Prince Charles To Address Herdsmen Attacks During Nigeria Visit, Says Envoy

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Paul Arkwright, announced in Abuja on Sunday that Prince Charles would engage in peace-building activities, including addressing the persistent attacks of herdsmen on farming communities in Nigeria.

The Prince of Wales and his wife, Princess Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall are expected in Nigeria from Nov. 6 to Nov. 8 in a high profile visit during which the royals would also have audience with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) ahead of the visit, Arkwright said that one of the events on the agenda was for Prince Charles to discuss practical solutions to alleviating the tensions, arising from the activities of herdsmen.

Herdsmen have launched a deadly onslaught on farming communities in Nigeria in recent years, raising concerns over the future of agriculture in a nation, having majority of its populace engaged in subsistence agriculture.

“People do want to come together and if we can provide that kind of environment then hopefully, we can come up with some ideas and solutions to resolving some of these conflicts.

“Some of the issues like the farmers/herders crisis are deep-rooted and are about the economy, land resource, climate change and cultural issues.

“The Prince of Wales will be looking at the causes, talking to people who are working in this area and together, seeing if we can find solutions and move on.

Arkwright said that addressing the root causes of conflicts would lead to a peaceful and more prosperous Nigeria and also become beneficial to the relations between Nigeria and Britain.

He noted that the visit was also aimed at strengthening the existing ties between Nigeria and Britain as members of the Commonwealth.

Prince Charles, who took over as the Head of the 53-member Commonwealth of Nations last April, succeeding his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, has already visited 44 African nations.

“Prince Charles has not been here since the past 12 years. 2006 was the last time he was here and the Duchess of Cornwall, has never been to Nigeria. So it is about strengthening ties, particularly people-to-people ties.

“We want to ensure that through the Commonwealth, which is another theme of the prince’s visit, we develop links to develop relationships whether in trade, environment or in education, all of which are important to the future of the Commonwealth and to the future of Nigeria.

The top diplomat said that other events lined up on the agenda of the visit would focus on culture, music, fashion, among others.

“Prince Charles will be talking about rural livelihoods, agriculture, the environment, some of the passions that he has which is so relevant to Nigeria today and to young people and the importance of getting young people into jobs.

“One of his passions as well is how do we build the skills of young people so that they will be equipped for the world.

“There is a whole range of interests that he has and I think Nigeria is a wonderful place to come to because it brings together all of these interests.

The duchess is also to engage in literary activities with children and some Nigerian authors, while the prince would meet with traditional rulers and hold peace-building meeting with Nigerian youth ambassadors.

SEMA Bans Political Activities On IDPs Camps In Benue

benue

MAKURDI – The Benue State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has banned the use of all Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in the state for political purpose.
The agency also alleged that thugs and security personnel attached the campaign train of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the IDPs’ camp Daudu for campaign, harassed and intimidated IDPs at the camp.
Emmanuel Shior, Executive Secretary, Benue SEMA who placed the ban in a statement made available to Daily Independent in Makurdi on Sunday said a woman who was manhandled sustained a fracture while being manhandled by thugs and security personnel.
He explained that the ban became necessary, following the political rally by the APC at the IDP camp at Daudu about a week ago.
Shior observed that: “The most condemnable aspect of the action of the APC leaders is the intimidation and harrassment of our IDPs by heavily armed security personnel brought by the party to provide security for party faithful.
“Some of the IDPs who spoke with me (Shior) accused some party thugs of manhandling them when they spoke glowingly about the Benue State Government with regard to their upkeep in the camp upon interrogation.
“Checks revealed that a woman, who had a fracture in the course of the manhandling, is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed location.”
He pointed out that it was in view of this that “Benue State Emergency Management Agency has banned all forms of political gatherings in IDP camps across the state.
“The ban has become necessary in order to avoid further public embarrassment on our respected IDPs and to stop disgruntled politicians from using the misfortunes of our people for cheap political capital.
“It is exactly one week ago, when leaders of the APC from Benue state, stormed Daudu to formally receive a former Speaker of the State Assembly, Dr. Steven Tsav from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) into its fold.
“Although the event has come and gone, it has left many issues that deserve very strong caution and portray some of our leaders in very bad light.
“Let it be noted that cross carpeting in the Nigerian context of politicking can be done at any time by anybody, but the manner the Daudu event was done leaves much to be desired for those cross carpeting and the ones receiving them.
“The choice of the venue is unacceptable and should be condemned in totality by all well-meaning Benue people and indeed Nigerians.”
According to him, “The choice of Daudu for the decamping ceremony was obviously intended to portray to the general public that the defection ceremony of the former Speaker into the APC was well attended, that was one of the reasons why top echelon of the party chose a vulnerable place; home for the IDPs.
“There is no doubt that the IDPs are readily available to listen to anybody that visits them and are always eager to hear the good news that they will soon return to their homes where they have been forced to stay away for close to a year now.
“A quick visit to the camp will leave no one in doubt that within a minute, all the IDPs are gathered in their numbers to listen to their guest(s), which is one of the reasons that informed the choice of the venue.”
The SEMA boss therefore warned that “This (campaign) should be the last of its kind by not only the APC but any other political party that may be willing to use any of the IDPs camps for campaigns or decamping ceremonies.”

