2019 Elections: President Buhari assures Nigerians he will not disappoint if re-elected

APC Primaries: Read Buhari's acceptance speech after being elected APC's flag-bearer

He gave the assurance after being declared as the APC presidential candidate at the party’s National Presidential Convention which ended in the early hours of Sunday at the Abuja Eagle Square.

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Nigerians that he will not disappoint them if he is re-elected as President in 2019.

He gave the assurance after being declared as the APC presidential candidate at the party’s National Presidential Convention which ended in the early hours of Sunday at the Abuja Eagle Square.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that President Buhari scored a total of 14,842,072 votes at the party’s recent presidential primaries held across the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as announced by Dr Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State Governor-elect, to emerge as the party’s candidate.

Fayemi, who was the Chairman,APC Presidential Primary Committee, later asked the no fewer than 7,00 delegates from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to affirm the president’s candidacy through a yes vote, which they did.

Aside the statuary delegates, the delegates who were drawn from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT, were made up of three from each Local Government Area.

They were elected at the party’s State Congresses held earlier in the year.

President Buhari specifically thanked all other eligible candidates within the party who deferred their aspirations because of him in the interest of the party’s unity and overall national stability.

“Ladies and gentlemen, members of APC. I thank you deeply for your support and confidence in me. I will not let you or the people of Nigeria down.

“Fellow party members, it is with a deep sense of humility that I stand before you today to accept the nomination of our party, the APC to be its candidate and flag-bearer in the 2019 presidential elections.

“As I stand today before you, there is no honour greater than the confidence given to me by all of you when you affirmed my nomination.

“I accept this honour as a tribute and mark of confidence to carry the responsibility as we all join hands to continue the good work of the APC government to 2023 and beyond,he said.

He thanked the party members for their support and guidance and for staying committed to the change agenda.

The president expressed gratitude to the party’s National Chairman,Mr Adams Oshiomhole, and members of the National Convention Committee for planning and conducting the convention.

He also appreciated the chairmen of National and State Executive Committees of the APC, saying: I thank you very much for doing a difficult job well.

President Buhari, however, noted that the result of the APC presidential primaries was different this time, because he was the only candidate.

The president, while recalling the achievements of the APC-led Federal Government, said the party was very proud of its records from 2015 to date, adding that it had arrested and checked the slide to anarchy on the security and economic fronts.

He added that Boko Haram under the government, had been reduced to attacks on soft targets as normalcy had returned to much of North-East and neighbouring North-West states.

The president also noted that the country’s currency had stabilised while its reserves was now $44 billion, a lot higher than it was in 2015 when the APC Government came into power.

“Power generation capacity has reached 8,000 megawatts as against less than 4,600 when we came into office.

“As we invest in new power generation infrastructure, we are strenuously working to address the legacy deficiencies and challenges of transmission and distribution networks across the country.

“We are executing Independent Power Projects in nine Federal Universities to deliver uninterrupted power supply and we intend to expand to a total of 37 Universities, the president said.

He added that the Government through its Anchor Borrowers Programme and other incentives had empowered more than two million farmers to go back to agriculture.

He further added that the country now produces 80 per cent of its rice requirements as many farmers who nearly lost hope were now millionaires.

Buhari said the APC-led Federal Government had also introduced primary school feeding programmes to encourage attendance and enrollment and had introduced the conditional cash transfer.

This, he said, was to help small and medium businesses, men and women and young people who drove our economy.

He said the Government had repaired and was repairing major arterial roads and starting major railway projects with the aim of linking the 36 states with efficient road and rail transportation systems.

The president maintained that the Government was attacking corruption head-on, with international support, saying that it was presently recovering Nigeria’s stolen assets and applying same to infrastructure development.

“Today the corrupt are facing the wrath of the law and leakages have been generally blocked. We can be proud of our achievements, change has come,President Buhari stressed.

He, however, charged  Nigerians to think of how much the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) Government earned between 1999 and 2015  that it was in power and what it did with it.

The president recalled that under the PDP Government, infrastructure and security was down while 18 Local Government in the North-East were under control of Boko Haram.

He said under that Government, the country’s reserves were depleted and bankruptcy was around the corner, adding that Nigerians should ask the PDP what it did with the national treasury.

