Finance: UBS: 'Buy low, sell high' is a fallacy

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

It's much better to just buy stocks whenever and hold them for the long-term, according to UBS' Justin Waring, the Investment Strategist Americas in the Chief Investment Office of the Wealth Management division.

  • "Buy low, sell high" is a common mantra in stock markets.
  • But it's actually a "fallacy", argues UBS' Justin Waring.
  • If you wait for the market to dip before buying in, you could miss out on big bull runs.
  • It's much better to just buy stock and hold it for the long-term, he argues.

"'This time is different' is not the most dangerous phrase in finance," according to UBS' Justin Waring. "That honor goes to 'buy low, sell high.'"

Waring, Investment Strategist Americas in the Chief Investment Office of UBS' Wealth Management division, called the phrase a "fallacy" in a note sent to clients this week. Not enough people analyze the phrase, which really only applies to traders and doesn't offer much help to long-term investors.

The persistence of bull markets means investors who follow this advice may miss out on market gains, Waring argues.

For example, imagine an investor buys a dip in the S&P 500 and then sells once it hits a new record high. Under the 'buy low, sell high' mantra, that investor would generally have to wait for a 5% or 10% dip in the market to buy back in. But, more often than not, the market goes on to post new record highs after setting one record.

Waring uses data on the S&P 500 stretching back to 1960 to back up his argument.

"These market-timing approaches' 2.5% p.a. returns are so dismal – and lag "buy-and-hold" so badly – that we had to switch to a logarithmic scale to even see them on the chart," Waring writes.

"The core problem with waiting for a market drop, and selling out at new all-time highs, is that you're invested during the bulk of each bear market but miss out on most of the bull market gains."

Much better to simply buy stock and hold it for the long term, Waring said, as the chart below illustrates.

See The Moving Car A Nigerian Student Invented With Slippers And Broomsticks

Nigerians are forever innovating and giving reasons why we can easily become a technologically-advanced society.

A student of Anglican Grammar school Ogbomoso has designed a car using slippers and broomsticks. That is not all, the car is powered by a power bank which was developed by the student.

He has been placed on a scholarship up till his university level by an alumnus.

Recall that in August, a team of five students (Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo and Vivian Okoye) codenamed the Save A Soul team from Regina Pacis Secondary School Onitsha in Anambra State, became global champions in the junior division (App focus) category at the Technovation Challenge in Silicon Valley, California, USA after developing a mobile application called the FD Detector which detects fake drugs.

We hope that this rising star is recognised by the government and is put to good use in the Nigerian society.

Politics: 2 Supreme Court justices who will soon share the bench with Brett Kavanaugh spoke about partisanship on the high court

Elena Kagan Sonia Sotomayor Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan spoke about partisanship and bias as it relates to their jobs on the nation's highest court. Sotomayor said it's important for justices to "rise above" their personal biases while on the bench.

  • Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan gave remarks about their experiences on the nation's highest court, and talked specifically about the idea of political bias on the bench.
  • Justice Sotomayor said "we have to rise above partisanship in our personal relationships."
  • Sotomayor spoke broadly about how Supreme Court justices need to always rise above the political fray for the sake of the court's integrity, and said that the effort begins with how justices interact with each other.
  • "We have to treat each other with respect and dignity, and with a sense of amicability that the rest of the world doesn’t often share," she said.
  • That conversation is happening in the backdrop of what has been a tumultuous vetting process for their likely future colleague, Brett Kavanaugh, who is expected to be confirmed to the court after weeks of sexual-misconduct allegations that culminated in a public outburst during which Kavanaugh attacked Democrats.

Supreme Court justices Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan gave remarks about their experiences on the nation's highest court, and talked specifically about the idea of political bias on the bench.

"There are structures within the court — not the least of which is our modern understanding among what are now eight justices — that we have to rise above partisanship in our personal relationships," Justice Sotomayor said at Princeton University on Friday.

Sotomayor spoke broadly about how Supreme Court justices need to always rise above the political fray for the sake of the court's integrity, and said that effort begins with how justices treat each other.

"We have to treat each other with respect and dignity, and with a sense of amicability that the rest of the world doesn’t often share," Sotomayor said.

That conversation is happening in the backdrop of what has been a tumultuous vetting process for their likely future colleague, Brett Kavanaugh, who is expected to be confirmed to the court this weekend.

Kavanaugh's confirmation comes after weeks of sexual-misconduct allegations that culminated in a hearing in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 27.

During that hearing, Kavanaugh publicly denied a claim from Christine Blasey Ford, a California professor who said Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her. He also launched into an attack on Democrats.

In his remarks, Kavanaugh accused Democratic senators on the Judiciary Committee of seeking revenge "on behalf of the Clintons," and acting out of "pent-up anger about President Trump and the 2016 election."

Kavanaugh sought to walk back some of that emotion in a Wall Street Journal opinion column he published on Thursday.

Tambuwal, Atiku others contend for PDP presidential ticket

Atiku Abubakar

• Wike Assures Delegates Of Adequate Security
Ahead of today’s Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential primary election, the winning pendulum, as at yesterday, appeared to be swinging between the Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal and former Vice President Abubakar Atiku.

This is just as Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike assured all delegates for the party’s national convention holding at the Adokiye Amasiemaka Stadium in Port Harcourt between today and tomorrow of adequate security, saying he was working with the security agencies and other stakeholders to ensure they have a memorable stay in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
In a statement signed by his Special Assistant on Electronic Media, Simeon Nwakaudu, the governor welcomed the delegates to the state, assuring them of a remarkable stay in the state.

