AFP PHOTO / Martin BUREAU

Tokyo stocks lost ground on Thursday on profit-taking after climbing to a 27-year high earlier this week, with a drop in Hong Kong also weighing on investor sentiment.

The benchmark Nikkei 225 fell 0.56 percent, or 135.34 points, to close at 23,975.62 while the broader Topix was down 0.09 percent, or 1.54 points, at 1,801.19.

Hikaru Sato, senior technical analyst at Daiwa Securities, said it was no surprise to see profit-taking emerge “after stocks rose quite fast.”

“A cool-down period is expected to continue for a while,” he told AFP, adding that a decline in Hong Kong shares also helped erase early gains.

The Nikkei index opened higher as investors welcomed a weak yen and a record close on Wall Street.

A trove of strong US economic data on Wednesday elevated the Dow to a second straight all-time high and lifted 10-year US Treasury yields to a seven-year peak.

The yen, which hovered around multi-month lows against the dollar Thursday morning, traded at 114.40 yen in afternoon trade against 114.46 yen in New York on Wednesday afternoon.

In individual trade, Toyota rose 0.58 percent to 7,005 yen and SoftBank gained 1.31 percent to 11,200 yen after they announced plans to create a joint venture to provide “new mobility services” including autonomous vehicles for services such as meal deliveries.

Honda, which yesterday announced a tie-up with General Motors to develop autonomous vehicles, gained 0.23 percent to 3,346 yen.

Nomura jumped 1.44 percent to 554 yen following a news report that it is considering Paris for its post-Brexit EU lending hub.

Dollar rally moves to Asia after US data but stocks tumble

PHOTO: OSCAR SIAGIAN/AFP/Getty Images

The dollar continued to brush aside other currencies Thursday after further proof of the booming US economy sent Treasury yields surging, but Asian equities sank with more Federal Reserve rate hikes looking certain.

A forecast-busting private jobs report, a surge in activity in the services sector and optimism in the retail market were the latest evidence that the world’s top economy is firing on all cylinders, helping send the Dow to a record close for the second day in a row.

However, the news also saw a sell-off in safe-haven Treasuries — a sign of confidence — sending the cost of borrowing to its highest level in seven years, in turn fuelling a surge in the dollar, helping it hit an 11-month high against the yen.

Hawkish comments from Fed boss Jerome Powell also provided momentum to dollar buying.

The greenback extended Wednesday’s gains against its major peers, with easing concerns about a row between Italy and EU leaders unable to staunch a sell-off in the euro.

Higher-yielding and emerging market currencies were among the worst hit.

The Chinese yuan took a hit, despite mainland markets being closed. The dollar jumped 0.2 percent to 6.9 against the offshore yuan, with some predicting it could break 7 at some point.

The US unit hit a record 73.82 Indian rupees and a fresh 20-year high against the Indonesian rupiah, with the two countries battered by surging oil prices and an outflow of cash as investors shift attention to US assets.

It was two percent higher against the South African rand, 1.5 percent up on the Mexican peso and one percent higher against the Australian dollar and South Korean won.

The New Zealand dollar and Thai baht were also sharply lower.

‘Real problem’
The prospect of borrowing becoming even more expensive rattled equity traders in Asia.

Hong Kong lost 1.8 percent with property firms hit by concerns the higher rates — the city’s monetary policy is linked to the Fed’s — will hammer the booming real estate market.

Tokyo ended 0.6 percent lower, while Singapore, Seoul, Manila, Taipei and Jakarta shed more than one percent. Mumbai was down 2.3 percent.

Sydney added 0.5 percent while Shanghai was closed for a public holiday.

“This withdrawal of liquidity and gradual tightening of monetary policy” by the Fed is reverberating across financial markets, Bob Baur, chief global economist at Principal Global Investors, told Bloomberg TV. He warned US Treasuries would likely rise further “later this year, early next year — and I think that’s going to be a real problem for stock markets.”

However, Stephen Innes, head of Asia-Pacific trading at OANDA was more upbeat about the outlook.

“With positive signs gradually showing up for Shanghai and the Nikkei, Asia equities, while still pulling up the rear, should make leaps and bounds this quarter, even more if the US and China resolve their trade issues.”

He added that the central People’s Bank of China had a big enough war chest to support the economy.

“It will take some patience, but three months down the road we should start to see a shift higher in mainland economic data after the PBoC stimulus efforts,” he said.

On oil markets both main contracts edged down after serving up yet another sharp rise on Wednesday on the back of comments from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and White House National Security Advisor John Bolton regarding Iran that exacerbated worries about a supply hit from the region.

With US sanctions on Tehran due to be implemented early next month there are worries about narrowing supplies, while upheaval in Venezuela and the strong dollar have also helped the rally.

In early European trade London fell 0.3 percent, Paris lost 0.4 percent and Frankfurt eased 0.1 percent.

The struggling entrepreneur: How I got international customers to buy my products with ease — Okon Achibong

Innovation is the new competitive edge for every business.

Six months ago, my business was at a critical phase; we were expanding. Our products had caught the eye of the international market and buyers across the world were indicating interest.

Whilst this new wave of interest was long overdue, I was scared that the negative perception of Nigeria in some quarters in the international market would affect my business. My fear was not without reason, we had lost a lot of sales in the past due to this issue.

So, this time I was taking steps to ensure that the interests crystalised into sales. I engaged a PR firm in hopes that their branding efforts would help allay the fears of international buyers and drive them to patronise my business. A few months later, the branding efforts started bearing fruits.

