Osinbajo: Nigeria developing Africa’s biggest ID database – Vice President

Osinbajo says you can now register that business for as low as N5,000

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government to every individual resident of India.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, says Nigeria’s ongoing digital identification of all citizens and legal residents on a harmonised platform will be the largest database in Africa and only second in the world to the Aadhaar of India.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government to every individual resident of India.

Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said Osinbajo made the disclosure in Lagos.

Osinbajo delivered  the keynote address on the “Technology As A Catalyst Conference (TAAC)’’, held in Lagos.

The vice president said the project would open a lot of opportunities in different sectors in Nigeria.

“From the enhanced ability to provide accurate analytic data for FinTech services, to content delivery services to individuals directly on the assurance of credible credentials, but perhaps more importantly, planning on human development education healthcare, and jobs for a population that will be the third largest in the world by 2050.

“A key deliverable of the Digital Identity Project is to develop updated international standard cybersecurity, data privacy and confidentiality policies to prepare us for the expected challenges that will come as part of a digital economy.

Osinbajo said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari understood the importance of a data-driven economy and had directed huge investments and focus to digitising government data.

According to  Osinbajo, the Federal Executive Council has approved the  “E-government Master Plan.

He said that the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with Galaxy Backbone, had commenced implementation of the interoperability framework that would provide a shared platform for the use of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

“I have no doubt the many proponents of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be excited about the immense data that will be available.

The vice president said the fundamental pillar of the Buhari administration’s economic plan was the lead role the private sector must play in business and commerce and the need to involve the sector in policy formulation.

“We realised that only real players in the technology space would be useful in policy formulation given the complexities of the sector, hence the establishment of the Technology and Creativity Advisory Group, which has the relevant regulatory agencies and industry players.

“While the public sector has been able to score points over the last two years through the implementation of technology-driven solutions, the award for the  “Most Valuable Player must go to our private industry leaders.

He said the technology industry had been Nigeria’s highest increasing employer and the most improved economy contributor.

“Nigerian corporations have been willing to dream big, to lead Nigeria’s technological revolution.

“The fact is that platforms needed to power the initiatives of the public sector have originated from our private sector partners.

“Thanks to Nigeria’s private sector innovators, living in Nigeria is increasingly becoming tech-based.

“On our smartphones, we can search for apartments, perform bank transactions, book a taxi, order food, buy clothes, invest in a joint farming venture, monitor traffic, book a flight, while learning an indigenous language, he said.

Vice President Osinbajo noted that the focus of this year’s TAAC Conference on the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria could not be more appropriate because both the public and private sectors have a role to play in driving economic development.

In his remark, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, said the private sector in Nigeria was willing to work with government, adding that the conference would be an avenue to cement the relationship between government and businesses.

Also speaking, the Secretary of Presidential Enabling Business Environment (PEBEC), Dr Jumoke Oduwole, said government at all levels would collaborate more with the private sector to work harder and faster to increase productivity.

She said leveraging on the power of innovation and creativity would get Nigeria to that desired place.

Earlier, Mr Osaro Eghobamien, who spoke on behalf of the organisers, said they would take the deliberations at the conference, monitor them and hold government accountable for what it said.

Politics: NATO invited the Russians to watch its massive war games because they really want Moscow to get the message

U.S. Marines with Amphibious Assault Vehicles (AAV) take a part in a landing operation during a military Exercise Baltops 2018

Senior NATO commander Adm. James Foggo says he wants Russia to come observe NATO's largest exercise in nearly two decades because he wants to make sure Moscow receives the intended "strong deterrence message."

  • Tens of thousands of troops from NATO allies and partners will join forces for joint military exercises from October 25 to November 7 in Norway.
  • Russia has been invited to observe the upcoming Trident Juncture drills for increased transparency, as well as to ensure the intended deterrence message is received in Moscow, a senior NATO commander revealed Friday.

NATO allies and a handful of partner countries are gearing up for the alliance's largest joint military exercises in decades.

Ahead of the Trident Juncture exercises, which are expected to include 45,000 troops, 10,000 vehicles, 60 ships, and 150 aircraft from 31 countries training side by side in and around Norway this fall, the alliance is stressing strength and transparency, and just invited Russian observers so they can get the message up close.