He added that Nigeria was now respected internationally, saying that the international community was very supportive of the APC-Government’s efforts to put the country in order.

NAN further reports that the convention was attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, some APC governors, members of the National Assembly and other stakeholders of the party from across the federation.

Tambuwal campaign organisation has commended the conduct of the National convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.

The organisation, in a statement by its spokesperson, Dr. Okey Ikechukwu, said that the foundations for faith in the outcome of the PDP convention has already been laid by the fact that the process was transparent, open, free and fair, stressing that all the agents of the presidential aspirants attested to the credibility of the exercise.

“Nigerians are our witnesses here. We must commend the leadership of the PDP, the convention committee, party delegates and party faithful for the thoroughness, maturity and patience that enhanced the credibility of the process itself.”

He said that the aspirants also showed to the world that they are not desperate for power, but are in the contest for the good of Nigeria and Nigerians.

“We could all see their maturity, composure and show of brotherly love and support, which made a decent contest among responsible brothers,” Ikechukwu said.

“By the success of this exercise, the PDP has demonstrated to the world that our great party is ready to rejig Nigeria and that it remains a truly democratic party that allows free and full participation of all.

“There is no imposition here. We shall have an uncontested result. It is all happening in the full glare of Nigerians and the world. No one will concoct some imaginary figures and inflict on others, as is happening is some other parties. The transparency of the process has laid an unshakeable foundation for incontrovertible outcomes,” Ikechukwu concluded.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Despite crucial political events like the APC and PDP Presidential Primary elections, the UFC fight topped Twitter Nigeria trends.

Nigerians who were aren’t familiar with the name Khabib Nurmagomedov would be doing lots of Googling after they found the Russian who stunned Connor McGregor in a UFC fight on top of Twitter trends on Sunday morning.

conversations around his win over McGregor dominated Twitter on Sunday morning which made him go number on the trends.

After his win, the Russian caused chaos, Nurmagomedov leapt over the fight cage and went for McGregor’s teammate Dillon Danis which resulted in a mass brawl.

Mass brawl

“Great win @TeamKhabib sometimes u have to burn the whole house down…i understand,â€ rapper Pusha T wrote on Twitter.

“I'm glad Khabib poesed racist McGregor, a twitter user @Tswana_Guy3 wrote with a video of McGregor being pummelled during the fight.

“Khabib beat gregor then proceed to beat all the people on his team, @PRODEEGY wrote.

Legendary boxer Mike Tyson said the chaos was crazier than his fight riot during his days as a boxer.

Watching the @TheNotoriousMMA vs @TeamKhabib fight. Unimaginable never thought it would go down like this.  Crazier than my fight riot, Tyson wrote on Twitter.

“I don't see how Khabib was unsportsmanlike, Connor disrespected his nationality, family, and religion, basically everything that makes Khabib who he is; How did you expect Khabib to react?, @Dark_Ages_2050 wrote.

“Let's see if Khabib gets the same treatment as Conor when he was acting a fool.oh wait Khabib is a muslim, I forgot,  @SincerelySigned wrote.

“McGregor called Khabib racial slurs. Called his manger a terrorist. Shoved a drink in his face when he knew Khabib doesn’t drink. THREW A METAL DOLLEY INTO A BUS INJURING FIGHTERS. But sure, all of this is Khabib’s fault, @ZaneTheSane wrote.

“I will say this: If Conor had done what Khabib did, the Twittersphere would be out of control praising him for being a "real gangster." It happened after Brooklyn for sure.  It's not going that way for Khabib and I do kind of wonder why, @AdamHillLVRJ wrote.

“Everyone saying Khabib is a disgrace? The guy is human and we can only take so much when our buttons are pressed. He was so composed throughout the process up until the end but if you insult someone, be ready to face them! @gerech97 wrote.

“If Khabib disappointed you tonight, MMA isn't for you. Watch a more politically correct sport, like baseball, you fuckin pussies, @jameslemnny wrote.

“Khabib jumping over the cage to attack the guy trash talking was wrong. But Conor has done the same before and I've not seen anywhere near as much backlash. The hypocrisy on the timeline is unreal, @SuperSaf wrote.

