Embattled Ronaldo prepares to play for Juventus

Cristiano Ronaldo is ready to play for Juventus against Udinese on Saturday, despite rape claims made against him, although his coach Massimiliano Allegri admits he may be tempted to rest the embattled star.

The Portuguese superstar has travelled with the Italian champions to play at Udine, a small town in northeastern Italy on the border with Slovenia, in a match kicking off at 1600 GMT.

US police on Monday re-opened an investigation into accusations by former American model Kathryn Mayorga that the former five-time Ballon d’Or winner raped her in a Las Vegas hotel in June 2009.

“Ronaldo is doing well, he is ready to play. His professionalism and his composure on and off the pitch are not in question,” Allegri said Friday.

“I could go with a front three of Mario Mandzukic, Paulo Dybala and Cristiano Ronaldo, or alternatively one of them could be rested,” he added.

The Italian sports press predicted on Saturday that the match against Udinese, lying 14th in Serie A, could be the most difficult of the season for Juventus, who are looking for a tenth straight win in all competitions.

“Stronger than the mud,” headlined Turin daily Tuttosport, a traditional backer of Juventus, above a photograph of Ronaldo dining with the team, and a bigger picture of the star smiling.

“CRSexe,” was the front-page headline on Rome-based Corriere dello Sport, referring to the allegations. Another headline said “World of Juve shaken” after the club’s share price plunged almost 10 percent on Friday.

The back page was covered in an advert for Ronaldo’s line of underwear.

Ronaldo, 33, has strenuously denied the accusations and has hired David Chesnoff, known as the lawyer of the stars, to defend him.

The Las Vegas-based criminal lawyer has already worked with well-known athletes like Shaquille O’Neal, Mike Tyson and Andre Agassi.

After initially dismissing the accusations as “fake news” on Instagram, the former Real Madrid player took to social media during the week to “firmly deny” the accusations.

“Rape is an abominable crime that goes against everything that I am and believe in,” he said on his Twitter feed, which has 75 million followers.

Sponsors concerned
However, there have been off-field consequences to the controversy.

Just two weeks ago, shares in Juventus rose 180 percent to a record level of over 1.80 euros. On Friday, they closed down 9.92 percent at 1.19 euros on the Milan stock exchange.

Nike has said it is “deeply concerned” by the allegations against one of their marquee athletes whose relationship with the US sportswear giant is rumoured to be worth $1 billion (869 million euros).

“We are deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation,” a Nike spokesman said.

According to Forbes magazine, Ronaldo is one of only three athletes to have been given a lifetime deal with Nike, joining an elite club that also includes NBA icons LeBron James and Michael Jordan.

EA Sports, for whom Ronaldo is a leading figure in their phenomenally successful FIFA video game market, also described the allegations as “concerning”.

“We are closely monitoring the situation, as we expect cover athletes and ambassadors to conduct themselves in a manner that is consistent with EA’s values,” the group said in a statement.

Juventus have so far stood behind Ronaldo, who moved to Turin in the summer in a 100 million euro ($115 million) deal from Real Madrid.

However, the Italian club’s reaction to the issue has angered some fans.

The Portuguese striker “has shown in recent months his great professionalism and dedication, which is appreciated by everyone at Juventus”, the club wrote on Twitter on Thursday, breaking their silence over the allegations.

“The events allegedly dating back to almost 10 years ago do not change this opinion, which is shared by anyone who has come into contact with this great champion.”

Juventus later posted a video on YouTube and Twitter showing their star celebrating a goal, with the caption: “Cristiano Ronaldo finds the target!”

The defending Serie A champions’ tweets were widely panned on social media as “dismissive” and “insensitive”.

Politics: 7 Democratic women to watch in 2020

If she runs, Sen. Elizabeth Warren would be a front-runner for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination.

The enthusiasm behind Democratic women running for office could help launch a female candidate to the top of the party's ticket in 2020.

  • The enthusiasm behind Democratic women running for office could help launch a female candidate to the top of the party's ticket in 2020.
  • The potential contenders include progressive firebrands like Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris and moderates like Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo.

Democratic women are running for office — and winning — in unprecedented numbers this year.

And the enthusiasm behind women candidates could help launch a female candidate to the top of the Democratic ticket in 2020.

They're being fueled by women voters, particularly college-educated women, who are leading a national backlash against President Donald Trump, spurred in part by the #MeToo movement against sexual assault and harassment.

And some pollsters say there's evidence that female candidates in Democratic primaries are benefiting from an intense desire among Democratic voters to elect women.

