The first review of Chigozie Obioma's An Orchestra of Minorities is here!

The first review of Chigozie Obioma's An Orchestra of Minorities

After his hooking debut, The Fishermen, Chigozie Obioma is back with his sophomore novel which already has people talking.

It's all praises from the Publishers Weekly in the first review for Chigozie Obioma's second novel.

Chigozie Obioma is the author of The Fishermen, the intriguing coming-of-age tale of four brothers in 1990s Akure. The novel introduced the world to Obioma's ability to tell ordinary stories in an epic way — stories that leave his readers mulling over for days.

Earlier this year, he announced the coming of his second novel, An Orchestra of Minorities, published by Little, Brown. Described by its publishers as “an epic of Igbo civilisation, the novel is narrated by the protagonist’s chi, his guardian spirit/god in Igbo cosmology.

This delicious synopsis was delivered in January to the ears of excited fans, who have been eager to read another of Obioma's intricately-spun tales. Now, the first review of the novel has been released on Publishers weekly, and it gives a bit of a glimpse into what to expect:

"Set in Umuahia, Nigeria, Man Booker finalist Obioma’s unforgettable second novel (after The Fishermen) follows the saga of Chinonso, a young and doomed poultry farmer. The story is narrated by Chinonso’s chi, the guardian spirit that bridges humans and the divine in Igbo cosmology; this narrator functions as both advocate and Greek chorus in the tragedy that unfolds.

Orphaned and broken by his father’s death, Chinonso spends his life in isolation caring for his beloved chickens, until he sees a woman preparing to jump to her death off a bridge. She turns out to be Ndali, the daughter of a prominent local family. Suicidal in the wake of a broken engagement, Ndali is drawn to Chinonso’s fierce protectiveness of his flock, seeing in him a steadiness and resoluteness of character, but she’s blind to the anger and sorrow at his core. The two quickly fall in love, despite her family’s mounting objections. In a bid to win their approval, Chinonso takes up an old acquaintance on the offer of university education in Cyprus, selling his family’s property and possessions to pay for it. The con is painful and clear as day; Chinonso is robbed blind and left stranded in an alien land. After he meets a sympathetic nurse, a moment of violence lands Chinonso in jail, where he must bide his time—still burning with a violent determination to reclaim the life he lost and punish those responsible.

Obioma’s novel is electrifying, a meticulously crafted character drama told with emotional intensity. His invention, combining Igbo folklore and Greek tragedy in the context of modern Nigeria, makes for a rich, enchanting experience. (Jan.)"

The debut that hooked the world

Set in the 1990s, The Fishermen is a coming of age debut that follows the lives of four brothers in Akure, Nigeria. The novel received accolades and praise from The Guardian and the New York Times, as well as numerous highly-acclaimed awards.

Since its initial publication 2015 by Pushkin Press, Chigozie Obioma’s The Fishermen has been translated into over 25 national languages. It has became one of Africa’s most awarded debuts. It won the 2015 FT/Oppenheimer Emerging Voices Award for Fiction, the 2016 Los Angeles Times Book Prize’s Art Seidenbaum Award for First Fiction, and the 2016 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work (Debut Author).

In addition to all the awards, it was shortlisted for the 2015 Man Booker Prize, the 2015 Guardian First Book Award, and the 2015 Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, as well as the longlists for the 2015 Etisalat Prize for Literature and the 2016 International Dylan Thomas Prize.

The Fishermen has also, very recently, been adapted into a stage play.

Helicopter tragedy will haunt me forever, Leicester's Schmeichel says

This handout photo taken and released by King Power on November 4, 2018 shows Leicester City's manager Claude Puel (L) and goal keeper Kasper Schmeichel (R) attend the funeral ceremony for Leicester City's Thai owner and duty-free mogul, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha at Wat Thepsirin Buddhist temple in Bangkok. – Players and staff from Leicester City arrive in Bangkok on November 4 to attend a mourning rite for the club's chairman, whose death last week in a helicopter crash stunned the Premier League club. Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel says the helicopter crash that killed the club’s revered Thai owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha will haunt him forever after he witnessed the tragedy.