“No one can condone what Khabib did tonight. He let his emotions get the best of him. He's only human. But to punish him after what McGregor has done is irrational. He's the undisputed champ. He's earned it, @ChicagoMamba wrote.

Despite crucial political events like the APC and PDP Presidential Primary elections, the UFC fight topped Twitter Nigeria trends.

‘Khabib’ was first while ‘McGregor’ came second on the trends. ‘Conor’, and ‘#UFC229’ were also among the top trends on Sunday morning.

Oshiomhole’s APC is ridden with “impunity” – Aisha Buhari

A few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari received the ticket of the All Progressive Congress (APC) seeking re-election in 2019, the First Lady, Aisha Buhari took to social media to express her displeasure over the “impunity” taking place in the ruling party.

In her statement, she said it is disheartening that some people buy nomination forms only to find out that the tickets have been handed — automatically — to ‘preferred candidates’.

She also stated that she doesn’t quite understand how such will go on under the watch of a comrade and activist.

Read her statement below:

“It is disheartening to note that some aspirants used their hard earned money to purchase nomination forms, got screened, cleared and campaigned vigorously yet found their names omitted on Election Day, these forms were bought at exorbitant prices.
Many others contested and yet had their result delayed. Fully knowing that AUTOMATIC tickets have been given to other people.

“All Progressives Congress being a party whose cardinal principle is change and headed by a comrade/ activist whose main concern is for the common man, yet, such impunity could take place under its watch.

“Given this development one will not hesitate than DISSOCIATE from such unfairness, be neutral and speak for the voiceless.

“It is important for the populace to rise against impunity and for voters to demand from aspirants to be committed to the provision of basic amenities such as:
1. Potable drinking water
2. Basic health care ( Primary Health Care centers)
3. Education within conducive & appropriate learning environments.

“Let us vote wisely !!!!
LONG LIVE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA!!!!!!”

Tech: This is the one internet law Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales would radically rewrite

Wikipedia founder campaigned against the EU proposals.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales wants to rewrite China's censorship laws. He said would stick the US First Amendment into the Chinese system, or failing that, introduce judicial reviews when China wants to ban websites.

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has said there is one law relating to the internet that he would completely rewrite.

Speaking to Business Insider after being named in the UK Tech 100 ranking of the most influential people in British tech, Wales said he would rip up censorship laws in China.

"If it were completely up to me with absolute power, I would just stick the US First Amendment into the Chinese system and require that it be enforced appropriately," Wales said.

He admitted this ambition is "a bit silly," so at a minimum he said there should be a proper legal process every time China decides it is going to black out a website.

Wales continued: "In terms of a realistic dream, to say any time you are going to block a website, there needs to be a true process of independent judicial review."

His intervention comes at a time when Google is drawing up plans to launch a censored search engine in China having quit the country in 2010. The company has confirmed the so-called Project Dragonfly but said that the plans remain in their infancy.

Wales reminded Google that its experiences in China have not always been positive and it is a hot button issue among staff. This has proven to be the case in recent weeks, with at least one executive quitting over Google's ambitions.

"Google in the past had a lot of damage to their brand from cooperating in China, a lot of damage to their employee morale and as we know the Google employees seem to take very seriously the 'don't be evil' concept. They occasionally protest about things with good impact I would say," Wales said.

How we are spending recovered loots – Buhari

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari PHOTO: TWITTER/ MUHAMMADU BUHARI<br />

Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has made clarification on the confusion trailing the whereabouts and spending of recovered looted funds.

The Nigerian government in April said the recovered loots were being paid into dedicated accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN).

Buhari, in his acceptance speech after he clinched the ruling All Progressives Congress presidential ticket on Saturday, said his administration has been spending the recovered money lost to graft on infrastructural structures.

The President was, however, not specific on the infrastructural developments ongoing with the recovered funds.

“We are attacking corruption head-on. With international support we are recovering Nigerian stolen assets and applying them to infrastructural developments,” Buhari said.

While the greatest expectation on Buhari remains in the ability of his government to stem the tide corruption, questions have been raised on the discrepancies in the figures released to the media by Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, and former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun.