Three months after we engaged the PR firm, we received international orders from 15 customers with three making full payments for their orders. This was a new dawn as I could sense better days ahead. But then an issue arose… the remaining 12 customers were making little orders and had insisted on making payments with their credit cards due to the cost of traditional payment methods. This was a big issue because our website through which orders came in did not have a payment functionality.

We had tried getting a solution a year ago but, the cost of acquiring such a solution was on the high side and we had to jettison the idea. This request kept me up late at night as I wondered if this was going to be another case of poor sales. Where do I even get such a solution from within 48 hours?

The next morning, I gathered my accounts team and charged them with the responsibility of looking for a solution before the close of business. As fate would have it, one of my staff in his search stumbled on an advert online about a solution called Global Pay. Immediately, he reached out to me and we called the bank. A gentleman picked up and after exchanging pleasantries we told him of our plight and the solution we had seen.

In few words, he explained that with Global Pay we could receive payments from anywhere in the world with debit or credit cards. A bit sceptical, we applied for it and the solution was set up on our website in less than 24 hours. We reached out to the remaining 12 customers advising them to visit our website to make payment. 20 minutes later, we received feedback on how seamless the payment process was much to my surprise. My accounts team reconfirmed the payments from the payment notifications and the online monitoring log and all payments were received. We dispatched their orders afterwards.

Global Pay is not just a payment solution, it is a business saver that has eliminated major payment hassles for my business.

Alex Iwobi: Pires says midfielder made the difference for Arsenal in win over Watford

Alex Iwobi

After watching Iwobi's performance against Watford, Pires says the the midfielder is destined for greatness.

Arsenal legend Robert Pires has stated that midfielder Alex Iwobi made the difference for the Gunners in their 2-0 win over Watford.

The midfielder was not named in the starting line up for the encounter against Watford but was introduced off the bench by new Arsenal boss Unai Emery in the 63rd minute as he replaced Aaron Ramsey in the 63rd minute.

Before Iwobi’s introduction, the Gunners were being held at home at the Emirates Stadium.

Iwobi, however, was able to force the assist for Craig Cathcart’s own goal which broke the deadlock and also played a part in the build-up for Mesut Ozil’s goal which was the game winner.

In an interview with Standard Sport, Pires revealed that Iwobi is set for a bright future with Arsenal.

He said, “I know just one thing, I told him after the game he made the difference. He's a great player, very fast.

“He finds good solutions on the field with his vision. He has a good mentality and spirit. Of course, he's young but he's learning very quickly.

“Arsenal with Alex Iwobi and Alex Iwobi with Arsenal have a good future.

Iwobi has been tipped for greatness at Arsenal by legends like Ian Wright and after the game, he stated that he is progressing under the new manager.

He said, “I'm more positive and more confident with the ball. The boss has basically told me that if something doesn't work, just keep going and don't dwell on it.

“He's told me to stop being so critical and to just keep trying no matter what happens, no matter if things don't go as I want them to.

“That's given me a lot more confidence to try a few more things, like beat a player, to shoot more. I'm always ready to get on the ball a bit more, so I guess it's helped in that sense.

“I've lost a bit of weight because of the intense training and I think it's made me a bit sharper.

Iwobi has been asked to be more aggressive by Emery and is expected to be in action when they take on Fulham in their nest Premier League encounter scheduled for Saturday, October 7.

Domestic Violence: NGO recommends early campaigns

INTIMATE issues with Dr Olubusola, an NGO, has recommended early campaigns against domestic violence in secondary schools to sensitise teenagers who were most often victims of such violence.

Dr Olubusola Olufemi, the National Coordinator of the organisation, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja in commemoration of International Day of Non-Violence.

Olufemi said this had become paramount due to the increase in cases relating to child abuse, youth violence, communal clashes and domestic violence.

She said such necessitated the need to increase awareness programmes for the younger generation across the country.

“The target for secondary schools is because teenagers are usually the first victims of domestic violence.

“Domestic violence doesn’t start when they become adults because for an abuser the adult does not decide in his heart to commit violence.

ALSO READ: Police arrest neighbour for alleged killing of sickly septuagenarian in Osun

“It is something that has been there since teenage years to adolescence and then adulthood, that is why it has become crucial to take the message to the young ones,’’ she said.

Olufemi noted that cases of domestic violence were enormous and could not be ignored especially where the consequences had grave danger on the society.

According to her, violence in the home is inevitable, however, the occurrence of such violence can be reduced through education, campaign and enlightenment programmes.

She said `bullying and extortion’ were some of the common forms of violence in boarding schools which could later be translated into domestic violence.

She said the common lessons taught by the group in its campaigns included love, counselling for couples and people going through one form of violence including depression and suicide.

Olufemi explained that some of the interventions of the organisation include empowering widows, counselling for teenage pregnant girls, recruiting counsellors to take the campaign to more schools in Nigeria.

She said the group aims at building a strong community to impact, develop and empower men, women and youths who would grow, mature and become responsible members of their communities.

“The foundation has a triangle of hope which stands for Reconciling, Impacting and Building.

“Reconciling through our guidance and counselling programmes, impacting through our charity outreach, and mentoring and building through our training and teaching programmes.

“The team also hopes to train, develop and empower individuals that no matter where they are, healing and happiness can be achieved even from the deepest wounds.

“We want to see more intimate couples who are happy raising responsible children in the society,’’ she added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the group started on Facebook in 2012 with about 15,000 members around the world.
