Atiku: An inch away from PDP presidential ticket

AtikuIn life, no season remains forever and similarly, situations also change one after another. When a storm emerges in an ocean, it creates violent wind and heavy rain, sometimes, causing a dreadful disaster but after some time there prevail a reign of calmness. Though the storm disturbs the man’s life, it will not remain for a long period as it soon disappears and calmness prevails everywhere.

This is the story of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the Wazirin Adamawa and the most powerful vice president Nigeria has ever produced. Though Atiku is easily the most prepared among all those who have sought or are still seeking the nation’s presidency in the last decade, his ambition has been repeatedly frustrated by persons who feel threatened by his profile.

Anytime he announced his intention to become president of Nigeria, his traducers will derisively ask : what exactly does Atiku want? Why is he so desperate to become president? Must he be president?

But not anymore. Things have now changed with many Atiku detractors shocked at the momentum his current effort to win next year’s presidential poll has started gathering.

An objective analyst would see that the key indicators to determine who flies the Peoples Democratic Party’s flag at next year’s poll lie more on how their campaigns have progressed in the last few months; how their popularity have been perceived and how their messages have resonated with the people.

Although pundits have predicted a keen contest between Atiku, Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State and former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso at tomorrow’s convention scheduled to hold in PortHacourt, a close look at the situation reveals the clear edge that the former number two citizen has over 13 other aspirants jostling for the party’s ticket in almost every area of assessment.

This conclusion stems not just from the way Atiku has managed to project himself to a level in which he is seen as capable and well-prepared for the task ahead, but also because the messages of other contenders are not well received by the people.

First, his submissions on restructuring and fiscal federalism have been applauded as a timely wake up call, since his words bear close resemblance to the aspirations of the citizenry, who have for long yearned for a new Nigeria.

From grapevine, many hints on the likely outcome of Saturday’s presidential primary are emerging. Some governors of the PDP are receptive to Atiku’s aspiration because they see him as the only one with the capacity to rebuild the party and ensure that it takes over power in 2019. A deal has reportedly been struck in this direction.

Beyond what may be playing out in the realm of underground politics, the political situation in the north is clearly cloudy. Political loyalty is shifting very fast. The harsh economic situation means unconscious political reappraisal.

Indeed it is no longer news that in the northern part of the country, many are uncomfortable with the grinding paralysis that have come to signpost President Muhammadu Buhari’s economic programmes.

As much as the downtrodden in the North love Buhari, there is a gradual realignment targeting Atiku who they see as a likely new successor amenable to welfare politics and inclusive governance.

As a prelude to an elaborate campaign that will kick off after the primary election, Atiku’s media handlers have already put out art print adverts, world class jingles, and have held town hall meetings that communicate the strength of his party and his popularity to Nigerians.

The reality is that Atiku’s edge over all other aspirants in both the traditional and the new media has a lot to do with the consistency of his campaign strategy and richness of his meetings, visitations and town hall meetings.

But by far the most outstanding of Atiku’s communications strategy is the rich manifesto which addresses all the challenges currently confronting the country. No document from any aspirant within the PDP can match Atiku’s manifesto in terms of concept, content and creativity.

The same edge is seen on the social media where the Wazirin Adamawa is a household name. The import of this is that VP Atiku is by far more popular and more acceptable to the people.

It is also impossible to ignore the successes recorded by Atiku even before his foray into politics. A quintessential businessman and industrialist, with hard, wide network cutting across various sectors of our national life, Atiku has created several hundreds of thousands of jobs to many poor Nigerians. This gives Atiku a competitive edge in tomorrow’s contest.

While Atiku made reference to visible achievements to his name during his nationwide consultations and town hall meetings, other aspirants made big promises, sometimes pledging to build bridges where rivers do not exist.

That Atiku literally ran the first four years of former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration gives the former vice president a head start in this contest.

At the Customs, Atiku stamped his seal of excellence. The groundbreaking achievements that the then Department of Customs recorded in terms of increased revenue generation for the nation speak volumes of the competence of the PDP presidential aspirant.

As a team player, he never shirked responsibility nor abdicate his chosen path of greatness. Humble, unassuming, articulate and trustworthy, Atiku often brings to his job a selfless disposition that thrust him up for greater service to God and humanity.

This disposition is consistent with the yearning of Nigerians from all facets of our national life-to raise the bar in public service and sustenance of a legacy of honour.