In May, Dave Wasserman of the non-partisan Cook Political Report looked at the 65 House Democratic primaries (without incumbents) that featured at least one man and one woman and found that the female candidates defeated their male opponents in 45 of those races. Wasserman chalked this up to a 15% "gender bonus."

"2018 might be remembered as the 'Year of the Angry College-Educated Female,'" he wrote.

Here are seven Democratic women to look out for in 2020:

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren

The former law professor would likely be the Democratic frontrunner should she launch a 2020 bid. She's a national leader of the progressive left-wing of the party with a strong fundraising operation — and she'll likely win reelection to the Senate this fall in a landslide.

During a September event in Holyoke, Massachusetts, Warren gave her clearest indication yet that she'll run in 2020.

"It's time for women to go to Washington and fix our broken government and that includes a woman at the top. So here's what I promise: after November 6, I will take a hard look at running for president," she said to an extended standing ovation.

But the senator must also contend with what her constituents want her to do. Recent polling in Warren's home state found that a majority of Massachusetts voters don't want her to run for the presidency, despite approving of her work in the Senate.

California Sen. Kamala Harris

Related content

The freshman California senator — the second black woman ever elected to the US Senate —has gained notoriety since she was elected in 2016 as a tough opponent of the Trump administration. Clips of her grilling Trump administration officials, including Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, have helped her build a national following.

But while Harris has embraced the party's leftward shift on issues like single-payer healthcare and reforming the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency, the former California attorney general is is viewed as too cozy with the establishment for some on the left.

New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand

The former centrist congresswoman from upstate New York was appointed to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate in 2009 and has since been reelected by wide margins on a deeply progressive platform.

Gillibrand has consistently been one of the first national Democrats to sign on to populist progressive policies like a federal jobs guarantee, Medicare-for-all, and abolishing ICE.

A longtime champion of victims of sexual assault and harassment, Gillibrand made headlines last year when she led the charge in pressuring Sen. Al Franken, the Minnesota Democrat accused by multiple women of groping and other sexual misconduct, to retire from the Senate. She has since become one of Washington's most influential advocates for the #MeToo movement.

While Gillibrand is one of the party's strongest fundraisers, her ideological evolution from a more conservative congresswomen to the most liberal senator in Washington could hurt her in a presidential race.

Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar

The Minnesota lawmaker is known for being progressive but practical — and a bit more moderate than other potential 2020 contenders. She's also less nationally known than other potential 2020 candidates, but she's very popular in her home state.

As Vox pointed out recently, Klobuchar has a 60% approval rating in a state Clinton won by just two points in 2016, giving her the largest margin between her approval rating and the partisan lean of the state of any US senator.

Klobuchar has proven that she can appeal to white working-class voters without compromising much on progressive policy goals — something many Democrats will see as a strength in challenging Trump.

Stacey Abrams

The former Georgia House Minority Leader is now running to become the country's first-ever black female governor.

While her government experience is limited to Georgia state politics, Abrams has already developed national name-recognition and a powerful grassroots fundraising network. She has also received high-profile support from 2020 potentials, including Gillibrand, Harris, Sen. Cory Booker, and former Vice President Joe Biden, and the senators are all planning to travel south to campaign with her this fall.

If the 44-year-old progressive Democrat beats her right-wing Republican opponent in the gubernatorial race, she will have proven that she can beat a Trumpian candidate and expand the Democratic electorate — and could be presidential (or perhaps more likely vice presidential) material.

Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo

Raimondo — one of only six female governors in the country — is best known for her business-focused governance and championing of regulatory and tax reform, job creation, and worker re-training in her small blue state.

The Rhodes scholar, with an economics degree from Harvard and law degree from Yale, made a name for herself in the finance industry, founding Rhode Island's first venture-capital firm.

While her single-minded focus on the economy has put her somewhat at odds with the leftward moving Democratic base, her appeal among white blue-collar and business-minded moderate voters could make her an attractive pick for 2020.

Oprah Winfrey

The much-beloved media mogul got many Democrats' — and even Republicans' — hopes up earlier this year when she delivered a powerful Golden Globes speech, weaving stories of racial and gender injustice into a hopeful, forward-looking narrative that many thought read like a political stump speech.

While Winfrey said last January that she hadn't yet considered the possibility of a presidential bid, she didn't completely rule it out (although she said in July a bid "would kill" her).

It's unclear exactly what Winfrey's politics are, but she was a strong supporter of Barack Obama's presidential campaigns and endorsed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016.