There were also indications that Gombe State Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo, former Jigawa State governor, Sule Lamido, and former senate president, Senator David Mark, might step down for Tambuwal. A source in the party told The Guardian that today’s primaries will be another reminder of the “purely selfish, Darwinian nature of Nigerian politics. He explained that Tambuwal would be getting the support of most of the PDP governors, because they seem more comfortable with him.

According to him, if Tambuwal is able to pick up 60 per cent of the governors’ vote, then he will contend favourably with Atiku. “With that, you need to put like 10 northern states’ delegates together to match the kind of delegates one particular South-South state will have, and then the states will still have one delegate each from every local government area. You see, the PDP-controlled states have more delegates and that is where the PDP governors become very strong.

“It looks like this race is a race between Atiku and Tambuwal, if the governors conspire which, and I think they will do, they will pick Tambuwal. But if the aspirants can come together and Bukola Saraki collapses his structure, David Mark and Dankwambo, then Atiku will win, he said.

The Guardian gathered that there has been intense lobby of delegates, particularly those that are not controlled by the PDP. The various lobby groups have been moving round the hotels in Port Harcourt and suburbs in a bid to sway delegates, who started arriving Port Harcourt since Thursday.A source close to one of the aspirants hinted The Guardian that the reason why there was desperation to control the hotels was to have access to delegates, as “knowing where the delegates are, where to buy them, is the big deal.

The source said though the governors were disposed towards Tambuwal, it was gathered that the National Chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, wants a candidate that could win the presidential election for the party.

“Secondus wants to win, he wants a candidate that can win for him. He knows Tambuwal will be a bit of problem when it comes to the general election itself. “For instance, Tambuwal is popular in Sokoto, but he is not an idol, people are not frantic about him.Wike, while assuring of security, said: “As we gather for this all-important national convention, I assure all delegates of our great party of their security before, during and after the convention. We are working with the security agencies and other stakeholders. We will ensure that your stay in Port Harcourt is memorable.

“The good people of Rivers State are most delighted and honoured to play host to the distinguished national delegates as we elect our presidential flag-bearer and collectively work towards rescuing our nation from the brink of collapse.“Once again, I welcome all delegates, journalists, observers and other visitors to Rivers State, the Treasure Base of the nation. While you are here, enjoy the peace, love, cuisine, heritage and hospitality of Rivers State and her people.“I pray for journey mercies as you return to your respective destinations.

Osinbajo: Nigeria developing Africa’s biggest ID database – Vice President

Osinbajo says you can now register that business for as low as N5,000

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government to every individual resident of India.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, says Nigeria’s ongoing digital identification of all citizens and legal residents on a harmonised platform will be the largest database in Africa and only second in the world to the Aadhaar of India.

Aadhaar is a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Indian government to every individual resident of India.

Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Office of the Vice President, in a statement on Friday in Abuja, said Osinbajo made the disclosure in Lagos.

Osinbajo delivered  the keynote address on the “Technology As A Catalyst Conference (TAAC)’’, held in Lagos.

The vice president said the project would open a lot of opportunities in different sectors in Nigeria.

“From the enhanced ability to provide accurate analytic data for FinTech services, to content delivery services to individuals directly on the assurance of credible credentials, but perhaps more importantly, planning on human development education healthcare, and jobs for a population that will be the third largest in the world by 2050.

“A key deliverable of the Digital Identity Project is to develop updated international standard cybersecurity, data privacy and confidentiality policies to prepare us for the expected challenges that will come as part of a digital economy.

Osinbajo said that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari understood the importance of a data-driven economy and had directed huge investments and focus to digitising government data.

According to  Osinbajo, the Federal Executive Council has approved the  “E-government Master Plan.

He said that the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), in collaboration with Galaxy Backbone, had commenced implementation of the interoperability framework that would provide a shared platform for the use of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

“I have no doubt the many proponents of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be excited about the immense data that will be available.

The vice president said the fundamental pillar of the Buhari administration’s economic plan was the lead role the private sector must play in business and commerce and the need to involve the sector in policy formulation.

“We realised that only real players in the technology space would be useful in policy formulation given the complexities of the sector, hence the establishment of the Technology and Creativity Advisory Group, which has the relevant regulatory agencies and industry players.

“While the public sector has been able to score points over the last two years through the implementation of technology-driven solutions, the award for the  “Most Valuable Player must go to our private industry leaders.

He said the technology industry had been Nigeria’s highest increasing employer and the most improved economy contributor.

“Nigerian corporations have been willing to dream big, to lead Nigeria’s technological revolution.

“The fact is that platforms needed to power the initiatives of the public sector have originated from our private sector partners.

“Thanks to Nigeria’s private sector innovators, living in Nigeria is increasingly becoming tech-based.

“On our smartphones, we can search for apartments, perform bank transactions, book a taxi, order food, buy clothes, invest in a joint farming venture, monitor traffic, book a flight, while learning an indigenous language, he said.

Vice President Osinbajo noted that the focus of this year’s TAAC Conference on the Ease of Doing Business in Nigeria could not be more appropriate because both the public and private sectors have a role to play in driving economic development.

In his remark, Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah, said the private sector in Nigeria was willing to work with government, adding that the conference would be an avenue to cement the relationship between government and businesses.

Also speaking, the Secretary of Presidential Enabling Business Environment (PEBEC), Dr Jumoke Oduwole, said government at all levels would collaborate more with the private sector to work harder and faster to increase productivity.

She said leveraging on the power of innovation and creativity would get Nigeria to that desired place.

Earlier, Mr Osaro Eghobamien, who spoke on behalf of the organisers, said they would take the deliberations at the conference, monitor them and hold government accountable for what it said.