Oby Ezekwesili Shortlisted For 2018 Nobel Peace Prize

Former Minister of Education and co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign, Obiageli Ezekwesili has been shortlisted for the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

Ezekwesili who is also the former Vice President of the World Bank and the Extractive Industry Transparency International (EITI) and will be competing alongside other four laureates (Dr. Denis Mukwege, Nadia Murad & Tarana Burke for the World Food Programme); SOS Méditerranée, Doctors Without Borders & International Rescue Committee and Reporters Without Borders), has been vocal about the campaign including Leah Sharibu who is still held in captivity.

The PRIO director, Henrik Urdal, describing Ezekwesili said,

“Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education in Nigeria and Vice President for Africa in the World Bank and one of the founders of Transparency International, has been an international champion in the fight against corruption. Ezekwesili was also the Federal Minister of Solid Minerals and the Chairperson of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), leading the first-ever national implementation of the global EITI standards.”

“Even though transparency and anti-corruption champions have not traditionally been considered as obvious candidates for the Peace Prize… A Nobel Peace Prize to the field of anti-corruption and transparency would be a welcome boost now that key actors such as the U.S. have abandoned the EITI by the wayside.”

APO: African governments urged to integrate statistics and geospatial information for sustainable development

United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA)

The Regional Committee of the United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management in Africa (UN-GGIM: Africa) ended Thursday with experts urging African leaders to prioritize dialogues that need to take place to ensure national statistical, planning and mapping authorities collaborated effectively in the development of respective data infrastructures and systems on the continent.

This, they said, would encourage a potential unification of national statistical offices and national mapping authorities bringing shared benefits to both offices.

Delegates noted that for Africa to effectively implement the SDG and 2063 agendas, decision makers needed to recognize that an in-depth knowledge of links among people, economic activities and geographic locations could promote a deeper understanding of key social, economic and environmental issues than is possible through an assessment of socioeconomic data alone.

They recommended that UN-GGIM: Africa be established as an overarching governance framework in the field of geospatial information management, science and technology to ensure it has capacity to adapt policies and strategic actions to address issues of particular relevance to Africa and also ensure that national bodies are capable of addressing Africa’s unique concerns.

Participants called on the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the African Union Commission (AUC) and other pan-African institutions to work collaboratively in promoting and advocating the importance of geospatial information in the achievement of sustainable development objectives at national, regional and international levels. Also of crucial importance is the promotion of trade and regional integration.

The ECA and UN-GGIM: Africa were urged to continue the development of the African spatial statistical framework and guidelines for geo-enabling national strategies for the development of statistics.

Participants took note of their partners’ statistical capacity-building programs and recommended that they foster synergies and coordinate actions in support of national statistical systems in financial, technical and human resources.

Delegates were drawn from member States with experts in the field from the continent and beyond also in attendance.

Widows solicit government support on microcredit

MicrocreditSOME women including widows in Pesepa Community in Bwari Area Council have called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration to support them with microcredit to boost their farming capacity and enhance food production.

The women who made the appeal in separate interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) said that a lot of them find difficulties engaging in large-scale farming due to lack of funds.

One of the women, Mrs Hana Musa, explained that they needed capital to enable them sustain their husbands and adequately cater for their children needs both academically and otherwise.

According to her, if they have access to such funds they could conveniently engage in large-scale farming, buy modern milling machines, cassava processing, storage facilities and save time in processing their crops.

She further urged governments to expedite action by providing them soft loans to tackle poverty and hunger across the country.

She said: “Though we find it difficult to farm in large scale but the little crops we harvest get rotten in the farm because we are unable to convey them home due to bad roads.

ALSO READ: I’ll resign from INEC if our commission is found culpable over Osun gov poll ― Agbaje

“At times we trek long distances to other communities like Ija Gwari in Niger State to mill our grains which poses lot of dangers to us and our children.

“If government can assist us with money we will be able to invest it wisely by extending our farmlands, procuring food processors and tractors, among others, and such efforts will translate to bountiful harvest and by and large ensure food security in the nation.

Also, Mrs Daudu Musa identified some of their challenges to include bad road to convey their crops from farms, animals like monkeys and baboons consuming and destroying their grains, among others.

She, however, noted that presently, majority of their grains, crops are being devoured by animals, adding that provision of such fund will assist them in purchasing chemicals to fumigate their farmlands and safeguard their grains from being destroyed by animals.

Musa also called for the urgent intervention of government for construction of good roads for easy access to the markets to sell their products.