The US Navy admiral commanding the exercise hopes Russia will take them up on the offer.

"I fully expect that they'll want to come. It's in their interests to come and see what we do," Admiral James Foggo told reporters at the Pentagon Friday, "They'll learn things. I want them to be there so they can see how well [NATO allies and partners] work together."

"There's a strong deterrent message here that will be sent," he said. "They are going to see that we are very good at what we do, and that will have a deterrent effect on any country that might want to cross those borders, but especially for one nation in particular."

So far, Russia has yet to accept the offer.

The drills, Article 5 (collective defense) exercises, will include land, air, and amphibious assets training to repel an adversary threatening the sovereignty of a NATO ally or partner state. The admiral refused to comment on whether or not the exercise would include a nuclear element, as an earlier Russian drill did.

Although it was previously reported that these exercises are the largest NATO drills since the Cold War, they are actually the biggest since 2002, Foggo clarified at Friday's briefing. The allied drills come on the heels of massive war games in eastern Russia involving tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of Russian and Chinese troops preparing for large-scale military operations against an unspecified third country.

The purpose of Trident Juncture, according to handouts presented at Friday's briefing, is "to ensure that NATO forces are trained, able to operate together, and ready to respond to any threat from any direction."

#WorldTeachersDay: Your labour of love is appreciated – Lanlehin

LanlehinSenator Olufemi Lanlehin (SOLAN), governorship aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has felicitated with teachers in Oyo State as they join their counterparts the world over, in celebrating the 2018 World Teachers Day.

Senator Lanlehin, while appreciating the dedication, tenacity and hardwork teachers put into making their students better off, promised them a return to the glorious days of yore wherein their welfare and capacity development is the centrepiece of governance.

A statement made available to Tribune Online by his media assistant, Mr Damola Adeoye, affirmed that the Lanlehin is set to prioritise the welfare of teachers when he clinches the number seat in the state.

“Recalling how teachers in Oyo State benefitted immensely from the administrations of Alh Lam Adesina and Senator Rasidi Ladoja, Senator Lanlehin laments the current state of things wherein teachers who had laboured passionately are then owed salaries, while those retired are owed gratuities and pensions running into months, thus incapacitating them from performing their socioeconomic roles as responsible members of the society.

“This same ugly trend is noticed in the tertiary institutions whose staffers are owed cumulatively, over two years in salaries by the current APC government in the state.

“He however promised them, that the ADC government to be enthroned by the Oyo State people come 2019, would prioritise the welfare of teachers, workers and the entire citizenry, through policies and programmes that will improve their living standards, thereby making Oyo State great again.

“Senator Lanlehin wishes all teachers in Oyo State, a happy World Teachers Day, it read.

Apple shares dropped Friday afternoon after CNBC reported the hedge fund billionaire David Einhorn told clients in an investor letter that he sold the stock amid concerns of an escalating trade war between the US and China.

"We ultimately sold because our differentiated thesis from 2011 has become consensus," Einhorn, the founder and president of Greenlight Capital wrote in his third-quarter letter to investors, obtained by CNBC. "We are somewhat worried about Chinese retaliation against America's trade policies."

After selling 77% of its stake last quarter, Greenlight sold the remaining stake on August 31 for $228 worth $40 million, CNBC reported.

Apple shares was down as much as 3.2% following the news before paring their losses.

The announcement comes one day after Bloomberg reported Chinese spies implanted tiny chips in some of the company's server motherboards that ended up being sold to firms including Amazon and Apple. The goal was reportedly to use the microchips to gain access to sensitive corporate data and other secrets through advanced hacking.

Apple issued an unequivocal denial to the Bloomberg report. In a statement released Thursday afternoon, Apple said the company had never found any "malicious chips" or vulnerabilities in "any server" and denied having any contact with the "FBI or any other agency about such an incident" — directly contradicting several key claims in the report.

Apple shares were up 29% this year.

PDP Presidential Primary: This group tells PDP delegates that Tambuwal is the man to hand Buhari a beating

Group says Tambuwal is the man to hand Buhari a bloody nose

A group has told PDP delegates that Aminu Tambuwal is the man who can beat Buhari in the general election.

