Buhari: Unpaid Salaries: My heart is with you, President tells teachers

President Muhammadu Buhari's party has seen a wave of defections in protest at his leadership style and a surge in opposition PDP contenders that could give it momentum

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said Buhari gave the assurance in a message to this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigeria’s Teachers that his heart is with them over the issue of unpaid salaries, assuring that unpaid salaries would soon become an issue of the past.

The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said Buhari gave the assurance in a message to this year’s World Teachers’ Day.

The President disclosed that he was aware that in some states and local councils of the federation, teachers were being owed salaries of several months.

He revealed that it was specifically to mitigate the situation of unpaid teachers and pensioners that his administration doled out billions of naira as bailout funds to various states.

“Sadly, the issue of unpaid salaries remains,’’ he lamented.

Buhari, however, assured that the Federal Government would continue to work with the state governments to ensure that “all salary arrears are not just cleared, but that unpaid salaries become an issue of the past.’’

The President used the opportunity of this year’s World Teachers’ Day to express his appreciation to all Nigeria’s teachers, “the usually unsung heroes of our country whose skill and commitment daily mould the minds of our country’s youth, our leaders of today and tomorrow.’’

While highlighting some of the measures put in place by his administration to improve education and better the welfare of teachers, Buhari regretted as “grave and unfortunate that the country’s teachers were often treated unfairly despite their essential services.

According to him, Teachers are the most important segment of workers in the country, invaluable for the essential work they do towards building the country’s future.

He said: “Teaching is a noble profession, wielding a strong influence by inspiring and educating our children. The values they inculcate stay with them for a lifetime.’’

Did Major Lazer Boycott Wizkid? Some Guests Were Unhappy After The Concert

Last night, popular three-member production and disc jockey group Major Lazer gave their first Nigerian headline performance in a festival-esque event dubbed ‘Major Lazer Soundsystem Live’ as part of their ongoing African tour which has taken them to South Africa and Malawi.

At exactly 12:45 am, the trio made an entrance, receiving praises from fans who had been waiting all night. The trio took turns on the turntable, stimulated guests and spun heads throughout their one-hour set,  performing a slew of local and international hits, mixing, bending, speeding up the pace and hyping fans all at the same time. Some Wizkid stans who were present at the event, however, took into account, the fact that no Wizkid record was slammed throughout their set.

As we all made our way out of the venue after the exhilarating show, an unhappy fan of the Starboy began to vent. “So Major Lazer get mind perform for Lagos without playing one Wizkid song. Asin, out of all those many many songs wey dem play, them no jam one Wizkid song (Translated from Pidgin: So Major Lazer had the gut to perform in Lagos without playing any Wizkid record. How could they have played so many songs without slamming at least one song by Wizkid)”, he lamented.

To better articulate his sentiment, how could the group have done a concert in Lagos that saw them perform an array of songs, featured and non-featured without playing at least a song by arguably Africa’s biggest pop star? Sort of like; how do you explain coming to Wizkid’s home without acknowledging him?

The disgruntled fan went on to express his displeasure over the fact that the Starboy also made no appearance at the event despite haven worked with the group in recent years. “Upon say Wizkid don do official song with them, they still no play him song”, he opined. On a song titled Naughty Ride off his 2017 Sounds From The Other Side album, Wizkid enlisted the contribution of the EDM group.

Also to the surprise of many, Nigerian international pop star, Skales was the only guest who got to share the stage with the EDM group, performing a verse from his African remix of their 2017 smash hit ‘Run Up’.

Major Lazer has recently dropped three singles (Tied Up ft Mr Eazi, Loyal ft Kizz Daniel and All My Life ft Burna Boy) and a number of guests came hoping to see a guest performance from one of their recent Nigerian collaborators. The absence of guest performances is proof that the EDM group came to deliver a ‘Major Lazer Experience’ and this was well executed.

Ambode’s press conference and the Lagos APC primaries; President Buhari’s Independence Day speech and 5 things we learnt and other stories that made headlines this week

These are the stories that drove conversation this week.

This week began with the governor of Lagos, Akinwunmi Ambode holding a World Press Conference where he spewed some negative things against his opponent in the governorship race, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

This might have prompted the National Leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola ‘Jagaban’ Tinubu to immediately release a statement formally endorsing Sanwo-Olu.

