APC Primaries: Read Buhari's acceptance speech after being elected APC's flag-bearer

The APC national convention,  which held at the Eagles Square on Saturday, October 6, 2018, extended into Sunday, October 7, 2018.

President Buhari, at the national convention of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was endorsed as the party’s presidential candidate by over 14 million delegates.

The APC national convention,  which held at the Eagles Square on Saturday, October 6, 2018, extended into Sunday, October 7, 2018.

Here is President Buhari’s full acceptance speech, obtained from Facebook.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Chairman and members of the Convention Committee for planning and conducting this convention. The same appreciation goes to the chairmen of National and State Executive Committees of our party. Thank you very much for doing a difficult job well.

2. I would like to pay tribute to Chief Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Chief Bisi Akande the first chairman of our great Party and to Chief John Oyegun who led the party until this year and all the APC Governors.

3. The result of the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress this time is different because I am the only candidate. I thank all other eligible candidates who deferred to me in the interest of our party unity and over-all national stability.

4. Fellow party members, it is with a deep sense of humility that I stand before you today to accept the nomination of our party, the All Progressives Congress to be its candidate and flag-bearer in the 2019 presidential elections.

5. As I stand today before you, there is no honour greater than the confidence given to me by all of you when you affirmed my nomination. I thank you for your support. I thank you for your guidance. I thank you for staying committed to the CHANGE agenda.

6. I accept this honour as a tribute and mark of confidence to carry the responsibility as we all join hands to continue the good work of the APC government to 2023 and beyond.

7. We are very proud of our record from 2015 to date:

a. We have arrested and checked the slide to anarchy on the security and economic fronts.

b. Boko Haram is reduced to dastardly attacks on soft targets. Normalcy has returned to much of North East and neighbouring North West states.

c. Our currency has stabilised. Our reserves are now $44 billion, a lot higher than we had in 2015.

d. Power generation capacity has reached 8,000 megawatts against less than 4,600 when we came into office. As we invest in new power generation infrastructure we are strenuously working to address the legacy deficiencies and challenges of transmission and distribution networks across the country.

e. We are executing Independent Power Projects in 9 Federal Universities to deliver uninterrupted power supply and we intend to expand to a total of 37 Universities

f. We have revived most of our capacity to produce fertilisers locally.

g. The Government through its Anchor Borrowers Programme and other incentives has empowered more than 2 million farmers to go back to the land. We now produce 80% of our rice requirements. Many farmers who nearly lost hope are now millionaires.

h. We have introduced primary school feeding programmes to encourage attendance and enrolment. We also have introduced the conditional cash transfer to help small and medium businesses, the men, the women and young people who drive our economy.

i. We have repaired and are repairing major arterial roads and starting major railway projects with the aim of linking the 36 states with efficient road and rail transportation systems.

j. We are attacking corruption head-on. With international support we are recovering Nigerian stolen assets and applying them to infrastructural developments.

k. Today the corrupt are facing the wrath of law and leakages have been generally blocked. Mr. Chairman, Your Excellencies, Members of the APC.

8. We can be proud of our achievements. CHANGE has come. Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow Nigerians, think how much PDP Governments earned between 1999 to 2015. Think what they did with it.

a. Infrastructure down!

b. Security down! 18 local governments of Nigeria under control of a hostile army of insurgents,

c. Reserves depleted!

d. Bankruptcy around the corner.

9. What did they do with your money?

10. Internationally, Nigeria is now respected. My inter-action with foreign heads of state and government has been very encouraging. The international community is very supportive of our efforts to put our country in order.

11. Ladies and gentlemen, Members of APC. I thank you deeply for your support and confidence in me. I will not let you or the people of Nigeria down.

On to victory in 2019!

Long live APC!

Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!

Thank you and God bless you all.

Buhari becomes APC candidate for 2019, taunts PDP

Buhari also thanked the party’s national leadership and its founding fathers and the National Presidential Convention Committee for organising what he called a perfect convention.