Ahead of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary election slated for the weekend of October 6-7, a group which calls itself the Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Support Group (AWTSG) has urged delegates to hand the Sokoto governor the votes he requires to clinch the flagbearer ticket.

In an open letter to the delegates, AWTSG said the “PDP cannot afford to have a candidate that can be thoroughly harassed and blackmailed to succumb by the desperate Buhari administration", adding that the party has a golden opportunity to retire Buhari if Tambuwal is handed the PDP ticket.

“We realise that the decision on our party’s flag-bearer is not an easy one to make but one that must be made with all the seriousness that it demands.

"We have no doubt that a number of our party aspirants are qualified to be president of this country but given the key issues on ground, we cannot but put our best foot forward and this letter hopes to convince you with these reasons why our man should fly this great party’s flag, the letter added.

A list of big name contestants

The PDP's long list of aspirants contesting the party's presidential ticket includes Senate President, Bukola Saraki; former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar; Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal; Gombe State Governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo; and former Governors Sule Lamido, Ahmed Makarfi, Attahiru Bafarawa, Jonah Jang and Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Others are former Senate President, David Mark, former Senator, Baba Datti Ahmed, and former Minister Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs, Tanimu Turaki.

The PDP delegates convention will be staged in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

Nigeria heads to the ballot to elect a President in February of 2019.

Spokesman of the CBN spokesman, Isaac Okorafor, who disclosed this at its meeting in Lagos, said the mobile courts in collaboration with the police would be deployed nationwide to try those abusing the currency, including those mutilating or defacing the Naira notes by using them as writing pads

“If you want to give, put the money in an envelop, and give it the celebrant. Let’s know that anybody hawking and writing on the naira will face six months in jail or N50,000 or both, he said.

Osinbajo: Vice President tasks public, private sectors to boost economy through technology

Nigeria grants 90-day special window for business registration at a lower rate

Osinbajo made this known during a conference organised by Perchstone and Graeys, Knowledge and Resources Ltd. in Lagos.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday said that both public and private sectors had a big role to play in using technology to boost the economy of the country.

Osinbajo made this known during a conference organised by Perchstone and Graeys, Knowledge and Resources Ltd. in Lagos.

The theme of the conference was: “Technology as a Catalyst: Ease of Doing Business 2018’’.

“The greater responsibility of using technology to boost the economy obviously lies in the hands of the public sector.

“The key to this greater new world is collaboration and this is the rationale for the establishment of the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC).

“PEBEC is a forum where private and public sectors can collaborate with the objective of removing delays and restrictions that come with doing business in Nigeria,’’ the vice president said.

Osinbajo said that the country would be made a place where an entrepreneur could start, sustain and grow a business.

He said that the PEBEC had also formulated and introduced initiatives relying on technology to reduce the time taken to obtain approvals, pre-investment registration and effective internal and external trade processes.

The vice president noted that PEBEC was not the only mechanism adopted, saying that government had been able to reposition Nigeria as an important player in the world.

“Our agencies, ministries and departments and even some state governments have been able to reduce operational cost, corruption, revitalisation of investments in numerous sectors of the economy, using technology.

“The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for instance, successfully gained access to automate the majority of the services and processes, which resulted into reducing the stress involved in recovering and filing corporate taxes from 14 days to 72 hours.

“The National Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has just recently been able to clear a backlog of over 5,000 outstanding NAFDAC applications using technology solutions.

“This is critical, especially for small and medium scale businesses, which held for so long without being registered.

“Also the energy sector through the introduction of electronic application, approval of new connection of power have been made easy and time spent on connections have reduced by 147 per cent,’’ Osinbajo said .

The vice president said that through the implementation of modern web-enabled national collateral register, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) aggregated over 530 financial institutions with over 30,000 finances and statements valued at almost N630 billion.

“I am also sure that some of you have also heard about the operations of the biggest ongoing government technology programme – the digital identification of all citizens and legal residents on a harmonised platform.

“Very soon, Nigeria will have the largest digital base in Africa and that will be second only to the India identification system, ‘’ he said.