In reaction to Ambode, Sanwo-Olu said the tension and anxiety of the moment got the better of him. Probably why singer, Olamide openly declared support for him (Ambode). Sanwo-Olu added that he forgives him.

As the primaries went on, Ambode’s deputy shifted sides. Idiat Adebule did not explicitly declare support for her principal, she said she will go on with whatever the party decides.

Sanwo-Olu eventually emerged winner of the primaries with a very wide margin. Ambode congratulated him and pledged to support him.

President Muhammadu Buhari accepted the resignation of his minister, Aisha Alhassan, who resigned dishing out allegations of impunity against the APC. She also said she doesn’t quite understand how or why she was disqualified from the governorship race.

Alhassan has since moved — with a lot of APC faithful — to UDP and won the party’s governorship ticket for 2019.

As is the tradition on the occasion of Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary, President Buhari delivered a speech, asking Nigerians not to continue in the footsteps of “disruptive forces” and that security has indeed improved in highly terrorised areas.

Read five things we learnt from the speech here.

We still await formal declaration, if there will be any, but Overseer of the Latter Rain Assembly, Pastor Tunde Bakare said former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili will be contesting in 2019.

Still on contestants in 2019, 75-year-old Senator (Plateau South), Jeremiah Useni emerged the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

Then, in an unexpected manner, though with clear explanation, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce (Bayelsa East) withdrew from his re-elction bid.

Also, a familiar candidate in Lagos governorship elections, Jimi Agbaje, emerged as the flagbearer of the PDP, beating his opponent, Deji Doherty, with 1,100 to 742 votes.

The governor-elect of Osun, Adegboyega Oyetola, was handed the certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

But some leaders of the opposition PDP led by Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the National Chairman, Uche Secondus, marched to INEC office, asking the electoral body to declare PDP candidate, Ademola Adeleke winner of the Osun governorship election.

After weeks of Boko Haram threat to kill Leah Sharibu — last remaining abducted schoolgirl from Dapchi — President Buhari called her mother, Rebecca Sharibu assuring her that the “Federal Government would do its utmost best for the safety and security of their daughter.”

News channel, CNN published a feature story on sex slavery in Paris, detailing how Nigerian girls are being promised paradise but are forced into all kinds of sexual abuse and sometimes left to die on the streets.

The report focused on a particular popular park in Paris. Read the full story here.

President Buhari met with nine governors of the APC amidst chaotic primaries all over the country.

The governor of Imo, Rochas Okorocha came out of the meeting saying, “we came to review the various crises…we are going to find solution, out party believes in justice, equity and fairness.

In the same vein, the governors expressed dissatisfaction with the party’s National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole over the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) to subtly offer automatic tickets to some returning lawmakers in the National Assembly.

The APC released a list of governorship candidates ahead of the deadline.

The Acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Yekini Nabena disclosed this in a statement on the party’s website.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has warned citizens to desist from “bastardising” the national currency – Naira – or risk going to jail for about six months or be made to pay a fine of N50,000.

It added that people selling Naira notes are liable too.

Major Lazer: Diplo, Jillionaire and Walshy Fire deliver a night of EDM brilliance at Lagos concert

In the early hours of Saturday morning, October 6, Major Lazer closed their U-Live Lagos concert waving the Nigeria flag high in the skies. We didn't plant it over the moon but it sure felt like it.

While this is not exactly Major Lazer's first visit to Nigeria with Diplo performing in the rains at the 2017 edition of the Gidifest, the Major Lazer Soundsystem Live is however the group's debut headline event in Lagos, the city that never sleeps.

The venue was the beach grounds of the Hardrock Cafe in Victoria Island, Lagos and there was excitement in the air, the feeling of something special lurking in the nights and the good cheer as the fans gathered in their munbers.

The stage backdrop and lighting was quite maginificent and even though sound on few occcassions wavered, it was good enough for a world class event.

A number of Nigerian DJ's opened up the night alongside one of the hosts Bollylomo, as the combination of DJ Aye, Sensei Lo and CaliX showed that EDM mixes was fast catching up in Nigeria.