Similarly, Mrs Lami Sunday, aged 110, pleaded with the government to provide jobs for jobless youths in order to empower them to adequately cater for the aged in the society.

Sunday lamented that a large number of youths in the community including her grandchildren were restive due to unemployment, adding that such gap has a negative impact on the welfare of the elderly in the society.

She said: “Government is supposed to be responsible for the well-being of vulnerable women and aged in the society but failed and our children and grandchildren are not in the position to do because majority of them are not employed.

“As aged people, we cannot help ourselves except somebody help us and failure for government to provide job for the younger generations is a big challenge to us.

“Those in power should realise that one day they will as well get old and need the help of the younger generations.

“Government should as a matter of urgency address our plight by providing jobs for the youth of the community so that they can adequately meet our needs and as well age gracefully as the future of the community will be bright, she noted.

Relationship Talk With Bukky: Why won't she let go of her male bestie for our relationship's sake?

I hate that she has a male bestie.

I know he's her friend, I’ve asked her and she said nothing was going on between them.

Dear Bukky,

It's a long story but I will cut it short. I confirmed my girlfriend visited a man who's to get married in two months’ time.

I know he's her friend, I’ve asked her once she said nothing was going on between them. When I asked her what she went to his house to do she said she went to cook for him…

She was even swearing with her womb that she didn't have sex with him…

Advise me on what to do please, I love her so much.
__________________________

Hi reader,

If you are wondering whether to trust your girl or not, I think she deserves that trust.

So please, believe her on this one.

As you said, you are aware of the friendship between them and she had once told you that that’s all they have going on between them.

So, the logical thing is to believe her because that’s what relationships are about – trust and unflinching support.

However, lovers are not supposed to put each other in a position to question each other’s loyalty; and apparently, this is exactly the position your girl has put you in by continuing this friendship despite your obvious discomfort with the friendship she has with this guy

I advise that you let her know about this.

She needs to realise that while she retains the freedom to keep friends, it shouldn’t be to the detriment or demise of your relationship.

Have a conversation with her about the need to set reasonable limits and boundaries to this friendship and others.

It is not wrong to keep friends, but it is not cool to put your partner in an uncomfortable position with the friendships.

That’s what I think.

Ezekwesili shortlisted for PRIO’s 2018 Nobel Peace Prize

Former Vice President of the World Bank and Co-convener of the #BringBackOurGirls movement, Obiageli Ezekwesili, has been named on the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize shortlist by the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO).

Ezekwesili and the Extractive Industry Transparency International (EITI) received a joint nomination as one of five likely laureates, based on an independent assessment.

“Ezekwesili and the EITI are worthy candidates because of their efforts in making the world more transparent and less corrupt, the PRIO director, Henrik Urdal, said in a statement announcing the shortlist.

Explaining why Ezekwesili is a serious contender for the award, Urdal said, “Ezekwesili, former Minister of Education in Nigeria and Vice President for Africa in the World Bank and one of the founders of Transparency International, has been an international champion in the fight against corruption. Ezekwesili was also the Federal Minister of Solid Minerals and the Chairperson of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), leading the first ever national implementation of the global EITI standards.

Even though transparency and anti-corruption champions have not traditionally been considered as obvious candidates for the Peace Prize, the statement said Ezekwesili’s work is deserving of attention. “A Nobel Peace Prize to the field of anti-corruption and transparency would be a welcome boost now that key actors such as the U.S. have abandoned the EITI by the wayside, the statement said.

Every year since 2002, the PRIO Director releases an eagerly anticipated shortlist of likely Nobel Peace laureates. In addition to Ezekwesili & the EITI, the four other nominees who made this year’s shortlist include: the World Food Programme; Dr. Denis Mukwege, Nadia Murad & Tarana Burke; SOS Méditerranée, Doctors Without Borders & International Rescue Committee; as well as the Reporters Without Borders.

The winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, October 5.  According to the Nobel Committee, there are 331 candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize for 2018 out of which 216 are individuals and 115 are organizations.

Politics: China's cult of personality got a whole lot weirder with a new millennial-themed quiz show devoted to leader Xi Jinping

A screenshot from an episode of "Socialism Is a Bit Cool: Studying Xi in the New Era."

One of China's largest entertainment TV networks debuted a new quiz show "intended to guide Party members and young students to better comprehend the new thoughts, and to embrace each new year."

China's cult of personality has gotten a whole lot weirder with the debut of a new millennial-themed quiz show devoted to the life and teachings of president and "paramount leader" Xi Jinping.