Several members of opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) who served in the Goodluck Jonathan administration or participated in re-election bid of the former president have been arrested with various amounts allegedly recovered from them.

The EFCC had also announced recoveries of cash hauls, sometimes in millions of dollars, from homes of former administration officials and even security agencies.

Anti-graft detectives made back-to-back recoveries after the administration’s whistle-blower policy came to force in late 2016.

Magu has regularly touted his agency’s success in the fight against corruption, especially on confiscation of ill-gotten wealth from public coffers.

In February, he said the EFCC recovered as much as N500 billion in 2017 alone.

Two months before in November 2017, he disclosed that the EFCC recovered about N739 billion within two years.

However, the figures were disputed by the ministry and department saddled with administering the recoveries.

The Ministry of Finance in a letter in February 9 letter to Magu, said the ministry had calculated all recovered funds and arrived at N91 billion (N91,383,370,501.73) in recovery loot account.

The amount represents about 18 per cent of the N500 billion Magu said was recovered in 2017 and a little over 12 per cent of the N739 billion he said had been recovered within two years.

The N91.3 billion also included assets under final and interim forfeitures and funds recovered in foreign currencies, according to an updated table of the recoveries attached to the letter.

The Nigerian government has ever since then remained silent on these discrepancies.

The Big 5: Buhari secures 14.8m votes to win APC presidential primary; SDP elects Donald Duke as presidential flag bearer | More stories

These are the stories you should be monitoring today:

Following the conduct of direct primaries across the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory for its only Presidential aspirant, Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Saturday, affirmed the President as the candidate of the party for the February 16, 2019 Presidential election.

According to the results announced by the Ekiti Governor-elect, Kayode Fayemi, at the National Convention of the party held at the Eagles Square, Abuja on Saturday, President Buhari secured a total of 14,842,072 votes from members of the ruling APC to give a nod to his bid to return to the Presidential Villa in 2019.

“I accept the nomination of our party APC to be the Presidential candidate and flag bearer in the 2019 election,I thank you for your support for me. I will not let you or Nigeria down,” the President said in his acceptance speech.

Former Governor of Cross River, Donald Duke, has emerged as the Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party for the February 16 Presidential election, defeating five other aspirants at the party’s National Convention with 1726 delegates in attendance.

At the end of the exercise held between Saturday and the early hours of Sunday at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja, Duke polled 812 votes to defeat his close rival, former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, who polled 611 votes as well as John Dara, with 104 votes; Prof. Iyorwuese Hagher who garnered 72 votes; Felix Osakwe who scored 10 votes, while the number of invalid votes was 63.

Governor Jibrilla Bindow of Adamawa has emerged winner of the APC governorship primary election in the state scoring a total of 193,656 votes to defeat two other candidates, Halilu Ahmed who scored 15,738 votes to come second and Malam Nuhu Ribadu who came third with 8,364 votes.

As reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Sani had on Saturday, said “I cannot be part of a fraud scripted by Elrufai aimed at imposing his aide, UBA SANI. The Governor’s opposition to direct primaries is all about giving him the opportunity to impose his stooges and lackeys,” describing the exercise as a “Kangaroo election organised by the Kaduna State Government.’’

Senator representing Kaduna North, Suleiman Hunkuyi has won the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) ticket for the District, polling 158 votes to  defeat his contestatants – Jafar Mohammed who polled 90 votes and Bilkisu Soba who garnered 74 votes at the party’s primary election held in Zaria.

The Senator representing Bayelsa East, Ben Murray-Bruce has expressed his readiness to appear before Police on Monday after he among three other senators; Senators Bukola Saraki and Dino Melaye were summoned by the police authorities over a protest the party held on Friday, in the Federal Capital Territory.

Bruce who disclosed this in an interview with Silverbird Television at the comencement of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) national convention in Port Harcourt on Saturday, said it was a peaceful protest to express the party’s grievances on the Osun election, adding that he “has nothing to hide.â€

“The summon is a party issue but after my meeting on Sunday, I will appear. I will love to appear if they ask me to appear 10 times a day or 55 times. I am a law abiding citizen, let them do whatever they want to do. It is all politics, he said