The matchup of DJ Crowd Kontroller and D.O.T.U.N was electrifying, next was DJ Smallz who livened things up with his crew, while producer Pheelz alongside Guitarist Femi Leye teamed up to synth perfection.

Next was the turn of DJ Consequence, who delivered a largely Nigerian mix with the third host Nenny B having the floor, while Xclusive dished out both old and new songs from local and foreign acts, even though he barely allowed any of the songs last beyond a few seconds.

There was a brief moment immediately after for Sound Sultan and Korede Bello alongside one of the organizers to sensitize the crowd on the importance of participating peacefully in the upcoming elections.

Taking to the stage

A few minutes passed midnight witnessed the arrival of Major Lazer on stage, there was no need for any grand build-up to their entrance, the fans was hyped for it.

The international EDM group, Major Lazer comprising of DJs/Producers Diplo, The Jillionaire and Walshy Fire are well renowned for their ability to infuse different genres into a wholesome sound that becomes the life of the party and this famed 'legend' is what the Lagos crowd had gathered to put to test.

Diplo and Walshy Fire took to the front stage, while the third and more silent member, Jillionaire settled at the wheels of steel.

Diplo was like a beast unleashed, climbing unto the DJ stand, hyping up the crowd and from the get-go, Major Lazer never faltered all through their over one hour set.

The group dished out  a set of old, some new, and but a large number of EDM interpretations of familiar songs from other artists and also tracks from their catalogue, finding a brilliant mix between songs with African artistes and their international hits.

Songs like 'Leg Over remix', 'Run Up' which features Skales, and had him joining them on stage for his verse, alongside singles from their recently released ''Afrobeats Mix'' including 'All My Lights' with Burna Boy, 'Tied Up' with Mr Eazi and more made their playlist.

The set closed out with Major Lazer performing their major African hit single 'Particular', which features Nasty C, Ice Prince and Jidenna.

It was a night when the trio highlighted the act of performing on stage as a disc jockey at a higher level, outside the minor disappointment of not seeing some of the Nigerian stars they have worked with join them on stage, this was a splendid showing from the group.

Towards the end of their set, there was the Nigerian flag on stage as they waved it high, preaching peace, love and unity.

The energy levels was high all night, the skill on display was a joy to behold, providing a very bright performance on a dark night.

While the night witnessed more mixes than performances, Major Lazer have proven that they were more than just disc jockeys or entertainers, they are indeed the complete package.

Finance: UBS: 'Buy low, sell high' is a fallacy

Traders work on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).

It's much better to just buy stocks whenever and hold them for the long-term, according to UBS' Justin Waring, the Investment Strategist Americas in the Chief Investment Office of the Wealth Management division.

  • "Buy low, sell high" is a common mantra in stock markets.
  • But it's actually a "fallacy", argues UBS' Justin Waring.
  • If you wait for the market to dip before buying in, you could miss out on big bull runs.
  • It's much better to just buy stock and hold it for the long-term, he argues.

"'This time is different' is not the most dangerous phrase in finance," according to UBS' Justin Waring. "That honor goes to 'buy low, sell high.'"

Waring, Investment Strategist Americas in the Chief Investment Office of UBS' Wealth Management division, called the phrase a "fallacy" in a note sent to clients this week. Not enough people analyze the phrase, which really only applies to traders and doesn't offer much help to long-term investors.

The persistence of bull markets means investors who follow this advice may miss out on market gains, Waring argues.

For example, imagine an investor buys a dip in the S&P 500 and then sells once it hits a new record high. Under the 'buy low, sell high' mantra, that investor would generally have to wait for a 5% or 10% dip in the market to buy back in. But, more often than not, the market goes on to post new record highs after setting one record.

Waring uses data on the S&P 500 stretching back to 1960 to back up his argument.

"These market-timing approaches' 2.5% p.a. returns are so dismal – and lag "buy-and-hold" so badly – that we had to switch to a logarithmic scale to even see them on the chart," Waring writes.

"The core problem with waiting for a market drop, and selling out at new all-time highs, is that you're invested during the bulk of each bear market but miss out on most of the bull market gains."

Much better to simply buy stock and hold it for the long term, Waring said, as the chart below illustrates.

Finance: UBS: 'Buy low, sell high' is a fallacy