The 32-year-old Danish international — speaking after Leicester had beaten Cardiff on Saturday in their first match since the crash, which also killed four others — waved the helicopter off following the 1-1 draw with West Ham on October 27.

Moments later it came down, with Schmeichel reported having been stopped by police as he ran towards the burning wreckage.

“I was on the pitch and I waved him off,” said Schmeichel, before he flew with teammates and coaching staff to Bangkok to attend Vichai’s funeral.

“I saw it all happen. It is something that will stay with me, unfortunately. It’s not a nice memory but I’ve had all the support that I need.

“The club has been great and everybody has received the support that they needed.”

Schmeichel joined Leicester in 2011, a year after Vichai bought the club, and was a pivotal figure in their fairytale Premier League title win in 2016.

He admitted to shaking as he warmed up in Cardiff before the game on Saturday.

The goalkeeper, who had the Thai national flag on his gloves, then joined his teammates and backroom staff around the centre circle to pay tribute to Vichai and the other victims.

“It was tough,” said Schmeichel, who had grief counselling during the week. “But we wanted to do it for the chairman and his family.

“We wanted to be together about this, because we’ve all lost what feels like a family member.

“Wes (Morgan the captain) said a bit, I said a bit. People had a lot to say because he meant so much to so many people. Everyone wanted to chip in.

“He brought everybody here and none of this — the memories, this family he’s built, the culture he’s instilled — would be here without him.”

Schmeichel, who faces another emotion-packed game this Saturday when Leicester play their first home match since the tragedy against Burnley, said Vichai transcended the traditional image of a Premier League club owner.

“When he took over this club it was in a pretty precarious situation, and to build what he has is quite amazing,” he said.

“It’s one thing building a team and a club that can perform on the pitch but we’re more proud of the family that he’s created and the feeling he’s instilled in everybody being welcome.

“It doesn’t matter who you are or what kind of position you have at the club. Whether it be player, staff, stadium staff, security — whatever it may be — everyone is equal and part of the family.”

BREAKING: 78 School Children, Principal Abducted In Bamenda

More than 80 people, mostly students, were kidnapped from a school in the city of Bamenda in western Cameroon by gunmen on Sunday, government and military sources said.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the abduction in the English-speaking region where separatists are fighting to form a breakaway state.

The separatists have imposed curfews and closed down schools as part of their protest against President Paul Biya’s French-speaking government.

“In total 81 people were kidnapped including the school principal. They were taken to the bush, a military source said.

A report claimed 78 students, a driver and another teacher were among those kidnapped.

A government spokesman said it was keeping track of an event but that it could not comment further.

According to Journalducameroon.com, the gunmen stormed the Presbyterian Secondary School Nkwen before rounding off the students to an unknown destination.

The Principal of the school, a driver and another teacher were also kidnapped, local sources confirmed.

Though figures are still not exact for the moment, a source at the North West Governor’s office said they remain cautious for the moment to give out figures not to create panic in some schools.

Most of the students kidnapped, were students of Form Five preparing for the GCE O’ Level and have appeared in a video posted online by pro separatist activists.

Authorities of the North West region say security forces have launched an operation to rescue the children and called on the local community to remain calm.

The separatist movement gathered pace in 2017 after a government crackdown on peaceful demonstrations.

Many people have fled Bamenda and other centres to seek refuge in more peaceful Francophone regions..

Project Safe Access helps children regain their childhood by encouraging them to speak out, and by putting a stop to child sexual abuse.

In Nigeria, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 10 boys will experience sexual violence before they turn 18. While intervention can have lasting positive outcomes for children’s well-being, access to intervention usually requires disclosure. The Cece Yara Foundation established the first toll-free Child Helpline and Child Advocacy Centre in Nigeria to encourage reporting and disclosures. They aim to connect victims to professional services by creating a robust interactive platform that provides access to support and information via the web, SMS and Mobile Applications.