Winfrey's overwhelming popularity, celebrity status, and history-making potential would undoubtedly make her a formidable alternative to Trump.

El-Rufai blasts PDP over controversial comment

Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, has taken a swipe at the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) over a controversial comment.

The comment, which was attributed to el-Rufai tends to fuel the controversies trailing the decision of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to grant automatic return ticket to a senator, Shehu Sani.

A twitter handle identified as PDP Vanguard said the governor had accused the national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, of colluding with former president Olusegun Obasanjo to stop increment of worker’s minimum wage.

The handle also claimed that the Kaduna State governor promised to  “deal with” Oshiomhole if an automatic ticket is given to Senator Shehu Sani as APC’s senatorial candidate.

While reacting to the comment, he knocked the PDP and the author of the fake news calling them ‘purveyors of falsehood’.

“PDP is already cursed! May Allah curse and expose the wendell simlins, the authors of the fake news and similar purveyors of falsehood nationwide. Amen,”el-Rufai tweeted.

The decision by the APC to clear Sani as its only candidate to contest the Kaduna Central senatorial seat, as seen the Kaduna State Government and its officials continue to condemn the decision and on Friday evening claimed it had been reversed.

But despite after el-Rufai’s meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday, it appears that the controversy was still on.

El-Rufai told journalists that the leadership of the APC was insisting on an automatic ticket for Sani.

However, hours later, a close ally to El-Rufai, Uba Sani, released a statement saying he and some other aspirants had been cleared by the APC headquarters to challenge Shehu Sani for the senatorial ticket.

Arsenal can cope with hectic schedule, insists Emery

Unai Emery insists Arsenal won’t be allowed to use their hectic schedule as an excuse for a poor performance when they face Fulham on Sunday.

Emery’s side head to Craven Cottage bidding to extend their winning streak to nine matches in all competitions.

But Arsenal will be battling fatigue after touching down in London in the early hours of Friday morning, following a 4,000km flight from Azerbaijan, where they beat Qarabag 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday.

It is hardly ideal preparation for an important Premier League clash, but Emery tried to guard against burn-out by resting several players against Qarabag.

And regardless of the potential for dwindling energy levels after the gruelling European trip, the Spaniard believes his stars should be able to cope.

“For us it’s not a problem to play on Thursday and then on Sunday because we want to play a lot of matches and a lot of competitions,” Emery said.

“We also want to give the players the chances and opportunities to play, to give them confidence, responsibility and rhythm like today for all our players.

“The players who sometimes don’t play were used against Qarabag. But then also, maybe players who featured against Qarabag can play on Sunday too.

“We can do that with some players. For us it’s very important on Sunday to produce the best performance.”

The Gunners should be able to use the momentum from their impressive winning run to keep them firing on all cylinders in the London derby.

Arsenal, up to fifth place after recovering from their slow start to the season, are vying to win six successive Premier League matches within a single campaign for the first time since August to October 2016.

‘Big challenge’
They could earn three consecutive away league victories for the first time in two years, but Emery won’t be taking Fulham for granted.

“Fulham is a very big challenge for us, first because it’s away and second because each match in the Premier League is very, very difficult,” Emery said.

“Fulham bought very good players like Seri, like Anguissa, and they have Mitrovic and Schurrle too. It’s a very good team and I think their coach is a very good coach with experience in England.

“We need to push against them on Sunday and also show our best performance. Our idea is to be focused on Sunday with all of our players.”

Arsenal hope Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will have recovered from illness, while Aaron Ramsey could play depending on the timing of his child’s birth.

Bernd Leno will make his first Premier League start, with Petr Cech ruled out by a hamstring injury.

A Fulham defeat on Sunday would equal the club’s worst start after eight top-flight matches.

They have won only one of their seven games and Slavisa Jokanovic’s side hold the division’s joint worst defensive record, conceding 16 goals along with Cardiff and Huddersfield.

“There’s huge room for improvement. We are working to find our best formation, Jokanovic said.

“We’re not at our best level, and we need to continue to work hard to reach that level. We need to be more ambitious, show more aggression, spirit, desire and intensity.

“After two hard games, Arsenal have found stability. They’re a team in form, a big club and a good team.

“We need to be motivated, and we will be ready for the battle.”

Arsenal can cope with hectic schedule, insists Emery

Ekiti Governorship Election: Security agencies to jointly deploy 30,000 personnel

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the command would ensure a serene environment before, during and after the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in the state.

The Police Command in Zamfara has assured residents of the state that it would provide adequate security to lives and property throughout the ongoing political activities in the area.