Delta APC Crisis: Oshiomole, INEC Chairman  Risk Jail Term

ABUJA – The political feud rocking the Delta state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has assumed another dimension following the filing of a contempt charge against the National Chairman of the APC, Adams Oshiomole and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.
The contempt proceeding filed by aggrieved chieftains of APC at the Federal High Court Abuja was sequel to the alleged disobedience of a court order by the APC and INEC.
Oshiomhole and Yakubu were alleged to have disobeyed the order of court in the  suit marked FHC/ASB/CS/76/2018, filed by the Chief Cyril Ogodo led exco of the APC in Delta state.
In the said court order in reference dated October 17, 2018 and signed by the Registrar of the court, Ejike Onwukobu, Justice T. B. Adegoke, sitting in Asaba division of the Court had while  adjourning the case ordered parties to maintain status quo by not taking any further steps that could destroy the res in the case.
In spite of the above order of court, the National Chairman of the APC, Oshiomole still went ahead to submit names of purported National Assembly candidates from Delta APC to INEC and the Commission  also went ahead to receive and publish such names.
The Ogodo  faction instituted the suit against  the APC, Oshiomhole, INEC and Prophet  Erue  over the issue of the authentic list of  candidates that emerged from the parallel primaries conducted in the state by the two contending state executives of the party in Delta State.
The primary conducted by the Ogodo led exco produced Prof Pat Utomi and Olorogun O’tega Emerhor as Governorship and Senatorial candidates respectively while that of Prophet Jones Erue produced Chief Great Ogboru and Senator Ovie Omo-Agege as Governorship and Senatorial candidates respectively.
Meanwhile, a notice of consequence of disobedience to a valid  court order contained in Form 48 has been issued  on Oshiomhole and Yakubu.
Other defendants in the contempt proceedings are the All Progressives Congress; members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party and Prophet Jones Erue, factional Chairman of the Delta state chapter of APC.
While Oshiomole is cited for contempt for submitting list of National Assembly candidates for Delta state to INEC against a subsisting order of court, Prof. Yakubu ‎is alleged to be in contempt for accepting and publishing such names.
In a statement on Sunday, counsel to the plaintiffs, Chief Mike Ozekhome, (SAN) said his clients have commenced contempt proceedings against the defendants by filling before the court, Form 48 which is  ‘Notice of Consequence of disobedience to order of Court.’
The said Form 48 dated November 1, 2018 simply reads: “Take notice that unless you obey the direction contained in this order, you will be guilty of contempt of court and you will be liable to be committed to prison”.
The statement  called on the ruling APC “to deviate from the bad precedence, already set for so far, by the government which is notorious for disobeying court orders, at least, to regain the battered and shattered confidence of Nigerians.
It equally called on the judiciary to rise up in defence of its jurisdiction and the rule of law, “as it can no longer hold itself out as a toothless bulldog that can only bark but cannot bite.”

Rooney to make England farewell against USA

(FILES) This file photo taken on June 27, 2016 shows England's forward Wayne Rooney celebrates the team's first goal during Euro 2016 round of 16 football match between England and Iceland at the Allianz Riviera stadium in Nice on June 27, 2016.England's record goalscorer Wayne Rooney announced on August 23, 2017 he is retiring from international football with immediate effect, despite England manager Gareth Southgate telling him he had earned a recall. / AFP PHOTO / TOBIAS SCHWARZ

Wayne Rooney is to come out of England retirement for a final one-off appearance against the United States in an international friendly at Wembley this month, the Football Association announced Sunday.

Rooney, a record goalscorer for both Manchester United and England, has not played international football for nearly two years.

But the 33-year-old, now based in the United States where he plays for Major League Soccer side DC United in Washington, will wear the Three Lions shirt one last time for the Wembley fixture on November 15.

The match will be called The Wayne Rooney Foundation International in support of the striker’s charity aiding disadvantaged children, with England manager Gareth Southgate naming the 33-year-old in his squad.

“I am truly humbled and hugely excited to play for England at Wembley again,” said Rooney in a statement issued by the FA that billed the game as his “final England appearance”.

“I would like to thank Gareth Southgate and The FA for inviting me back and helping to support my Foundation in the process.”

The FA added the match would give the Wembley crowd the “chance to show their appreciation of one of England’s greats as the curtain comes down on a glittering Three Lions career that spanned three FIFA World Cups and three UEFA European Championships”.

Former Everton and United forward Rooney scored 53 goals in 119 England appearances — the most by any outfield player — prior to announcing his retirement from international football in August 2017.

He has scored 12 times for DC United since he joined them after the end of the last English season, following a second spell at boyhood club Everton, and helped them climb from the bottom of the league ladder to the play-offs.