They also intend to establish more Child Advocacy Centres and Community Mini Child Centres to reach children in communities without access to phones and the web.

Here is how alcohol affects your sexual performance

Here is how alcohol affects your sexual performance

Studies have shown that alcohol affects your sexual life negatively by causing premature ejaculation and erectile dysfunction.

It is a popular belief that alcohol is an aphrodisiac, that enough of it can make you last longer in bed and ensure you have a spectacular performance also.

This belief, however, is not backed up by science. While alcohol does help to overcome sexual anxieties, excessive alcohol has a negative physiological effect on the penis.

Adebayo Williams (not real name) tells Pulse he noticed a decline in his sexual drive during the period he was drinking a lot of alcohol.

“I noticed when having sex with my partner, I find it hard to last long and it keeps affecting my sex life. But as soon as I stopped for a while, I saw changes and I was able to perform better.

Another alcohol consumer, Udeme Udo (not real name) believes that taking excessive alcohol can make anyone useless and hinder your sexual performance but in small quantity can help get rid of your inhibitions.

“If you take excessive alcohol, you will be useless and won’t be able to perform at all. But if you take little quantity for liquid courage, you can still get into action.

Speaking to Pulse about the negative effect of alcohol, Dr Joshua Abayomi of Hopewell Clinic says that alcohol reduces the brain’s capacity to sense sensual stimulation.

“Extreme intake of alcohol is a constant cause of erectile dysfunction and as the volume of alcohol in the blood rises, the alcohol reduces the brain’s capacity to sense sensual stimulation.

"Also as a depressant, alcohol instantly affects the penis by conflicting with parts of the nervous system that are necessary for sexual arousal and orgasm, including respiration, circulation, and sensitivity of nerve endings."

Alcohol makes the blood vessels to expand, which changes the way the blood progresses in and out of the penis. However, a good bloodstream controls the relaxation and shortening of the penis, so it can get and maintain an erection.

According to a 2009 study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, the study found less volume of liquid in the body in conjunction with a depressed nervous system, led to a struggle with sexual performance.

This is because alcohol can dehydrate the body, decreasing blood volume while increasing the hormone associated with erectile dysfunction angiotensin.

Alcohol abuse also affects hormone levels. It lowers testosterone levels, which diminishes sexual drive and function.

For women, dehydration caused by alcohol consumption can result in vaginal dryness and for men, it has also been linked to premature ejaculation.

In 2007,  Indian Journal of Psychiatry published a study that linked premature ejaculation to a high consumption of alcohol.

According to the study "Seventy-two percent had one or more sexual dysfunction, the most common being premature ejaculation, low sexual desire, and erectile dysfunction. The amount of alcohol consumed appeared to be the most significant predictor of developing sexual dysfunction."

Speaking to Pulse, Ayodele Noah (not real name) says alcohol makes men ejaculate faster. “Excessive alcohol may get you really horny, but you ejaculate faster which is the last thing you want. Alcohol gets you really excited and triggers the sex hormones. But you would be done in less than a minute or two. It's a killjoy.

It is not a bad idea to have a glass or two of wine before sex but just like everything else, alcohol shouldn't be consumed in excess. Moderate drinking is advised before lovemaking.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism defines moderate drinking as no more than two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women.

The liver can only process one ounce of liquor (0.0295735296875 litres) or one standard drink in one hour.

Consuming more than this will lead the system to become saturated, where extra alcohol will increase in the blood and body tissues until the liver is ready to metabolize it again.

Until then, high blood alcohol concentration will last for several hours and affect you physiologically.

According to Dr Kunle Adeleke of Hope Center, you should replace alcohol with water instead.

"If you do drink before having sex, you should exchange a second alcoholic drink for a glass of water, in order to fight the effects of dehydration."

The body is able to work at optimal capacity by staying hydrated since major biological activities and functions utilize water molecules.

So guys, if you want to have a good performance in bed, alcohol is not the way to go. You can take a little sip to get rid of the nerves but if you want to keep it up all night, there are better techniques to try.

Here is how alcohol affects your sexual performance