President Muhammadu Buhari promptly launched his campaign for a second term in office early on Sunday morning after being overwhelmingly endorsed as candidate by 14,842,072 members of the All Progressives Congress across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory(FCT).

Taunting the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, which had governed Nigeria for 16 years, up till May 2015, President Buhari asked the party, also holding its convention simultaneously in Port Harcourt, what it did with all the money earned under its watch.

“Fellow Nigerians, think how much PDP Governments earned between 1999 to 2015. Think what they did with it.
Infrastructure down! Security down! 18 local governments of Nigeria under control of a hostile army of insurgents. Reserves depleted! Bankruptcy around the corner.

“What did they do with your money?, Buhari asked in a tone indicative of fireworks to be expected in the weeks ahead for the electioneering campaign.

President Buhari thanked all eligible members of the party who stepped down their ambition to allow him emerge as the party’s sole aspirant and now its candidate.

“I thank you all for your encouragement and support, and I will not disappoint the people of Nigeria,he said.

The president paid special tribute to the party’s national leadership and its founding fathers and the National Presidential Convention Committee for organising what he called a perfect convention.

He maintained that the Federal Government was tackling corruption head-on, and it is also rebuilding the economy and developing infrastructure, saying that the APC was proud of its achievements.

He also said that his recent interactions with the international community have been very encouraging, adding that the international community was giving the Nigerian government the necessary support.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 14.8 million votes that Buhari received from APC members in a direct primary was announced early Sunday morning by the Ekiti State Governor elect, Dr Kayode Fayemi who was the chairman APC Presidential Primary Election Committee. Fayemi had also chaired the APC Convention in Lagos in 2014 that elected Buhari as the party’s candidate.

The result was later affirmed by no fewer than 7,000 delegates from across the federation and the FCT through a yes vote.

The delegates were made up of three from each Local Government Area elected at the party’s recent state Congresses aside the statutory delegates.

Gov. Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo who is the Chairman APC National Presidential Convention Committee, described Buhari as the antidote for all political locusts.

“He is the insecticide for all political termites and the saviour of the oppressed and downtrodden, and the best president for the people.

“We are impressed by his exemplary honesty, sincerity and commitment to a greater Nigeria,he said, adding that President Buhari has positively impacted on the lives of Nigerians in the last three and half years.

He called on Nigerians to vote for him again in 2019 to enable him consolidate on his achievements and take the country to greater heights.

Ajimobi said the convention had opened a new chapter in Nigeria’s political history and called on APC members not to succumb or be distracted by the negative propaganda of the opposition.

“We have a job to do, let us all join hands with President Buhari and roll up our sleeves for the task ahead,he said.

Mr Adams Oshiomhole, the APC National Chairman formally presented President Buhari to the convention as the party’s 2019 presidential candidate, amidst cheers from delegates and other party members.

“I hereby formally present President Muhammadu Buhari as the candidate of our party for the 2019 presidential election to everyone here and to Nigerians, and by the grace of God, victory shall be ours,he said.

Present at the convention, were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, APC Governors, National Assembly members and party delegates from the 36 states and FCT.

The power of forgiveness

Prophet Sunday O. Nwabeke

A woman comes to Jesus in a Pharisee’s house weeping, as she washed His feet.

No doubt, she felt shame as Simon’s eyes communicated to everyone present that this woman was a sinner and that Jesus had no business letting her touch Him.

Indeed, she was a sinner. There was a place for true shame, but not for too long.

Jesus said, “Your sins are forgiven (Luke 7:48). And when the guests murmured about this, He strengthened her faith by saying, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace (Luke 7:50).

How did Jesus help her battle the crippling effects of shame? He gave her a promise: “Your sins have been forgiven!

Your faith has saved you. Your future will be one of peace. He declared that past pardon would now yield future peace.

So, the issue for her was faith in God’s future grace, rooted in the authority of Jesus’ forgiving work and freeing word.