According to a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Mohammed Shehu, and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the command would ensure a serene environment before, during and after the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries in the state.

NAN reports that the APC governorship primaries in the state had been shifted several times as the party was factionalised with seven aspirants including the incumbent Deputy Governor, Malam Ibrahim Wakkala, opposing Gov. Abdul’Aziz Yari’s decision to anoint the party’s flag bearer.

This, the aspirants said, was against popular decision and not in conformity with the party’s principles.

In its response to the crisis, the national headquarters of the party dissolved the party’s executives  in the state and ordered the conduct of the primary election.

It said that the dissolved executive and the state governor must not have a hand in the exercise.

This decision was rejected by the governor who announced at a press briefing that he would not guarantee the safety of the national officials of the party headed by Dr Abubakar Fari, sent to conduct the primary election in the state.

The governor also directed his supporters to storm the state police command and peacefully protest against the decision of the party’s National Secretariat until the an agreement on an acceptable way to conduct the election was finalised and agreed upon.

The, police however, warned that anyone caught taking the law into his or her own hands would face the full wrath of the law.

Meanwhile, Wakkala has urged his supporters to remain calm and, saying that the primary election must hold as directed by the party’s National Headquarters.

In a statement signed by his Director-General of Media, Yusuf Idris, the deputy governor alleged that the crisis facing the party was the result of unfair treatment meted out to them by the governor.

“Once everyone is treated fairly, there will be no problem, anymore, because we have always been one big family, he said.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he hoped to accelerate a second summit between Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump as he kicked off an Asian trip Saturday that will feature a meeting with North Korea’s leader.

Pompeo arrived in Tokyo on the first leg of a tour that will take him to Pyongyang for a fourth time as the contours of a possibly historic US-North Korea deal take shape.

Speaking on the plane on the way from the United States, Pompeo said his aim was to “develop sufficient trust” between the historic foes to inch towards peace.

“Then we are also going to set up the next summit,” said Pompeo.

However, he played down expectations for a major breakthrough, saying: “I doubt we will get it nailed but begin to develop options for both location and timing for when Chairman Kim will meet with the president again.”

“Maybe we will get further than that.”

In June, Trump met Kim in Singapore in the first-ever summit between the countries.

No sitting US president has visited North Korea, which according to human rights groups remains one of the most repressive countries on Earth.

Since the Singapore summit, which yielded what critics charge was only a vague commitment by Kim towards denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, the road towards better ties has been bumpy.

Trump scrapped a previously planned trip by his top diplomat to Pyongyang after what he said was insufficient progress towards implementing the terms of the Singapore declaration.

But the unorthodox US president has since declared himself “in love” with the strongman in Pyongyang.

Pompeo has repeatedly declined to be drawn publicly on the shape of an eventual agreement. The United States has called for a comprehensive accord and strict enforcement of sanctions on North Korea in the meantime.

‘Grand bargain’
Pompeo kicked off his trip with talks in Tokyo with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Foreign Minister Taro Kono.

Japan, which has seen North Korean missiles fly over its territory and been threatened with annihilation, has historically taken a hard line on Pyongyang and stressed the need to maintain pressure on the regime.

More recently, however, Abe has said the only way to improve strained ties is a face-to-face meeting with former international pariah Kim.

Speaking ahead of his talks, Pompeo said it was important for him before travelling to Pyongyang that the two allies were “fully in sync.”

He said he would bring up with Kim the issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea decades ago, which is a huge issue domestically in Japan.

Abe called for “coordination” on this issue and also on North Korea’s nuclear threat.

After Tokyo, Pompeo travels to Pyongyang and then on to South Korea, whose dovish president Moon Jae-in has served as a go-between for the two sides.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha has given a hint of what a grand bargain between the two countries could look like.

In an interview with the Washington Post, she said the North could agree to dismantle Yongbyon, its signature nuclear site.

In exchange, the United States would declare a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War — which concluded with an armistice rather than a full-blown peace treaty — but North Korea would stop short of delivering an exhaustive list of its nuclear facilities, she said.

Pompeo did not discuss the possible outlines of a deal, saying only that his “mission is to make sure that we understand what each side is truly trying to achieve.”

After Seoul, Pompeo closes his trip Monday in China, North Korea’s political and economic lifeline.

The Beijing stop could be tense as it comes days after Vice President Mike Pence delivered a blistering speech accusing China of military aggression, commercial theft, rising human rights violations and electoral intervention against Trump.
