Here's everything that happened at the 4th edition of the Lagos Startup Week

Since the first edition held in 2015, Lagos Startup Week has played an annual host to thousands of entrepreneurs who take out time to be part of the week’s celebration.

Lagos startup Week, an annual week-long celebration of entrepreneurs, investors, professionals, and creatives in the city of Lagos held its fourth edition last week across various venues in the city.

The event, organised by Prime Startups, is reshaping the entrepreneurial culture in Lagos, and by extension, Nigeria. Through a hard emphasis on innovation as a watchword for entrepreneurs.

Since the first edition held in 2015, Lagos Startup Week has played an annual host to thousands of entrepreneurs who take out time to be part of the week’s celebration. Having been at the forefront of driving the much-needed talk and push for innovation in the city of Lagos, the week has invited speakers from various destinations outside Nigeria to share insights.

Focusing on over 10 tracks, and hosting over 30 sessions, this year’s Lagos Startup Week dished out the best and highest form of quality contents to its attendees. The week which started with a kickoff ceremony on Monday 24th September, held various other sessions spanning areas like startup finance, growth hacking, fintech, retail, business and more.

The event kicked off on Monday, September 24, 2018, where seasoned entrepreneurs like Onyeka Akumah (co-founder/CTO, Farmcrowdy), Vivian Nwakah (founder, Medsaf), Simon Aderinola (country director, Africa’s Talking) and Chinedu Azodoh (co-founder/CTO, Max) were hosted on a panel session moderated by Business Insider Sub-Saharan Africa.

“What we have successfully done with the Lagos Startup Week is encourage a new crop of innovators. This is bound to have a ripple effect on the city and we can’t wait to begin seeing these changes. Our collaboration with strategic sponsors like Infinix Nigeria made this even much easier. I think Lagos Startup Week comes off as a model that should be replicated across the various African ecosystems

At Lagos Startup Week, it is held to heart that innovation is not limited and transcends every possible sector.

On Friday, September 28, 2018, Business Insider Sub-Saharan Africa hosted Abasiama Idaresit, Managing Director, Wild Fusion and Jeremy Kirshbaum, an innovation expert on a panel discussion, “What investors look for in startups.

APC: Marafa accuses Yari of frustrating primary election in Zamafara

Senator Kabiru Marafa

Senator Kabiru Marafa, has accused Governor Abdulaziz Yari of “frustrating the conduct of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in Zamfara state.

Addressing journalists in Gusau, Governor Yari urged all APC members in Zamfara state to conduct the primaries individually to beat the 12 midnight deadline by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

But, in a statement, Marafa described the governor’s directive as an invitation to anarchy.

“This is an invitation to anarchy and we will never be part of any illegality, aimed at pushing the state into anarchy.

“Governor Yari threatened that there would be bloodbath in Zamfara, five innocent persons were killed and many more wounded by Yaris boys, and the culprits are still working freely, he added.

Pompeo says Kim 'ready' to invite inspectors to nuclear site

This picture taken on October 7, 2018 and released by North Korea's official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on October 8, 2018 via KNS shows North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (R) shaking hands with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the Paekhwawon State Guesthouse in Pyongyang. Kim Jong Un has agreed to hold a second summit with US President Donald Trump as soon as possible, Seoul said on October 7, after Washington's top diplomat held "productive" talks on denuclearisation with the North Korean leader in Pyongyang. / AFP PHOTO / KCNA VIA KNS / KCNA VIA KNS / – South Korea OUT /

International inspectors will be allowed into North Korea’s dismantled nuclear testing site, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Monday, after a meeting with Kim Jong Un in which he said “significant progress” was made towards denuclearisation.

Pompeo met with the North Korean leader in Pyongyang on Sunday to rekindle stalled denuclearisation talks following a landmark summit between Kim and US President Donald Trump in Singapore.

“Chairman Kim said he’s ready to allow them to come in” and see the dismantled Punggye-ri nuclear test site, Pompeo said.

North Korea took apart the Punggye-ri facility in the country’s northeast in May but has yet to allow international observers into the site to verify its claims.

The facility, buried inside a mountain near the border with China, was the staging ground for all six of the North’s nuclear tests.

The inspectors will be allowed in as soon as the two sides agree on “logistics”, Pompeo told reporters in Seoul before leaving for Beijing on a whirlwind diplomatic trip.

Pompeo, however, did not comment on possible corresponding measures to be taken by Washington.

Denuclearisation of North Korea is “a long process”, Pompeo said, adding: “We made significant progress.”

The top US diplomat also said the two countries were “pretty close” to setting a date and location for the second summit between Kim and Trump.

‘A good meeting’
The visit was Pompeo’s fourth to North Korea.

Trump met Kim in Singapore in June for the first-ever summit between the two countries, resulting in what critics say was only a vague commitment by the North Korean leader towards denuclearisation.

Kim “expressed his gratitude to President Trump for making sincere effort” to implement the Singapore agreement, according to a report on the Pompeo visit by North Korea’s state news agency KCNA.

“Kim Jong Un appreciated the positively developing situation on the Korean peninsula… (and) explained in detail the proposals for solving the denuclearization issue,” KCNA said.

The North’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper carried the meeting on its front page, with eight photos of the two men shaking hands and smiling broadly.

Pompeo and Kim had “a good meeting”, Trump tweeted, adding: “I look forward to seeing Chairman Kim again, in the near future.”

Washington and Pyongyang have sparred over the exact terms of the vaguely-worded agreement in Singapore, with the US pushing to maintain sanctions and pressure against the North until its “final, fully verified denuclearisation”.

Last month, the North’s foreign minister told the United Nations there was “no way” his country would disarm first as long as tough US sanctions remain against his country.

After a previous visit to Pyongyang in July, Pompeo had said the two foes made progress on key issues — but within hours of his departure the North condemned “gangster-like” demands from the US, raising questions over how much the two sides really saw eye to eye.

Diplomatic strides
South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Monday that he believed Kim would soon meet with the leaders of China and Russia “soon” as a “new order is being created on the Korean peninsula”.

As Pyongyang continues to take big diplomatic strides, analysts say the US may soon be pushed into a corner to relax sanctions.

“North Korea is bolstering its ties with China and Russia so although the US is maintaining the sanctions regime, it’s on thin ice,” said Hong Hyun-ik, an analyst at the Sejong Institute.

“President Trump is very close to losing control,” he said.

China and Russia — North Korea’s traditional allies — called for relaxed sanctions against Pyongyang at the UN Security Council last month, saying “steps … toward gradual disarmament should be followed by an easing of sanctions.”