That is the way every one of us must battle the effects of well-placed shame — not false shame, but shame that we really should feel, shame that threatens to linger too long and cripple us.

We must battle the unbelief of crippling shame by taking hold of the promises of future grace and peace that come through forgiveness of our shameful acts.

• “With you there is forgiveness, that you may be feared. (Psalm 130:4)

• “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. (Isaiah 55:6–7)

• “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

• “To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name. (Acts 10:43)

All of us need forgiveness. And we will need it tomorrow. Jesus died to provide it today and tomorrow.

Today or tomorrow, the reality is this: God’s forgiveness liberates us for our future. It frees us from crippling shame. Forgiveness is full of future grace.

When we live by faith in future grace, rooted in God’s forgiveness, we are freed from the lingering, paralysing effects, even of the shame we deserve to feel. That’s what forgiveness means.

You Must Fight Hard for Peace

The dove is a nearly universal symbol of peace. And a very appropriate one. Doves are beautiful, gentle and faithful creatures.

They’re also, well, flighty creatures. It doesn’t take much to send a dove fluttering away. A harsh word, a rash gesture, and off she goes.

If you want a dove to stay around, you have to be very careful how you speak and act. Which is a lot like what it takes to be at peace with other people.

“When a conflict is brewing, we should assume it is avoidable and do everything to pursue peace.

The author of Hebrews tells us to “strive for peace with everyone (Hebrews 12:14). His implication: peace — real, honest peace, not dysfunctional conflict avoidance — is hard to keep.

How hard? Well, pursuing peace fits into the list of hard things he groups around this statement:

• It’s hard like lifting drooping hands and strengthening weak knees when you’re tired and discouraged (Hebrews 12:12).

• It’s hard like continuing to walk when your leg is injured (Hebrews 12:13).

Blessed are the pure in heart – Part 1

Rev. Theodore Effiong

If you are free from sexual sin, apart from the danger of hell fire, you don’t know what God has done for you. You are a blessed person indeed.

“But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart. Matthew 5:28.

If mere looking at a woman lustfully can take one to hell fire as said by the Lord, then how much more the real act.

Jesus said whosoever looks lustfully is already a victim. This tells me lust is actually more dangerous than sexual immorality itself.

Anyone living in the sin of sexual immorality knows inside of him that he is already a dead man.

But sexual purity is a thing of the heart and mind. There are too many Christians who have been captured in their minds.

Their mind has been taken over and corrupted. Many will still go to hell, not because of committing the very act of immorality, but because of lust.

Falling into sexual immorality or becoming a sexual slave is not until you are sleeping around everywhere like a dog.

Sexual immorality begins with your thoughts. The eye gate is a major entrance point for demonic incursion and demonic traffic to enter. This is a warfare you must win.

It is not optional. Failure to win in this area is eternal damnation. If you are an unmarried young person, I pray you will value your chastity and maintain it until your wedding night.

If you are a husband, I pray you will purpose in your heart to be true and faithful to your wife always.

If you are a wife, I pray you will be devoted to loving only your husband your entire life.

If you are a preacher, I pray you will hold up to the standard of purity in your marriage, your ministry and that you will use your influence to help others practise purity as they seek to please God.

My prayer for you, who have failed and fallen into impurity, is to seek the Lord’s forgiveness and mercy.

You can rise out of your impurity and receive cleansing by the Blood of Jesus and deliverance by the power of God’s Spirit.

“Casting down IMAGINATIONS and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity EVERY THOUGHT to the obedience of Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5

Sexual iniquity is very attractive. It is pleasant to the eyes, yet it can leave you blind like Samson. Forbidden fruits appear attractive. “And the woman saw…that it was pleasant to the eyes. Genesis 3:6.

“And from the roof he saw a woman washing herself AND THE WOMAN WAS VERY BEAUTIFUL TO LOOK UPON.

2 Samuel 11:2b. This episode in the life of King David led ultimately to loss of lives.

His throne was shaken and the sword never departed from his house. His son raped his daughter and was killed. It all began by what he saw. God created us with a drive for food, sleep and sex.