One of China's largest entertainment TV networks aimed at millennials, Hunan TV, launched the quiz program called "Socialism Is a Bit Cool: Studying Xi in the New Era," which asks contestants to answer questions focused on Xi, his upbringing, and his personal philosophies.

The show comes as Xi has slowly been cementing his grip on power over China, cracking down on his political opponents and silencing dissent using strict censorship online.

Xi's name and teachings, called "Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era" have been enshrined in the country's constitution, and he has eliminated presidential term limits, effectively allowing him to rule over the nation indefinitely.

Xi now holds the most senior titles, simultaneously, of any leader in China's modern history, and his status as the Party's "core leader" evokes deep, almost spiritual admiration from citizens.

Still, the show faced major backlash on social media. On the microblogging platform Weibo, one user wrote that they were being "baptized" by the program's propaganda, according to Sixth Tone.

The show starts off with a bizarre title sequence — in space …

The five-episode series features contestants from the country's top universities, who answer multiple-choice questions in front of a studio audience of about 100 people.

… with clips of Xi's past speeches thrown into the mix.

The show follows Xi's previous calls for a "massive study" of Communist Party ideals.

The show features a humanoid robot who explains the rules and tries to stump contestants with questions.

There's a female announcer who interacts with her robot co-host.

China's state-run media says the show is supposed to be palatable to a younger audience.

"Through television and new media, this program is intended to guide Party members and young students to better comprehend the new thoughts, and to embrace each new year."

And a panel of experts, including university professors, provide extra insight into Xi's teachings.

The show includes speeches and interviews featuring Xi, referred to as "golden quotes," and players are asked to finish his sentences.

Participants are asked a wide range of questions about Xi and Communist teachings.

Contestants were also asked about Xi's upbringing, like this one: "When Xi was sent 'down to the countryside' of Shaanxi province as an educated youth during the Cultural Revolution, what book did he walk 15 kilometers to borrow?

Source: Sixth Tone

A digital version of Karl Marx made a guest appearance.

In the first episode, players were asked to finish quotes from the Communist Manifesto.

Videos glorifying Xi were the basis of many questions.

In a second segment of the show, participants were asked to interpret the meaning and inspiration behind some of Xi's most famous anecdotes.

The top two contestants make it to the final round of the competition …

… but there's no grand prize for the winner at the end of the show.

Rather, contestants and the studio audience get to show off their knowledge of communist principles and participate in a propaganda program neatly packaged as a game show.

Films We Are Excited About This Weekend

The weekend is upon us and if you are still wondering what movies to keep you entertained, we have got you covered. From the duo of Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish giving us something to laugh about in “Night School” to Lady Gaga starring in her biggest movie yet in “A Star Is Born” not to mention the Spiderman spinoff, “Venom”.

Below are the list of movies you should add to your watchlist and why we are so excited about them.

Night School | ELI-JOSHUA-ADE-UNIVERSAL-PICTURES

Night School

Release date:  September 28

Cast: Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish, Rob Riggle, Yvonne Orji

Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip)

Why we are excited: Following the success of last year’s box office dominating summer hit Girls Trip, award-winning comedian Tiffany Haddish is back on the big screen with Night School. She plays the character of a teacher charged with helping a high-school dropout (Kevin Hart) get his GED. The fact that we will get to see two stand-up stars at the peak of their powers play off each other in a movie like this makes it a must see.

A Star Is Born | IMDb

A Star Is Born

Release date: October 5

Cast: Bradley Cooper, Lady Gaga, Sam Elliott, Dave Chappelle

Directed by: Bradley Cooper

Why we are excited: This will be the fourth retelling of this iconic mash-up of fame, showbiz, and romance. A Star Is Born has a modern-day update, with Bradley Cooper playing the hard-living male lead and handling directing duties. Grammy award winning songstress, Lady Gaga plays a young singer with a big voice, who will likely be the draw for many moviegoers. You might want to hold a handkerchief to wipe away the tears if reviews out of the Venice Film Festival are anything to go by.

Venom | Sony Pictures

Venom

Release date: October 5

Cast: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson

Directed by: Ruben Fleischer (Gangster Squad)

Why we are excited: The early trailers for this movie has it as a long-rumored Spider-Man spinoff about investigative journalist Eddie Brock (Hardy) being infected by an inky substance from space and going crazy in the process. Even if this is a disaster, it will likely be stranger than some of the more streamlined superhero products released in recent years.