Yet, men and women choose of their own free will to misuse this sex drive by selfishly giving place to unclean passions. Sex is beautiful, satisfying and pure IN THE MARRIAGE UNION.

Practised before marriage or in extra marital affairs brings guilt and as the Bible declares “a wound and dishonour, a reproach that shall never be wiped away. If you are not into sexual immorality, pornography or masturbation, you are blessed.

You may not really know what God has done for you to keep you sexually pure. Again if you are a virgin, God is powerfully with you. Virginity is dignity; keep it to the end.

One may not be committing immorality yet is burning with lust. “But if they cannot contain, let them marry: for it is better to marry than to burn. 1 Corinthians 7:9. Many people are indeed burning with inordinate affection.

If they don’t do something to put that fire out, they will see themselves burning to ashes eternally.

There is no young person I respect more than the young man or woman who has kept his/her virginity till the day of his or her marriage.

I salute every young person who has done this. I heard of a young person who was being chided by her school friends because she would not engage in sexual activity.

Manchester United: Twitter reacts as Sanchez saves Mourinho from home defeat

Alexis Sanchez

Manchester United produced a stunning comeback against Newcastle United to dominate the Twitter trends.

Twitter was in overdrive as Manchester United came back from two goals down to get all three points against Newcastle United with Alexis Sanchez scoring a late winner which keeps Jose Mourinho in his job.

The 20 time Premier League champions weer under pressure after being knocked out in the Carabao Cup by Championship side Derby County, a Premier League defeat to West Ham United and a 0-0 draw against Spanish La Liga side Valencia in their second group stage fixture of the 2018/19 UEFA Champions League.

Two goals from Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto put winless Newcastle in a comfortable lead but a second half turn around by Juan Mata and Anthony Martial before Sanchez turned out with the winner.

Twitter users were of different opinions as to if Mourinho should continue as Manchester United boss as the recent displays have been substandard, here is a compilation of their reactions.

Sanchez winner

Some Twitter users were of the opinion that Sanchez may have saved Mourinho's job for the season after a difficult start to the season.

"Alexis Sanchez scoring to ensure that Mourinho keeps his job for another few weeks. Once a gunner, always a gunner."

"I'm delighted for Sánchez. There's still a great player in there. What a big goal for him, Manchester United and José Mourinho."

"Wenger does it again! Sells Sánchez to United so he could get a winner and Mourinho could stay at United for longer! "

"If Alexis Sanchez just saved Jose Mourinho's job, that could be the best goal he ever scored for the Arsenal."

Mourinho out

Some Manchester United supporters aare optimistic that the victory is the start of a new beginning for the Club and that Mourinho deserves a second chance to give the players the opportunity to express themselves through attacking football.

The Portuguese manager was hailed for inspiring a memorable comeback at Old Trafford since the times of former boss Alex Ferguson as #MourinhoIn was among the trends, here are their reactions.

"Let's be realistic. You struggled against the team who are 2nd bottom and have only scored 3 goals prior to today but you celebrate like you've won the league. Like I said"

"Mourinho masterclass. Should have changed McTominay in the 18th minute but did not want to ruin his career, changed him at halftime and brought on supersubs Fellaini and Sanchez right on time to pull off one of their best ever United performances."

"If its true the Manchester united board will sack José Mourinho regardless of the outcome against Newcastle tomorrow.

It will be a sad day for @ManUtd supporters because the rebuilding process will continue.."

"In Mourinho we trust, Amazing will and determination from the players, need to show this class for the whole game and not the last 20 minutes, But Jose Mourinho again showed that he is the one who can revive this club from the depth "

"You spend £420 million and then decide to play Pogba at centre back when you have defenders on the bench. I hope Mourinho stays at Man Utd forever, it’s brilliant to see."

Manchester United will aim to continue in winning ways when they take on Mourinho's former club Chelsea in their next Premier League encounter scheduled for Saturday, October 20 after the international break.
